We have been eating at bettys for over 30 years on the last few occasions we’ve been disappointed again today average very overpriced food how can a bottle of still water be £7.25 ????? We’re moving on to paradise restaurant far superior food at similar prices bettys will continue to prosper based upon visitors bucket lists

I had heard for years about the famous Bettys in Harrogate, and being in the area took my wife for afternoon tea. As we had booked we ate in the Imperial room, which was quite pleasant but not as grand as I’d envisaged. Tea was excellent as expected and the food quite good. I do feel however that it’s overpriced. Staff did ask if we wanted more sandwiches or tea, but at the price they charge not unexpected. Best part of the experience was the staff, they really can’t do enough to help and are warm and welcoming.

What a lovely lovely afternoon tea. We came to Betty’s for a big birthday celebration on 3rd November. One of our party is 60 in a couple of weeks, one 70 in a month and the other two somewhere in the middle 😀. We had pre booked afternoon tea so came straight upstairs. What can I say, from the moment we arrived the service was exemplary. The staff are amazing. So lovely and attentive. We had various intolerances within our group and they were all catered for. The savouries, sandwiches, scones and cakes were amazing. We actually had another serving of the ham and cheese sandwiches as they were our favourites. The scones were so light and the cakes so delicious. Having been to the Ritz, F&M and Chatsworth, I can definitely say this was so superior. A special thanks to our waiter James who was lovely. Would definitely recommend.

We went here for tea and cake and we weren’t disappointed. 5 star service, delicious cake and the friendliest staff. I’m gluten free and had a few cakes I could chose from and I chose raspberry macaroon with fresh raspberries it was the best cake I’ve ever tasted. My partner had a strawberry cake thing and he said it was delicious. We had to queue for a little while but so glad we did. Beautiful tea room, 5 star customer service and amazing cakes and the food looked amazing too.

We were looking forward to going to Betty’s tea room. Waited in the queue for 20 min and it all looked great. The lady who served us was lovely, great character and what a giggle! However the scones were cold, hard and dry, nothing like we were expecting. Tea was great but not good enough to go back!

Had a lovely yorkshire cream tea at Bettys , we didn't have to que to long to get a table (there is always a que) we had 2 scones with cream and jam and a pot of tea each £27 which i thought was really good . I would of give it 5/5 but i wanted to say in case anyone from Bettys reads this is that you maybe would consider putting window coverings of some sort as its like sitting and eating in a goldfish bowl when by the windows as everyone queing outside just stare in. My husband and I found this Slightly uncomfortable and off putting.

Had previously read mixed reviews of Betty’s Harrogate but so pleased we made the decision to visit. There was a queue upon arrival (to be expected) but we only had to wait 10 minutes before we were shown down to The Spindler Room, a beautiful room of wooden pictures/features…away from the prying eyes who can see you through the windows if you have a table on the first floor at the front of the tearoom! We chose lunch rather than afternoon tea. Staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive. Yes, it’s fairly expensive however the food is gorgeous and a visit not to miss.

What a waste of money. Very, very disappointing. There was not enough jam and cream to cover both of our scones and nowhere near enough sandwiches. (four small triangles each) It cost a couple of pennies less than £60 for their afternoon tea for two. It consisted of one stand and two pots of tea. Please see my photo. If it had been £30 for the two of us, I would still feel cheated and that's my reflection, nearly a week after the experience! Don't bother.

Bought a takeaway vanilla slice from Betty's and my god was it SMALL. For £3.50 for a terribly small item, you can get the same sized slice from Greggs for a third of the price. And whilst it was nice, it wasn't stand out or remarkable. Felt like a rip off, though the counter staff were friendly and nice.

Well aware of the hype surrounding Bettys it was the thing to do when visiting Harrogate after so many years! Very underwhelmed the scones were very small and doughy hardly enough cream and jam to cover a scone! The ‘dirty rascal’ whatever category of cake it comes under just crumbled when trying to butter very average and dry. The tea ‘green’ was very pleasant. For the money try the Ivy next door.

The overall value and quality was appalling. Beyond appalling. You might call it a joke, but I certainly wasn't laughing Ordered both the vegetarian and vegan afternoon teas. The sandwiches were tiny (the Borrowers would have complained) and there were far too few of them. We were not informed that additional sandwiches could be asked for. In addition, these almost-sandwiches-but-not-quite-big-enough-for-a-doll's-tea-party were tasteless, bland and badly made, with a couple of them literally falling apart. No thought or imagination seemed to have gone into the fillings, with the most basic, stereotypical vegetarian options offered. The vegan offerings seemed to consist of lettuce, cucumber and something that resembled what I can only describe as a thin, tasteless yoghurt, with about as much culinary appeal as a twenty year old piece of paper. Utterly appalling. The scones were palatable, but definitely nothing special and a quick trip to Greggs would have netted a pack of scones that would easily have been the match of those offered, at a fraction of the price. More jam and cream would have been nice. Perhaps we could have requested more. If we could have, we certainly weren't told that. The jam quality was around the same quality as a 'saver' jar from a budget supermarket, but with less consistency and taste. Or fruit. The cakes, again, were small to the point of absurdity. I'd like to say that these were the best part. I'd like to say that, but I really can't. At least they matched the standard of the rest of this 'Afternoon Tea'. They were either cloyingly sweet, had a bad taste, or weren't 'cakes' at all. (A small glass full of the above mentioned thin, tasteless 'yoghurt', with some fruit one top, really doesn't constitute a cake.) There was one good thing. We ordered a 'Fat Rascal', because, we were disappointed to learn, these didn't come as standard with the Afternoon Tea. This was good quality and tasted nice. But... It was extremely expensive. Almost £7, although it was, admittedly, a decent size. It's hard to understand, however, why it was considerably more than twice the price of the same item in the Betty's shop, just a few yards away. (Transport costs have increased a lot since Brexit, haven't they!) What's worse is that it did not come with cream and jam. There was butter, to be fair, but at the ultra-premium price that we paid, a little bit of the third-rate cream and sub-par supermarket, saver jam we'd got with our 'Afternoon Tea' scones wouldn't have gone amiss. The staff were pleasant and helpful, but no different to any ordinary café staff. Try sending someone for Afternoon Tea at The Ritz, Bettys (It's in London), for ideas and tips on how to do premium service All in all, truly appalling and abysmal. I will be in the vicinity next week and was planning on visiting for breakfast. Forget. That.

Salmon one was nice. 3 different sandwiches all of which are tiny. You could have an unlimited amount but as choice was poor you ended up eating the same - 1 of which was very disappointing. Cakes sickly sweet to the point of almost being inedible. The price is exorbitant for what you get and mark up will be massive. Don’t believe the hype. I won’t be returning.

Take Jess, for example. Rarely will you meet someone as kind and courteous. I had a problem with a faulty cafetière but this was a momentary blip in another faultless service. You can't go to Harrogate (or York) without calling at Betty's shop to load up with of some of the delicious cakes and pastries they make. The thought of forgoing the unbelievable vanilla slice in particular sends me cold. However my experience yesterday sours it all for me. There is always a queue - even a queue to get in the shop at busy times - it's that popular. But yesterday I was completing my purchases having spent about £50 on cakes when an elderly lady tried to pay for a £6 box of shortbread and was told firmly she had to go to the back of the queue. *Even though* she explained she'd *already* queued to get in. Instead of going straight to the counter she'd been browsing the shop and when she went to pay - in all good faith thinking she'd queued to get in and was a respected customer entitled to pay for her item - she was sent to the back of the queue, which by this time had built up behind us and was certainly at the door if not actally stretching out the door. I was shocked and livid so paid for her shortbread so she wouldn't have to queue *again* but the rigid callous arrogant attitude towards this lady horrified me! If Betty's can't handle its own popularity - and its queue - and if they can't respect customers who've already queued to get in to spend their money in the shop, then they have failed abysmally in their customer service. Worse though, if they are comfortable treating older and less mobile customers in such a cruel, inflexible and humiliating manner then theirs is a shop I would prefer to stay away from no matter how painful it will be to forego the vanilla slices. Shame on you Betty's.

This was booked as part of our relaxing long weekend. The decor was lovely - if you have booked your afternoon tea in the imperial room, you do NOT need to queue up. You just go straight up the stairs and wait to be seated. The staff was extremely attentive, but to be honest I don’t really like all of the creams that was part of the sandwich’s so when I ordered my second lot of sandwiches I asked for them to come out without the cream on it. Ann was very knowledgeable and took time to talk to my husband and I towards the end of our time here. There is a lovely relaxing atmosphere and the piano playing in the background was a lovely touch. We returned here on the way home to purchase some cakes and the staff in the shop were so kind and wished us a safe journey home. What a lovely experience, I just wish we lived closer as we definitely would be regular visitors.

I recently visited Harrogate and had the pleasure of experiencing Betty's for the first time. I must say that I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of their Afternoon Tea. The sandwiches were fresh, and we were free to ask for more tea and sandwiches as much as we wanted. I was particularly fond of their Cylon tea, which was a great hit with me. As I do not consume uncooked alcohol, I informed the staff, and they were kind enough to replace the sandwiches and cake with suitable alternatives. High prices so expectations are also high. The cafetiere coffee was a weak coffee. At least the cream is frothy. The kedgeree was okay, cooked nicely, but I couldn't really taste the smoked haddock. Pleasant enough though. Would have been a four star review if this was another café charging a few pounds over your average tearooms, but this is double the price of many, and scrimping of ground coffee shouldn't really happen in such an establishment.

We’ve visited Betty’s before and enjoyed it, but we haven’t been since I have been dairy free due to my son’s CMPA. I was excited to visit as they offer a vegan afternoon tea and I had high expectations of what they could deliver but I was left very disappointed. I was surprised they weren’t able to offer any sort of allergy menu as this is so common now and this information is required to be available to customers by law. Instead, I was told to ask them if what I wanted contained dairy item by item or just order something vegan. This didn’t make me feel particularly welcome or comfortable. I decided to order the vegan cream tea - essentially two scones, cream, jam and a cup of tea. When the bill came later, I discovered the vegan cream tea was charged at £1.25 extra, about 10% more than the regular cream tea, though the price difference wasn’t marked on the menu or communicated to me until I got the bill. The cream tea itself was really disappointing when it arrived. The vegan scones were small, flat and looked slightly over cooked/too dark. The texture was very gritty/granulated, liked the sugar hadn’t been creamed well with the rest of the ingredients to make the scones. I’ve had better vegan scones elsewhere so don’t understand why these were so poor, and I expected them to be the best vegan scones coming from Betty’s. Overall, they tasted too sweet. It didn’t feel like any effort had been made to develop a decent vegan scone here. The disappointed continued with the cream as they served the vegan scone with oat creme fraiche. I don’t know anyone who would serve a regular scone with creme fraiche, so don’t know why they do with a vegan one. They serve the oat creme fraiche in a sandwich so I’m guessing they just double up and use it for both, but the taste and texture was all wrong for a cream tea. I don’t understand why they are serving oat crème fraiche for scones when there are very good plant creams available. The crème fraiche was inedible on the scones for me, and I ended up scraping it off and asking for some margarine instead. They did bring some but it was pretty tasteless. Again, there are cheap and tasty plant spreads out there, so it just seemed lazy and unthinking to offer such poor vegan products. Finally, the tea. I had hoped Betty’s might have a specific tea blend developed to be drunk with plant milks but they just served their standard tea room blend. This was fine, but if I wanted to offer a premium vegan afternoon tea, this is the sort of thing that would elevate it from a sub standard vegan offering bunged together to something that was worthy of the Betty’s brand and inflated price. Overall, I felt very let down by Betty’s. Many of these issues could be fixed by using better vegan ingredients. Even Starbucks offers a whipped vegan cream for example, that would work better on a scone. I actually found the scone really unpleasant to eat, particularly with the oat creme fraiche, and it’s definitely put me off returning in the future when I will be eating dairy again.

What on earth has happened to Betty’s! It was always a treat to go to the tea rooms when visiting Harrogate, but oh dear, it’s not what it used to be. It seems it’s now obligatory to wait outside in the cold even if tables are available. The bottom floor was closed off completely, which didn’t help with queuing, although access to the “Ladies” was available. The macaroons we ordered had a layer of toffee in the middle which I don’t think should be there, and the restaurant smelt strongly of fish. Rather over priced too for what you get. I’m sad to say we won’t be returning.

Stumbled on this little eatery while visiting Knaresborough on a Sunday lunch time. We went in to get maybe a sandwich and thought it wasn’t going to be great to be honest but ended up having a cooked lunch and it was so good! The place was busy and you could tell they were locals as they were chatting across to each other. We looked at the menu and decided to have have a cooked meal. I ordered pie chips and peas and my husband a burger with chips salad and coleslaw and a pot of tea. You could actually get a 3 course Sunday lunch for £14.50! When mine came there were no peas but another bowl soon arrived full of fresh vegetables and a big jug of gravy. Food was really good the staff were lovely. The lady said that as she had been cooking Sunday lunches she gave me some of the veg. We were thoroughly impressed and wouldn’t hesitate to visit again. Great food and great value for money! Definitely worth trying!

Recently stayed for 3 nights whilst at a conference. All of the staff were incredibly welcoming and chatty, room (no.4) was clean, comfortable, spacious and homely. The Full Yorkshire Breakfast was the absolute star of the show, best I've had in years, and the location spot on for the town centre shops and bars and conference centre. Highly recommend staying here

Popped in whilst looking for a quick lunch. Very unusual setting for a tea room but works well with about 10 tables set up between the pews & the altar. The pews act as an overflow area if all tables are taken but we arrived as one was being vacated. Very friendly staff, a relaxing atmosphere and excellent value for money. Menu is limited to a choice of rolls, soup and a tempting range of homemade cakes & scones. Rolls could have improved if pickle, mustard or mayonnaise had been offered but the cakes & scones made up for this as they were very nice. The church itself is a delightful building and worth a visit in it’s own right. An interesting alternative lunch option.
