Below Decks in Torbay

Below decks is a really great place for a drink but the food and service is well below the average pub. My wife had cod goujons and chips - she was ill all night and brought the food back up. I had king prawn salad with avocado it was very bland and came 40 minutes after my wife’s food our party of 11 all had issues with the food and although one person was reimbursed for cod goujons that she couldn’t eat. 3 of the party didn’t get any food at all. The service and after service was very poor - I wouldn’t complain here as they become very intimidating we were glad to leave

Fantastic spot overlooking the marina , with a lovely little glass covered area to keep you warm, perfect location. Staff were kind and helpful , very friendly and attentive. We shared a sea food platter lunch and it was delicious. Large variety of fresh sea foods, particularly enjoyed the mussels in a sauce . Was more than enough for two people left very happy.

The best food and the best atmosphere! Had the best night celebrating a friends birthday.. thank you to all the staff and our waitress Maisy who went above & beyond to ensure we had the best evening ever! Thank you

Great food and a live band highly recommend

Arrived at 11:30 on Mothering Sunday. Lots of space. Menu said they were serving breakfast/brunch til 12:00. Went to order & was told they were only serving Breakfast Baps because they were prepping for Lunch. Asked if they could serve toast - but NO. If you can cook eggs, bacon, sausages etc for. Breakfast Bap, why couldn’t you manage a piece of gluten free toast? Answer, because you don’t care! We are locals & have used the restaurant since they opened or at least since they were owned by the doctor’s wives.! Service has always fluctuated, depending on the staff member. The guy managing the front end, has just lost a regular customer. Lots of better places around the harbour.

Love going here on a day off for a few beers. Nice devon cove on tap and lovely staff. Dog friendly also. Yet to eat here but Will do soon

Nice harbour front bar, great for a drink. Has outdoor seating for warm days too. Great views and away from town and traffic.

Lovely spot down on the harbour, staff were excellent, good choice of food freshly cooked and excellent value. Music nights are great also

I love this place! Food is gorgeous. I haven't tried everything on the menu yet, but what I have tried has been delicious. Staff are attentive and nothing is too much trouble. With the covered outside seating, you can sit and while away the day/night overlooking the marina... even with our unpredictable weather! I cannot recommend this place enough

Tried to book over the phone but it appears there may be a phone line issue as I let the guy know when we arrived, we ended up booking online for 8pm sat eve. Sat down , ordered drinks , tried to order the seafood platter but was told it was sold out ....OK I will have the mussels, sorry sold out ......do you have any seafood ....only seabass..... .... Very disappointed as it was for my birthday and I picked it cos of the fantastic reviews......I wanted to walk out but our 13 year old was starving, so we ate there in the end ......food was good , service was great , .....just gutted they had no seafood at 8pm on a sat eve in February.

The steak sandwich on the light bites menu was absolutely bloody fantastic. Also, the peppercorn sauce side was one of the nicest sauces I've had the pleasure of having near a sandwich.

Ate here yesterday, the food was fab. We had a seafood platter, tasted fresh and cooked beautifully. The staff were friendly and attentive. Would definitely visit again.

We ate here this evening. The food was wonderful and the service equally lovely and attentive with lovely staff. We will definitely return as always nice to find somewhere in Torquay with quality

Were there with my partner on 31 of December… portions were noticeably smaller than usual! Also not so tasty as it was before. Sadly cuz it was our fave place ! Will search for another place for dinners.

Wow what an amazing place. Been lucky to have dined here a few times but my 1st Christmas meal here. From the moment I stepped in the restaurant I was treated so well. All the staff were welcoming and super efficient. Food was delicious and came out at the same time for a group of 9. We will be back

Great breakfast using good quality ingredients, great outlook over the harbour.

The food here was unbelievably good and great value for money. Live music on the evening we attended which made it a nice chilled atmosphere. We were looked after by Maisie who was amazing. Highly recommend 👍🏻

We stopped here Monday 14th Oct just for a drink but the food we saw coming out looked good, so we decided to have a meal we had the seafood platter it was delicious 😁 I usually don’t eat squid as it’s taste like rubber but the squid was amazing. We had desserts too and the crumble was lovely 🥰 The guys serving us were both friendly attentive polite and funny too Will definitely be returning before our weeks break is over (remember to take photos next time)

Can't beat this place for atmosphere, really friendly and happy vibes. The fish platter is wonderful , as is the soup. However, I once tried the lemon pesto chicken pasta, sadly it didn't have any lemon , or pesto so it was just chicken pasta 😅 still enjoyed my evening though, just won't order that one again and stick with the soup.

Visited based on previous reviews and this place lives up to its excellent reputation. You can always rate a venue based on the quality of their sausages, and these were pretty good .We had 2 of their Below Decks Breakfasts with extra Black Pudding. All cooked perfectly, with great service and lovely environment. Only thing I would change is having hash browns without onion in them. My preference

Went here for food and drinks . It was lovely . Dog friendly inside and out . Would like to personally thank Anna for the amazing service we received from her . Her customer service was outstanding . Thank you . Will definitely return and highly recommend.

I asked for hot Latte because the last time I was at below decks it came out Luke warm. Nice coffee, but it was Luke warm🙄

Great food ruined by ear shatteringly loud live band then restaurant music. I love a bit of live music but the bass was way to loud and catering to the drunk people dancing out front. After band finished the music playing over the PA was way too loud despite the restaurant/bar emptying out at 9.30pm. Our server was very erratic and in dire need of customer service training as she seemed a bit under the influence, dunno if this place has a hippy vibe or what but was definitely not feeling it. Besides that I could not fault the food which was great and resonably priced, was just a shame I had to spend 2 hrs shouting to have a conversation with friends etc

Awesome place and top class service, top class food. We had a drink here before we caught the boat trip to Brixham, had a couple of drinks, very friendly staff. We came back and got straight off the boat, decided to eat here, food was awesome. Staff were very friendly and the restaurant and drinking areas were extremely clean and well looked after.. Would definitely recommend a visit here..

What a shame to have to give a local business a bad review but today's service was the last straw, I have been using below decks for years, the past year it seems to be getting worse! We have visited multiple times this summer spending most days over £100 a meal with our inlaws and our groups we dive with for breakfast, lunch and dinner and every time something gets missed or not given at all. Previous visits other people on the table get there meal and one person is sat waiting for there's until others are half way through the meal, other occasions coffees being brought cold because they have been sat at the bar waiting to be brought over, meals missing items or not as have been ordered. Then this morning 5 people had their breakfast brought over and I had ordered mine before the 5 people, then I asked for mine to one of the young waiters and he said oh its coming then 40 mins later now everyone had finished I went up and asked for a refund as I'd still not had mine, the guys inside said oh have u still not got yours I said no I'd like a refund everyone has finished eating one lad said you ordered ages ago I said I know! He said they are doing it now I said no I don't want it, he said not a all I said no its too late, he gave me a refund of just my breakfast not my drink or the toast that was given 40 mins ago without my breakfast, it's really disappointing as I've brought large groups here after diving ect and something seems to always go wrong. If this had been the first time I wouldn't have put a review but this has now happened multiple times in the year at various times lunch, breakfast ect and previous times no apology or nothing, also it was not busy when we arrived this morning so really disappointing.

First time here and didn’t disappoint…fantastic views of the harbour, great atmosphere and the food was hearty with generous portions. Would definitely recommend 👌🏻

I could have written a dozen great reviews for this place already! Incredible food, quite literally every time. The service is always fab and the vibe is super chill. If you’re here on holiday, don’t miss this hidden gem. And if you’re a local and this isn’t somewhere you eat regularly, you better check yourself 😉

Brilliant seafood platter, only thing better than the taste was the cost as it was well priced. Great views and atmosphere with some good lads behind the bar.

Amazing visit - the food was spot on - we had the seafood platter and it was perfect. Fresh mussells, fresh crab, fresh prawns cooked to perfection.

Well ai must say our experience was top notch.The staff were very friendly and helpful and the bacon roll and drinks were delicious. What can I say about the surroundings apart from the cafe is situated in Torquay marina and you wouldn’t find a nicer spot,so much going on around us.We loved it.

We visited for breakfast. The service was very good. Nice food as well, reasonably priced. We then learnt they had a band playing in the evening so we went back. Very friendly and fun atmosphere..

Probably one the worst breakfasts I have had. Over cooked, cold and over priced for what i got. The bacon was like eating cardboard. As a local I had wanted to try this place for ages but won’t go back and certainly wouldn’t recommend it. Lots of staff but still pretty poor service.

Disappointing lunch, slow service, lukewarm food & pricey.

Awful service. Very disorganised ordering system. Was left waiting for my drinks for 10 mins at the bar. Thought it was just a one off, but the next two rounds were the same.

A very nice chilled out afternoon. Spent on the harbourside friendly staff able to turn their hand to changes requested on their menu and it was superb. We will see you shortly. Wouldn't hesitate to go back there again or recommend it. Plus they had a load of funky tunes that just made you feel like you were on holiday. Well done to all.

This place seems like it's run by mostly very young staff who clearly don't have the life experience and personality to really make the customer feel welcome and at ease, almost like everything is to much hard work, no smiles no going out of their way to really push customer service!!! I can't understand for the life of me why this is so apparent in a place like this? So after ordering my food and drink I sat to listen to a bunch of teenagers that work their bleet on and on and absolute rubbish - why the hell doesn't the manager get them to pull their weight or do that in the back? Customers that want a nice experience don't want to listen to load of kids messing around!!! Where are the standards, where is the professional heart of a harbour restaurant... Clearly nowhere to be seen.

To be honest the dish was pretty good. What ruined everything was that we had a dish of mussels and fries but the fries were forgotten. We had to request them and it took way too long. We had already finished the dish. We asked for a small commercial gesture: another small portion of mussels so that we could eat the fries with them... They never arrived... We left before because it really took too long and yet there weren't many people there. serve. Damage

Friendly staff, delicious food and all round pleasant ambience.

Excellent full English with excellent black coffee. Bit expensive, but probably paying for the harbour views.

We only had drinks. The service was great and there is a glass enclosure outside the restaurant with great views of the Harbour. It was a very pleasant place to have a rest and something to drink.

Great place for a meal, food service was friendly and the food was fabulous, especially the Mussels with cider and Bacon. The venue is a victim of its own success in some ways, though. When going for a night out in a premium diner such as this, you would not expect to queue up at the bar between courses for drinks. The bar was really busy, not so much for the food but for the drinkers. I was disappointed at the beer not being served cold enough, but one pump on a flash cooler constantly pouring is bound to struggle. Added to this, the price of £6.50 a pint served in a flimsy plastic glass is not what I would expect for the price.

Did some research and this looked good for choice/value. Didn’t disappoint with attentive staff and great service. Wanted to try the seafood platter and was amazing for the price. Loads of prawns, mussels. crab etc and beautifully cooked. Would go back again without hesitation

We had the seafood platter here. Half the price of further up the harbour and fantastic. The mussels and sauce were the best I've had anywhere. Only criticism is we needed a spoon to finish the sauce as it was so good!!!

Highly recommend the Seafood Platter here. It was very tasty and we particularly enjoyed the Moules marinière and its delicious sauce.

Had the king prawn and avocado salad which was totally amazing, the best salad dressing I have ever had. My partner had prawn jacket, he said it was the tastiest jacket he had ever had. Very clean, amazing staff and great service . Wish I lived in Torquay, if you visit go to this place, you won’t be sorry. Very very reasonable prices.

We ate here one evening after visiting Babbacombe and Kent’s Cavern and really enjoyed our meal. I had Beetroot and Squash Wellington with tender stem broccoli and red wine thyme sauce which was delicious with a beautiful mix of flavours and textures. My friend and I both had the Below Decks Chocolate Sundae - it was to die for! Our lovely waiter Will was attentive and looked after us very well. The music in the restaurant was amazing - a brilliant playlist which we all enjoyed, and not so loud that we couldn’t hear ourselves talk! All in all a great experience - we will be back for sure!

Altogether a good place for a meal. Good choices, good food, and good service.

Called in for a quick lunch. Excellent food and service. So we returned for evening meal. Again enjoyed the meal and feelof the place. Maybe be back before we leave

We hired the glass function room which sits on the side of the marina for my friends hen party. The room has stunning views and a lovely terrace area. Staff are super helpful and I would definitely host another party there! Thank you Below Decks!

Funky bar down in the marina. Music, booze, coffee, burgers, nice outside area next to the water to sit at tables with table service. Can get very busy at popular times, Fri & Sat evenings etc so be aware, but good fun.

Two weeks ago we both had a cooked breakfast. It was excellent, freshly cooked and well presented. Service was very prompt and staff friendly too.

Not had food. Great place for a sunset drink. Sometimes live music too. Great location at the end of the marina. Bring sun lotion.

Expected to be able to order local seafood but everything was out of a bag. Felt they could have used local fish etc. what we ate was pleasant but not great (surf & turf) with three prawns on a piece of quite tough steak. I had a Camembert starter which was fine. Could be much better.

Fantastic place to eat !! had a steak baguette (finally got someone who can cook steak 🥩!!) wife had prawn Rosemarie baguette, son had steak burger (he said it was the best burger he’s ever had) my next visit I had the chicken wings which were a bit dry but lots of lovely tasty sauce yum! Staff are great plenty of seating inside and a few tables outside, Brucie bonus is the bus shelter over the Quayside 👍🏼👍🏼 one of my favourite places❤️ plenty of parking above 👍🏼just along from the harvester(which I strongly recommend you walk past to this place to 👍🏼)

Great service and food was very good

We visited for lunch and sat in the covered outdoor area. It was early May and a sunny day so lovely to sit and look out at the harbour. The seafood platter was delicious and service was quick and friendly. Good gluten free options too.

Great spot tucked away from the main drag with cheerful staff and warm welcome, that is open throughout the day and throughout the year. Feels like a local place, rather than just as tourist spot. Plus, on non windy days, outside seating on edge of marina.

Great food, great service, great ambience. Unfortunately the shells were out, but the table top was still very good. Kids had burgers and they were delicious too!

Staff were very helpful and the food was excellent. I can highly recommend the chunky chips for a quick snack. The cream tea's did Devon proud too. A lovely place to literally watch the world go by.

Sat in the sun outside for a couple of hours and in that time had 3 different DJs playing great tunes, if the sun had stayed out we would have stayed even longer! Good fun, a great spot and fab music. Staff were lovely.

Wow, the best burger ever in UK. I didn't want to eat there, as have no people in(weather was horrible) , my husband said let's give a chance. I am happy we did, the food was amazing, the below desk burger was my best burger, I ever had in Uk. Thank you Chef for that, you made my day. The waiter was a nice guy he served well. I recommend this restaurant, if we come back to Torquay, definitely come back to eat here 😊

Great service with an upbeat smile, lovely food and plenty of it for the price. Dog friendly which is a must for us, good selection of dishes and a great coffee. Always go there for either just a coffee and cake or Lunch when we are in Torquay.

I only had a cappuccino and a latte. Again, very friendly staff. Lovely location. Can't say anything about the food. We didn't have a thing to eat.

A mid winter visit probably didn't do justice to the veiw and outdoor seating experience but the inside experience was fine. Establishment is fine for a meal and chat with friends, colleagues and family. Not really a romantic restaurant if you want a candle lit couple special occasion.
