I have never been to a place which such a mix of reviews, but the gamble was worth it I think!!! Yes its small (half the charm if you ask me!) and it only has 5 (i think) big bench tables. Yes its not cheap but its FRESH fish, cooked right in front of you. The waitress was friendly, polite, and approachable. No-one minded our huge hairy dog, the food was amazing (scallops a particular highlight) and I was met with a free glass of prosecco for Mothers Day. Its a very cool little beach shack, with great atmosphere and great food. Book in advance! We loved it....thank you Beach House for a very memorable Mothers Day lunch! I did notice there was a VERY large queue for takeaway coffee etc outside which i can imagine is frustrating but as there is no where else serving coffee on a popular beach, i guess you have to expect a queue!

We had takeaway three times in the week we were in the area. We thought it expensive but were content to pay given the location and that we were on holiday. But all three times we asked for no salt on the chips (for our young child) and only once did they listen. By the time we had got the food back to the beach or car it was too late to complain. And they were really really salty!

We ordered two portions of fish goujons with chips and tartare sauce from the takeaway. £52 total which we thought was rather steep but we were very hungry and assumed it would be good quality. Quite the reverse. The fish pieces were mostly thin tail ends and were over cooked and dry. Portions small compared to your standard fish and chip shop. The chips and sauce were fine. Very poor value for such an inflated price and will not return.

Been coming for years and used to love it but SO disappointed now that a takeaway coffee is tiny !!! … flat white /latte /cappuccino all the same size!!! And price at 3.80 . This is such a shame as great location and nice tasting coffee. But a total rip off ! I sadly would NOT recommend it . If you sit on the premises you pay even more as VAT added to this and service charge ( you do however get a bit more coffee for a latte etc as different sized cups!)

Very extortionate for what is very standard English bistro fare. They have the attitude their prices are high because of the restaurant's unique position. Baked scallop - £6 each, two bottles of water £8.00, a very average bottle of sauvignon- £43. Then we had to listen across the entire restaurant - staff discussing and haggling their work shifts. It was a VALENTINE'S day lunch and we were the only two people there. Speaks volumes about what is wrong with this place.

Great location, and our food was outstanding, but I’m not sure I’ll return. Desperately expensive for what it is, and really uncomfortable benches. There were six of us crammed onto a table that would have been fine for four. Local fish goujons were lovely, as were the seafood stew and seafood linguine - in fact everything that came out the kitchen was great, but for me that didn’t make up for my feeling uncomfortable throughout the meal. They clearly have a captive audience because of their location, and my goodness they don’t half exploit that!

Wow! Some negative reviews on here! Glad I didn’t take any notice and we decided to try this little place anyway! Had a fabulous meal in this cozy little shack right on the beach. The fish was delicious, fresh and tasty, the atmosphere was buzzing with music playing, twinkling lights, and people enjoying themselves. Strangely we had a completely different experience to many mentioned in the comments. The staff were delightful, friendly and warm and explained all the dishes and even made a plain fish dish especially for our grand daughter. The price was exactly what we’d expect to pay for the delicious food, a decent bottle of wine, and the surroundings. If you’re thinking of visiting I would suggest you definitely go and see for yourself.

I was shocked to read some of the negative reviews on here about The Beach House. We’ve been visiting for years and have loved it every time; please try it for yourself and don’t let the moany reviews put you off! Everything today was a 10/10 - we arrived just as it got dark & there was a lovely, cosy atmosphere with great music. The staff couldn’t have been more accommodating & friendly, the chef made my 10 month old daughter a baby-friendly fish dish which I really appreciated (and she devoured!) and the rest of our food was delicious. My prawns were fresh, tasty and massive! My husband had the goujons and said they were fabulous & my dad had a gigantic bowl of mussels. No, it might not be the cheapest, but the food couldn’t be fresher and in my opinion you get value for your money in every way (food, customer service, views, ambience & setting). Plus… the menu is in front of you with the prices on… don’t order something if you’re not happy with the price, no one there is forcing your hand… It’s a tiny beach shack, so yes it may be hard to get a table as a walk-in, and yes you may find you’re close to the table behind you, or you may even be sharing a table with others, but that’s the beauty of this entire place. It’s a brilliant, relaxed & rustic restaurant serving brilliant seafood & a beautiful view of the ocean, so if you like that type of thing - a big bowl of garlic king prawns and a lovely bottle of wine looking out at the sea - visit this place!!

We go to the BeachHouse every year when down in the South Hams and was a bit worried about our return trip this year based on the recent reviews. So yes, the prices have hiked up a bit, but so have all hospitality venues in the UK in 2024. The food is still as good as it has been, though we did miss not having the seafood platter as an option, and the service was excellent, attentive and friendly but not intrusive. So we still recommend this eatery as a unique venue but owners please bring back the seafood platter or crab for November.

Really not impressed by the standard of the food. Over seasoned chips, underwhelming prawns with nondescript MSG based sauce on cheap salad and calamari that was cooked well but in a batter that had a flavour reminiscent of washing up liquid. All with a tiny portion size that was as insulting for the price as the flavour was to the palate.

We booked 2 tables for 8 adults and 7 children ( one 2 years and another 4 with real dietary issues) . The mother of the two children brought some food for the 4 year old and a small snack for the two year old . She was informed that no food could be given that was not purchased in the restaurant meaning she had to leave to feed the 4 year old in the car and cancel her order . Totally ruined the special day . Will make sure we never visit again and also the food was not great .

We recently visited the Beach House for a family lunch, bringing a group of 15 people (8 adults, 7 kids). The adults ordered starters and mains, the kids had mains, and we enjoyed wine and cocktails. The final bill was £484. However, the experience was ruined by the restaurant’s inflexibility. My daughter is a vegetarian, and unfortunately, there was nothing on the menu that catered to her dietary needs. We knew this would be an issue so we brought a sandwich and some fruit for her, since she had no other option. But the waitress informed us that outside food was not allowed, without any understanding of our situation. As a result, my wife and daughter had to leave the restaurant to eat their meal in the car, while the rest of the family stayed inside to eat. It felt incredibly unfair and left a very sour note on what should have been a pleasant family meal. For what we were spending, I would expect more accommodation for dietary restrictions or, at the very least, some understanding and flexibility in such situations. We were paying customers, and my daughter simply couldn’t eat what was on the menu. The lack of compassion from the staff was disappointing, and it’s unlikely we’ll be returning.

£22 for fish goujons and chips eaten out of a box on an outside bench. Small amount of fish as well. Wife ordered Burrata salad for £16, which turned up as a lump of cheese on sirupy figs - where were the tomatoes and it was pretty inedible??!! Kids had goujons as well. With 4 small bottles of water it came to just under £100. Most expensive ( and disappointing ) take-away I have ever has and we live in west London.

We have been visiting the area for a number of years now and one of our staples is to walk from Hope Cove to South Milton Sands which always includes lunch at the Beach House. We won’t be doing so again. For a family of 6 (4 adults, 2 children) the bill came to £125 for absolutely tiny portions of low quality food. The fish finger sandwich had three of the smallest fingers of fish in it on stale bread. The Bang Bang prawns consisted of 4 very small seemingly frozen prawns. The mackerel pate was almost missed on the plate it was such a small portion and only had one slice of sourdough toast with it, and the calamari was also poor. The kids sausage and chips were actually good but when we only had 3 small beers and soft drinks, the cost was ridiculous. We’re not cheap skates at all and eat out all the time, but this felt like we’d been ripped off. What was so frustrating was that the new Roxbox cafe which is only 1 min around the corner offered loads of atmosphere and far better value meals and drinks. Take my advice, walk past the once lovely Beach House and go to the Roxbox instead!

This beach restaurant was the nearest restaurant to the apartments we had booked for our holiday in Devon but we decided to try other restaurants in Devon instead after we read a lot of negative reviews about this beach restaurant. But I’m glad we decided to try it as it turned out to be the BEST restaurant in Devon. So I’m not sure why there are so many negative reviews. We ended up having 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners at The Beach Restaurant and we all loved it. It is an expensive restaurant but the food is superb. All freshly made and its a great menu. We booked the indoor tables for our two dinners. It was always very busy. Everything we tried from the menu was fantastic such as the crab linguini, mussels, prawns, squid and their salads. The sourdough bread and butter was very good with olives. Great kids’ menu. The icecream tubs for dessert were great so we all ordered them both nights. They had THE BEST Affogato dessert so I had it for both dinners. For breakfast we sat outside with views of the beach. It was the best breakfast we have had. Very good quality. We tried the full cooked breakfast as well as the breakfast baps and the waffles. Great drinks too. We could have easily eaten at this restaurant every night for the whole week of our holiday. Highly recommend this restaurant. Lovely friendly staff and great service.

Huge garlicky shell-on prawns, bang bang prawns, a phenomenal mackerel club and beautifully-executed mackerel pate were the stars of the show. Wanted to order everything on the menu. The location of this cafe is fantastic with amazing views. So when I saw the shed/cafe, I got really excited that we could have a few drinks and some snacks after a blustery visit to the beach. Sadly I was mistaken. I was met with a sour faced, passive aggressive upstart. As soon as I walked in, I basically felt like I was an inconvenience. I hadn’t booked, the menu was snatched away from me whilst I was reading it. Really, I was just in the way. I had hungry children waiting outside and coming out empty handed wasn’t an option. £35 later for some measley portions of chips, cans of drinks and half a cup of tea. I’m always up for supporting small local businesses, and I’m well aware of the cost increase within this industry, but it costs nothing to be friendly and welcoming. A shame really, as all I’ll remember from South Milton beach is the overpriced passive aggressive shed. Top tip- be a more organised parent than I was that day and pack some flapjacks and a flask!

This cafe should be renamed Cafe Pass Agg... South Milton Beach is stunning but don't be fooled into thinking the tatty little shed will yield ruddy smiles, cakes and reasonably priced tea. My teenage son and I were told off immediately for not having a reservation when the place was empty at 5pm... then a teenager in board shorts sprints up to the table red faced and tells me off for intending to vape... literally just put the contents of my back pocket on the table which included a small vape and phone... never have I been chastised for intending to do something that I wasn't intending to do in a place where all I intended to do was spend money! I gulped down the remaining thimble of tea and gently stomped outside into a gale force storm muttering about the fact they forgot our overpriced handful of chips... only to be pursued then lectured by a waitress with a fake smile and cocked head telling me how I've never worked in hospitality which I have.. then said the most pass agg thing I've ever heard... 'It's not our fault you're having a bad day' ahahha... I was having a lovely day until I went in there. Guys your dilapidated shack aint the Ritz. Delusions of grandeur by a bunch of patronising children who want to rip you off. Beware!!!!!

I booked 2 nights for friends online, i had some simple questions about parking and accessibility but couldn't get hold of anyone to answer my questions so i cancelled. I cancelled nearly 1 month before the cut off for a full 100% refund ( clearly stated in their contract when booking) . I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others

Retracting my previous review , bacon sandwich 7 pounds barely a slice in there. Lady cooking in kitchen screaming “I’ve put sachets in the box you don’t need the ketchup bottle” - she hadn’t put sachets in. Unfortunately only place open that early in Salcombe.
