Beefeater Grill in St Albans

We have had some nice meals here over the years, but now as there are rumours of closure, some employees have lost interest or have left.

Have eaten here in the past and had great food, but somehow we keep going back despite the downsides. Think it will be the last time. It’s not an exaggeration to say that half the menu was unavailable. On a Sunday evening: no roast, no ribs, no half-chicken, no salmon, and only two cuts of steak, one of which isn’t on the menu except as part of mixed grills with the other unavailable items and hence not available either. Service is always slow here: today’s was 62 minutes after arriving. Staff are pleasant enough but oblivious to the dismal experience. The venue is nice, but they tend to seat people in the fairly standard-looking part where you don’t see any of the traditional mill. On a good day, it can be an enjoyable experience. But it will always be slow, and the rest is too variable to recommend.

Worst food. Natsos didn't have any guacamole nor fresh melted cheese as per menu. It was horrible. Staff unfriendly not caring. Meals were not the usual standard. We complained and were told the whole building is up for sale and regular chefs left and temporary chef from agency come in. Would not recommend going there. Such a shame as outdoor grounds are beautiful with a running stream .

Everything you’d expect from a Beefeater except, today, Sarah from Luton was working at the Moor Mill and made the evening in all honesty. Great service, polite, attentive and a personality.

The worse meal I have had in a long time, we went here for a meal for my parents 60th Wedding Anniversary and the service was awful, the server could not cope with simple tasks and left most of the tables around us unhappy, she did not clear plates from the tables, no cutlery, food was cold and I had 8 chips on my plate, she kept disappearing and customers had to keep going downstairs to find her, we waited 45 mins from our main meal for her to collect our plates and then we had to go get the menus ourselves for dessert, the meal took so long our parking nearly ran out, unsure if it is under new management but something has definitely changed since my last visit.

We've just returned from what was supposed to be a nice dinner for my wife's 50th birthday, and I acknowledge they were understaffed and they explained so before we sat down, but the service we received, (or rather, didn't) was beyond terrible. We were begrudgingly given a table outside, food & drinks orders were taken within 15 minutes so pretty good start, but then enters Josh... One mistake on the drinks... One drink missed off the order... We didn't make a fuss, but simply asked if it could be rectified, but boy did Josh kick up a stink about it being the new waitresses fault and not his... Even waved the drinks ticket at me to prove it wasn't his fault. Bless him, he did eventually rectify this mistake, but it must have been really difficult for him judging by the way he huffed and slammed the drink on the table spilling half of it in the process and then went back inside and made the new waitress cry and leave so when the floor manager had to bring out our food we were begged not to order any more drinks as they're now really, really short staffed. We had all ordered bottomless soda refills, but none of us had a second glass, despite waiting 45 minutes and asking twice, although Josh had time to bring his manager out a cup of coffee, have a chat with him and comment how beautiful and pink the sky was this evening... Thanks Josh. All in all a bit of a s#*t show guys. You can make excuses, and some of them we excepted, but this used to be a nice restaurant and it isn't anymore. Whether it's lack of staff, lack of training or just lack of caring, who knows and as the paying customer it's not my problem. We booked... we didn't walk in off the street and take you by surprise so why should it be my problem your staff can't stop bickering and spoiling my meal that I'm paying you for? On our way out we noticed someone from every table was asking for either money off or free drinks to compensate the poor service or lack of correct orders so I know it wasn't just our table or because we wanted to sit outside. Not even an apology... The girl at the till looked embarrassed and deliberately didn't ask if we enjoyed our meal, so I'm guessing it's just lack of caring. I was honestly embarrassed to have taken my family here tonight. I'll leave it on a positive note, it didn't rain. Sorry guys, I'm not spending my money here ever again.

What a disappointment! Got there for Sunday lunch to be told that lamb was off the menu Therefore no Roast Lamb or Super Roast Sunday lunch. We all ordered our mains. Unfortunately one of our friends had cold chips and my wife had new potatoes which were as hard as nails. We told the staff who did apologies and brought out some more chips. My wife said she would have mash potato as a replacement. I ordered a beef pie with a side of onion rings. I was told a bit later that there were no onion rings! When we ordered coffees we were told they had no decaf coffee. We will NOT be going there again.

We weren't offered the Summer Evening Set Menu even though according to the website it is available on a Saturday night so we had to choose from the main menu. So we ordered starters & a main course & waited quite a while for the starters which were good. However, before we had finished eating them, a waitress arrived with our main courses. We sent them away as we hadn't finished the starters & told them that we would still expected them to be kept hot. 3 minutes later, 2 different waiters reappeared with them. By this time we had literally just eaten the last mouthfuls of the starters so we accepted the main courses which by now were only warm not hot. Apart from the temperature, the food was OK although one of the steaks had quite a bit of gristle which wasn't good. A few minutes later whilst we were obviously still eating, a waitress appeared to ask if everything had been OK with the meal & could she clear the plates!!! Needless to say, we reacted badly as we did want to finish the meal we were paying for. We had planned to stay for desert but changed our minds, paid without leaving a tip & left. The food itself was fine but the service was abysmal - I've never before anywhere where they've tried to clear your plates before you've even finished eating. We haven't been to Moor Mill for many years. I doubt we'll be going back any time soon if that's the level of service they offer.

Poor food, service and staff rude. Took 2.5hour to get two course. Rib eye Steak was like rubber and cost £20+ I would recommend to avoid this place.

Booked a 12.15 table for lunch, hoping that by getting early the service would be fairly prompt. Staff friendly. However, the restaurant is dirty, food on the floor, sticky tables etc. Not vacuumed often enough. The staff wear dirty, food stained clothing which is not appetising. Food below average in terms of quality and taste. However, we did not wait long for our meal, which was a bonus. Outside seating area very welcoming and tidy and lovely location in the countryside.

Came here for a nice Sunday lunch with my mum. Had a lovely waitress Karen, who was brilliant. Excellent service! She was super speedy with serving us and delivering our food. Food was amazing! Had the beef Sunday roast cooked to perfection! It was great value for money! Would defo come back.

We paid a visit to our local Beefeater to spend a birthday free meal voucher. We were served by a lovely waitress Sarah, who was very friendly and attentive. The meal was up to Moor Mills usual good standards, (Chicken & ribs, Yum !) and reasonable price. I tried the new Bacon Relish which was lovely. Just wish they sold the bottles of 74 Hot Sauce !!

I was down staying at the premier Inn on a business trip and booked the meal deal visiting the moor mill over my stay. The waitress Sarah was very welcoming so friendly and helpful, thank you so much for the great service. The food and drinks were fabulous. Look forward to revisiting in the future

Food wasn’t very nice at all. Basic meals. Steak had to be corrected twice and still was sent back as it was awful. Asked for medium rare and came out well done and second came out with a moo. Plus side Waitress Jennifer was lovely! And done everything she could to help!

Went for my son’s birthday with the family all 15 of us!! We were greeted by a lovely lady called Sarah who throughout our few hours looked after us very well. She informed us of what wasn’t on the menu straightaway and let us know where the toilets were! She helped make our autistic son’s birthday a happy and joyful one! Thank you Sarah food came out hot, the menu was varied Beautiful restaurant in an old mill My only one negative is the booking for large parties! We physically had to drive to the restaurant to book as online and the automated telephone booking said there was no spaces. Couldn’t get to speak to anyone on the phone. I had same problem over Easter trying to book and that was at ALL our local beefeaters!

Great location, right next to where we were staying. We went for dinner the food was excellent and the service by Sarah was outstanding.

When we arrived we had a short wait for a table. Once we were seated, we were served by Ros who went over and above to make sure my son, who has multiple food allergies, could have something ‘safe’. We rarely eat out as a family as most places can’t cater for him. The food was great and not too long a wait. We were also served by Sarah who was equally as helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be back again soon!

A huge thank you to Ros and her team for providing a fabulous day for my parents and our family. You really did go over and above to give them exactly the day they wanted, low key and intimate but with a very relaxed and welcoming feel. Food came out hot and on time for almost 25 people and the drinks were delivered quickly (even the cocktails) !! The setting upstairs was really lovely and I can see why my parents picked this venue for their very special occasion. I would like to say a particular BIG thank you to both Sarah & Phil. Nothing was too much trouble and you are both a real credit to the business. Thank you all once again.

Booked a table, arrived inserted car number reg and then told no tables available as they were too short staffed both for serving in the kitchen. No apology just turned away truly appalling.

We always enjoy a good meal here and the staff are very helpful and friendly too and even know our drinks order now. We had a new waitress on this occasion, Sarah who is another great asset to the team.

Nice relaxed dinner steak and chips and great service from Sarah who worked so hard made us laugh and checked back on us to see if we needed anything it was a busy bank holiday Sunday but we received excellent hospitality from the lovely waitress

It's very quiet and as others have said there was nobody available at the bar when I entered. However the staff member who served me breakfast was friendly and efficient and the breakfast was decent.

After wasting time at Red Lion Radlett who didn’t have any roast beef dinners we came here without a booking. The manageress gave us a table she did warn us we may have to wait. They weren’t doing roast beef dinners but we both had sirloin steaks with really lovely chips and peppercorn sauce. The waitress was literally run off her feet but still had time to ask us how our food was. I really loved the fairy lights and cosy atmosphere. As I remembered I had a voucher for 40% off it was a bargain dinner. note to head office your staff work hard please put a few extra ones on at weekends.

I was going to say don't go but I have decided to go with three stars because it wasn't all bad and well done for Millie for helping out so. Through no fault of our own, we arrived at Moor Mill almost two hours before our table time and sat about and sat about and sat about. Because we need to enter our car registration into the device every no more than three hours we had to remember to do that, over and over - not just because of the wait for the table but also the wait for the food and the wait for the bill. It would have been better to have gone somewhere else for that bit. The resturant is built in an old mill building and the water mill workings are there to be seen. There is also a "wishing well" that is just a bucket of try coins. It doesn't even have water in it. My wings starter was disappionting. There were not enough of them and they were fairly dry as they were. My mixed grill was reasonably OK although the cow could have tried harder when it was growing the steak. I would have had a pudding but I didn't have time after all the delays. I understand that the grounds are nice but I cannot really comment as it was dark for the duration of our sojourn.

You'll be sitting in a slice of history: there has been a mill on this site for over a thousand years; the current building dates back to the 18th Century. So, how can you go wrong? Ordering food, that's how. Overlooking my prejudices about the Beefeater chain, I popped in for lunch with my young son. I should have listened to my inner-voice. Service was non-existent, the food was truly awful (how can you get a roast chicken and pizza wrong?) and after several additional complaints about the long wait for dessert, I was told that 'the chef doesn't have the ingredients' (despite the order going through the till and no one bothering to update us). While we waited for service, two staff members stood chatting about their jobs beside our table. "If they ask you to do the bins", the first waiter suggested to his new colleague, "tell them to stuff it. They don't pay you for bins. They take advantage". This conversation seemed to represent the general ambiance of the establishment; a once charming and genuiniely historic pub swallowed up by a downmarket and faceless chain. Of course, with a remote and lacklustre corporate entity running the show, no one takes accountability. The 'Beefeeter' logo is splashed is around like a flagship McDonald's, complemented by gormless art about "BEEF" and "EATING" (with charmless puns about cows) adorning ancient walls. A single framed picture explains the incredibly rich history - presumably for customers to pass the time while they wait hours to be served. And this probably sounds snobby, but I believe you can tell the class of a venue by its drinks menu; this one boasts no fewer than three types of Jagerbombs... It's obvious that this chain cares more about force-feeding patrons with its own brand motifs and cheap food than considering how it could help a genuinely unusual venue to flourish. And, had the founders known what would become of their beloved venue a millenium from its creation, they would have surely thrown themselves in the river outside.

We arrived a the end of a long journey (we were staying at the Premier Inn linked to the restaurant) to be told that there were no tables available. It was very clear from looking that there were. We walked back to the hotel and phoned Beefeater to make a booking, returned for our booking 15 mins later (to the surprise of the manager) and found only TWO other tables occupied. Food was at best, average. Ordered the cob salad (supposed to include avocado)..no avocado arrived, just a plate of salad. Drinks were painfully slow arriving, it was just awful, staff really couldn't be bothered. Apparently they were short staffed that night - not our problem. Returned in the morning for breakfast at our booked slot. Awful service and rude staff. Asked if I could order, received a curt response of 'wait'. My breakfast finally arrived and looked as if it had been thrown at the plate - picture attached. My partner's food finally arrived - mediocre. Had I not been at the hotel for a wedding I would not have used the Beefeater - in fact I would never use a Beefeater again after this experience.

Arrived at the door someone was behind the bar and signalled to go down a corridor…! Arrived up some steps to the so called restaurant…! Waited for 10 min no person around…! No greeting nothing…! No drink nothing…! Walked out past the Bar same person ignored us and answered the phone ..! No wonder there was no customers…!

Disappointing- poor service and I was presented with a very dry burger with no spicy mayo as per the menu. Then I had ketchup and mayo spilled on me and the chair next to me (the waiter didn’t even clean it up). The restaurant looks very tired and needs a spruce up.

Visited Moor mill on one of the only dry days this month, we wanted to have some food outside with our 2 year old grandson for my daughters birthday and to let him play in the outside play area. We arrived just after 5 pm and sat in the evening sun, I went to get menus. I was told by surly man behind the bar food is not being served, another staff member said they stop serving food outside at 5pm. They even locked the gates on the play area! The staff were miserable, didn't offer for us to have a table inside. There is nothing on the website stating food is not served outside from 5pm, or signs stating this on entry. We went to the Boot in Sarratt instead. Such a shame, it was so quiet in the garden.

Service was painfully slow and food arrived cold, and consequently wasn’t great. Only seemed to be one waitress in the whole dining room and she was run off her feet

While visiting family we went to Moor Mill as my mother has lovely memories of feeding the ducks. We booked online as although we wanted to sit outside weather was not looking good. Online booking was straightforward and we added a request as we needed disabled access and seating. When we arrived we got seated on the ground floor which was perfect. The service was very friendly and helpful. There is a great menu and we didn’t wait long between ordering and the food coming. My daughter went and feed the ducks in between which was lovely. We had a lovely time, great service, tasty food. On the way out we got to hand feed a couple of ducks which was great fun.

Had a lovely family lunch. Service was delightful. Lots of reminiscing about visits with my children years ago.

Friendly service and food was really good too, my Mum and I both had the lunchtime menu and we both has gammon which was delicious 😋
