Looking for good material ideas for a prom dress .Betty’s Sewing Box is a real Alladins cave of beautiful materials for sewing, knitting or crocheting. My 15 year old Granddaughter has just started to do her own clothing designs after her work experience at David Nieper Fashions. She was amazed at not just the materials but the trimmings and patterns even for beginners. The lady there took time to talk to her. It is a great place, can’t wait to go back. The cafe there is lovely and it has its own car park. It has a great workroom at the rear. Fantastic.

I don’t know what to say - I was expecting a friendly welcome yet the lady that greeted us made us feel we were not welcome, my mother may have been older yet she isn’t by any means without faculties , I found the lady to be most condescending to us and so rude at insisting where we sat as other tables were reserved for pre bookings - ( in a couple of hours ) a lot of potential lost business I feel We had baked potatoes - which were very small, unwashed and came with no butter - no salad dressing offered in fact no one came back to ask if there was anything we needed - There could be potential but first impressions is paramount. I wouldn’t want to trouble her again!

This is 3 mins outside the main shopping area in Ashbourne, and a girl I happened to be chatting to mentioned this place" The sewing shop" with a lovely tea room.Being a Tea Shop addict all over Britain,I am always looking for a new place. The shop at the front is wonderful with select Liberty reams of material, and ever aspect of sewing requirements the nimble fingered could wish to find...that was an added bonus to the reason for my visit....the tea shop.It was absolutely charming! the cakes and scones were all home made and they actually supply enough butter! unlike so many places. My sister had " the best poached eggs ever" on homemade bread, and the coffee was hot and served for one in a cafetiere, and delightful china cups and saucers...this was only surpassed by the most delightful lady who was serving us....I think she may have been called Moira??,lots of black curly hair, she was warm,so friendly, and seemed actually pleased we were there! it was absolutely charming....3 ladies were at the end table knitting, and another two seemed deep in conversation,it was wonderful, and I believe that the lady who does all the cooking is the daughter of a well known Bakery owner....she has cerainly picked up her fathers gift....the Lemon cake was divine.....This place is unique, and well worth a visit....Dont change a thing!! its so special the way it is!So very Charming and so English. Waited quite a while to be seated and then only got served after going to a waitress and saying a couple who had come in after us had been looked after and had their order. Ordered snacks from the specials menu only to be told that it shouldn't have been there as it referred to the previous week. Changed order and told they had no bacon. Finally ordered, the waitress was lovely and I felt sorry for her as the previous were not her fault. Disappointing as it could have been a nice outing if things had been right. Obviously very popular as it was full when we left. May be we were just unlucky.

Had a fantastic Coronation Afternoon Tea at Bettys Vintage Tearoom yesterday. Everything was perfect….even taking the trouble to make sure my 82 year old Dad had the comfy chair in the best position! The food, as always, was absolutely delicious. All beautifully homemade and tasting delicious (and lots of it too). Loved the table settings with special Coronation tea mats! Every detail had been carefully thought out and Julie and the team were so helpful. Thank you to you all!!

Went for a birthday celebration. Having booked in advance we were allocated a table. A disabled member of our party went to exchange their chair for one that would be less painful and uncomfortable . A member of staff stopped us and very loudly said that "you must not change the chairs" and when we went to explain why we needed a different chair she insisted that no chairs could be moved. We would have walked out but this would have upset other members of the party and so the disabled lady had to sit uncomfortably for over an hour. This led to additional discomfort and pain for the next 48 hours. This ruined what should otherwise have been a pleasant and happy time. It is a shame that disabled customers are still being discriminated against in this day and age.

I am currently mobility challenged, so I did my research before visiting Betty's Sewing Box. It sells itself short for accessibility. There is parking space on the forecourt and a few tables outside. The access was level so I was able to walk in using my stick. I think it would be possible to get a wheelchair into the vintage tea room, but the shop itself is fairly small, crammed with wonderful things, including remnant packs, I loved the displays using small vintage suitcases, and their Liberty stash was impressive. The workshop space looked very easy to access as well. The vintage tea room is wonderful. There is a clean accessible toilet down a short passageway, which was welcome after a drive to get there. We ordered the Derbyshire oatcakes, which were delicious. The service was excellent: a friendly and very helpful server made us feel very welcome. When I was struggling round the shop on my stick ( as I am still in recovery and rather unsteady) there was a huge box in my way on the floor, A member of staff moved it aside when she saw my predicament. They were good enough to let me leave things at the till, as I do find it hard to carry things atm. On the whole I was very impressed with the shop stock and the lovely light and spacious cafe. Will definitely be returning next time we are in the area.

We stopped here for lunch after a walk in the park opposite and we were really pleased with our choice. Betty's is a quaint tea room which also has a sewing and haberdashery shop within. As we had our dogs with us and it was a warm day, we were pleased to be seated outside. Unfortunately they don't allow dogs inside. I had a delicious egg sandwich and my husband enjoyed the oakcake special. Whilst we didn't have room for desserts, the cakes looked amazing. Service was friendly and quick and the prices were very reasonable. Will definitely stop again next time we are in the area.

I used to come to Betty’s for coffee or lunch whenever I visited the shop - quite regularly. But I hadn’t been for a while and sadly, I don’t expect to return soon after my recent experience. I think Betty’s imagines we’re still at the height of the pandemic. For instance, despite the cafe being empty, we were corralled behind a board telling us to wait - for some time. One of our group couldn’t stand any longer and sat at the nearest table, only to be told off when the waitress finally appeared. She then insisted she had to have all of our names & telephone numbers before we could be admitted. This had not been a Covid requirement for some time but it is at Betty’s. The shop is happy to run lengthy craft sessions in the shop, and I would have thought a few customers drinking coffee in a spacious cafe for was less ‘risky’. Anyway, by this time, we’d inspected the rather tired looking cakes (it was quite early so I think they’d been cut a while ago). We decided between the food offering and the staff attitude, it wouldn’t be a relaxing break so we left without sampling the food or drink.

Ashbourne is so lucky to have this family run tearoom keeping up good service with traditional food. We had a ‘Winter Warmer’ which is homemade soup with sandwiches & side salad. Excellent and very good value. All freshly prepared. Pots of tea and filter coffee. All served by delightful friendly staff on vintage china with proper tea pots too. Then we had cake! Wow!! Again all home made - and you can tell. No processed rubbish. There was fresh gluten free cake too. Homemade biscuits, jams and chutneys were on sale at very reasonable prices and all looked lovely. They no longer allow dogs due to a staff allergy but in the summer there is limited outdoor seating though. Also, my friend had visited a couple of years before and thought how much nicer everything looked now. Not as cluttered or twee!! Can’t recommend highly enough. Also in the same building is the ‘Sewing Box’ with knowledgeable staff selling all items for sewing and knitting, even gorgeous Liberty fabric. Also do sewing repairs and alterations. We are returning very soon to have Afternoon Teas!!!

I went with a WI group for what I thought would be a sewing "workshop". Instead, we were sat round a table, given some bits and pieces and told to get on with it. I spent most of my time helping other ladies who didnt know what to do. Our refreshments were a mug of tea and one piece of cake, sat round the same worktable. I would have preferred to go into the cafe for tea and cake. I was disappointed and thought it was not value for money.

A friend and I visited for lunch and cake, having found this little place on Trip Advisor. It is a small cafe located alongside a sewing shop located in the Masonic Lodge. It is essentially everything you would expect from an English tea-shop and we loved it. I had quiche, salad and cake and my friend had soup and a sandwich, the food was good and well priced. The added pleasure of this little place is that you can then go shopping in the sewing shop (assuming you like sewing).Overall well worth a visit, its not your run of the mill cafe doing the same as everyone else, its reasonably priced, parking is relatively easy around about (and free) and the sewing shop is also wonderful.

Plenty of selection on the specials board too. We had a range of food, myself going for a tuna toast. The bread was lovely and seemed really fresh. Nice little salad and a few crisps to accompany it too. The cakes looked gorgeous but we didn't have any on this occasion. The coffee was also great, I had the stronger cafetiere and my partner had the medium blend - both were lovely! Also a great little shop next to the cafe which I bought a beautiful cushion from! I went here for afternoon tea in May 2018 with a group of 5 friends as we were staying nearby at Sandybrook Country Park. We walked to Betty's from Sandybrook on the Tissington trail which was a 45 minute mainly flat, off-road walk. When we arrived at Betty's we were hot and hungry and really looking forward to our afternoon tea! The food and service were all great and they were able to cater for special diets such as vegetarian and gluten free. We couldn't believe how much food we got for £10, so it was great that they provided take away boxes for the leftovers. The building itself is really pretty and, even for someone like me who isn't into craft, the concept was really appealing. We will definitely go back if we are ever in the area again!

I visited this place with my cousin when I was up visiting her in nearby Derby. We always like to explore new places and I came across Ashbourne on my searches of the local area. We set off early and headed for Dovedale where we went on a long walk before heading back to Betty's Sewing Box. I had called ahead as it looked like a small place and good job, since I was told they had a hen party in for the afternoon but they could fit us in for afternoon tea at 2.30pm. This worked perfectly for us so we booked up! They were ready for us on arrival (the scrabble board "reserved" sign was a nice touch) and the car parking facilities out front made finding somewhere to leave the car easy as anything. We were offered drinks (a pot of tea and a hot chocolate, both included in the afternoon tea package) and then tea was served. A selection of sandiwiches (I had mentioned that my cousin didn't eat meat so there were plenty of cheese, egg and tuna sandwiches plus some ham for me!). Then there were scones, Victoria sponge, flapjack, lemon drizzle cake and lemon curd and white chocolate berry tarts. It would be appropriate to say there was too much to manage, but manage we did! And it was all delicious. The one tiny thing I would say was that the scones were served with whipped cream rather than clotted cream but this really wasn't a problem, just seemed odd to me. Such a quaint little place with knick knacks everywhere, bags of sewing encouraging visitors to add to ongoing projects and possibly the most surreal toilet I've ever experienced (my description won't do it justice - go see for yourselves). And at £20 for the two of us it was a complete bargain! Will definitely return if I'm ever in the area again and certainly looked like a fun place to host a hen party or something similar. The shop was cute too with every you could ever want haberdashery-wise. Overall, a lovely little place!

We visited for lunch, ordering sandwiches and drinks. The service was excellent, and the sandwiches came, freshly made and served with salad and crisps. The rest of the menu, especially the specials board, looked and sounded delicious, so we will return to try more! Highly recommended.

I absolutely adore this cafe/crafts shop! For the past year it has been a complete regular visit for me. At one point (being a 3 minute walk from our sixth form) it was our lunch spot every Thursday! The girls and I would go for cake and tea together, and it was one of my favourite traditions of ours. I will often take other friends there when they visit the town, and I regularly suggest it for special occassions (I went for tea with my mum after my final A Level exam, for breakfast on my last day, and for brunch on my 18th! The owner is a wonderful, inspiring woman, and all of the staff are perfectly friendly. Plus the cake is AMAZING!I haven't made much use of the sewing workshops as it is not an interest of mine, but I have heard great reviews from friends who have done. Overall, it is a little haven for me in the town, and I would recommend a visit to anyone looking for a quiet, quirky spot to sit!

Betty's is quirky, old fashioned but don't let that put you off as the staff are very friendly and polite and the cheese on toast with mushrooms is delicious. Well worth a visit if in the area.

Lovely unusual place to eat with all the sewing stuff around. I bought pretty buttons for premature baby knitting. We enjoyed the matching sets of vintage cups, saucers and plates and cloth serviettes some with crocheted edges that looked too good to use. We had egg sandwiches, the egg was freshly made and a ham sandwich which was delicious. The salad was fresh and unusual with added fennel and pea plant and the prices were so reasonable for such a treat.

My friend and I visited on Monday. I had messaged Jackie the owner on Facebook to arrange a sewing session for us both.Jackie replied to my message quickly and we arranged the details. We had a 1:2 tuition session and were taught how to make a simple envelope fold cushion cover. We were asked to chose whichever fabric we liked and given simple easy instructions and Jackie was there to help with every stage. It is a very friendly, welcoming place and it has a lovely calming atmosphere. We finished our cushions and we were very proud of our handy work!We then went into the tea room side and polished off a beautiful afternoon tea, sewing is hungry work you know!!The sandwiches were beautifully fresh and we could taste the quality of the ingredients used. The cakes were beautiful and homemade although we were so full we took them home I would highly recommend Betty's for anyone who is looking for a simple beginner sewing project as the tuition is relaxed, calm and you are looked after so well.Keep up the good work ladies, we will be back!

I booked a table via email and it was replied to very quickly and came across very warm and friendly,I went in earlier to drop some plants and special napkins in and was greeted in a welcome manner and they were very kind to put the extras on our table,We had 5 afternoon teas and they were exquisite! From the sandwiches to the scone to the cakes, we enjoyed them all. The tea was also a good cup as my Grandad can be fussy when it comes to his tea belly :-)We were asked if we'd like more sandwiches and tea to keep us topped up,The ambience is so fitting and quant, the tea is served in authentic attire,We had a walk round and Brough a lovely hand knitted cardigan for my 4 month old daughter,This place is faultless, the staff are friendly and welcoming and couldn't do more for you,We can't wait to come again!!

My mum and I visited during the week to this beautiful tea room. It was our second visit and we will be returning very soon. The afternoon teas are so reasonably priced at £10, and are one of the best in Derbyshire. The sandwiches, scones and cakes are delicious. I had the soup which was also beautiful. I love the atmosphere in this cafe, the staff are also very friendly and helpful. Will be coming back next week for sure.

It's been more than 30 years since I last went round to my late nana's for scones, lemon tarts and good strong tea. This week had been the sort I can only describe as stomach churningly stressful. The sort of week which seems to cause your stomach acid to be on spin cycle and I just need comfort food, nursery stodge and a hug from a nana - any nana. My friend and I both had the same main so I cannot offer extensive comment on the menu but our spinach and ricotta tarts were 'fresh out of the oven' and the accompanyingly salad fresh and interesting. Next time I am going for a giant crumpet with cheese and ham...saw a man having one and thought, mmm, nice idea. I really didn't have the appetite for the homemade scone but shovelled one down just to be sociable and my friend seemed to like her maltesa cake..saw her squirrelling a slice away for later in what my nana used to call her 'Scotties'.Yes, the big old house in which Betty's resides is a bit draughty but - get this - the lady on the 'til said that if we do come again she'll not only teach us how to sew and knit, she'll also lend us hand-knit blankets for our knees. What more could I ask for other than a two week stay?As for the decor, you will find yourself saying 'Nana/gran' used to have one like that. If you used to have a lot of this stuff yourself - tea cosies, floral tea cups and crinoline lady ornaments - your either in your 80s or a 20-something vintage chick with a cute lisp and a name like Daisy. I think I loved it because it was all clearly done with love...not overly styled and 'themed' but cute as a wooden toggle on your duffel coat none-the-less.

Lovely building, vintage style and lovely little shop attached with a workshop out the back. Booked a table for 6 and they put us 6 scones by because we were due in at the end of a Saturday. Nice thought to do that. The host (I think the owner) was so accommodating and helpful. The afternoon tea at £10pp is fab value with plenty of choice- freshly made with home made cakes and beautiful scones. The little touches and great hospitality make this a little gem. Worth a visit whenever you're in Ashbourne, can't recommend it enough.

This place is a must if you are ever in the area. My sister and I had afternoon tea at Betty's Sewing Box in Ashbourne when we visited Derby and the Peak District. We have had afternoon tea at many places including the Ritz in London and I can honestly say this is the best one we have ever had. The sandwhiches were so delicious! Full to the brim and on the freshest bread I have ever had.The choice was amazing too! All the cakes were home made and there was a great selection. The one thing my sister and I liked was that it was plentiful especially as after our non-stop journey from Guildford we were starving. The lovely lady who served us the tea kept offering us more of everything and plenty of tea in lovely teapots and china cups and saucers. The tearoom itself was full of hand made articles and there were projects around the room that you could have a go at. The staff were very friendly and the whole experience was one that my sister and I will definately be repeating when we next visit the area. Well done to everyone at Betty's sewing box. Keep up the good work!

We stumbled on this café by accident due to where we had parked and were delighted with our find.It is really well thought out, with a good menu including some gluten free items and beautifully presented. As people in to crafts and sewing we loved that elements of the adjoining shop were brought into the café and that the menu covers were knitting patterns. The staff were really friendly and helped us to work out what we needed for a sewing project while we waiting for our food to be prepared. I will definitely go back.

Found this café when looking for somewhere to take a group of retired workmates after a walking tour of Ashbourne. Located out of the centre (follow the southbound traffic along St John St and then carry on where it all turns right) we found it by accident when looking for the site of the original Ashbourne Hall.Immediately loved it: entering through the shop the café with its table cloths, china crockery and stands of cakes then one would not be surprised to see Miss Marple sitting in a corner. Small touches like the applique sign for the toilet add to its character.Altogether quite delightful with lovely homemade cakes and snacks - without hesitation we will be taking our party there. They really need an A-board or similar to draw you along from the main road as it is not visible until you approach it.. We will take our visitors there in future for the experience.

Had an absolutely lovely stop for tea and cake here... only in Ashbourne for the antiques centre but ended up not going once we stumbled across this! For less than a tenner, my husband and I sat in the lovely, quiet tearoom and had a pot of tea for two (very generous teapot!) and a slice of cake each. Last time we had a slice of cake and a pot of tea somewhere, it was a tiny pot and a tiny slice- this was the exact opposite! I had a huge slab of white chocolate and raspberry cake which was amazingly moist and sweet and hubby had the coffee and walnut cake which, despite not liking walnuts, I was stealing bites of! The mismatched cups and saucers were lovely, everything is mish-mash but it's all vintage and just seems to all work so well together. Little nik-naks hung here there and everywhere and crafting magazines to read at your leisure! It was lovely! All of the staff were lovely too and I can't wait to get booked onto one of the workshops...! (If only to try the cakes again...!)Very impressed, will be back :)

Loved my tea and cake here with my daughter and grandson. It was a lovely peaceful experience. As the coffee shop stands back from the main road there is an air of serenity about the place. We loved the vintage teacups and plates and all of the quirky crafts for sale. Good prices too cheaper than the town centre we felt.

This is a vintage tea room with great charm. Beautiful vintage china with lovely food to go with it. On first glance the menu seemed slightly pricey but the food was certainly worth it, served by lovely staff who very welcoming of our two lively grandchildren. They made useful suggestions to our choices even advising only one portion between the two children as portion sizes were quite generous, thus saving us money. this place is off the beaten track but well worth a visit just slightly away from the busy centre of town but opposite the park (which is worth a visit if you have children). We couldn't find a seat in a cafe anywhere in the town centre but a 2 minute walk found this gem. There is a sewing workshop attached, hence the name with good sewing and craft bargains to be found. There is a play corner for children with toys, colouring materials and a blackboard. the children loved it and we all enjoyed our lunch.

Whilst I cannot fault the quality of the food, the lack of toilet facilities causes me a major problem. Previously when we have visited here we were able to use the toilets belonging to the pub next door. Having mobility problems and on medication , I politely asked if it would be possible to use the staff WC. This was refused and I was told to use the public toilets which were a considerable distance away. It took me a very painful 25 minute walk to go there and back.I am 85 years old, leaning heavily on a walking stick . I feel very disappointed as i have visited this fish shop many times in the past.

Really lovely food, you wouldn't know it from the outside/inside - it's like any other pub but the food was really good. Had the best dessert - rice pudding with apple and nuts - to die for.

Arrived around 10:45 am on 10/11/24 only to be informed that there was no hot food being served until 11:15 due to a take away order. Others in front of us left and we reluctantly ordered two coffees, a flapjack and a Pork Pie instead of the full cooked breakfasts we’d hoped for. We were charged twice for the Pork Pie, which we pointed out and were subsequently refunded for. We sat at a table that had the previous occupants breakfast plate on it (which was never cleared, considering the waiting on staff weren’t serving any food at the time) and waited for our coffee which did not arrive. We fetched it ourselves from the counter, at which point around 11:05, they started taking breakfast orders again. The place seemed poorly managed and why you’d turn away valued customers for a take away order is beyond me.
