We visited brightlingsea today. On arrival we went straight to get lunch. Food was a good price and delicious. We had loaded fries and panini and my son had sausage and chips. We later returned and brought buckets and spades, bait for crabbing, more drinks and ice creams throughout the day. After regularly using them throughout day for refreshments we asked if we could have some boiled water to fill a flask for my 5 week old baby for his bottle and they charged us for boiled water! This I feel is disgusting. The café was heaving all day and they must of made a killing but to charge for boiled water has angered me and truly made me think twice about using this café again as I think that is greedy.

Lovely location down by the water but operating out of a caravan at the moment while building work on a new complex grinds on - seems to have been going on for a very long time, and it's not an attractive addition to the beach scene at the moment. Fingers crossed that the project will be completed soon, but never got to check out what's on offer as opening hours seemed a little erratic when we visited out of peak season.

Visited here a few days ago, I ordered a sausage baguette and I was shocked at the quality of the sausages. They seemed that of a really cheap sausage, they had a mash potato consistency and not a very good look of quality either. The price I paid was £3 I would have rather paid slightly more for a better quality sausage, I’d hate to think what the pork content was. My partner ordered a burger, I think this was the cheapest thinest burger he’d ever had, apart from that, it was all the fatty hard bits of gristle that finished him off! I asked for a latte, that they advertised, i think they thought I wouldn’t recognised that they gave me a normal coffee and not a latte like I had ordered. Please don’t advertise lattes if you don’t actually serve them. It might be more helpful to let the customer know that you don’t have any, instead of just serving up a watery disgusting normal coffee! Perhaps the lack in quality and the cheaper food item option is in preparation on saving funds to pay for the new build that’s happening, but this lack of food quality has defiantly put us off visiting in the future. Such a shame as the kids loved their ice cream,

On January 1st my wife and I went out looking for some where to have a coffee.Where ever we went normal places were closed.I knew of one place that was sure to be open.Bateman's cafe. Brightlingsea. Sure enough not only were they open it was packed(As usual). The staff were so efficient and pleasant it didn't take long to get our coffee and scone and cream which was delicious. The cooked food coming out of the kitchen also looked very appetising. The prices were also very reasonable. This place is unique in that it has very little indoor seating.Outdoor seating has perspex round to protect from the wind. This place opens no matter what the weather and you have to dress for the weather. You can be sure of a welcome and as such very popular. I have heard that the only day they close is Christmas day. Well worth a visit. It is a pity there are not more like them.

Had a regular cooked English breakfast there after an early start birdwatching just along the track from the cafe. It was amazing value, under £5 and as well as the expected options there was fried bread and bread and butter and a mug of tea. It was so pleasant and friendly we went back in the afternoon before leaving Brightlingsea and had another cuppa and a chunk of bread pudding for £2.50. Amazing and proper , decent mug of tea and bread pudding like my mum used to make to boot! I understand it may be refurbished soon so go now and I hope the service, prices and quality don't change much! Dave

Today I visited Bateman’s with my family. In fact we visited it twice. This is the first time my wife and I have visited this part of the coast; however my son and his family have have been before. The cafe is located at the end of the Promenade Way Car Park. There is a charge for the car park, although there was no charge on the day we visited. After parking the car we were desperate for a tea before doing some crab fishing. We sat down in the seats at the front of the cafe and got our drinks. The view of the estuary from the cafe was great, to be honest I could have sat there all day just watching the world go by. I immediately noticed some great looking cooked breakfasts being delivered to other customers, I then regretted having my breakfast at home as I could have easily had the cafe big breakfast - oh well next time. There were not that many seats so you may need to wait before getting a table, although some people sat on the promenade wall. There are no toilets in the cafe; however there are some toilets in the car park. On looking at the prices for the food we thought how reasonably priced the food was - I suppose this was one reason that the cafe was so busy. After our tea we decided it was time to catch some crabs - my son had purchased some some crab lines and bucket from the cafe when he last visited, which was also well priced. We walked along the promenade and found a great place for our grandchildren to catch crabs. After an exhaustive time trying to stop our crabs escaping from the bucket (I didn’t realise they could run so fast) and our grandchildren chasing them back into the sea we were definitely in need of another drink and food, so we’d walked back to Bateman’s. We were lucky to find a table immediately. We ordered our food which turned up after a short time. My wife and I had a panini which was really nice - it came with some salad and coleslaw, which was a nice touch. My grandson soon finished off a bowl of chips! Again the food that was coming out of the kitchen was lovely. In summary, do not be put off by the building which is not that fancy, but it really matches the beach huts along the promenade. The staff are very friendly and the food is really good and very well priced. The views of the sea and the boats sailing by is really relaxing. This is a great little cafe for your quick snack.

Our first visit to this seaside cafe and we were very happily surprised by what we found. It is situated in a lovely spot right on the shore line at the end of Promenade Way with a Car Park and Toilets nearby. The choice of food is exceptional for a smallish cafe, we ordered three different lunches - scampi & chips, panini & portion of chips and jacket potato with prawns plus a sausage for the dog! All came to the table very quickly and was cooked to perfection. A must was the Kellys ice-cream for dessert...what a choice of flavours! Needless to say it was all enjoyed by all, even down to the small tub of ice-cream for the dog!! It really is excellent value for money paid. The staff were friendly, obliging and efficient. It is impossible to fault this cafe and as we live fairly local (Clacton) we will be back before long to sample more tasty treats. We wish we hadn't waited so long to make our first visit.

Sucks are cheap, coffee £1! And lovely ice creams and lollies. Kids we'll love it. Can also buy lots of beach and crabbing equipment and cheap souvenirs. Won't leave you out of pocket on a family day out. Recommended. Lovely location.

Visited here on a freezing March morning with sleet in the air and sat indoors, went back next day with the sun out and sat outside. Great Little cafe right by the sea serving great basic food like toasties , cooked breakfasts and bacon and egg baps. All served quickly and at a great price. Staff friendly too. Well worth a visit for a coffee or breakfast.

We ate there for a birthday lunch, you can't book but arrive early and you can choose your seat. The outside tables (yes, really, on a windy February day) are the picnic bench style but you can borrow blankets and cushions to sit on and wrap yourself in. The food is good, cooked to order and speedily delivered to your table. The coffee is excellent and to your liking and the tea is good and hot (but if you sit outside you will need to drink it quickly) As other reviewers have said the staff are all lovely and friendly and the views are seaside as expected. There are two tables inside but these seem to be a little gloomy and as there are no windows they have little or no view.Prices are good and the selection is wide ranging with plenty of non-meat food for vegetarians too. They are open every day I think but will close if the weather becomes bad and there are no people about. There is the children's paddling pool just outside and rocky pools at the appropriate times of the tide. The walks are along a disused railway track alongside the sea or along the prom to the sailing club and into town.

I'm always popping into to Lisa's Cafe at Bateman's Tower for the odd bacon sarnie or a burger. This little cafe is open 364 days a year and gets a myriad of visitors - it really does cater for all. The menu is basic, but very varied and even in the depths of winter it's a busy place. They even keep on selling the ice cream though it might be 5 degrees outside. I wanted a hot blackcurrant yesterday; they hadn't got that, but were obliging enough to heat up a Fruit Shoot - this is typical, nothing is too much trouble. Lovely view here, considerately enhanced by the Perspex windshield.....oooh and a rug for your knees if it's very nippy. Great fun to go there, you will always get a conversation and if you happen to be a grumpy s*d at least you've got the seaside to enjoy.

Great location , right on the beach, not much room inside but tables out side as well with a large glass screening to take the bite out of the wind, perfect stop on a bright and sharp winter day for a hand warming cup of tea and bacon sandwich. Food is as you expect burgers and fried hot plate food but cooked fresh and good value .

I love going to Batemans tower cafe every summer for an Ice cream and food! However this summer I noticed there was a lack of food given considering the prices... I was given a very small portion of chips for the price, when you can get triple the amount at Johnny Mac's plaice for under that! Love the place but they need to be more generous with the portions!

Tend to wander up to the cafe a couple of times a week. It is a good place to get out of the wind and take a break with a coffee and a hot sandwich or burger. Open even in the winter. Great views out to sea past the tower.

After a long walk along the waterfront we were more than ready for a bite to eat and some drinks, and this lovely cafe fitted the bill perfectly. They had a surprisingly large selection on the menu, but I opted for the cheese and onion chutney pannini (with side salad) while my companion had the cheese and tuna pannini. I had a regular coffee and my friend had a cup of tea (he asked for a latte but apparently the coffee machine was broken). It's not what you'd call 'fine dining' but it was tasty and filling, and at only £9 you can't really complain.Staff were extremely friendly and obliging and the onion chutney was delicious!Seating is outside, which provides great views but can get a little breezy, although we were very lucky with the weather. There is a sheltered seating area on one side which has a clear wind-break to protect you from the elements.Later on in the day, after more walking, we popped back to treat ourselves to some of the delicious ice creams (spoilt for choice with those).

The kind of cafe that really does everything you might fancy. The usual lovely cuppa, cooked brekkies, baps, jackets, not to mention kids' meals served in buckets with a spade. All very reasonably priced. Lovely setting near Bateman's Tower on the prom. Had a great brunch, a breezy walk, followed by one of their ice creams. We'll be back!

I visited this gem of a cafe on the quiet end of Clacton seafront for breakfast this morning and I will definitely be back. Located right overlooking a beautiful beach this family run cafe deserves every one of the five stars I have given it. Spotlessly clean, with welcoming courteous staff and great all day menu of breakfasts and traditional family cafe meals. What more can you ask for? Good value and quality products and yes you’ll get them too! Popular with locals and visitors to the area alike a lot to enjoy about the Greensward Cafe!! Oh and it has a great crazy golf to enjoy as well, perhaps when the weather is a bit better! An absolute credit to the proprietor and team - visit and enjoy a real seaside treat !!!
