Stopped by here whilst on business in Exeter a few months ago. I seem to remember having a nice 'blond' IPA, which was very tasty. Shame I can't remember what it was called! The outside terrace overlooks the cathedral to one side so is in a nice location, in the warmer months. I returned a couple of times for a couple of pints whilst out in town. Outdoor return. The female barmaid engaged in conversation and was friendly to a townie like me ( London ).

I was visiting Exeter to drop off my daughter at Uni and had some spare time so looked up good craft beer bars in Exeter. Visited here pre-dinner one evening in August 2018. We had a really good time here for well over an hour in the end. The barman was great; knowledgeable, polite and chatty. Choice of beers and ales is superb. There is seating with tables both indoors and out. The location is marvellous. One entrance is on South Street and the other is on the Cathedral Green! Can't wait to go there again! Highly recommended!

Funny little bar, populated by often quite eccentric drinkers....and really great fun The wide range of European and US bottled beers is a delight, added to which the owner James has sourced an ever changing variety of National & Local beers from around Britain Started off a few years ago as a US-themed bar, but this was dropped in time With the opening of James's new bar, A LITTLE DROP OF POISON in nearby Fore Street it seems that the Beer Cellar may soon become more of a licensed Coffee Bar A pity, but perhaps a sign of the times

Cracking craft beer bar close to the cathedral 6 keg taps and 4 handpumps dispensing are and unusual beers for tge area. The two Tapstone beers I tried were wonderfully hoppy and unfiltered. A welcome change from the dull brown malty twiggy beers available in many other local establishments. Opens at 1100 too which was a real bonus! Great selection of craft beer in cans as well. Fancied a pint in a non-chain establishment so when we came across the Beer Cellar it was exactly what we were looking for. The barman was really helpful and friendly and the beer and ciders we tried were lovely! (I had the elderberry cider which I should imagine becomes lethal after a while!) It was lovely to sit in the shadow of Exeter’s beautiful cathedral and enjoy a quite pint or two and a chat. Would definitely return.

There are still only a couple of micro pubs in Devon & Cornwall which is a pity. This place in central Exeter not far from Cathedral Close Is about average size and as expected a conversion of a defunct shop unit. We had a pleasant couple of drinks and the staff were friendly and helpful but it differed considerably from the other micro pubs we have enjoyed. A row of beer pumps. A lot of fridge display cabinets with lots of bottles from a not just local brewers but Europe North America and elsewhere. The menu is extensive and a bit complicated touching on prissy. Although we heard none while we were there we were told by other customers that recorded music is commonplace. It may be a byproduct of the evolution of the genre but I couldn't help but feel that the Beer Cellar (the name slightly gives it away) may have drifted off some distance from the founding father in Herne and perhaps the extensive selection and general approach might be more suited to a shopping mall or trendy night time zone. Micro pubs need little more than some high thin tables some simple benches, all the booze on tap from the casks racked up in a temperature controlled area and the food little more than simple portions of the best local cheese pate and maybe cold beef. All that said, the Beer Cellar is a welcome addition to the Exeter options and is doing well to survive.

This small boutique bar serves an astonishingly wide selection of beers, ales, lagers and stouts. Situated on the entrance to Cathedral Green the wide windows allow ample opportunity for people watching as you quaff your chosen tipple (in the appropriate glass mark you). The staff and owners can talk informatively about their selection of draught beers which change frequently, and by frequently I mean weekly at least. If you fancy a proper beer or are an aficionado of the grain then this place is for you. CAMRA membership is not required although if you are a member you may feel that you have died and gone to heaven. They also serve a small selection of food (needed if the session turns to three pints or more), which is cooked to order, reasonably priced and tasty. It's not gourmet but then if that is what you want then you are in the wrong place. To be fair not many Michelin stared places serve a decent pint let alone five or six!My only complaint is that the bar is a little small and sometimes that means its standing room only but I declined to dock a point as that is hardly their fault. Although I beleive they have one (or is it two) other bars in the West Country this is in effect a small local enterprise and deserves full support for all that. They have just been closed for redecoration and I will be popping in soon to see the new decor - get the brown ale in chaps!!

Been a few times, gave it 5 stars when it opened and now as a frequent customer I felt the need to give it another review, it never has the same beers on so its one of the only places you can go and be guaranteed a beer you haven't tried before, there are other pubs using the craft beer slogan but I don't think having three bottled beers in a fridge and same beer on tap count as craft whereas the beer cellar always has different craft lagers and ales on tap as well as lots of other different beers, as well as a huge bottled selection. Also staff are very knowledgeable and will offer samples of beer they think you'll like too. Not the biggest pub in Exeter, it's more like a Belgian beer cafe which is part of the charm. And if you're just looking to get a coffee not only is it great it's also half the price of anywhere locally too, the snacks available vary but are also delicious, a real gem, great place to go whilst the wife goes shopping!!!

So many great beers, all so nicely kept and served. Agree with the post below, as a female beer drinker, a two-thirds glass is just what is needed to bridge the volume gap between a measly half-pint and the seemingly masculine full pint! I don't have any qualms with drinking from pint glass, but you can't deny that it is much more continental, and therefore elegant, to drink from a smaller vessel...Had the food here once too, which was pretty good; beef brisket was lovely and tender and the mac'n'cheese pretty darn cheesy! My partner and I have suggested a few times that fresh pretzels would be a great accompaniment to the beers. Like the aesthetic of this place and, at the weekend, the vibe is good. Weekdays can feel a bit "blokey" and unwelcoming, with a strange mix of local folk dotted around nursing an afternoon stout. In a sense, it's a shame this bar isn't bigger because you can rarely find somewhere to sit on a Friday or Saturday night; but perhaps if it were, it would lose the intimacy which makes it so charming in the first place.

I've been a couple of times and there's nowhere else in the area that serves such a great range of craft beers. The Brewdog Punk IPA and dark Star Reveation were both fantastic. I find that I only need a half rather than a pint because they've got so much taste.I took my wife, who doesn't drink, and was delighted to find they serve a really nice pot of teas as well!

Good collection of craft beers. Sells beer in 3rd of a pint as well as halves and pints which is a great idea of you want a lunch time tipple without clouding the shopping judgement :-) Nice choice of hearty sandwiches. We had the Reuben which had lots of meat and cheese - very tasty. Good banter with the young host and fellow drinkers. A nice friendly atmosphere. Not the place to go if you were expecting muzak and cheap lager, thank goodness.A great find !

This for me has been one of the best of many new places opening in Exeter.Fantastic range of craft beers and seems to be a real passion around it. Any pub crawl or afternoon out with a mate cannot be without this bar. A mature customer so you don't get all the morons from town in there. Really great it's an independent and hope it grows strong to stay there! I certainly will help.A word of caution, not really a place to go with the mrs and as a craft beer place gets those pompous CAMRA lot analysing which can be annoying. Just shut up, drink and enjoy!

I've been here quite a few times 1st time asked them to get more larger in, as they only had dortmunder tastes of nothing! its a beer cellar I get that. I get dragged along with my mates who are into it and theres nothing for me ive tried taster after taster and to me its like a mouthful of hairspray. Get some staropamen or even some blonde leffe as compromise. good service tho friendly and knowledgeable.

I discovered the Beer Cellar a few months ago; I stopped by for a quick pint after lunch and stayed in closing! Since then I've lost count of the evenings and afternoons I've spent in this gem of a place. It almost goes without saying that you won't find a better pint in Exeter but that's not why it's become my local (well, my local 6 miles from my house). James and boys are friendly, funny and welcoming and the regulars (if I do say so myself) are always happy to chat and share a few pints with you. I've been here with my family, I've been here with my mates, I've plonked myself on a stool at the bar after a crap day and I've never had anything short of a great time. On top of all that the food is stunning, perfect bar food. Trust me, if you're in Exeter and looking for a great pint (or shot for that matter), some great conversation, a fantastic pulled pork sandwich or just somewhere to sit in the corner and watch the world go by this is the place for you.

I have eaten and longed here a few times but it is fair to say that the beer really does take centre stage, and rightly so!If, like me, you love to enjoy that obscure Belgian followed by a rare British ale then this is the place to go!The Fat Pig Offers better food and atmosphere but this place is unrivalled when it comes to the all important ale!

As the title says this is my second review of the Beer Cellar. When I wrote my first review I had only visited the place once. Now I have lost count how many times I've been here, as me and my partner are frequent visitors here. They've kept up with the brilliant beer they get in, and every time we come here (which is weekly) there's always something different on the pump or the fridge. Some people may think it's pricy but some of the beer they get is brilliant and is definitely worth the price. The new menu they have is phenomenal and I'd recommend the Pulled Pork Sandwich, best sandwich I've ever tasted. The flavours of the homemade apple slaw and the pork just melts in your mouth. All the bar staff are friendly and have vast knowledge about the beer, and we've gotten to know the staff and the other regulars so well they're more like friends then the "locals" and the "bar staff" (we even got a Xmas card from the staff). I am always telling my friends that I know are beer drinkers to come here and I'd recommend anyone to come here as well.

Probably the best pub in Exeter.. headed by James and his sidekick Nick, this wonderful little pub is just the very best! Very knowledgeable staff, something you don't get very much of these days. Lots of beers from around the world. James and Nick make sure they know what they are selling. They sell beer in 1/4, 1/2 and pints - ideal for session ales (as some have very high volume of alcohol!). There is always a warm welcome and I consider the boys to be friend, not just the bar staff, This is not the place to go is you want cheap beers and a rowdy atmosphere and a fight after closing time. It is a lovely, laid back bar with class beer and the customers reflect this. Now. On to the food. The place has been open little over a year. Food slowly came into fruition. Nice little sandwiches, sweet potato fries etc. But over time the menu has become so much more than that. Unusual food like black pudding scotch egg! This, this by the way, is to die for! Don't expect "alphonse le ponse" style food - its just good, freshly cooked, tasty, hot gorgeous food and a very generous portion to help soak up the wonderful ales! The boys have got the balance perfect. I can not praise the place, staff and food enough. I almost didn't write a review as I really don't want everyone knowing about the place as I want it all to myself but then I thought it really is too good not to share! See you soon James and Nick!

We have been going here since it first opened, I don't always write an instant review as it takes time for a business to settle in, well truth is it has always been consistently great, the staff are friendly and extremely knowledgable (not like the majority of pubs), you tell them what you like and they will give you tasters and pointers, the beer here is amazing, I have learnt so much about different world beers. This is not the place where you get gangs of idiots necking 10 pints of fosters then causing trouble, its where you go to enjoy a beer, it's all about the beer, also it's well worth drinking halfs then you can try more different ones. They always have new beers in as well so you don't get bored. They have cheap beer and some very expensive beer (rare ales from the U.S. Etc), treat it like you are drinking wine and not necking it for the sake of it. I have been in on my days off too and had the coffee which is way cheaper and nicer than Costa-lot coffee. The food is great too considering it's not a restaurant but it's a pub, it reminds me of the places and beer culture you get on the continent. We are so lucky to have a place like this in Exeter, a real gem.

A great place to relax, if you like that feeling you get when sitting in a nice bar somewhere in Europe when on holiday, then this is the only place I know of in Devon that feels like that! An amazing selection with the staff knowing what they are selling, and know the beer well which makes all the difference after visiting St. Austell pubs, where the staff are miserable and don't care about the beers at all! A great atmosphere when it's busy, always laughter and nice people in there, not the sort of place that attracts annoying drunk teenagers, although I'm sure Nick the barmen wouldn't mind. It's the sort of place where you are encouraged to chat to other drinkers/couples which is a massive difference when you compare it to the dreary weatherspoons just down the road from here!If your in Exeter it's seriously worth a visit, even if it's just for coffee. The food menu is great and good value, the food really suprised me as I wasn't expecting much from the place at all! great americana style food that suits most of the beers well! well I think thats all I can say about the place really! Massive pro:No mainstream swill being served, if your a fosters drinker, go and broaden your horizons you better beer! One Con:Cant fit everyone in some nights!

I was getting very bored and tired wandering around the sales being dragged by the mrs.it didnt take much for the wife to agree with me that we would go for a drink instead of the usual coffee house. On entering it reminded me very much of a corner bar you find in somewhere like Amsterdam.Sat at the bar on a couple of springy stools,i was then treated to about a dozan little tasters of the beers on offer.I class myself as a bit of a real ale buff but hadnt heard of none of these i tried. The barman as well as being a very nice bloke is also very knowable about what he is serving you, what a change that makes. The spirits on offer are also not the run of the mill ,but the other half greatly enjoyed the couple of bourbons she tried. As the afternoon drifted into the early evening it started to get full and those trying the 8% ale on offer were quickly laughing away creating a great atmosphere. The place is an absolute plus for the city centre and i bet in the summer it would be great sat outside looking over the cathedral.I really really enjoyed the place and so will you.If your planning a pub crawl in Exeter make sure this is included in the itinery.

On a trip to Exeter my husband and I wanted a rest and a drink. We chose the Beer Cellar because I wanted a coffee and he wanted something stronger. It was a very good choice. The coffee was excellent and the choice of beer - both bottled and on pump - was extensive. The bar man was very knowledgeable about the ales and chatted to us about a beer they were featuring which was local to our home town. We saw they did food which seemed refreshingly different to most pub fare but we had planned to eat elsewhere. We will sample the menu on our next trip to Exeter. It has outdoor seating which will be great in warmer weather but a bit chilly for December. Not to be missed if you like good beer and coffee.
