Bay of Bengal in South Oxfordshire

Going downhill fast - this place used to be my favourite. I understand mistakes happen, but... 1) The bottle of Kobra beer served had gone flat. We asked for a replacement and the waiter came over and poured the fresh beer into the same glass the flat beer was in! Finally we got a fresh beer and a fresh glass. 2) Poppadum dips were below par and below temperature. The condensation all over the metal serving dish shows that they serve them straight from the fridge. 3) Served a cheese nan, instead of a chilli nan. Waited for replacement. 4) We were told the chef 'forgot to put egg' in the dish we ordered, and were offered a replacement, but we were already waiting for a replacement nan, so that would have left one of us with a plate of rice to go cold while waiting. 5) Weekday special is £20 per head. Bill comes out at £99 for 3 people. Drinks were listed as £20.45 on the bill, so that's £18.50 tip included in the bill. I'll give you another tip: sort it out guys.

Great takeaway tonight, king prawns and lamb absolutely delicious and no oil!

Called Bay of Bengal and ordered our meal, polite on the phone, time until food was accurate and around 30 mins which was perfect. The food was honestly amazing, and we couldn’t fault even one thing. We had lamb madras, chicken makhani, rice, naan, Bombay potato and onion bhaji’s. Highly recommend - great service and food was spot on!! Martina

This was a nice normal Indian restaurant with a large choice on the menu. We all enjoyed our food which arrived promptly and all together bearing in mind we were a party of 11. Highlight was definitely the lamb shank which was falling off the bone, Staff very friendly and portions big. Reasonably priced. Would definitely visit again if we were in the area.

The food wasn't up to the usual standard, plus they have started to charge 10% service now, just added to the bill, they should as before they apply the service charge.

Three old schoolfriends and I visited this restaurant as part of a reunion event. We had never been to it previously but when we arrived, first impressions were favourable because the venue, probably a former pub, was smart and spacious. The poppadums were a little let down by the rather thin mango chutney, but when our main courses arrived, it was an entirely different story. All four of us were very impressed by them. I had the mollee fish curry and it was delightful. The sauce was not so spicy as to overpower the fish but yet was still very tasty. The portion was very generous, with the large pieces of boneless fish almost totally filling the dish in which the course was served. The staff were some of the friendliest and most helpful I have encountered in a restaurant. Many thanks for a most pleasant evening.

I have been using this restaurant for take away meals for over a year now following the recommendation of a friend. The food is really excellent. Every dish has its own unique flavour and the staff are considerate and helpful. I would thoroughly recommend this establishment to anybody

Another fantastic meal at the bay of bangle , went with the family for a birthday meal and as usual the food and service was top notch. The quality of the food is always first class an there is so much choice. We took a birthday cake which the guys brought out and sang along with us which was a great touch.

Had a lovely night at Bay of Bengal tonight. We walked in to the restaurant and it was packed. We were lucky as we have booked. We have started with the lovely poppadoms. That mint sauce was banging. We shared three mains, from all three I have to mention the hoyro chicken which was recommended. Full of flavour and very tasty. Naan bread was crispy as I like a bit well done. Food came on time, the waiters were very helpful and quick. Top dining experience. Well done team Bay of Bengal!!

Been if a few times, awesome food and service. Love the Naan and the sizzling dish I had. Staff are awesome, always have a good chat. Would give more than 5 star. Love it.

Delicious food with attentive service.

Average food and they charge for " service" if had had any I might of paid. The only service I experienced was that of bringing the food to my table, oddly enough I thought that's what I'd already paid for in the cost of the food. Drinks very expensive. Small diet coke £3 Won't go back

Food was OK, although my curry was all heat and no flavour. The main problem was the service and hygiene…it took them forever to come and clear our plates and when they finally did, we asked the waiter if we could take the leftovers home. He came back to the table with a couple of containers, threw a plastic bag down and then grabbed our onion bhaji with his fingers!! I told him he can’t touch customers’ food with hands, but instead of apologising, he just said that his hands were clean and he then grabbed our naan bread and started pushing it into a container with his hands! If you know the history of that place, under its previous name (Star & Garter), you might know they were closed down because of health and hygiene, which is why they changed names and reopened. Clearly, their attitude to food safety is still appalling, so we will never set foot in there again. By way of apology, they gave us a few free popadums, but had overcharged us for the ones that we ordered anyway. Never again!

Food is always really good but delivery has become a nightmare. Last few orders have been very late - almost an hour late on one occasion and when we ordered this weekend (at 5:55), the advised delivery time was 1hr 5 mins. But it took 1 hr 45 mins and was delivered to the wrong address anyway!!. Thankfully, a neighbour (that I do not know) was kind enough to check the address and bring our order round to us - by which time it was cold and all needed re-heating. Such a shame as we really enjoy the food and deliveries used to be prompt - usually earlier than advised, so not sure what's gone wrong.

Family dinner on Christmas day was superb. Food was wonderful, staff catered for allergies within the group without any issue. Service was excellent and we were all made to feel like part of the family. We all really enjoyed our dinner, we had a range of dishes all were fantastic.

Now this was a Christmas with a difference. Treated by family to a really wonderful Christmas Day dinner. Service very good, food excellent, table beautifully laid and hot plates. (No turkey for us). Really wish we had such an excellent Resturant like this where we live! Thanks staff, chef and family for a really lovely dinner.

Wonderful meal and service was excellent. We had a table of 9 peaple for a birthday celebration meal . All the food was delicious hot and spicy ,mild and tasty to everyone’s individual tastes. They brought out the birthday cake that I had dropped off earlier with candles..

Absolutely rammed on a Friday night!

Nice decor, bay of bengal etched plates - unique - not seen this at other restaurants. Food was good, ordered starters, main and side dish with rice or nan for £19.95 as part of their deal - well worth it! Service was good! Clean restuarant and w.c too. I will visit/eat here again if I'm in Thame again.

Still my favourite place for a take away. Great people and good food. My advice, try something different from the menu, you will be pleasantly surprised. Not the best value drinks and whilst tasty the side dishes are a little pricy. Well worth a visit.

Worst Food, no where near to Indian Food , please don’t advertise as an Indian Food restaurant. Rude waiters who just kept saying “that’s how we do it”. Served coconut based absolutely sweet chicken In the name of Butter chicken, Dal Makhni was yellow In color with sugar. Chef needs to travel and see how it’s made before labeling the dishes. None of the guys had name plates and were reluctant to share their names. Started to clean cutlery and making noise while we were still seated. Not at all accommodating and were unwilling to call the chef so we could try and make him understand what we wanted. The waiters were just giggling away at us. No where near Indian Food, don’t spoil Indian food reputation. Please serve Bangladeshi food only or whatever ur good at. Utterly disgusting and disrespectful behavior towards tourist.

Good Food, Good Atmosphere, Good Pint.

We went with friends on a Saturday night after enjoying a couple of central Thame pubs. Its a 10 minute walk from the centre (but parking to rear). Table service with table linen, and a good reasonably priced meal with good sized portions. We enjoyed our meal and the evening! £55 total for both of us. It certainly wasn't busy - we walked straight in.

Lamb & chicken biryani was good & different. It was Bengali biriyani probably & the quantity is too good. Served with masala. Peaceful atmosphere & good service.

Delivery arrived after 1 hour. Missing part of the order. When called to request missing food was told would be another 30/40 mins for delivery after a lengthy conversation trying to explain what’s was missing! Resolved by collecting ourselves. But no compensation offered.

Hit and miss. Waited 2 hours for our order last night, was told it’ll be 45 mins!! It was cold and some of the order was inedible, soggy nann and chewy chicken. Would recommend Raj Bhuj in Stone, free delivery to Thame and far superior.

Oily and curdled! Ordered via JustEat to my hotel and unfortunately, the curry was the oiliest and most disgusting thing I’ve ever had delivered! There’s no way this could have been missed so I guess they just don’t care! Stay away! It got flushed down the toilet where it belongs.

Do not use this restaurant, awful service tonight. Staff virtually non exsistant, ignored us for 20 minutes, not even offered a drink. The restaurant was not busy but they seemed more bothered with takeaways and deliveries than seated customers. Other diners were also complaining about the length of time food was taking to be served,and also forgetting drink orders. Quality of food was acceptable but not brilliant. Only visiting Thame for a few days but would never recommend this restaurant.

The staff are rude and come across as like they are bored of life. Food arrived cold with 3 items missing 1x dish had prawns in it even though on the website it didn't state it came with prawns!! (Could be very dangerous) To fix the issue they offered me a free rice.. ridiculous NEVER EAT HERE

Sensational food, really tasty and the staff including Mr Khan could not do enough for us. My girlfriend had to be rolled out! Will come again.

Still waiting on an order 2hours and 30mins later. (Ordered at 6:30, it’s 9pm now). Spoke to the guy over the phone who said it’ll be another 25-30mins - taking it to over 3hours?

Great presentation and portions, but a tad too oily/greasy. I'm not a fan of having to purchase rice separately as itemising the menu isn't ideal; all-inclusive meals need to make a comeback.

Recommend the Chicken Tikka Pathia. 👍

Curry although tasty had too much oil in for my liking

Bay of bengal were very helpful and friendly. Our starters and meals were all excellent. I have a strong preference for very mild dishes. The waiting staff could not have been more helpful with advice. They also made a veg side that was 'well cooked' and it was - and the flavours of all foods were great. Clean, warm, traditional pleasant surroundings. Thanks Bay staff.

Good Food. Just add 30 minutes to the suggest delivery time. They don’t do refunds if you have to wait a long time.

A really enjoyable meal that seemed good value for money. (Good sized portions) Friendly service and to top it off, when the owner couldn't source us a taxi he drove us home himself. Very few places would offer that level of customer care! Very thoughtful and much appreciated.

Worst Indian meal ever Not authentic and I have lived in India, best was the lemon rice, lamb chop starter was inedible, byrani abissmal and I’ve made better Ambiance of restaurant was uninspired too when I went to pick the food up

Worsed take away ever! Ordered a lamb Rogan Josh the lamb was tough the dish itself was bland and tasteless. The bargees were Okish but very dried out. Complete waste of my money it was thrown in the bin.

We've had takeaway from here a few times recently and yes its a bit pricey but by far the best in the area, everything is delicious (king prawn massala best we've tasted since we lived in Leicester!) A lot of people complaining about delivery times but ours is always within the time on the app (around 1 hr). Deducted one star for charging local delivery even when spending over 30 quid. Apart from that 100% recommend.

This restaurant is advertising itself as 2 for 1 on the meerkat app. Just called to book a table and they said they do not do meerkat but we can ‘come in and they’ll sort us out’. No. Stop advertising on there if you’re not offering it. Wasting peoples time.

The staff are very friendly. The food is generally quite good, with some dishes that are very good. The tarka dahl can be a bit spotty as to whether it atually tastes of garlic or not. The Chot Poti is a brilliant new discovery. We tried to access the restaurant for the first time by foot this week. They have a ramp for a wheelchair, but the wheelchair has to climb some bricks to get to the ramp - not great. We navigated this and found that the wheelchair didn't fit through the narrow door. I discussed this with the staff and they said "bad luck" - not very impressed with this response. Indeed there's nothing that can be done, but some acknowledgement of the problem would have been preferable.

Waited nearly 2 hours for my takeaway when the website said 55 minutes. When I called to see where it was, they said it would be another 20 minutes and when I asked if I can get any money off or the delivery charge refunded they hung up on me. The food tasted good but it arrived cold.

Have used the Bay of Bengal over recent months as they are the only Curry Restaurant in Thame. The quality of the food has been good for eating in and for takeaway. However have noticed that the standard of table service has deteriorated considerably on recent visits. Is this because they are having to deal with takeaways at the same time? If so the restaurant customers should have priority. A recent Saturday night visit we waited nearly an hour for the main course indeed had to get up and chase progress. Also had to chase the waiter to get the bill. Overall a very disappointing experience. A pity as it is good to support local businesses. Would definitely give them a miss in future and hope they get themselves sorted out.

It was a brilliant evening. Excellent curry and very well presented. I would recommend it and go again.

Food arrived very late stone cold. Ordered lamb biriani and got spicy rice. On further inspection, I found 2 tiny pieces of chicken. The vegetable curry was just a load of onions and a few potatoes. Shockingly bad, the worst takeaway I’ve had - and they had the cheek to add a service charge on top of the £2 for delivery.

When I went there I thought it was okay at first until I got my food there was a piece of plastic wrapping in my food and i nearly swallowed it I looked around and it seemed pretty dirty and there was not much variety for food do not go go somewhere else

Used this restaurant for over 4 years about 20-30 times and now never again. If you get it wrong you should sort it out. Got our order wrong then said we would 'sort next time' awful service for ok food. Should have been refunded for the wrong dish!!! Plenty of good curries in the area. Duo chef chinnor is brilliant.

I dined there last night on our annual school reunion. The quality of food and the service was exceptional. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Always been my fave Indian locally and I’ve been coming here for years , but not anymore. Delivery Took longer than it should to arrive, one item was missing, the whole order was just about warm at best, they don’t offer pilau rice so I went with plain rice - which is the perfect description. No flavour at all. Really disappointing, wont order again. Used to be so good but seems their main competitor closing has lead to complacency. They also offer free delivery if you spend over £20, I spent over this but was still charged a £2 fee. House of spice Haddenham for me next time

Great looking restaurant, with amazing food and great service

Delicious food. Not the fastest service but we were there in a big group on a busy evening and didn't mind the extra time to chat and catch up. 179 options on the menu makes it very hard to choose!

We booked a take away for the evening which turned up promptly. The whole meal was absolutely delicious. There was plenty of food for two and all dishes were cooked to perfection. Thank you!

Great vast menu, great atmosphere, excellent food

The outlook over the bay is beautiful. The food is very poor and very overpriced. We found the waiters arrogant. Tarka dhal came up like dishwater, inspiteof my asking for it to be served very thick.I asked for them to take it away and make it thick. It came back looking and tasting like dishwater. Very over rated and over priced. One of the worst Indian meals we have eaten.

We had a takeaway this evening that we picked up, all three curry’s were delicious, rice was fluffy and the chapati was home cooked, best we have had for a long time. This is the first time we have used this restaurant. My husband said it was clean and welcoming when he picked it up. Thank you

Not great tasteless and over sauced. What was the meat I was eating? Everything very bland, waiters were nice though.

Fantastic selection, all the traditional meals plus lots more unusual ones. One of the best onion bhajis ever. Came within the time quoted, friendly delivery. Thoroughly enjoyed our first lockdown takeaway.

I ordered a takeaway from them and it took them 2 and a half hours to deliver it!! They said the restaurant was busy so they couldn’t do my order. Then they said there was a mistake with my order so they had to recook it. Then the delivery driver couldn’t find the house but didn’t bother phoning me asking for directions. I will never be using this restaurant again!

Best in the area, it's worth driving to get too. Innovative menu. Always tasty, great chefs every day of the week. Great portion size. Reasonable price mains. A tip, take a main veggie as a side dish, it's better value

I’ve been going to this curry house for years and had many a take away but tonight was probably one of the best ever. Excellent flavours, lovely spices, a good volume of meat to sauce and everything cooked beautifully. It’s the first time I’ve used the website and delivery and it was spot on, great service!

We have been in to eat and had two take aways recently and have always really enjoyed the food. The takeaway we got tonight was so good that I thought I would leave a review. Really fresh ingredients and clearly freshly cooked, good portions, good spicing and flavours, soft chapatti and not to oily like some Indians can be. I love cooking Indian food and have travelled in India and have tried so many Indian restaurants and for a local Indian this is good!

Top crack at the Bay of Bengal, dead Nan tho but the girls were quality

I have had two takeaways just to make sure my first wasn,t untypical. Deliberately chose a popular dish of chicken tandoori balti. The sauce was greasy and plentiful, but the meat was meager and just chopped tandoori chicken plopped in. Also as has been said below, plenty of onions!.If you know your curries you will be dissapointed by this place.

prawn korma had some kind of meat in it. The sauce on both Kormas we had were ridiculously sweet to the point after a few mouthfuls you couldn’t eat anymore. Would of been better off getting one from the supermarket.

Absolutely stunning takeaway meal from these guys tonight . Whether it’s takeaway or eat in they are friendly and helpful and as of yet we have not been disappointed. Well worth a visit..

Having 14 of us travel from all corners of the UK we were delighted to land on this great little curry house. An interesting menu, delicious food and great service made for a really good evening. All food was served piping hot onto to hot plates and the quality of both the meat and the sauces was high. Staff were attentive but not intrusive and the service was both professional and kind!

We ordered a takeaway of a Chicken Balti and Chicken Tikka. Both were tasteless; the Balti tasted very sweet and the Tikka was without any flavour.But the the real issue is that both were full of onion - so much that we could fill another dinner plate with the stuff. It’s clearly used as a filler to make the meals seem big.We won’t be going back.We’ve had much better supermarket ready meals for a third of the price.

Used to eat here quite alot until there was a supposed change of management. very disappointed with the service I recieved. I phoned and placed an order in which time i was left on the phone for over 5 mins just listing to people order over the bar until I was hung up on, then I was told 45 mins to an hour once I managed to speak with someone. Our food turned up 1hr 20 mins later. The food itself was good maybe a bit greasy for my taste but nice. Just a bit disappointed with the way I was dealt with.
