Good brunch selection with good atmosphere. Only criticism would be portion sizes and too many hash browns (4) and sour dough at the expense of the other ingredients.

Had a lovely lunch here with my boyfriend yesterday. Sat on one of the 4 tables outside in the sunshine and both had the Lebanese flatbreads and Mango/passionfruit smoothies. Quite pricey at £19 each for lunch but the food and smoothie were both delicious and I'd definitely recommend. Thanks Bear!

Looking for somewhere in Derby for an early breakfast & struggled. We then saw Bear on Irongate which looked inviting-opened at 8am. Popped our heads in to ask & Ollie could not have been more pleasant & helpful- the reason we decided to try Bear. After looking at a good choice of options I decided on poached eggs on sourdough toast - 2 lovely deep yellow yolk eggs perfectly cooked on a large slice of sourdough toast & a delicious herb butter for £6.90. Beautifully presented & absolutely filling. Add to that a great quality filter coffee (not the weak nasty stuff some places serve) for £2.90 with unlimited free refills until 10.30am. A really lovely surprise & a gem of a find. Would definitely recommend ( I had a peak at the lunch menu which also looks good). Will go back & on Ollies recommendation try the venue in Ashbourne- handy for anyone going out walking or vising the Peak District.

Visited with friends for a meal in the evening. The area itself is nice and relaxed, and has a nice vibe for an evening meal. The service for drinks is very slow, considering it wasn’t too busy you would have expected to get them sooner but they took quite a while. My friend asked for mocktails but they didn’t have any which was a shame however they did accommodate her by making something for her, but maybe a suggestion going forward that mocktails are added to the menu? The drinks can be quite expensive also. The food was lovely, really nice, but my burger was £19, which is extremely steep. It’s insanely overpriced. I wouldn’t pay that again. The staff were friendly and nice, just very expensive and left feeling a bit underwhelmed.

Came here on the 12/3/2022 for lunch with a friend. I ordered eggs benedict which was £8.50 and added on smoked salmon for £4. I was very disappointed. Thin slice of bread which was burnt. The portion of salmon was pathetic. I paid £12.50 for the smallest eggs benedict I've ever had and its the most expensive. Everything else was good.

Over the past two days we have visited here twice for food & drinks. On Friday we visited for there signature pancakes, have fruit x10 stack & bacon with maple syrup x10 stack. There was that much we had to take some home. The only criticism I would say is that unfortunately they were out of packet, & not cooked from scratch. On Saturday evening we visited again, but this time as a table of 7, for my birthday. This time round I went for the La Fondue Burger with standard House Seasoned Fries. Presentation & taste was spot on, however the burger was over cooked for my liking. All other guests gave good feedback. On a different note, the cocktail menu has good selection to chose from, my personal favourite being the espresso martini.

On the surface this place looks like one of many hipster cafes but the atmosphere and service begs to differ. The staff were warm and welcoming, very happy to help and seemingly kind natured. The atmosphere is perfectly pieced together with great decor and music to match, not to mention the furniture offering a touch of minimalism. The food was outstanding the flavours literally jumped off the plate and danced around the palate. One of the best Shakshukas to date - compliments to the chef. The coffee is also of very high standard will definitely be returning soon.

Came here for a drink with my child however upon arrival I was disappointed to find that there were no 'bears' to be seen. When peeping through the window it seems very much like a 'cave.'When taking a seat, I felt humiliated as the wonky 'bar stool' legs caused me to topple over onto the floor. (Would book a table if you are old or small to prevent this!)As well as this, the berry smoothie, which tasted amazing, was not specified to have bits on the menu, (yet another misleading message from the cafe). As quality of food is high, would recommend to any financially thriving person- as prices are rather high!

We visited Bear off the cuff after being let down by another pub that we had pre booked for dinner and drinks for my friends Birthday. The staff were amazing and accommodated our party in the space of 10-15 minutes. Despite issues with certain food and drink not being in stock (due to being so busy) the staff were amazing and bent over backwards to ensure we had a great time (which we did). The food was lovely and we all had a fantastic night! We will definitely be back, just get some Pizza and Rose wine in! :)

Close to Jury's Inn and necessary to leave hotel if you want a cooked breakfast. The Bear fits the bill well and a nice location near the Cathedral. Grandson Stanley had a bacon cobb with a fried egg on the side and loved it. Fiona also liked her pancaskes with maple syrup while I ordered the full english. This was also nice with a couple of exceptions - the miso roasted mushrooms were not roasted and there was no flavour of miso and the little pot of tomato and beans was strange. Otherwise friendly service and nice surroundings.

A welcome return to this visually appealing cafe with polite, attentive staff and a table by the window which was ideal for people watching. Our long black and oat flat white coffees were excellent. Very few cafes have a long black on their menu and we were impressed that there was no extra charge for any of the four plant 'milks' available. There are some appetising vegan savoury items in all the sections but we could not resist the dark cherry and marzipan cake, the blueberry Bakewell slice and the chocolate & banana loaf, which were all delicious.

Looks the part inside so was hoping for a decent breakfast. Food arrived within a reasonable time but both the bacon and sausages appeared to be pre cooked so dry and not tasty. The rest of the food was luke warm to cold depending on which item, again this would inficate that the food was not freshly cooked, we did mention this to the staff and they kindly offered to replace our food which we declined and accepted a free coffee. But unfortunately on this occasion an average meal, looks cool but so was the food.

This is a dark, noisy restaurant with the bar in the middle. We were seated with a clear view of the kitchen hatch. The hygiene left a lot to be improved. I saw bare handed chefs handling salad, then wiping hands down aprons, the barmaid opening a bottle of wine, sniff it then pour into a glass for my husband. Cutlery was not wrapped in napkins as is usual in Covid times, salt and pepper were in grinders, and therefore handled by many. The waffle was leathery and my salad lacked carbohydrate that was not offered.

Seems to be a few hit & miss reviews - it looks really good outside and in but I think it might be style over substance. Ordered flat white and mocha plus the maple bacon pancakes. Honestly, I didn’t like the app ordering experience (maybe an age thing) I certainly didn’t find it easier. Coffees arrived, had to ask for sugar - tasted ok but nothing special, had better coffee in the museum of making earlier that same day tbh. Took ages for food to arrive, coffee was long finished by then. Pancakes were big disappointment, expensive and underwhelming. There seemed to be lots of staff, not sure why when you have to order via app. Maybe get more cooking in the kitchen? Sorry guys, not impressed.

Ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was burnt and the waffle was hard in the middle. They did try to rectify this at the time but it shouldn’t have come out like that I’m the first place. Coffee came cold after I specifically requested it to be extra hot. The only thing that was okay were the waffles. I appreciate them allowing dogs into the restaurant however o think as a courtesy they should ask if people are okay with dogs being at the table next to them. Some one might have allergies!

I visited with a friend, approx. 2 weeks ago. We have been regulars at Bear for at least 2 years. We had to use a table outside as per COVID restrictions. To order, we had to enter the bar foyer and scan the QR code. I have an older android 'phone that wouldn't allow a QR reading app. My friends apple 'phone died due to a low battery. He tried to explain to the 2 Bear staff, who were only accepting online orders, to no avail. A nearby, female Bear customer/ Good Samaritan, explained to us that she too had the same difficulty a few days previously. A Good Samaritan noticed her plight & bought her coffee, now, she did the same for us! The attitude of the staff was awkward and very unhelpful. I have decided not to bother being their customer again. I have met there previousl, having eaten and drank coffee and tea. But this episode has spoiled my previous praise of the Bear cafe and eaterie.

Went 2 days before lockdown and a male member of staff who was serving on the night was awful with his attitude. Tables seemed to be left for long periods of time with no service, or no care of if the food was okay, for more drinks etc. I am normally not one to write a review but I feel as though this was particularly bad compared with previous experiences in BEAR. The whole evening we were asked once if we wanted another drink over the course of around 2-3 hours and we noticed a few tables becoming aggitated waiting for the bill, drinks, food etc. Overall the food was nice but it came out near cold and the service was awful.

My only complaint against Bear cafe in Derby is the lack of proper table service. In these covid19 days, customers do not want to queue up behind total strangers and have to select and pay for their meals at a counter...take a tip from our continental cousins...get from behind the counter, chat with customers at the table and take their order... simple really and much safer.Menu limited, only three choices of lunch, but was good. Lovely Brunch food for 3 and another group of friends. Drinks were good too. Eat out to help out taking place which helped make the experience more financially viable otherwise would have been an expensive meal out. Service was good, however they literally had 1 girl doing all till orders, table service and dish clearing while 1 guy did all drinks. Until another me never of staff joined at about 10.30, tables were left with dirty dishes for quite a while as the poor girl was stretched too far. Disappointed with the ‘sweets treats’ that were advertised to come with home made honey comb. Neither of them did, glad I only paid half price for it! The brownie and ice cream was more ice cream than brownie (again, expensive for what it was) and came with cream which I didn’t want but wasn’t on the menu! A few careful tweaks and more attention to detail, better staffing and this place could be a lovely place to visit often.

FREE PARKING When you treat YOURSELF to coffee and brunch. Very misleading offer that they have running at this cafe, offer is to refund the Intu car parking charge when you buy a coffee and brunch for YOURSELF (as per the poster). Now read the small print at the bottom of the poster, to get your parking back you must spend a minimum of £25. Their most expensive coffee is about £3.50 and most expensive brunch meal is £10, so to spend £25 is pretty impossible unless of course you come as a couple or group. But the poster is advertising to “treat yourself”, so they aiming this offer at single customers, which is impossible to achieve unless you drink 3 coffees and have a couple of meals!Very misleading, and could be classed as false advertising if someone from trading standards saw it.Anyway as for the food and drink, it’s not bad, but not great. Coffee was a little sour tasting for me, but that’s personal, and the sausage burger was okay but the bread was dry. Don’t think we will be returning as we don’t like dishonest misleading offers.

Uttoxeter, my local BEAR store, sets the bar high. Intu Derby exceeds expectation. As for Irongate? A league of its own. I visited last weekend, and the standard BEAR seem to uphold throughout their stores was truly embodied by this store, and its staff.. a personal, yet simultaneously professional service, tailored to the individual yet suited to the many. I enjoyed a flatbread, and an Aeropress of the Kenyan coffee, the former a prodigiously seasoned dish, the latter a vessel of pure joy. Thus far, BEAR has set an unparalleled standard of quality and service. A special thanks to the Store Manager, Ash, who visited our table and made us feel distinctly welcome. We went to Bear for Sunday brunch. It wasn't too busy but the vibe was lovely. The staff were friendly and the Christmas tree was cool.

We were not aware of the new venue in fact we visited on the opening day. Were welcomed at the door and found a suitable table. Decor was good as expected and tables very well laid out the menu was really interesting. My wife had a Raspberry Lemonade Mocktail and I had a glass of Organic Pinot Grigio both very good. For mains my Wife had had Watermelon and Feta Salad, I had Chicken Shwarma Flatbread both mains were unusual, excellently priced and satisfying. Would recommend this place to everyone and we certainly intend to visit again soon.

We visited here because of the variety of choice and because some of our friends are vegetarian and vegan.

My sister, 14-month old and I went to BEAR for the first time and walked out very disappointed. Expensive and over-rated, looks the part but all superficial.

Great friendly service, and food of slightly below average. Portions are small and makes this expensive. I won’t be going back as many other places to visit

I visited BEAR-Derby on Saturday October 12th 2019 about 9am. First time I’ve visited, had the BEAR Breakfast from the menu...Large Soda bread with a large Portabello Mushroom, two Tomato’s, large piece of Bacon, Sausage, and topped with a Fried Egg! Absolutely delicious, would recommend to all! Washed down with a nice strong White Coffee! Service was superb, Thanks for a great breakfast!

Myself and partner visited today for a late brunch but found ourselves disappointed. It all looks very nice but it doesn’t deliver on flavour. Décor and overall ambience really laid back and chill. We both went for the avocado toast and unfortunately found it cold and flavourless, struggling to finish it just because it had cost so much. Coffee was good and service friendly hence not a lower score. I wouldn’t return.

Have visited here for breakfast a couple of time now and then been for lunch this week while I am working in derby for a short time. I have enjoyed the breakfast on both occasions. I have had the pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, delicious. Everyone else’s breakfast has looked nice as well. Tea is lovely, served in a proper decanter and loose leaves rather than teabags, you can certainly it taste the difference. Also had a nice lunch here this week. I had the chicken schnitzel, with fresh slaw, crispy noodles and spicy sauce which I really enjoyed. Really like this place, it’s busy and has a nice atmosphere

I came here with my two friends and ordered an ice latte, mojito and a milkshake. The latte was brought over promptly, however the other drinks didn’t turn up after twenty minutes. After deciding they weren’t coming, I went to the bar where I found my milkshake sat where it had been for 10 minutes and a unstarted mojito on the counter. I advised the lady our drinks hadn’t arrived to which she had to ask me what I ordered as the ticket wasn’t there for them. They issued a full refund after my complaint and extra iced latter for the one that was drank during the wait but still, I had heard good things about here and I cannot agree unfortunately

We ordered coffee and croissants. The croissants arrived but no sign of the coffee despite other customers who came in after us getting theirs. We asked and were told ours must have been given to someone else. Still no coffee appeared. We asked yet again and were met with indifference from the man behind the counter. The coffee eventually arrived - it was barely warm and had clearly been slopping around in the mug.

Had a great time celebrating my birthday at Bear. A group of us went and had bottomless brunch, and it was definitely bottomless! Helpful staff came to top up regularly, or it only took a minute if not to get someone over with a fresh bottle. 90 minutes was more than enough time to get our full. The food was fab too and we all had empty plates.

Without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite coffee shop in Derby with outstanding food and drink. However in my recent visits, my views have been tainted by one of the waitresses, having my coffee slammed down infront of me and her attitude in general is poor, which lets down the rest of the team.

have gone here a couple of times and the menu is interesting, always very busy in there, i'd say if you are going for dinner book a table otherwise you end up on the very slippy high stools which aren't very comfy to sit on. Portion sizes not massive but food quality good, saw a buffet food thing they were doing at another time for a party and that looked excellent.

Visited as a group of four friends yesterday for the bottomless prosecco brunch having never been before. The staff were very attentive, the food was lovely (eggs Benedict was spot on!) and they kept the drinks flowing without us having to ask so I can't fault it. We loved the relaxed atmosphere and although we'd booked for 11.30 we arrived early and our table was ready so we were able to enjoy a cocktail first and start our bottomless brunch when we were ready. Overall we had a lovely

Me and my Husband have visited Bear a few times, and have really enjoyed it - it’s a bit quieter and has a more relaxed vibe than than places like Costa, which we love! We’ve had breakfast here whenever we’ve been in and the food has always been faultless - the eggs benedict and pancakes are a firm favourite with us! My husband really rates the coffee, but I love the peach iced tea on offer there.

Visited last night on a whim and had a bit of a wait because the place was full. Once seated the staff were very attentive ensuring our drinks came quickly and clearing our plates. Each time with a smile and checking we were happy. There was a huge choice of dishes and they were kept well stocked. There's nothing worse than wanting a particular dish for it to have run out and not restocked and that didn't happen. There is no shortage of what I would call the premium dishes, such as lamb and king prawns and everything was high quality. We have visited several times and despite eating many dishes, I still haven't managed to try half of them. Place seems very well run with plenty of staff all working hard.

Good music and good value drinks. Have not been for a very long time and it has changed since I last went (no longer serves food and more open plan than it was). Won't leave it as long until I next go,

It was in 1979 as a 18yr old I and the youth of the day use to call into this wonderful propper café. The days of Anti pasti the punk band of derby who use to hang out on old derby Market place along with all the other people who use to call and eat or just drink the really good coffee and tea that use to be served here . I became homeless at around 20 yrs of age and every Thursday for reasons I'm still not sure of I use to always call into the Acropolis for either breakfast or a really hearty afternoon meal . It is such a shame to hear that the place has closed down. Another sad blow to derby I am sad to say . I can honestly say that the my memories of the place and the staff who worked there is one of gratefulness. The place literally kept me alive at a very dark period of my life . The food was brilliant and plentiful. Not sure if anyone who owned the place back then or who worked there back in the late 70s will read this but the Acropolis cafe saved my life . Sounds a bit odd I know but trust me to be able to have a lovely hot meal at affordable prices and a hot drink saved my life . Thank you all at Acropolis. That café has always always and will always hold a special place in my Heart 💙 . Such a loss . Thank you Barry . Xx

Surprised there aren't more reviews for this 'proper' cafe. Lots of simple, but filling choices - the usuals on toast, chip cobs, sandwiches, full meals etc - for excellent value prices. Fed 2 hungry kids and myself with drinks with change from £10 - try and do that elsewhere! Service was efficient, food arrived quickly. It tasted great and with good portion sizes. Just what was required!
