We stayed 3 nights in this lovely hotel where the en suite bedrooms were clean and well equipped with en suite bathrooms, hair dryers and tv As a former chef i can be quite critical of the food but i could not fault it from the excellent Northumbrian breakfast to the superb steak and ale pie in the evening as well as lovely fish and chips and gammon steak

This place may come up on top of the reviews in the area but i really don’t know why. We stayed near by and as it was a Monday night and there wasn’t much other choice in the area, we visited this place for dinner. We had looked on line and had seen that they serve food in the dining room from 6.30pm. We arrived at 6.20pm asked at the bar if they were serving food on this night to be told yes. We ordered a drink and sat in the bar waiting to be called for a table on the advice of the bar staff. There was no one else in the pub eating at this time and half a dozen believe locals at the bar. We were still there at 6.50pm and we had been completely ignored! At which point we got up and left. How rude to treat any customers like this considering that you probably don’t get a great amount of passing trade at this time of year. Note to self, trust the reviews of others, because this has been mentioned previously. Only gave this one star because you can’t give any less!!!

Had Sunday carvery roast lunch today which was very good; three roasts: pork, beef and ham, all of which were excellent. Great Yorkshire puds and good not overcooked vegetables. Sat in dog friendly pub side rather than restaurant which was fine. Staying on holiday in lodge in village and will be back. Highly recommended as both village drinking pub and good pub food. Do Take Aways and have accomodation as well.

Walked in from East Woodburn whilst we were baby sitting 6 month old granddaughter. Not booked but were made very welcome and found a quiet spot for the buggy. Decided on the Sunday Roast which was perfect in every way. All 3 of the meat options beef, pork and ham were cooked beautifully with a wide selection of condiments. Veggies spot on - good selection and very tasty. Don’t usually get excited by carveries as my partner’s cooking is just the best but we both enjoyed this meal so much we felt the need to post a review! Compliments to the chef who was also very friendly and welcoming. We paired the food with a rose and a pint of the Bay Horse ale - both went down well. In all a lovely time was had which can be tricky when you’re pushing a baby buggy around and asking for things to be heated in the microwave. Many Thanks to everyone who made this a great visit! We’ll certainly be back.

We dined in the bar on both evenings and the food was excellent. The bar had a great atmosphere and was busy with locals - a proper pub with pool table, dart board & jukebox & a nice outside area. Staff were all great, especially Harvey behind the bar. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place. Fantastic value for money.

Don’t expect to get served or even attended to here. Not interested in people stopping on the way to or from Scotland. Waited in a dining room full of dirty tables with an unattended carvery for ages. Asked an Uninterested bar attender twice who said to sit in this room. Rang a bell, no response. Waited and waited. Eventually asked this man again in the bar who got a sour faced rude lady to come through into the dining room. She started to clear dirty plates and reluctantly told us that she would get the chef. Instead of waiting for the chef my daughter and I left. We felt totally disregarded and that our custom wasn’t wanted. So don’t pop in there expecting to be served or even talked to pleasantly as you will certainly not receive a friendly polite welcome here. Avoid at all costs!

Stayed two nights in March. Have to say the staff were great, very friendly and pleasant. The food was excellent in the bar as was the cooked breakfast which was well above average in terms of quality and quantity. The room was somewhat dated but still well equipped. The ensuite shower cubicle was a preformed unit - reminding me of the ensuite in a ferry cabin - but was perfectly functional and clean. The bar was fairly busy on Friday night with young farmers (I think) but was no trouble and they had left by 11ish so no disturbances. Saturday had an anniversary party downstairs but again absolutely no disturbances to us. I would be happy to stay again and recommend to others too.

We were staying locally in West Woodburn and this quaint local family run hostelry was the closest to us so we had to try it. We were not disappointed. Lovely staff, excellent food. You must try the Jedburgh Haggis with Neeps & Tatties. It might be because I live in Gloucestershire or I have just lived a sheltered life but I have never seen Haggis on a menu before. Anyway it was excellent and one of the most tastiest dishes I have enjoyed in a long time. I visit Northumberland every few years as I have extended family there and next time the Bay Horse Inn is top of my list to visit again. There was a choice from three meats, I chose the Turkey, and the food was excellent, everyone was very happy with their choices. Vegetarian options are also available and cooked to order. Desserts were home made (by Hilda) and delicious. This is really the only catering option in the village so it was a relief that it was so nice. There is also a takeaway menu which could be very useful for visitors in the area.

Not a bad place but needs a refurbishment. Barmaid didn't smile once the whole time I was there. You have to order from the bar too, which goes against current C-19 guidelines. However, the pub isn't really big enough to realistically follow them! I was a little shocked too when I got up to go to the bar the second time. My pants almost stuck to the chair as it was so sticky. I caught a few local residents staring at me whilst I was in there too. Made me feel a little intimidated. On the plus side, the food was good and the drinks were affordable. Would I go back again? Probably not but I would if I had too.

Worth noting if passing and planning your journey around this. On a positive, the picnic tables looked good and it would likely be good if they were true to their signs.

As it was the 2nd day since the lockdown restrictions were lifted we rang to book in advance. Have driven past here many a time as it is located on the A68 but never pulled over.We ate on a Sunday afternoon so it was Carvery day. 3 choices of meat and the usual vegetables and trimmings.. Meats were moist and really tasty. The veg were all super hot and fresh. Chef didn’t skimp on the meat either unlike some of the usual Carvery Chains. There was a limiited starter options which we skipped, opting for a Pudding instead. Sticky Toffee was sublime with lashings of Toffee sauce and custard, Fudge cake and Bread and Pudding not to bad either.1 round of Soft drinks, and 2 courses for 3 came to around £60.. We stayed last month at the Bay Horse on a trip to Northumbria. First viewing was not positive. We were shown into Room 5, I think, and noticed an interesting bathroom arrangement. The toilet, shower cubicle and washbasin were contained in a a kind of cramped capsule. Other interesting features included notices posted on the bedroom walls exhorting you to buy lucky horseshoes at a cost of either £7.99 or £9.99, depending which wall you looked at and an out of date hotel guide; the main feature of which was a notice threatening you with a corkage for having alcoholic drinks in your room. The decor in the hotel was dated, which I normally don't mind, but I draw the line at a layer of black dust lying on the window frames.Downstairs there was a fairly raucous bar, but there seemed to be no alternatives within walking distance. We had an evening meal. Breakfast was ok and the staff were friendly. We left one day early. My overall view was that it was an interesting experience not to be repeated; something like Fawlty Toweres meets the League of Gentlemen.

Having visited the Bay Horse many years ago, I was pleased to see that very little had changed - it has still retained the old world charm and atmosphere. We received a very warm welcome from the bar staff and then studied the menu to find a varied choice of home-cooked food. I decided on steak and ale pie, and my husband chose the 'haggis neeps and tatties'. The food was freshly cooked, delicious and piping hot. From the moment we entered the bar and were warmly greeted by the landlord, we knew we had stopped at the right place. This is a quintessentially English pub and comes complete with garden leading down through a gate to the River Rede. On a sunny Sunday it is pretty close to heaven. I can heartily recommend the food, particularly the beautifully cooked Sunday roast: this is meat as it should be - well basted and succulent, with crisp roast potatoes, buttery swede and a selection of vegetables cooked to perfection, plus (of course) large Yorkshire puddings. The service too was brilliant - helpful, friendly and dedicated to making sure you have a good time. Make sure you get puddings and coffee too. The pub is spotlessly clean too. Staying for a few days in a holiday cottage at Otterburn and looking for somewhere to have a nice meal on the Sunday. The Bay Horse was one of the recommended places to eat on the welcome pack in our cottage. After a day visiting Hadrian's Wall we decided to stop for a meal on the way back. As we entered the bar we were immediately met with an unpleasant smell. Arriving at the bar we were served by a member of staff who clearly had no wish to be pleasant or welcoming. After ordering drinks for myself and my partner she served the drinks and took the note I was holding without telling me how much the drinks cost, then delivered a £5 note to me whilst looking the other way, with no thank you or any other comment. I'm not sure I ever come across a member of staff in a pub who was so rude. We sat down with our drinks and read conflicting notices on the all about the times food was served - one said the Sunday hog roast was available until 5 pm and another said 6pm. Either way, we had already decided that we wouldn't be eating here. We did not feel welcomed at all and beat a hasty retreat after finishing our drinks. We won't be visiting again.

The food was great, first time I've been anywhere with a hog roast for the carvery on a Sunday, meat was generous and you could help yourself to as much as you liked. Deserts were not quite as good, cheesecake should ever come with cream, certainly not single and squirty at the same time. Good British deserts though.Just to reiterate HOG ROAST carvery!

I'm usually unimpressed by a carvery and would probably have chosen to visit other than on a Sunday lunch when the full menu would be available. How wrong was I! Having enjoyed starters of Jedburgh Haggis and black pudding respectively, Mrs Smith and I rocked up to the best carvery I've had for as long as I can remember! For a start there was some freshly made crackling. The meats were fresh looking and delicious and there was an original selection of veg and fine yorkshire puddings. At this stage the Mrs fell by the wayside - "full t'brim" as they say! Someone had to make a more thorough appraisal of the full menu so I stepped forward and took on the sticky toffee pudding with lashings of cream. Heck that was a good sticky toffee pud - great flavour and not overly sickly! Mrs S enjoyed a generous pot of tea for one and we were done. The staff were attentive throughout and even provided details of a walk from the pub through the countryside to the east. We were welcomed as we came through the door, poured drinks (a real ale for me) whilst considering the menu and given our pick of available tables - with a choice of the bar or the restaurant. We will probably be back - even though it is off our beaten track...

Nice looking pub, and although a little run down inside, they served up a pretty good Carvery on Sunday (pizza's apparently are good too - will try next time). Prices were reasonable. Although you would describe this as a fairly typical English village pub, each one has it's own unique charms and there was plenty of that here. Perhaps not suprising as, apart from the pub the only other thing the village has is a phone box. Would recommend if you are staying in the area, though to be honest it's probably the only pub for miles.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

The Bay Horse Inn is a typical olde worlde country coaching inn located on the A68 at West Woodburn near Hexham in Northumberland. When I first visited this establishment back in 2013 I gave it an excellent review, because it deserved it. I'm sorry to say that the quality of the food didn't come close to matching that standard on this visit. The Bay Horse epitomises all that is good about these types of local country public houses, the heart of the community as was evident once again on my visit. There is plenty of private off-road parking available for diners, those simply stopping off for refreshment, or for those who are staying, as the Inn also offers accommodation. This review will focus on the food and drink as we were staying elsewhere. Disabled access is great and from the car park to the front door is on the level. There are no steps to negotiate at the main entry, and internally the open plan areas are all on the level, permitting ready access to all areas including the toilets. On first entering you will see the locals seated at the bar, which for some might appear off-putting – fear not, remember it’s their local pub as well as you’re chosen restaurant. Internally the furnishings and fittings are as one might expect, mahogany beams, lots of old wood, whitewashed walls, pictures of local hunts, horse brasses, plates and assorted nic-nacs everywhere. Just as it should be for a place like this. Sometimes with this amount of ‘stuff’ places can forget and very quickly you have a dirty and dusty environment. Not so here it appeared to be well cleaned and looked after. The staff are all the friendliest bunch of people you could expect to meet. Polite and interacting with their guests as much as the locals. It really was a pleasant and refreshing change to find staff that enjoy their work and are prepared to reflect that in all aspects of what they do. They’re also a busy bunch of people, running a bar, taking orders, delivering drinks and food to tables and clearing tables. There’s no time for slacking in this place. Yet they always make the time to check everything is OK with your order. Well done people, you’re a credit to the Bay Horse Inn. The Inn offers tables in and around the bar area, alternatively they also have a dining area separate to the bar which offers a more formal eating experience. We chose to eat in the bar however. Although the obligatory fruit machine and jukebox have found their way into this establishment, they’re not obtrusive in any way. The menu offers several starters, mains and desserts as well as the specials. This is the type of place one expects home cooked food, and generally you won’t be disappointed. Our king prawns in Tempura batter starter was, disappointingly, straight from a frozen food supplier. Two of the other fish dishes were unavailable, namely the monkfish special starter, and a salmon main, which was a shame as we hadn't been advised by the waiting staff that these were off the menu. Our mains were the Haggis, neeps and tatties with a whisky sauce beer battered haddock and chips. Again these were absolutely fine, served piping hot, great portion sizes, but i'd definitely question the fish we'd been told was haddock as it very definitely wasn't. The menu pricing structure is as you would expect. We paid approx.£53 for 2 on a three course dinner with drinks. The desserts we chose was a raspberry pavlova, and again was a disappointment. The meringue was home-made, however is there really any need in this day and age to be using cream from a can? All in all, if you’re in the area I’d give this place a chance and hope that on this visit it was just an off day for the kitchen staff.

We visited on Sunday 1st March for Sunday Lunch, 4 adults and 1 x 5 year old. We hadn't booked, but were accommodated easily and made welcome even though the restaurant area was quite busy. Seated straight away, we opted for the Sunday Lunch Carvery with a choice of either beef or ham. It would have been nice to have a greater choice, but in Winter with mostly locals dining, it's understandable that choices might be minimal.Tables were nicely laid out and we didn't feel cramped. the room was fairly small and the carvery counter was probably the smallest I have seen. That said, the system worked, with the chef carving and plating a decent serving of meat and the usual self-service arrangement for Yorkshire Puddings, potatoes, both roast and boiled and a range of 4 vegetables - nicely cooked, not mushy but not too hard. All the food was kept hot and the smallish containers were kept well topped up by attentive kitchen staff. I always hate it when the food seems to stay there for hours - that certainly wasn't the case here. All the usual accompaniments - horseradish, apple, mint sauce etc. Lovely meaty gravy too!The plates were big, so would accommodate those with the largest appetites without needing to go back for more and risk being seen as a greedy person. Service was good and everyone we met was polite and helpful. Because the little one doesn't have a great appetite, we asked for just a plate for him so that we could give him some of ours. They were fine with that, which was nice, as lots of places charge you for a full child's portion even if they eat like a sparrow.Price paid for 4 Carvery dinners plus a round of drinks for 5 came to around £50 and we felt that was good value. We certainly didn't need to eat again that day.Although the pub is right by the busy A68, there is an off road car park area and an enclosed play area with the kids, which we know to be popular and well-used in the summer, with tables outside so that parents can keep an eye on the sprogs whilst enjoying their drink.Inside, the pub is pretty traditional - a bit tired looking, but OK. There is a large U shaped bar with TV (which was showing football, but with the sound turned down which was fine) and a pool table, but plenty of space to find a table to sit and watch the world go by. Although we ate in the restaurant, there was an option to sit in the bar if that's what you prefer. This was an archetypal traditional Great British Sunday Carvery experience and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We would recommend it and will certainly return.

I had the steak and ale pie, it was 100% meat and the steak was really tasty but it was lacking on the ale side which resulted in slightly dry pie. Also a puff pasty top is always disappointing to me... I like a proper pie! The chips were okay. The ale selection wasn't great... No local beers.

we stopped off yesterday on our way home after a busy day out with the kids. We chose pizza , it said homemade and we expected nice fresh dough, tasty and spicey toppings and lots of mozzarella. It took quite a while and we were disappointed for the price. The base was just like you buy from a supermarket rock hard and dry, The meatballs were swedish ones scattered amongst a few chillies and orange cheese on top. It was very plastic, what a kid would make. The kids had a margariita which was small and had sliced tomatoes on top which the kids didn't like so i had to scrape them off the top. We also got a garlic bread and it was very dry and tasteless. A waste of money and we ended up going home hungry. We'll not be returning again there anytime soon.

I visited with my elderly Mum ,and husband for Sunday Carvery on 18th May,what a disappointment. After booking a table in the restaurant after a discussion with a helpful friendly woman, prior to our visit, when we arrived after a 50 mile round trip to find no table reservation waiting. It was later explained that a man with walking difficulties had sat there & there was 'no shifting him !' I should mention my Mum is 86.We had reserved a table and they just let it go!! I have never experienced this before! The restaurant was full, so we sat in the stuffy Marquee which was very hot. Another guest opened the door to allow air in.Our table was wonky so my husband used paper to prevent it from rocking about. We had to ask for serviettes and cutlery to eat our starters with. The service was sloppy and my husband went in search of someone to clean our plates away, before we could start on the Carvery. The Carvery was unattended generally,as the chef kept disappearing. The whole place was disorganised and when I asked to see a manager I was told no one was available. I did complain and was given a small reduction to the bill. An un enjoyable experience which we will not be repeating.

As one of our favourite pubs for Sunday lunch we were sooo disappointed yesterday, my previous review was all 5s for the lovely warm welcome and busy cosy atmosphere. Yesterday it was like a ghost town, virtually empty, no sign of the usual friendly barmaid, a couple of men propping up the bar and no one sitting in the bar eating, we had to check to see if they were still serving food, which they were, and only one couple eating in the marquee. Our meal as ever perfect, (still a 5) along with the friendly banter as we were served our food. Unfortunately as much as the guys at the bar were friendly and spoke to us as we came in, the atmosphere was dead. Such a shame.

the food was excellent and really fresh. We would recommend the fish platter as a starter, whilst the trout, pig on a plate and steak pie as main courses were all excellent. The only slightly disappointing part was the desserts which didn't quite match the rest of the meal. Don't be put off by the tired appearance of the pub, the staff were very friendly whilst the portions could never be considered small.

Having always meant to stop here as we pass quite frequently, we took friends there for lunch. Despite being there before 12:45, two of the main special dishes were already finished, which was disappointing, especially as they were still advertised. The substitute dishes that we had were not particularly good, just average and so it was not the delicious meal that we had been expecting. The prices were quite high. On a positive note, the service was friendly and efficient and the bar has lots of atmosphere, just a shame about the food.

the menu looks promising but in hindsight there was probably too much on it for the quality to be any good. We are mystified by the excellent reviews. We chose this place as it was highly recommend on trip advisor but turned out to be one of the worst meals we have had in a very long time. The shredded pork and pineapple was unmistakaby uncle ben's and the whitebait should really just have been used as bait. Didn't realise the double burger actually meant twice cremated. It could have been used in a hockey game. The crab salad had obviously been pre prepared and in the fridge for some time. I couldn't eat it. Absolutely vile. The place is obviously a popular local drinking place so don't sit in the pub to eat as it's VERY loud. The meal was also expensive. The staff are friendly but unfortunately this does not make up for the extremely poor food. Just very glad we weren't staying here. The owners obviously do well from this place but should be ashamed of serving such rubbish.

I’m so sad to see this lovely place closed. It had great staff and atmosphere and a fantastically good smoked haddock chowder. Our introduction to this country pub was to a spacious, comfortable, immaculately clean bedroom, with stunning views of the fells. Next dinner and cooking of Michelin quality. A highlight was the scallop with belly pork, a brilliant dish. Next morning breakfast, again flawless in every respect from the service to the produce. Any prospective dining pub owner/chef should come here to see how it's done.

My partner & I came here on Sunday for a spot of lunch we both had Fish & Chips ( I had salad with mine instead of chips) I have to say the fish was amazing I would say 100 times better than you would get at a fish shop. The batter was so light & crispy and the fish tasted so good. The staff made us feel so welcome happy smiling faces and we did not have to wait long before our food came I would whole heartily recommend plants plus for lunch
