Bear & Staff in Liverpool

Kieran is a credit, Very friendly and kind, willing to go above and beyond. other staff however are rude. Crappy food crappy atmosphere. Very over priced and worst aunt Bessie’s roast dinners in the area.

The pub was very busy, but we only waited a short time to order, receive our meals and drinks. Staff were working very hard. They were pleasant and efficient.

We booked a table for the Burns night menu. Table was booked for 730, we arrived at 725 to be told our table wasn’t quite ready and it’d be 5 minutes. We didn’t mind waiting so went the bar and bought a couple of drinks. 30 minutes later at 8pm we were shown to our table, without any apology. We were given menus and made our selection. The waiter arrived to take our order at about 810. We ordered drinks and food. We were told that the only dessert they had left was the Eton mess, again no apology just a matter of fact so you’ll have to have that. At about 830 I attempted to call the person who had seated us as we still hadn’t received our drinks order, which was only a bottle of wine, a bottle of water and a beer. She acknowledged me and shouted “2 minutes”. At about 845 we gave up and left. As we were leaving we didn’t see anyone to tell that we’d given up waiting. The bar area was empty so I’m not sure why we’d waited about half an hour for our drinks. If we’d at least been served some drinks we may have not noticed the delay with the food. 1 hour and 15 minutes from the time of our booking and we hadn’t even been served a drink just isn’t acceptable. Before we left we called another restaurant in Woolton Village and we walked there and managed to rescue our evening, albeit not the traditional Burns night meal we’d planned. When we arrived at the other restaurant the Bear and Staff called me, but I missed the call, that was at 21:02, which is when I assume they noticed we’d gone. The service was just awful, surly, rude and dismissive. There was a table of about 6 people near us. They were eating when we arrived, not sure if it was starters or mains. When they finished a waiter came and removed to plates from their table and then never returned to clear the rest of their table. They were complaining amongst themselves. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place at all costs.

Went with my family of 6 people for the burns night set menu Pre booked a table about a week prior for 6pm. Got there slightly earlier, shown to the table, ordered drinks: pint of Guinness, pint of madri, pint of shandy, glass of coke and bottle of water. Spent about 20 mins before came and took our order to be told no haggis and no discount even though it's the integral part of the burns night meal. Said we'd order off normal menu to be told no squid for starters and no burgers as no buns. When asked what they actually do have was told " not a lot really " when we discussing amongst ourselves about leaving food waitress said " yes I probably would, I don't blame you " Went up to settle bar bill which was 28.60 for 3 pints a coke and water. Absolute shambles

Came in yesterday for my son's birthday and the staff could not do more for us from the second we arrived, food turned up at the table within 10 minutes of ordering and was piping hot. Portions reasonable and prices matched the quality. 👍🏼

Good food, service and a good choice of quality drinks.

Staff lovely especially the man behind the bar. Food was amazing, portions were great, piping hot and tasted great. Used a voucher and no issues with this. Warm cozy feeling inside, all clean and dog friendly

Visited for Sunday dinner and was not disappointed. The staff are very friendly and helpful but not over bearing. The food was quality and cooked to perfection. Starters mains and desserts. I had the trio of roasts and I must say the turkey was sublime. Honestly one of the best roast dinners I've had in a long time! More expensive compared to your standard pub food but this isn't standard. You certainly get what you pay for. Will visit again :) highly recommended

My husband and I went there for my birthday, we had a lovely meal and the food was piping hot which is good. The waitress was very attentive and friendly.. I love this pub we have been going there for a very long time, we have had a not so good experience a couple of times which was disappointing but it hasn’t put me off going.

Lovely experience couldn’t fault we had fish and chips and mushy peas wow what can I say amazing, log fire in restaurant lovely and cosy staff couldn’t do enough would highly recommend

Warm and welcoming as usual , we had a bottle of rose wine and a few beers amongst our party , we ordered a few side dishes that were lovely . Only stayed for a couple of hours but enjoyed the experience .

The manager was rude and obnoxious to both customers and staff. The food was poor and overpriced and the whole experience was saved only by the courteous way we were looked after by the young man who took over after the manager went home. Last time we visit.

Outstanding atmosphere, food and service

I would off rated this 0 if I could. Went for a family meal who came all the way from London. Arrived there at 6:15 and 7:15 we received our meal. Thinking this is going to be gorgeous because of the wait, well the burger was rock hard and cold chips . The pork was pink and hardly no meat just uncooked fat and mash was over microwaved and the green cabbage I wouldn’t give to my rabbit !!!

Superb Christmas day lunch. We have come here on Christmas day for the last six years and always been impressed but this one has to be the best . Pub was beautifully decorated and was lovely and warm . Christmas day can be quite challenging for restauranteurs because people have paid a lot of money for their meals and expectations from customers are very high. It can be a challenge to manage a very busy bar combined with a restaurant full of diners. The Bear and Staff delivered in all aspects. The food was outstanding, we were in a party of six and we all received our food at the same time. It was presented well and piping hot. There is nothing worse than being rushed through your food or similarly having to wait hours between courses. The Bear got it just right yesterday. The highlights were the prawn and salmon starter and the turkey main course. There was plenty to eat without being over facing! Fish starter was cooked to perfection and the turkey was superb. Vegetables cooked to perfection and plenty of gravy. Service was exceptional in the restaurant and behind the bar, nothing was too much trouble. Thank you to all the team for making it a very special day.

We had an amazing experience! I had the fish and chips, along with a Bakewell tart for dessert. The staff have you time to enjoy your meal and company, not hovering over you like they do in the United States. This was very refreshing and appreciated. When we come back to Liverpool, we will stop back in!

I have visited this pub many times and although it is a great place for a drink and the bar staff are excellent, the food is terrible. It is pricey considering the small portions and quality of food. There are some decent Greene King pubs in Liverpool with a good food offering but this is not one of them. Such a shame as it has great potential.

Cold food, lack of interest by staff and poor value for money.There were a catalogue of disasters.Firstly no hot water for tea or coffee, next our peas were cold ( asked for them to be microwaved).The waitress Lucy was too busy talking asked again after we half finished out food, eventually the hot peas were brought out.The scampi and chips were all frozen not fresh chips.Service was poor lack of interest in customer service.Paid in cash and was short changed without an explanation.Very disappointing lunch today.

Been going every Christmas Eve for past few years. Food has gone down hill a lot lately but being local decided to stick with tradition and booked back in October for our usual Xmas eve slot. Got a call yesterday (7th December) saying they were cancelling as they’ve got no room and there’s only now one dog friendly table in the whole pub. Quite snotty and rude and dismissive of the fact I actually booked the table in person! Won’t be going again and no lots of people who have said the same. What a shame it used to be a good local pub.

Nice pub serving a good selection of beers and wines. Not eaten here for a while but was OK last time. Not as cheap as other pubs in the area. Needs a bit of tlc to deal with a damp issue in some areas

Not very good I was cold asked for heating to be put on three times still not on when we left if never been so cold service not to good not once did any one come to ask if we needed any think food not very hot on it it was my friends birthday I would have left

We booked a table for 7. The portions, were tiny, more like child portions that adults. We ended up going to McDonald's afterwards, as the kids were still hungry. I asked for new potatoes with my fish instead of chips, I had about 2 little new potatoes, chopped into pieces, old fried and reheated, with my fish, which wasn't fresh, but reheated again. My husband had grilled basa, half a piece. Prices do not warrant the children's portions they are serving, only thing that was fresh, was the 3 steaks my children had, hardly any chips. We won't ho again, because of this, So BYE BYE, Bear and Staff. Staff were very nice.

Absolutely pathetic. Took our orders and came back saying they didn't have half the starters. Changed our order, only for them to come back saying they didn't have our mains. Changed our order only to be told that they only had so many of one main, so we had to change again. This was after waiting nearly half an hour to actually take our order. When the food came, the meats were fine, but my God, the four pathetic roasties, the Yorkshire pudding was as flat as a witches tit and it looked like they only had shredded white cabbage left as everyone had it, only it had been flattened to take up more room on the plate. We most certainly will not be going again.

Lovely staff moved us when asked no problem and although they were rushed off their feet they remained composed and happy to serve. Would return.

Lovely meal yesterday with my partner. Quick, but not rushed service, and the food was lovely. We were only planning a light meal, but ended up staying for the full 3 courses as we were enjoying the atmosphere and ended up having a nice Friday evening relax.

Visited on Thursday with my partner and had a lovely time well looked after by Kieran, and the food was great too. Thank you, we'll be back soon.

Food was pleasant enough but our waiter, Daniel was a star. He was attentive without being too invasive. I was out with a group of girls and Daniel went along with the ribbing we gave him. He is a credit to The Bear and such a great lad.

Absolutely bang average food at best. Luke warm, dry. Over the years it’s always been hit and miss, but certainly the last time we will be visiting.

Disappointing. Visited on 16th October table for 4 to celebrate my son's 8th birthday. Arrived at 6.15pm and did not receive our main meals until 7.50pm. When the food did arrive, one dish (duck pie) was ice cold, which we sent back. I didn't want a replacement meal or the wait to go with it, so we asked for it to be taken off the bill which the staff did. The sides on the children's meals were wrong, but they didn't care at that point. It wasn particularly busy, so maybe they just forgot about us, or we were unlucky. Had high hopes after seeing so many positive reviews, but after this experience, we probably won't return.

Recently dined here for a roast dinner with my partner Jim. Upon arrival we were greeted by a young man named louix. Long story short he was the shining light of the place. The food was below par and rest of the staff seemed cold however that was not the case for louix. Would come back again not to eat or anything but just to see his smile again. Over and out.

Super cosy inside in the winter and great garden in the summer. Dog friendly and food is gorgeous. I love a Sunday afternoon having a roast and a few bitters. great choice of bitters and beers.

Quiet lunchtime drink and sandwich

Came in for lunch today (01/10/24) staff were absolutely fantastic 3 lovely girls. will definitely be coming back for more of the duo of chicken 10/10

Appalling. A ‘20 min wait on food’ turned into two hours. Our meal given to another table:mistakes happen, but despite us asking for the meal that had been on the other customers’ table for ten mins not be reheated and given to us-it was. Some of the plate was heated to oblivion and some stone cold. Sent back again. Brought back out but the ‘Pork loin and crackling’ had no crackling. When we asked for it we were brought a tiny ramekin of cold pork scratchings that were laughable - see pic. The acting manager could sense dissatisfaction amongst a few customers and left the premises before we finished our meal (didn’t want to face the music) We were left with the only two members of staff that had been left to front the whole shambolic service. They could only agree with us and wipe our bill which was absolutely the right thing to do and the only reason to award any stars to this review.

Just back from what was supposed to be a pleasant family Sunday lunch and feel the need to write this while fresh in the mind. The whole experience was a ‘comedy of errors’ from start to finish and after one and a half hours waiting for our food, what turned up was a joke. The menu (wording and descriptions) and prices are a far cry from what you actually get. Best example of this is the ‘Pork and Crackling’ dinner. There is no crackling and if you ask for it you’ll receive a ramekin with what was clearly some cold pork scratchings from the bags behind the bar😂. I’ve a list of stuff I could use to support my ratings here but am holding back as the staff realised how poor everything was and dealt with our bill accordingly.

Love this place! It's become the unofficial '19th hole' with it being just round the corner from my golf club. Pies, burgers, fish, beers, good wine - I'd recommend to anyone.

The waitress that took our order seemed to be very annoyed that there are customers on a Monday evening. The Madri beer was nice. Nothing else. The food was totally different from what was described on the menus. Signature beef burger was nothing but a smelly burger with soggy chips. Never again

If I could give this meal no stars I would .We only had 2 mains of the fish & chips barely tasteless Handful of chips ,food not very hot both of us came away starving never visit this place again total rip off 2 mains,2 coffees bill came to £40 daylight robbery !!!

Disaster from start to finish. Seems understaffed - ironic considering the name. After waiting more than 20 minutes to order drinks, we were told there'd be at least an hour wait for food (the pub wasn't busy and it was an afternoon during the week). Beer selection was poor, and the only cider they had was Aspall. First, they gave me the wrong drink (Amstel) and then tried to give me what I asked for in the same glass (I ordered cider as I can't drink beer). Then we were told the Aspall was off. Safe to say we left soon after.

The place is OK, the food is not my cup of tea.

Steak pie mash and veg was delicious. We got something that was like a bruscetta for starters (can't remember what it was called), that was also gorgeous. Service was good and sp was the atmosphere. Got an old school feel to the place. Proce is reasonable. Not cheap but not expensive. We eat there fairly often

Came for Sunday lunch 3 had turkey roast 1had beef .one came without roast potato's,one came with missing carrots.The Yorkshire pudding had a soggy bottom no pigs in blanket but a large sausage with bacon wrap not very appetising.All meals not very hot but the waitress brought hot jug of gravy.Good sweets and had 2 pots of tea one pot didn’t have a tea bag it was just a pot of water .Table not cleared, over all it was poor.Staff did their best but maybe don’t do to many covers .

Visited here in September 2024 and the food was absolutely gorgeous and extremely well presented! The customer service was exceptional, especially that from Meletta who was always on hand to provide service and build a rapport with us. She brought a smile and personality to her job and made our night even better. The food and service were so good that we returned the night after our visit! Would 110% recommend and will return very very soon! :)

Went for Sunday lunch with my wife, sister in law and brother in law and we were very disappointed with both the food and the service. The food was luke warm and, on one plate they had forgotten to include roast potatoes, and on another there were no carrots. After the meal we ordered tea they had forgotten to put a tea bag in so served just a pot of hot water. The staff were very nice but the overall service was poor. We've been to the Bear & Staff during mid-week and enjoyed the food but yesterday's experience was terrible.

Roast dinner, apparently. Have to pay for extra potatoes. Food like rubber and luke warm. Should have known after the first visit when they were blasting scouse rap from the kitchen. Never again.

It was a surprise for my daughter's birthday (60) if you must know😊. I went early and spoke with Meleela about it and she could not have been more helpful. They are are really nice approachable pair, her and her husband. On the night, the food was excellent. I recommend the squid starter (memories of Spain). The service provided by the staff was very very good. Meleela is superb at making you feel welcome and nothing is a bother. Highly recommended. We all agreed.

Great pub, warm very welcoming. Staff are amazing. Very professional yet very approachable charming and full of smiles. Our group were looked after by a lady called Meletta who I have to say is an absolute star and a credit to your organisation. Already planning our next meal. Food is excellent and very reasonable. Get yourselves in there and try it, you won't regret it.

Brilliant pub , fabulouse food greatlittle beer garden secluded and very tidy n clean , meletta who has gotta be a nanager or owner does absolutely everything effortlessly ,(and with quite busy customers ) was amazing , great food n service 5 stars 🌟

Our experience at the Bear&Staff restaurant in liverpool Woolton area this evening is by far our worst eating experience we have in a long time It’s a friday night we booked for 6:45pm because the online booking system said 6:30 was booked! 3 of our drinks were not available choices from the bar our choice of food was sold out three of our four friends choices not available Mixed grill and Rump steak our second or really third choice ordering was not ready 45 minutes later! We frequently complained to manager and server with poor responses and sarcastic responses this restaurant needs new management and quickly

Delicious food, beer and drinks. Friendly and attentive staff, fast service and very nice place! Absolutely coming back!

Finally, a pub serving a proper steak and ale pie, not a stew in a pot with a lid, not a slice of pie, but a real, individual pie! Extra gravy too. Very nice!

Started off really well, nice surroundings, nice table, friendly and attentive waiter. Had pot of tea each. Ordered 2 roast dinners, pork and turkey. Looked lovely. Large plate. Pork was nice, crackling like a rock, couldn't cut it, vegetables raw, Yorkshire so crisp couldn't cut it. All in all, think it had been warmed up as was stale. We told waitress, who just said sorry about that. Shame because we got the mini sweet and coffee which was great. All in all, we wouldn't visit again.

Had pre birthday meal with the family last night 24/08 24, food was excellent, also the service from start to finish, also a free bottle of wine as a birthday treat, would highly recommend a visit , thank you

This was a lovely pub with a great atmosphere and lucy one of the workers was great and helpful towards me when I visited and greeted me with a warm welcome.

We waited around 1 hour and 15 mins for our food to then be told it was going to be another 20 mins . By this time i had slurped around 6 pints of madri and was on my arse . Food isnt great either way . Madri is fantastic tho

Me and my boyfriend visited this place last week. We had some food and drinks and I could not fault anything! The staff was lovely and the food was phenomenal along with the drinks. Will definitely be returning.
