My husband and i went to the Beckford Arms yesterday for a late lunch . We got there at 5 mins to 3 and the kitchen closed at 3pm .. When we asked if it was too late to get lunch ( we expected to be told the kitchen had closed ) we were pleasantly surprised when the we were told by a very cheerful member of staff that it would be no problem at all and we were shown straight to a table . The staff were so friendly and cheery and the food was amazing .. The pub has such a lovely atmosphere made even better by the friendly staff .. Full marks all round... such a joy to find a place like this we will definately go back ....

What a lovely meal we’ve just had at The Beckford, for starters with had the pork belly and smoked salmon both were delicious! After we were treating to the most tender pork chop I’ve ever had and my husband had a succulent chicken with amazing flavours! Dessert were also amazing. Service was the best I’ve received in this pub for a while, a really relaxed and tranquil ambiance with knowledgeable staff. Thank you Team Beckford

Big disappointment today having taken friends to what used to be a regular destination and a much loved pub. What has happened? The food was okay (fish and chips) nothing special with the batter rather undercooked. There really wasn’t that much choice. Very pedestrian…. but the service was dismal and disfunctional. We were completely ignored for at least 10 minutes and then had to ask 3 times for our drinks. So disappointing when you are introducing friends to somewhere you rate. The staff really need to be reset and reminded how to interact with customers. The only thing that came quickly was the bill. I did mention my disappointment to a member of staff who was polite and we reluctantly paid the 12.5% service charge but both kitchen and front of house need to raise their game. I see other guests have had similar experiences. You can do better Beckford!!,

This is a lovely pub and normally we enjoy the food and atmosphere but were disappointed on this occasion. The menu was not particularly interesting with one main course consisting mainly of cabbage and another of courgette and another a chicken leg at an expensive price. I decided on the burger which was OK, although it lacked seasoning and was rather bland. It was also disappointing that it did not come with a nice salad or anything except just chips scattered over the plate. I would expect more for the price and venue. The chicken dish was tasty but again there was not much of it. Another person had the fish and was told by a staff member to order a side dish as it didn't really come with anything! Sadly the person ordering it was left feeling hungry despite having a starter and had to stop on the way home to get something else. Shame really as we have always enjoyed eating here before.

The Beckford Arms—a place that once whispered promises of rustic charm and countryside sophistication. But, do not be fooled by the unchanged charming stone facade the internal organs of this once great pub have rotten. What now awaits you is a culinary catastrophe so profound it makes you question if any of the staff even know what a decent pub looks like. Let’s start with the burger, a dish so fundamental to a pub that it should be impossible to muck up. And yet, the new chef in the kitchen at The Beckford has managed to create something that could only be described as a taste-free hockey puck between two fat soaked buns. This double pâté burger was so dry it made the Sahara look like a lush oasis. As for flavor, it had all the zest of a damp dishrag. Was it beef? Was it cardboard? The line between the two has never been blurrier. And then there was the pork chop—a piece of meat so brutally overcooked that I feared for the welfare of the pig’s descendants. I’ve seen ceramic tiles with more give than this. One bite and you’re met with an experience so dry, so arid, that you can’t help but question all the life choices that led you to this exact moment. But the pièce de résistance, the absolute cherry atop this dreadful cake, our waiter. He had all the charm of a door-to-door double glazing salesman and the overfamiliarity of a childhood friend you’ve been trying to avoid for the past 15 years. His demeanour was that of a coked up divorceé who’s taken up waitering to hang around with the kids and flirt with customers. The Beckford might have had a lot going for it, but it seems this is no longer the case. In conclusion, if you find yourself meandering through the Wiltshire countryside, driven by the romantic notion of a quaint pub lunch at the Beckford of old, do yourself a favor—keep driving.

Beautiful place. We stopped at the inn to break up the journey back to London. Unfortunately we did not get to eat at the venue. On arrival we were greeted by a young waitress who explained that the kitchen didn’t open till 6 but we could have bar snacks. That sounded perfect to us as we were starving and a quick bite was all we needed and the bar snacks listed on the wall seemed pretty good. So we ordered some drinks and chose snacks. Then another waiter explained that bar snacks were not available till 6 either but he would try and fit us in for a meal although we they were fully booked. He came back 10 minutes later just to let us know that he couldn’t accommodate us as they were fully booked. Although he was very nice, it left us feeling like we were messed about twice. Make sure you book in advance to avoid such disappointment. We ended up driving to the nearest pub in the village and had a lovely meal there,

Having been told that The Beckford Arms was a great place to eat, I had high expectations. Sadly, a minimalist menu - meaning somewhat limited choice - and the kitchen running out of ham for the Ploughman's, meant that we weren't impressed with what was on offer. However, the staff were friendly and efficient, and I hope we can return to see how things will be then.

Luckily we’d booked a table on line a month ago … arrived at 6.30pm to find the car park full … obviously a popular haunt … plenty of road parking nearby fortunately. Lovely looking pub in beautiful country location. Warm and cosy interior and welcoming staff. Menu not extensive but food offering is sensible, covers the bases and is actually very well prepared and tasty. Enjoyed it very much.

Travelled some distance for a highly anticipated family birthday dinner. This place's reputation is not merited. Yes, it's a striking pub and setting with a maze of areas for drinking and dining that the young staff would do well to remember (someone to greet and direct rather than stand and stare doesn't take much). The lamb and cumin croquettes had crunch, tenderness and balance, but the grey pork chop wasn't a chop. It was dry and tasteless belly pork with unseared rind. Inedible was the feedback. The lemon tart was announced triumphantly as a posset to confusion (no explanation, posset isn't on the dessert menu and this imposter came with an £8 price tag). The anticipated Beckford affogato may exist, but the 'Classic' that arrived in lieu was sadly a minute scoop of yellow Walls style ice cream (probably for the best) with watery espresso. £5.50 of a creation it was not. The girl serving us flittered between terse and indifferent. Her perfunctory, "How is everything?" wasn't an enquiry as much as a sound to time her resumption at the bar, laughing and throwing shapes to her colleagues' amusement. Yes, pandemic retrenchment is completely expected in this trade. Yes, immature staff are unavoidable in a country pub, however, if this place continues to charge London prices for poor to average food and service then it won't survive in its current guise. This is a place to skip the food and stick to drinks.

We were pleased to return after the lockdown was eased and glad to be rewarded with the same high standards of welcome, service and food. We ate the Turkey parcel with pig in blanket, cranberry sauce (particularly good) and the mixed vegetables, all of which were cooked well, served nicely and tasty to eat. We had started with Prosecco and a Kir cocktail and drank glasses of Merlot and the Provence Rose with the meal - all delicious. We finished with coffees and a bill of £30 per head which was good value.

Beckford as welcoming and cosy as ever, with the addition of possibly the nicest hand sanitiser I’ve come across (we’re all connoisseurs now) and masks everywhere. Nevertheless, the very thorough Covid regime does not detract at all from the pub’s charms or intrude on your enjoyment. Not much else to add, apart from the rosemary chips are superb.

Highly recommend the Beckford Arms. It's a fantastic pub with excellent food and great staff who were professional, attentive and friendly. Normally vegetarian dishes (especially in pubs) are added to the menu as an afterthought, and are often bland and boring. I gave their vegetarian roast a go last weekend and it was the best meal I've ever had at a pub. Every single element of the meal was done to a high standard. We also tried their homemade lemonade which was excellent. There's plenty of free parking and excellent walks nearby if you want to work up an appetite first. You'll need to book well in advance because it gets very busy. A special shout out to James, who went above and beyond. Hope to return soon and see what it's like as a place to stay too. Thank you Beckford Arms, and please give James some well deserved praise!

Very noisy with bad mannered customers braying. Serving staff pleasant and efficient. However, Reserved a table a week in advance and found that we were placed at a table shared by two others who did nothing but use the f word throughout the meal. Food cooked satisfactorily but what could have been a pleasant experience was negated by the atmosphere. Very disappointing. Will not patronise this place again. As Tisbury and its surrounds awaken from lockdown, we were very pleased to be able to celebrate our wedding anniversary with Sunday lunch at The Beckford. Sensible spacing included a new tented area outside the conservatory and clear rules about hygeine accompanied by the same gracious welcome. The menu remained as varied and intriguing as ever and we settled for the beer brine chicken breast and the confit duck leg with spiced bread sauce. Both were served with vegetables and with brocolli and cheese sauce in addition and were beautifully cooked and delicious to eat. The service was attentive and helpful throughout. We drank prosecco as a starter and the dry and summery Tramari rose with the meal. With coffees to finish, the £38 per head was very good value.

We stopped off for a quick lunch on the way home. It's a lovely pub with a great smelling open fire. Service was very friendly and helpful. The menu offered plenty of appealing options but we both went for the burger. It was copious with good chips. There was an option of a chilli slaw which did not seem to contain any chilli but a lot of tarragon which I don't like. I mis-ordered the wine and ordered a carafe of chianti which arrived white when I wanted red. This wasn't a problem and was exchanged for a red chianti but it was rather more expensive than it tasted.I would certainly return if I was in the area.

Went here on a miserable Monday for lunch. As always it was busy, nice staff showed us to a table. We both ordered fish and chips and both arrived pretty burned and the fish inside was a bit dry. We complained and were told it was the cider batter made it dark but really it was overcooked in the deep day fryer. We then chose pudding and had sticky toffee which was ok but the inside was slightly claggy and not completely mixed. For this high end place it was a poor experience not to be repeated any time soon.

We ate lunch in a light conservatory, some tables in a rather dark pub interior. Quite a lot of game on menu, and other dishes had less usual ingredients, eg what could have been routine sea bass was enlived by a squid ink risotto and samphire. Desserts a similar wide range eg cheesecake with quince.Good choice of wine [primitivo particularly good] Not cheap but a fair price for high quality food. Pleasant, efficient service.

This pub is so good we travel 40 minutes to reach it. The combination of setting, decor, quality of the food, service and atmosphere creates a place which has "got it right". One issue which I hope would be taken on board...we have never had a problem with being served at the bar but a combination of amount of people in the pub last night (3 deep at the bar) and the issue below meant that the wait to get a drink was 12 minutes last night. We have never had this issue before. However I did notice that the bar staff gave priority to dealing with orders from the restaurant as opposed to the people waiting at the bar. This is not a complaint about the staff.. they were stretched but acted professionally and with a smile...however I think 12 minutes is excessive. We had actually come to eat so we could have asked the waitress, however.....food was superb as usual, menu creative and very reasonably priced...please do not consider putting prices up for pub classics as another pub frequented by our family has. This has stopped us going to a place we have visited for a number of years. Overall excellent!! Well done.

I live locally and have eaten here many times and food always of a high standard so I had no hesitation in booking a table here for a family lunch; The majority of us opted for a roast as it was a Sunday. The view was unanimous- it was dreadful. We were served two types of mashed vegetables, one of which was carrot - watery and tasteless. Also Kale which is an acquired taste and was over cooked. Every roast seemed to have the same gravy - thin, watery and tasteless. The roast potatoes has no colour and were very chewy on the outside and soggy in the middle. Overall a dreadful meal. As the bill was over £200 it was not cheap and will think long and hard before visiting again

Extremely disappointed with food, Sunday roast lamb shank @ £18.95 served with a small portion of green beans and two slices of carrots, a mere two halves of roast potatoes, no Yorkshire as advertised so we had to ask for them and they eventually arrived as we were just finishing meal. Our brownie dessert was meant to be warm but was served cold and hard, had to send it back, new portion came back but still not warm. For the price you would expect a decent size meal which this certainly was not. Minimal veg and not even a whole potato. Totally overpriced and meals far too small. Would not recommend.

Visited for lunch today, the room where we were was very cold with a cat/dog flap blowing in the cold air which quickly made me put my coat on. We then moved to the bar room slightly warmer but because there was a table of guests in front of the fire it certainly couldn’t be called warm and inviting. This is a pity as we have been here twice before in Summer and loved it. My husbands duck was superb my fish and chips too fussy to be a triumph. Small fish small peas not attractive looking or tasting chips. There was a green salad on the plate - not needed more peas and decent chips would have made the dish much nicer. Really disappointed as I’d really looked forward to visiting again.

A nice pub to incorporate with a walk around the nearby Fonthill Estate. The decor is in the style of a country house hotel and feels cosy and comfortable, with a roaring fire in the grand fireplace on the day we visited. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. When we first arrived, there was a slight worry as we had been seated in the living room area and there were 2 tvs on at full volume (for the rugby world cup). Just had a really lovely Sunday lunch at the Beckford Arms. Although it was really busy, they found a nice table for my husband and myself, and we were served quickly by very friendly and efficient staff. We each had a roast - my husband's beef was superb and my pork was very nice. I don't usually do desserts but the bread and butter pudding (with banana and caramel) was too tempting and absolutely worth the calories. Total bill for two mains, two puds and two pints was £50 inc service, and given the quality and size of portions, we thought that was good value. The pub is well known for being very dog friendly in all the public rooms, and it was lovely to meet so many well behaved dogs enjoying their Sunday too!

"No" I replied which then countered with, "In that case I will have to check to see if we can accommodate you" - again OK if the restaurant was full. As it turned out very few tables were taken for lunch.....

We live in the vicinity so it is not the first time that we have visited. Today's trip was part of a round trip after looking at possible wedding venues and so we were all quite peckish by the time we arrived. We hadn't booked but the staff were able to fit us in at the window seat (a favourite spot) so we were quite content.

Like its sister pub, the Talbot in Mells, this place is rightly famed for its creative and delicious food. Attentive service, and lovely little touches like a jug of iced cucumber water on the table. The prices are on the high side, but the quality merits the cost.

Being a hotel, the Beckford Arms is, according to the staff, "Open all hours". There is a delightful, cosy and comfortable, old fashioned lounge with newspapers and, in winter, an open fire. Perfect for a relaxing coffee break.

A really lovely pub. It's a pub that instantly makes me relaxed. Stylish but unpolished in that rustic, country way. We love it and will always come whenever we are within a few miles.

My wife and I came here for lunch twice within a week, including one time with our daughter and her fiancée. The food is excellent. One time we sat indoors looking out to the terrace, as we had not booked, but the second time we deliberately booked a table for the outside terrace area.

This place is the bees knees. We had a super lunch and when we were disappointed with our pannacotta (we think they forgot to put the sugar in!!) the staff could not have been more apologetic!! Fantastic - as always. Stunning location too!

We go here for family special occasions. It was my granddaughter's 18th celebration and the whole family of 10 fit in the library, which seats up to 10. It is private and you have a dedicated waitress who serves drinks and food. She was very pleasant and efficient.

I found this hotel on TA but actually booked with the hotel direct because I was travelling with my father who was bringing along his canine companion - so I needed to check if said cc would be welcome. The Beckford Arms could not have been more helpful - they have one room reserved for people who want to share with their pet - and it was conveniently located next to a door which led onto the gardens. All the family were most warmly welcomed - it is a delightful secluded place, lovely countryside, lovely walks, lovely inn/hotel. I also booked a dinner for 4 guests - ages ranged from 5-87 and the food was delicious, beautifully served by friendly staff in an airy room overlooking the garden. Book with confidence I had a wonderful stay there.

Forget everything you know about British pub food - the Beckford Arms is in a league of its own! Delicious, fresh and creative dishes can be found all over the menu and even the staples, such as fish and chips, are of the highest quality and very, very tasty. I had a scrumptious vegetarian dish (roasted courgettes), the kids had the fish and chips (that we kept on stealing because it was so good) and my hubby had the amazing salmon. The panna cotta and the berry crumble for desert were to die for and we had the cheese sampler plate which provided ample portions of the three wonderful cheeses for two. Of course, everything tasted even better with a pint of the wonderful local brew. You can either sit inside or on the lovely terrace outside overlooking the garden. Combined with an overnight stay at the Beckford Arms, this was the perfect get-away!

Fabulous place, great buzzy vibe, but I couldn't concentrate on my pizza because the view was very distracting. Pizza was delicious though, as was the view.

Wanting a light lunch we had to wait until our request for a table could be confirmed although at that early hour the restaurant was not busy. We were offered a table in the bar which was rapidly prepared for us. The service was speedy, efficient but impersonal.

When it's +20° in the garden and there's a delicious bottle of cold pale pink rose in an ice bucket in front of you and England have won 6-1 then really life doesn't get much better. Except the warm belly pork with curry matinees, smoked trout the shaved fennel and yes the fish and chips eaten with their own pickle cucumber instead of tartar sauce made the whole occasion as good if not better than anything else you would find that night in Europe. Long live the Beckford and long-live this glorious weather

As part of a large group, all the starters and mains were served on sharing platters which worked extremely well for both the diners and servers alike. Service was quietly efficient and discreet, particularly impressive as the room was so full there was minimal space to move round the table. All the dishes served were delicious and not overly complicated, just good food, well cooked. Nice wine selection. Thank you to all concerned for a most pleasant dining experience. (I'm just left with a little curiosity as to what else their menu has to offer!)

Stayed here one night and what a find! A beautiful cosy retreat in the heart of fantastic countryside. We loved the setting, the ambience and the small but very comfortable bedroom with all the nice touches. Beautifully decorated with charm and lovely thoughts like - horlicks (never been in a hotel before that’s thought of that), hair straighteners, fan, wonderful locally made products of shampoo, body wash etc

The roast was excellent although my fellow diners thought the meat tough. My only complaint was the tiny portion of cheese you got for dessert, that was not value for money!

This pub/restaurant is adjacent to the Fonthill Estate. There is a walk that starts there, 4.5 miles, they provide a map. The pub has plenty of atmosphere, dining is over 3 rooms, also outside in good weather. The staff are amazingly helpful, they really take an interest in the food they serve. And the food is excellent, all of it. The wine is a bit pricey, though the cheapest is £21; after that, we get up to £30 quite smartly. A very nice meal, the only niggle is the speed of service. We arrived at 1215, and were served our first course at 1255. It was also a bit slow the other time we were here. Still, worth the wait....

We loved this place. It has a great atmosphere with knowledgeable staff who care about their trade. The "Lovely ladies" would like to thank Sam and the rest of the team for being so friendly and welcoming looking after us on our temporary visit to the area. Food is also very good with some quality ingredients and imaginative twists. Bar snacks also a great idea. We hope to see you soon and have already got friends to book with you on our recommendation. Keep on doing what you do, oh and those choi hot nuts are to die for !

Won’t be back - coffee ok but woeful miserable staff. A smile, a bit of engagement, even eye contact makes a difference - you want to feel welcome rather than an intruder. Surely when money is tight places realise they might have to go that bit extra to encourage people to go back.

Unfortunately unable to review accomodation, food or service as we were double booked. Apparently landlords wife responsible for this so she was summoned. Landlord then completely ignored us and didnt even offer us a seat let alone an apology, this was left to his wife. She didnt seem well and was apparently in hospital at the time of our booking. She went away, 20 mins later produced £140 to cover the cost at premier inn who had ample availability and she had phoned them. Premier Inn denied any phone calls from Helen. They had one room which went whilst we were trying to book it. Plenty of certificates of awards, shame they are so old and tatty like the pub. I hate being lied to but rudeness, lies and facing a night in the car... Dont book here, disgraceful performance. Tired and niaive, should have insisted they booked it in front of us! Took the edge off Bath Christmas market tbh!
