Bayleaf in Brighton and Hove

Ordered takeaway from here. I thought it was going to be really nice from all the good reviews but all I can say is there are a lot of people in Brighton who don’t know what a bad curry is. The curry was watery, thin and obviously made from a “base” sauce that they just adapt slightly for each type of curry. Many cheap curry houses do this to make their food quick and easy but I wasn’t expecting it here. I ordered it “extremely hot” and it came out exactly as a medium hot would do, ie. Not extremely hot at all. To be fair to Bayleaf I guessed they would do this (it’s England, lots of curry houses tone down the heat for the locals) so won’t mark them down for it. The meat tasted like it was cooked from frozen though and the daal was watery and bland. I really was expecting more. This is a cheap way to run a restaurant and I felt conned by all the glowing reviews because, while I’ve had worse, the food was basic. Hey ho, my search for a decent curry house continues.

Went here for dinner last night. Food was great, service 5 star. What was very off putting was the young waiter making rude comments about people walking along St James street. " Have you seen the wild life on St James street".He did this on three occasion. I am guessing about the gay and trans community. final comment. Guys you have a restaurant in the gay village, this behavior is not ok on any level.Two of the four in our party were gay. this spoilt what was an enjoyable evening.

I had an excellent dinner at Bayleaf on a holiday weekend in Brighton. I was able to get a table immediately, but I was by myself, so larger parties should reserve a table. I had a prawn appetizer that was almost like a soft taco, and my main was a delicious fish curry. The food was all delicious. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful. The layout of the restaurant is tastefully designed. It was an excellent meal. Highly recommend!

Ate here in the evening as two couples. Seated by ourselves in the brightly lit side room which completely lacked atmosphere. Our friends enjoyed their meal but I thought it was average at best based on my meal and my wife's. My chicken Jalfrezi was edible but was only just hot enough temperature wise to avoid being sent back (and reheated). Tarka Dal ok but no better than something from Waitrose or m&S. The spicy fish was described as dry but came in a non descript brown curry sauce. The white fish in it was decent enough. The naan bread was tasty. £135 or so before service with 4 mains,3 sides, bread, 4 beers and 1 bottle of wine but no starters apart from a couple of poppadoms and no coffee or dessert. Perfectly edible but based on this meal I wouldn't go back but like I said our friends enjoyed their choices so perhaps they chose better. Forgettable apart from the company.

Ese restaurante tristemente nos decepcionó muy mal y no nos quedamos a comer allí, y como se estaba haciendo tarde decidimos caminar de regreso a nuestro hotel. En el camino de regreso pasamos por este restaurante indio The Bayleaf, que parecía muy acogedor y todavía muy abierto, así que decidimos darle una oportunidad. ¡No nos decepcionaron! Un joven muy agradable nos dio la bienvenida en el interior y nos mostró a una mesa acogedora a un lado. Mi esposa tiene alergias a los lácteos, gluten y huevo, pero esto no era un problema en absoluto aquí, y el joven Rafi era extremadamente servicial y amable, ayudándonos con el menú y asegurándonos de que nuestra visita aquí era perfecta. Nuestras opciones de comida eran deliciosos con todo el sabor muy fresco y sabroso. Había muchas opciones para probar y el ambiente era relajado y no nos sentimos apurados en absoluto. Tuvimos una experiencia muy agradable en este restaurante y lo recomiendo y volvería en nuestros próximos días lejos en Brighton. Gracias Rafi por convertir lo que había sido una noche decepcionante en una muy agradable!

We just walked in at eight on a Sunday night, and we're met with such a warm welcome and the aroma of delicious Asian food. Service was so friendly, and quick. The food was beautifully prepared and cooked. The only downside, and this is no biggie, is the spice levels. The menu says that you can ask for your preferred level, and we decided to leave the dishes as they were; we had never eaten there so didn't know what the starting point is and how high it could go. The food we ordered was not as spicy as we like, but was delicious none the less. Would I go back? Yes, I would. Would I recommend Bayleaf to a friend? Of course, it was a lovely dining experience and the food was delicious.

Went here on 11.04.2025 for birthday dinner. Called an hour before we arrived to make sure there would be a table. This was no problem. When we arrived we were shown to our table and provided with drinks and poppadoms. 1 veggie and 1 meat eater. The food we ate was cooked really well. The staff were not bothering us all the time. The drinks were £4.95 each. We drank Peronni. For 2 of us for food and drinks listed below was £82. 4 Peronni's and 1 sprite. Poppadoms x 4 Onion Bhaji Daal Bombay potatoes Pilau rice Peshawar naan Lamb biriani . Lamb was amazing. Can't wait to visit again. This was our first time eating here.

Partner and I thought we try this place for a nice curry. Unfortunately, in my opinion, even though the reviews for this place seemed good the curry that I received was disgusting I ordered the spinach chicken curry and my partner ordered a chicken Rogan curry unfortunately mine was very oily and bland my partner’s was also a bit on the oily side I’ve never come across a curry that has so much oil in its food this is disgusting . Also for the price that you paid the portion sizes were rather small, especially the naan bread , overpriced for bland and oily food Would definitely not step foot in this place again.

Desafortunadamente, en mi opinión, es uno de los peores currys que he comido. Pedí un pollo al curry de espinacas. He pedido muchos de estos de otros lugares en el pasado, pero este era desagradable sin sabor nadando en aceite. Mi compañero tenía el pollo al curry Rogan también muy aceitoso. I've ordered from here twice now and it's been so good both times. Being able to choose a spice level is really great and I'm happy to have found my new favourite indian restaurant!

The food was great but the Service was even better, we arrived too late to be able to dine in but the host welcomed us in informed us that they were only doing take away at that time and welcomed us in. We ordered had some mando lassi as we waited and chatted up the host. The food was excellent! Flavor wise amazing, my mouth is watering as I type this remembering the food. Would rate higher if I could!

Ok so I may be biased , it I have. Even coming to Bayleaf since the day they first opened . Always great food that can be modified, always friendly great service and the whole restaurant is. Warm cosy plant filled atmosphere!!!!

I couldn’t wait to share my time and experience at the Bayleaf. The waiter Shafi introduced himself, asked how we were. I was celebrating my Birthday, and there was a beautiful white bouquet of roses waiting for me at the the table (arranged by my friends and the restaurant) within minutes we were snacking on popadom with four dips, the sweetest mango chutney, spicy delicious pickle chutney, cool creamy mint and finely diced onion. The Tikka Masala was positively the best I’d ever had, with the veggie curry and chicken tikka rice, I couldn’t stop indulging, just simply full of flavour and tasted so fresh. This restaurant came recommended to me and without a doubt it did not disappoint. Perfect for the family gathering or for just two friends catching up, there is something on the menu for everyone’s pallet. Fresh vegan/veggie option to chicken beef or lamb. This will be my Indian restaurant go to. Not just for the food but also the warm and charming hospitality. Thankyou Bayleaf, we will be back

Great food great service would highly recommend

We loved this place! From the minute we walked in, we were treated like old friends (it was our first visit) and we loved that. The food was delicious - well spiced, well presented and plentiful. We had a great table in the window which had a view down to the sea - it would be very nice in the summer. We will definitely be back!

Just Eat had no drivers, but the restaurant had my food ready for nearly 2 hours. Helpful staff and lovely food.

Called up on new years eve on the odd chance they had a last minute table and they managed to fit us in. Absolutely amazing food - the best curries we have ever had. Already planning to come back! Really friendly and welcoming, all the staff were amazing! So glad we found this place at such short notice.

Mostly ok, the chicken tikka masala sauce was quite thick once all the water had run to the bottom of the rice, sticking to the spoon like mush. Not as creamy/sweet consistency as I was expecting, it had hot/sour notes instead. It wasn't bad. Paid for a poppadom and got a broken half one. Rice was fine. Please use foil containers instead of the plastic ones. Opted for this restaurant because I needed delivery before 5pm, Uber delivery was quick, food still warm, but the price is not viable. £26 for tikka masala and rice. Whereas my local usually costs at least £6 less.

crazy how expensive a korma is but doesn't come with rice,thankfully I had some boiled in a bag at home for the kids. paid for 2 popadoma and got 1 and no complementary onion salad. won't be ordering from here again

I had a takeaway through Ubur. Unfortunately, the food was nothing special and very pricey. This is the first and most likely the last time I will be ordering from this place.

Had a wonderful anniversary meal here on Saturday pre-theatre. Absolutely gorgeous food for a reasonable price and lovely people. Fast service too when we said we had theatre tickets. Thanks so much.

I’ve been here numerous times in the almost 7 years this establishment has been open and somehow they’ve been getting better and better since my first visit. All of the plants really add to the place. Honestly could not recommend it more.

Estuvimos visitando Brighton por unos días y nos apetecía una comida para llevar. Elegimos Bayleaf debido a las críticas anteriores y no nos decepcionó. Mi esposa tenía un pollo Tikka Masala y yo tenía pollo Palak. Ambos estaban muy sabrosos, aunque desearía haber pedido el Palak ligeramente picante especia - sabio. Las porciones eran enormes, (una porción de arroz era suficiente para los dos) , con hermosos trozos grandes de pollo. Probablemente sean más caros que algunos, pero vale la pena.

La comida era absolutamente maravilloso y muy bien presentado - desde los poppadoms y encurtidos a todo lo demás! Pedí pollo byriani y pedí las madras de curry vegetarianas calientes (que era) , sag paneer, chile naan y tarka dahl. Todo estaba tan delicioso que me lo comería todo de nuevo hoy! Mención especial a la luna caída que era la perfección en un plato. Gracias por una velada fabulosa donde la comida era excepcional y la bienvenida muy cálida!

The concoction of their beautiful biriyani mixed with any variation of their curries is incredible. I’ve been here multiple times and couldn’t recommend it anymore. Definitely coming back soon. Especially for their fresh, fluffy naan.

Bayleaf offers a wonderful dining experience with its rich, authentic Indian flavors. The lamb curry was tender and perfectly spiced, while the garlic naan was a delightful complement. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made for a lovely evening. Highly recommend!

Haven’t had service as good as this in a restaurant in a long time - Immediately very welcoming, went out of their way to make us comfortable - Food was also super delicious and fresh. Credit to Al our server who made the whole experience such a pleasure. Thanks guys will be returning soon

One of the worst Indian food I ever had in Brighton.. Its tailor made for British people. No spice, nothing. Even vindaloo was so blunt. Garlic naan looked like a garlic bread. Wasted 90£ tonight !! Regret it badly.

Ordered 2 butter chickens, portion sizes good, but both dishes we bland, tasteless and resembled nothing what a, butter chicken does, watery and horrible. Really dissapointed considering it was over £40

Myself and my partner came for a spontaneous meal after a long journey. We was served by a gent called Shafi who took care of us, his customer service was excellent. The food was beautiful and atmosphere was lovely too. We will return when we visit Brighton again next year 100% recommend!

This lovely Indian restaurant is open for lunch and all through the day. We go often and like it so much that we had our wedding reception in there! They even grow the chillies they use in the restaurant. We use both the dine in and takeaway services both are excellent.

We went to the Bayleaf because of it's (almost) 5 star Trip Advisor rating, so were expecting good food, with excellent flavours an textures. Nice atmosphere, lots of customers, plenty of seating, so we were looking forward to trying this highly rated restaurant. The staff could not have been nicer, friendlier or more attentive, it was the food that let this place down. I L-O-V-E Dal, it is one of my favourite Indian dishes so ordered the Takha Dal (lentils with spices and herbs) as sook as I spotted it on the menu. Unfortunately this was not a good choice, it was incredibly bland, an sloppy, (it tasted like it could have come out of a can) certainly nothing about it said fresh or home made. No flavour at all. He ordered the Chicken Dupiaza (A medium dish prepared with chopped onions, tomatoes, green peppers, ginger, garlic and fresh coriander) and said similar, mushy, flavourless and did not have any texture at all. I liked the Nan - he didn't saying it was too doughy. The Chicken Tikka was ok. Enough of it, cooked well, and was tender, it came with a side garnish and the same sauce on the side that came with the papadom's. At over £60 for the two of us, I would not go here again. Expensive and underwhelming food unfortunately.

Visited again, this time with friends as we had received excellent food and customer service previously. We were not disappointed,as we received excellent service and food once again. So tasty! The staff and manager particularly Rafe was excellent, friendly, chatty and attentive. Highly recommend this restaurant. Great value for money, lovely surroundings and atmosphere.

The best curry restaurant in Brighton, if not the UK.

Food was strictly ok, quantities were small and in that context highly overpriced. I do not think this is an authentic Indian restaurant, but an Indian restaurant ran by Bangladeshi staff. Seating was bit cramped for a large group as well. We did not have a booking(friend had called earlier but was told it is walk-in). When we arrived, we were told it is minimum £20 spend or else we don’t get a place. I do not appreciate when restaurant owners treat Indians as second class citizens and think we are not going to spend.

Food was just as good as any other indian restaurants nothing special or unique taste. The staff are just not so attentive or knowledgeable and also don’t have hospitality. Just a casual restaurant order your food,eat,pay and leave. Also of all the places i have visited the priced seems a bit high even for the inflation it’s not justified. The sides are almost near the price for mains.

Excellent place to eat! Went with my cousin and very much enjoyed the meal! We went there in Ramadhan and the owner recognised us straight away! Very good ambience! Excellent service! A bit expensive. Food is good. I didn’t enjoy any of the sauces but I guess that’s a personal preference. The restaurant looks nice and well decorated. Would come back to try a different dish as they have many options to choose from.

It’s a terrible experience I had ever. Food price high but food extremely small quantity even it’s not not for one adult as well. For babies there food quantity okay but not for adults. It’s a joke we pay more and we can’t get our full one person. Please before we go have a look carefully

Hi all , Firstly that was not authentic Indian place. I had most terrible experience at sky high price. The lack of quality in the dishes such as Taste , freshness and portion is not fair at all specially on name of Indian restaurant . There is big mismatch btw quality of food , the high prices & disappointing food quality. I am just trying to help people to make an informed decision whether or not to give that place a visit . The food tasted like they reheated old food. It was oily and not authentic. Even the portion was extremely small. Would not recommend.

My family and I went here for the first time and this was easily one of the best curries we’ve had! (I had lamb rogan) Everything was delicious and fresh. Portions were just right leaving us full and satisfied. Servers were very friendly! The place is very colourful and clean. Would recommend!!

The food was not ground breaking but good enough. The service was poor, the waiter even charged us for the beer he spilt on my friend… a very disappointing experience.

Exceptionally friendly staff made our visit here very enjoyable. Some of the dishes seem a bit heavy on the cream for my taste so I wouldn’t order those again, but the rest were very enjoyable and I would come back. The mirrored walls in the interior make this a nice airy place to eat.
