We were here for a family afternoon tea while on a weekend trip to the area. What a lovely time we had. Attentive staff and wonderful food in a classy setting. The savouries were particularly tasty and lots of them. We only managed 1 cake each and had to get the rest boxed away with us. Only small criticism is that it would be good to have a range of teas for selection but otherwise it was first class.

5 of us visited for drinks during the afternoon and it wasn’t a great experience. The first round of drinks took time but came and were fine. However, the second round took 30 minutes to arrive (the bar had maybe 8 other people in so not busy). When the drinks did finally arrive (pornstar martinis) there was no shot of Prosecco as they had run out of shot glasses 😂 the dirty glasses sat on the bar and I had to ask for the Prosecco about 10 minutes after getting the rest of the drink and there was no apology for this. Overall, the service was poor (albeit friendly) and we wouldn’t come again.

Visited Barton’s yard with freinds on the 25th for drinks and some food, the restaurant next door was too full for us to be seated however a very kind lady from the host desk directed us just next door, this made a change from the usual being turned away altogether! The young lad serving us helped with setting up the table from a two to a four to let us sit next to the fire, well done as we was close to walking out, now although the drinks are a little pricey, they was brought to the table in good time, and there isn’t anything I can fault with the service, uniform looking fresh and such lovely lighting, the music was also a great setting for a night with freinds! Wonderful little spot if you want a quiet drink and great atmosphere, got a little busy but we will defiantly be back for these reasons alone. MD

Attended the first wine tasting night at Bartons yard last night... Exceptional!!! The event was hosted perfectly, the wines were delicious and the food was sensational... Taken through a menu of Red, White and Rose with accompanying food courses, it was a perfect nightout. The guys from Majestic Wines were very informative and didn't put any pressure on you to buy any of the delicious wines that we sampled. First Class, can't wait until the next one!

Hi After our recent disappointing afternoon tea at Rickerby Retreat 🥺 we had a lovely experience here. The afternoon tea was superb and the waiter and (pregnant) waitress were lovely. Nothing was too much bother, they were both attentive whilst not being over baring. The tea it’s self was excellent with a mix of sandwiches, excellent scotch eggs, sausage rolls and cakes all served with a smile ☺️ I would have no problem recommending this as a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Love this venue and have eaten here a few times before. Booked Barton’s Yard for a meal but were told on the phone they’re trying to move things over to Penny Blue. But did reserve a table in Barton’s Yard. Gorgeous place with a lovely atmosphere in both sides. However this time the meal was very disappointing. My husband ordered lamb and although he wasn’t asked how he’d like it cooked he did say ‘and can I have it well done please’. To no reply from the waiter. It came out quite pink. I ordered the £27 steak. It didn’t say what cut but at this price I excepted top quality. I asked for it medium but it came more rare. It was also an extremely fatty steak. Not at all tasteful. We were asked how it was when we’d decided to finish and we did say it was just ok. The waiter didn’t question why? So we didn’t make a fuss. I’m hoping this was a one off as I love to eat here.

Called in and saw the menu for the Penny Blue. Told that they did not serve from this menu and was shown a real cut down menu. Ordered from the restricted menu. Food was poor. I had fish and chips; definitely not fresh. Batter too thick and there was not enough pea puree. Super food salad was not as described in the menu and the Katsu chicken was over cooked. Those serving were polite but no one came to check if our meals were ok or not. Overall... Poor and there are other venues very near that will offer comparable food for lower prices and higher quality.

I’ve had some amazing meals here so it’s a shame about this one. The same kitchen now provides food to the restaurant next door so it was a small lunch menu (4 items only) or bigger menu next door. My friend had the fish & chips: the batter was thick & brittle, she had to remove it in the end and the chips were greasy. I had the chicken katsu which I’ve had before but this wasn’t as nice, the chicken was a little dry and the curry sauce wasn’t great. Hope they’re back on track soon.

Had breakfast here whilst staying at The Halston Hotel. The hotel is on a "room only" basis but guests are welcome to bring food in / cook their own in the facilities provided.Staff at Barton's Yard could not be more helpful, pleasant and polite. We had the full cooked breakfast but asked if they could omit the black pudding. We were asked if we would like something else so opted for more mushrooms / tomatoes. The scrambled eggs were very good and the poached egg was cooked to perfection (in water, not dry cooked in a poacher). The eggs Benedict are also highly recommended. Only niggle - we were asked whether we would prefer tea or coffee with our breakfasts so assumed that a drink was included, not the case. Meals are cooked to order so there is a fair wait at busy times, worth it.

we are here recently, 10 of us in total, the restaurant asked us to pre-order our food prior to our booking so you would think the food would be served on time!!! One starter had been completely forgotten about, it finally came out when everyone else had long finished their starters so it was refused by the person who had ordered it, waitress gave a half hearted apology. When the main courses arrived 2 lamb dishes were served stone cold, one of which was sent back by the person in our group only to be told by the waiting staff that's how it's to be served !!! The other person actually said she didn't mind cold food so carried on eating hers, another person's main meal had been forgotten(which was mine), I ordered the same as my husband, his was brought out on time whereas mine was actually 25 mins late by which time most of the other diners had almost finished their meals. Again not much of an apology offered. Apart from the 2 cold lamb dishes the rest of the food was actually Ok. I have to say the service and attitude by the staff was absolutely shocking, you would think at the very least the restaurant would offer a free drink to those who were affected or a bottle of wine for the table, especially as we had pre ordered the food more than 24 hours prior to dining. Not good !!!

Firstly, fantastically decorated and very polite staff. But everything was on go slow. Really slow. Made the mistake of ordering coffee and with those oversized coffee machines it just took too long. As did the food. There was only two of us and maybe two others in. Ordered poached eggs and salmon, (eggs cooked perfectly) and a mushroom omelette- not great. Mushrooms were dried out, like it had been kept under a heat lamp for too long. We'd finished drinks before the food arrived but we're reluctant to order more because of the time frame required. Have to say the serving staff seemed to be well trained, polite and helpful. I'll probably go back and try again!

Recently visited (10.5.17)Not the first time i have eaten in Barton's, However, it was the standout visit. Not to say that the previous visits have been poor, far from it, the service and food are consistently excellent. The 'Steak Night' offer is £25 per couple and entitles you to two full main courses with choices of sides, and an accompanying glass of wine. Some may think this kind of offer would lead to an average cut of steak and a cheap wine, but, on the contrary, the steak was perfectly cooked and wine was delicious. As a local, i'd go as far to say that you'd be very hard pushed to find a better steak and offer in the City. Would highly recommend.

We were told that we would still have to pay full price for that person (even though we had paid a deposit), as they had already make the food. Been here 4/5 times and it's always been a mediocre place, but decorated to look nice. The service on a couple of occasions has been appalling, and the place has been empty! On one occasion the two members of staff at the bar couldn't have been less interested in serving us, and were more bothered about getting ID off young girls (which I understand is the law to do so), but serving them regardless of whether they had it or not. If you have a 25 policy, stick to it.I, along with my group of friends were so annoyed at the slow service and the ignorance of the staff when we were EVENTUALLY served, as 'he' continued to cockily strut around like he owned the place (it's only a little bar in the middle of Carlisle!). We all left and went to the last zebra around the corner which was excellent. Think your staff need a briefing on how to properly ID individuals, make people feel welcome and serve drinks, and not strut around when their school friends are there trying to ply themselves with alcohol.

My friend bought me afternoon tea for a Christmas present at The Halston and it was utterly amazing! I've been gluten intolerant for 2-3 years and have never had afternoon tea in that time because I just thought there would be nothing for me to eat at all and it would be pointless. And then I had afternoon tea here, it was absolutely fantastic! The sandwiches, cakes and even scones were to die for, (I've never eaten a good scone in the past 2-3 years even from my own baking of them, but somehow The Halston managed to make amazing ones!) It seriously was one of the best experiences I've had, with unique tasty culinary takes on different cakes and goodies. I honestly can't fault it one bit. I also want to point out we also had fantastic service from all the staff members, they were extremely helpful and so lovely, (especially from Liv serving us)! I'd recommend it to everyone and anyone, I've never had a bad experience here from afternoon tea, to Sunday brunches, to lunch and dinner. We were told that they had a large party in another room. Presumably they got their dinner in a timely manner. Bill came without any of the food on it. This was pointed out to staff and corrected. Unimpressed, you are either a bar or a restaurant. If a restaurant then don't allow drinkers, however as a frequent visitor to the bar when there are no diners I feel hugely agreived that you refuse to serve regulars as you have diners. You have 8 tables adjacent to a bar! In a town with a great deal of competition the food (yes have eaten here is average) as a bar hour service stinks and you treat regulars with contempt.

I couldn't rate this place more. After informing the staff that we had a train to catch and were struggling for time they offered us drinks at the bar. Whilst ordering we were offered a private dining room before the start of evening service to allow us to eat in time, this was only the beginning of the excellence. All starters and mains were served piping hot and quickly looking incredibly beautiful. The starters were delicious and the mains even better. Whilst my family had roast dinners and enjoyed them I had tapas that had to be the best food I've eaten in a restaurant in a long time. The service was excellent with all the staff doing everything possible to accommodate our needs, couldn't have asked for a now perfect evening with the only upsetting thing being no room for desert. First class food and service. Will definitely be back.

Have visited this venue many times and up until now it was always my first choice when visiting Carlisle. However I have to say I was extremely disappointed with my latest experience. We came for Sunday lunch to begin with the manager/owner was around so no problems until he left. The food was ok the prawns for starter were tasty: presentation not as good as the last time I had them. The main was mediocre, I had the roast chicken it was totally over cooked and very dry. I did let the waitress to be told they would let the kitchen know, great but I've still got over cooked, dry chicken. I would have overlooked this everyone makes mistakes if it hadn't been for the service. Six customers in total, four members of staff. All far too busy talking behind the bar. We waited for each course to be cleared. Our mains being the worst about ten minutes with empty plates and a baby desperately trying to grab them. The table opposite had exactly the same issues. Needless to say we didn't have dessert. I went to the bar to ask for the bill as by this point I'd had enough of waiting, drinks missed off so had to wait again whilst they adjusted the bill. The other table had no drinks on there bill and had to tell the guy what they had. I understand if it's busy but six customers! To end to all we asked for our parking ticket to be validated for free parking as advertised the person on reception had no idea about it!Come on Barton court your better than this I'm hoping it was because the place was closing for refurbishment at six and the staff were having a party that night. All we really heard them discuss. I will return and hope this was a bad one off experience.

We visited on Dec 30th before dinner. As we were celebrating a birthday I ordered Champagne. I was presented with champagne in glasses that were still very hot from the wash. When I asked the barman his reply was "I doesn't see a problem". Nice place but your staff need educating.

Love the afternoon tea here but sadly was left disappointed with the 3 course Christmas meal! Majority of our mains weren't very hot and the starters weren't great.

Last night we ate at Bartons Yard in the Halston hotel. The menu was good and the food was excellent. There were plenty of choices for each course and each one was well cooked and beautifully presented. The staff were very good and went out of their way to be helpful.

Had breakfast here as it was the only place aside from Weatherspoons open before half 10... Wish we'd gone to Spoons. Slow service, stodgy pancakes, bacon not cooked properly, missed the syrup off the pancakes. No one asked if the food was OK, plates weren't cleared despite us having finished for ages... All this with only 2 other tables in! Place looks posh, food and service massively disappoints.

As I've already written a somewhat longer review of our stay at The Halston, I'll keep this brief. Barton's Yard functions as The Halston's bar and restaurant. We enjoyed an excellent full English breakfast there, freshly cooked using fine ingredients. Indeed, the black pudding was the best I've tasted in years.Surroundings were very pleasant and service faultlessly excellent. Even the tea was delicious, and served in a decent-sized pot. It was a pleasure to eat there.

If a little small Barton's yard provides quality in terms of its lovely furnishings to the excellent staff and the food is very good if a little pricey but is worth a visit

Called with a group of friends last night for dinner, it was really busy and we had to wait approx 45 minutes for our meals to arrive, but when they did we realised that it was worth waiting for. Even our desserts were great, the only down side was that they must have been standing for a while before they reached the table as the ice-cream had melted on our plates, but apart from that everything was perfect and we put the delays down to it being busy. We will go back again.

I visited Barton's Yard with a friend to celebrate my birthday. We ordered tapas, four different dishes and they were all delicious. Everything was beautifully presented and two or three dishes each is enough for a substantial lunch. The staff were also attentive and friendly.

Treated wife to a meal before a cinema visit. It was late Sunday afternoon, met by hotel manager who said there was a table available. Lovely clean restaurant and ambience. Nice décor. Young staff made us feel welcome and took our order which came well prepared, hot and plenty of it.

I was invited for an afternoon tea at the Halston, and what an afternoon tea one of the best. My cousin who regularly gets an afternoon tea voucher for Xmas asks me every year, and we have been to some lovely places, but this was superb. Complimented by a very nice waiter (should have got his name) for whom nothing was to much trouble.Would definitely go there again and will also spread the word.

Came for a birthday meal and was really impressed with the tapas. We a tapas platter each so 3 tapas pieces each and we could not fault any of them. Strongly recommend the monkfish scampi and the steak and chorizo slices.

Visited recently on a week day evening. Greeted by very pleasant staff and shown to our table. Drinks order was quickly taken and received. The food arrived in good time and was presented fantastically and tasted just as good as it looked. A very pleasant evening.

We went there for our anniversary meal as my wife has experienced the place previously and loved it. From her description I expected quiet dining in lovely surroundings. Well we got the surroundings but quiet it was not. This put a downer on the meal as we couldn't chat due to 2 rowdy drinkers at the bar. This spoilt it and all I wanted to do was eat up and leave. I'm sure the bar manager could have taken some action but that is up to him/her. The food and service was absolutely brilliant though.

We booked a table for 7.30 for four people. When we arrived the place was heaving with people standing at the bar . A television was showing the Olympics. music was blaring and the atmosphere was such that we could not contemplate eating there. We cancelled our reservation and went to eat elsewhere. We were very disappointed as we had been looking forward to introducing our friends to Bartons Yard. The place is too small for the mixture of noisy drinkers and fine dining.

Been here forBreakfast a few times but TripAdvisor card left with bill prompted me to review.I had the The William Barton which is their version of a full English. As usual the food on the plate was tasty and well presented. I especially liked the little pan of beans with a tangy taste. My wife had the Grenola -see picture - and a croissant. A very enjoyable breakfast complimented by two excellent cups of de-Caffeinated coffee. All for just under £18.00Service was very good and with a smile. All in all a nice start to the day in nice comfortable surroundings.

This is the second time my husband and I have been to Bartons yard. The first visit we had the Sunday roast, it was probably the best roast we've ever had in Carlisle. This visit we decided to try the tapas. It was £13:95 for 3 dishes. My husband had the king prawns in Thai curry sauce, monk fish and black pudding bites. I had the steak and chorizo, haggis Bon bons and goats cheese. The food was more than enough, we both struggled to finish our food and couldn't fit in a desert. The flavours of all the mains is exceptional and the wine was very well put which was recommended by the waiter. This is a fantastic place to eat! One of our favourite in Carlisle!

Visited Saturday night with friends seeking refuge from the carnage that can be Carlisle on Saturday nights! The bar is very smart and staff are friendly and welcoming. We were not originally intending to eat but we ordered various dishes from the menu and all were very good indeed. Standouts for me were the "pickled" onion rings, sweet potato wedges and the best chips I have eaten in years. Crispy on the outside, well seasoned and soft and fluffy on the inside. The cocktails were the real star of the night. No huge pitchers of sickly sweet alcopops here just properly made delicious grown up drinks. I started with the Lemon Bonbon which was fantastic but I had the BEST Bloody Mary I have ever been served in my life. The bar tender came over and asked how spicy I like my Bloody Mary and he made it exactly to my taste. Honestly it was wonderful. Friends also ordered the Rosemary Gimlet and they said these were wonderful too. Will most definitely be returning here soon.

Set in a beautiful historic building in the centre of the town this is a great Hub for a breakfast/lunch/drinks . We just had a quick breakfast snack with a great authentic cappuccino. Friendly staff . Outside seating is available if the weather permits.

It's a nice little restaurant and staff were lovely. Started out great with haggis bon bons which were delicious however there were several things not on the menu (early on the Saturday evening) and the other things we did have were bland, greasy and really disappointing.
