Splendid peanut soup and fufu. The TZ was worth more than I expected. Really nice atmosphere with human relations even though the physical environment is not spacious enough but yeah its worth it to drive all the way from Winchester to Reading to eat traditional Ghanaian/African dishes 😀

I was last in Ghana in 2010 and regularly had jollof rice with fresh fried fish or fried chicken. Fast forward 2023 and after finishing a long 12 hour shift I saw this takeaway outlet and was so tempted to try the menu out. Had to go for the Jollof Rice with Fried Chicken and Plantain. Excellent choice and very well recommended.

Not much inside to look at really as it’s very small. Came on a Sunday (yes, I know it’s a peak day) but certainly not at a peak time. The place was fairly full (perhaps 12 patrons). Stood at the counter waiting to enquire about a table. For several minutes. Waiting. And more waiting. Nobody bothered to acknowledge my presence. A couple ahead of me encountered a similar fate. Grew tired of standing there and finally left to dine elsewhere. Yes, I understand a place might get busy. However, not being able to handle (under) 20 patrons without difficulty seems amateurish. And quite frankly ridiculous. Won’t be back.

Betty's is my first stop every Friday night for a take out that tastes like home cooking. I've been a loyal customer since I found this tiny family restaurant, 3 years ago and the food never disappoints. They have a diverse menu to suit all including meat, fish and vegetarian options. Prices start at around £3 for a snack. My go to is Jellof rice and Turkey with a serving of okra stew. Each portion is £5 although you can order larger. This feeds my family of 3 (1 adult 2 little people) so the portions are generous. That said If you're really hungry you could try to conquer it alone. I've never eaten in, but am in awe of the dexterity of those who dine traditionally with a water bowl to wash and rinse their fingers. Cutlery is available to those less practiced. They serve a few Ghanaian drinks too. The lively ambiance, bright orange décor and the helpful, polite, nature of the staff make this place a welcome treat. If you've never had Ghanaian, it's a great place to begin. If you've been disappointed elsewhere; let Betty's restore your faith in great food. Start with the Jellof rice and work your way through the menu. I highly recommend. See you on Friday Betty..!

Probably the only Ghanaian restaurant in Reading, cos the place was choked up with people on the day (Sunday) we went. Not very spacious, and the food took very long to be served cos the restaurant is operated by only the married couple. The cost of food is fairly expensive. The food tasted good.

Ok, Betty's Bistro is probably not the best choice for a romantic candlelit dinner (even though I am sure that the friendly staff would be able to source a candle for you). African music is blaring and the place (bright orange and about the size of the average front room) is brimming with diners, people waiting for their takeaways and some young guys who only seem to be there to have a chat with the staff. I love it - it feels more like Accra than Reading! There are plenty of Ghanaian specialties to choose from and different sizes are available, which is great if you visit with children or want to try a selection of dishes. I ordered a large portion of Jollof rice with fried chicken and a bottle of water, which cost me 5.50. A bargain! The portion was huge, the rice tasty (even though I have to say that I prefer it slightly spicier) and the fried chicken was about the nicest you can get. I am definitely going back! Please note: they only take cash.

AMAZING! My self and a couple of friends went to Reading for the weekend and we decided to have some Ghanaian cuisine before we left and were not disappointed. First of all there was such a large list to choose from we were spoilt for choice, and on top of that, they had different portion sizes which was also very helpful. The service was amazing, we even requested a couple of songs to be played for us of which they didn't hesitate to do so. And when they food arrived, we were very very happy. Would 10/10 recommend.
