Had the fish of the day...locally caught plaice simply but brilliantly cooked in butter, olive oil, lemon juice and white wine with capers. Best fish dish ever. Staff were wonderfully friendly. A great experience all round.

The building & location are lovely but they are the only things keeping this place going. Service was poor, no smiles and a negative attitude, unwilling to seat us inside as lunch bookings were due in 40 minutes, rather than offer the option of not staying too long we were made to feel unwelcome. Instead we opted for cakes outside which were terrible, a strange consistency and pretty flavourless. On the plus side, coffee was nice and tunes were funky.

We recently visited the Beach House for a family lunch, bringing a group of 15 people (8 adults, 7 kids). The adults ordered starters and mains, the kids had mains, and we enjoyed wine and cocktails. The final bill was £658. However, the experience was ruined by the restaurant's inflexibility. My daughter is a vegetarian, and unfortunately, there was nothing on the menu that catered to her dietary needs. We knew this would be an issue so we brought a sandwich and some fruit for her, since she had no other option. But the waitress informed us that outside food was not allowed, without any understanding of our situation. As a result, my wife and daughter had to leave the restaurant to eat their meal in the car, while the rest of the family stayed inside to eat. It felt incredibly unfair and left a very sour note on what should have been a pleasant family meal. For what we were spending, I would expect more accommodation for dietary restrictions or, at the very least, some understanding and flexibility in such situations. We were paying customers, and my daughter simply couldn't eat what was on the menu. The lack of compassion from the staff was disappointing, and it's unlikely we'll be returning.

Utterly terrible. £20+ for a small glass of wine and a 330ml can of beer. I asked for a taste of the beer having seen the price only to be sniffily told it only comes in a can. My partner asked for a large glass of wine and was served a small glass, again being told they only offer one size. The place seemed to be run by young people with little or no customer service skills. Shame as we would have certainly frequented it during our stay but once bitten and all that.

WARNING PLEASE READ. After what was a lovely day out to one of our local beaches we decided to have a spot of lunch, we ordered 3 x Fish clubs and chips, 2 x Fish Goujons and chips, 4 x cans of coke and a bottle of water, now sit down if your reading this !! £139.50 later and after nearly requiring a defibrillator I tried to make sense of it all. 1st point - It’s a beach hut cafe nothing more 2nd point - The menu is displayed on a black board at the front, NO PRICES DISPLAYED, because it’s a Beach hut cafe you would expect the prices to be reasonable. 3rd point - They add on a service charge without telling you or giving you the option to decline. Now I believe in value for money and have no problem what so ever in paying a little extra for quality, THIS WAS NOT £139.50 worth of food or service. Please avoid at all cost or if you’re really hungry apply for a bank loan or remortgage your house prior to your visit. Places like this should not be allowed to operate

Such a shame to post this review as the Beachhouse is the most beautiful venue and does a great coffee! We’ve been coming here for the past 3 years and unfortunately the service never quite feels like you are welcome. We arrived on Sunday and as we went to order hash browns we were told there were none - the delivery had not arrived. Ok, no problem. Fast forward to our breakfast arriving with a hash brown on the plate and we were confused. We asked staff - oh, we had the last one apparently. Yet the chef stood behind the server was stood holding 2. Why the weird hash brown cover up? We asked to order some for our fussy 3 year old - no, we have ran out. Then the table next to us get their breakfast - with hash brown. A simple “we don’t have enough hash browns to serve them as extra add ons today” would have been perfectly adequate to us as customers. But they repeatedly lied to us and said they had none at all. One thing I hate is being lied to. We also asked to have our coffee in take out cups so our kids wouldn’t knock them over - no, the owners don’t like it when people who eat in have take away cups. A disappointing visit and means we won’t be returning.

Food was casual, easy, uncomplicated, and delicious, but.... expensive!! And basically no vegetarian option - one of our children had bread for dinner so a bit annoying when you are forking out £160 for 5 of us to eat out. That included added service charge on the bill although service was nothing exceptional to be fair - good, and friendly etc - but that should be just a norm. Evening dinner 1900-2130 sunset. After deciding to leave the car behind & try to avoid walking the single-track road, we arrived rather bedraggled from tackling overgrown hedgerows! The intention was to swim first and dine after, however, due to being short-staffed, they were unsure how much longer they would be able to keep serving - well done that waitress who did stay on, worth the 12.5% service charge! Good choice of refreshments for everyone and the food was exceptional! Salt and pepper squid and sizzling whole prawns - gorgeous! Although you’ll need to visit the public convenience nearby to wash your hands after peeling the prawns! 😅 Fresh crab salad, crab linguini, fish goujons and a portion of moules with some rosemary fries on the side - everything delicious! With good company, decent wine, the setting sun. & youngsters providing entertainment by jumping off the famous Thurlstone sea-stack arch it became the perfect evening. Some of us ventured in for a dip afterwards, while others enjoyed the setting sun. We opted to walk the road on the return, which thankfully wasn’t too busy!

Staff very unfriendly and particularly the member of staff telling my partner he could sit where he was as it was table service only and we were having table service. We had the drinks which were mediocre and I have had lot nicer Sauvignon elsewhere. Astounded that our bill was £16 a £5 for the very small can of pilsner and an astonishing £11 for a 125ml of wine. I was speechless what an absolute disgrace that they are allowed to get away with charging so much. And it definitely wasn’t service with a smile. Not impressed whatsoever will not be visiting again.

Sat with a few friends, we all ate , drank, spent a fair bit of money. Staff were ok on this occasion, food was alright but expentantly extortionate. Asked a staff member for a sausage roll which were all proudly displayed by the front door, "They're for takeaway I'm afraid" I was told. I replied "yeh no problem I'll sit outside somewhere". and was told "sorry no you can only have that if you leave the premises, cross the road and eat it there as that's our managers takeaway policy". My dumbfounded expression was quite clearly a familiar sight to the waitress and was unmoved. I waited for the; "just kidding" to land but no matter how long we stared off, sadly it never did. This quite insignificant moment is what's wrong with this crazy world we live in. My advice to the management, spare your staff the embarrassment, spare us that interaction - and display your gross 10point sausage roll rules in writing proudly in accompaniment to your grossly lengthy sausage rolls.

We’d heard good things about the Beachhouse. Great website and even selling their own clothing brand! Thought we would brave the tight narrow lanes for a sunset drink in the National Trust owned cafe. Once we realised the reality of sitting in the cold on a scruffy old bench next to the lane with no option of going inside if it rained and no parasols, we almost left….. £11 later for 2 cans of coke and one small can of beer to then have to use the disgusting public toilets at the end of a beach day. We could have just sat on the benches opposite the lane with a better view of the sea and brought our own cans! Please everyone, think with your feet on this one. They’ve got you by the short and curlys as there is no where else for competition. The food may be great inside and the guy who served us was lovely but this shouldn’t be pimped up as a fancy bistro/bar. It’s too small, no proper facilities and it is just a ramshackled old hut over inflating its prices as it’s near Salcombe.

This cafe should be renamed Cafe Pass Agg... South Milton Beach is stunning but don't be fooled into thinking the tatty little shed will yield ruddy smiles, cakes and reasonably priced tea. My teenage son and I were told off immediately for not having a reservation when the place was empty at 5pm... then a teenager in board shorts sprints up to the table red faced and tells me off for intending to vape... literally just put the contents of my back pocket on the table which included a small vape and phone... never have I been chastised for intending to do something that I wasn't intending to do in a place where all I intended to do was spend money! I gulped down the remaining thimble of tea and gently stomped outside into a gale force storm muttering about the fact they forgot our overpriced handful of chips... only to be pursued then lectured by a waitress with a fake smile and cocked head telling me how I've never worked in hospitality which I have.. then said the most pass agg thing I've ever heard... 'It's not our fault you're having a bad day' ahahha... I was having a lovely day until I went in there. Guys your dilapidated shack aint the Ritz. Like it's sister establishment (Old School House at Mothercombe) lovely place to go for either a drink/snack or a proper meal. Friendly welcoming service, and an amazing atmosphere and location.

Absolute gem of a beach side cafe! The staff were all really friendly and helpful, and the food was amazing! I could have chosen anything off the menu! Everything is made fresh and tasted delicious. Prices were really reasonable for fresh seafood and great portions. The fish finger sandwiches were cheaper than at some chain restaurants in Leeds (for far superior quality) and the prices of the fish options were on a par with prices on the North East coast/Yorkshire. We were there with a toddler and they had a children's menu, which went down a treat.

We have visited the Beachhouse lots of times before, it never disappoints. The bang bang prawns are the best.

Just bought a bacon sandwich and cheese chips. The bacon is well over cooked so much so it was burnt. See photo. Staff were unwelcoming and the chips were the cheap ones in a tiny takeaway box. Not what I would expect for £28.00 including hot chocolates which were tiny also

Expensive ordinary food and drinks are extortion for a cafe and take away. Been there few years back when it was affordable.

Busy yet quality service. Views from the outdoor seating excellent. Next door National Trust car park at £6 a pop is a bit steep…

Paid £20 for a small box of ' locally caught fish', chips and tartar sauce. The fish, whatever it was, was very average and chips were overly greasy. Outrageously priced for what it was.

Shame , used to be decent, got torn a new one over Breakfast, My Hogs pudding was missing and got looked at like I'd dumped on the table when I queried it. Automatic service charge is a real bug , especially when it's a 1.5m reach from the counter to the table and service was distinctly below average. £20+ pp for breakfast and Coffee!!! Cancelled the other booking I had for later in the week and went to a lovely Garden centre in Loddiswell 👌

Nice big pub by the side of the A38. Tribute, Doom and a very good pint of Jail Ale. The food is good at a reasonable price. Plenty of room with different areas. Owner is usually sitting at the bar and friendly. Cheers!

Lovely, friendly, warm staff. Ace place to sit and watch the waves, even outside on a blustery day, slightly shielded from the westerlies.
