Can't recommend this place more. Me and my partner came this evening for dinner. We have shared 5 of the small plates together. The food was amazing, massive compliments to the chef. I asked and it was Simon who was cooking for us tonight. The atmosphere and service from the front of house encompassed everything I hoped for and more. Make this a stop next time your thinking of where to go for something to eat.

I was worried whether it was scam or overated. But from the customer service, especially super kind Japanese server, to the quality of food and the price, everything was good. Nice vibe, lovely staff, solid prices for the area, food was what you'd expect. Not going to wow you, but when you're looking for a cosy place to get a drink hiding from the rain it'll tick that box!

I have noticed Cory has helped lodes with seething with the older crowd and has helped massively with placing me and my large group of friend in suitable seating. Best at table service. Always willing to bring drinks over.

Fantastic pub with a great atmosphere. Staff are very helpful and very friendly ( made our dogs day with the treats they have near the bar) . Food was excellent and a good price in clouding a drink . It will ve our go to pub when in Cambridge. Thanks staff .

Visited with friends whilst touring some other pubs. Service was the worst I’ve ever received, it took ages to get served and it wasn’t even busy. Tables were greasy and dirty. Numerous times we came to the bar and nobody was there. Food was the worst I’ve had in a pub.

Visited on the 16/12 as a party of 4. Service was great and so was the atmosphere. The food however… I think the chef has given up on life. I ordered nachos, and they were DIRE. Chilli Doritos (who does that!!!) and just the tiniest smattering of nacho cheese sauce (I think there were around three small drops of it), a very small amount of sour cream which again was virtually undetectable and a couple of teaspoons of grey avocado - totally unseasoned. They could’ve just given me the pack of Doritos to be honest. They were so dry, I could feel them sucking the moisture out of my body. Didn’t want to complain at the time because it was my husband’s Birthday and I didn’t want to ruin the mood. But anyway, if you can’t do any better, take the nachos of the menu, because they SUCK.

Went to this pub with a couple of friends and the service we received was impeccable, thanks to the understanding staff particularly a memeber called Rachel. She was particularly understanding with one of my friends who has learning difficulties and safe to say we felt very welcomed thus can’t wait to come back !

Didn't have much just a portion of French fries and a Pepsi cola drink , French fries were nicely cooked , bar staff were friendly and nice friendly atmosphere to , possibly another time have a more substantial meal

Never made it for an experience and that’s because they decide after 1 month to cancel our booking for Christmas. Bit frustrating to be honest as it was only 4 days I called up to confirm everything was good and which I was told it was fine. Then today I receive a call to let me know there cancelling my booking as they wouldn’t be able to cater for 15 people. Very poor that they can’t manage their bookings properly. Now I’m left to find somewhere else to book at the start of December when everywhere is basically booked, would have been nice if they could have let me know a month ago when they confirmed my booking. Comes down to poor management and a poor ran pub that they can make such a simple mistake which now ruins it for me and the others who now need to find somewhere which is pretty unlikely.

I don’t usually leave reviews but the service or lack of that we received here was very very poor. We came in here the other day and nobody was behind the bar. We waited 5 minutes and still nobody behind the bar to serve us, even the few customers who were there looked bewildered too. We tried looking for staff but there wasn’t anybody we could find. I could have gone behind the bar my self and nobody would have known. We went somewhere else. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

Generous Portion I am having reviews for all of Cambridge pubs. So the grades and ratings are just temporary, and I will return to adjust after the pub marathon. The rival of this pub is Mitre next door. Similar to the Bath House and Eagle nearby. The food was delivered hot, in generous portions. I thought the burger tasted better than Bryon nearby, despite the fact that Baron of Beef is not burger specialist. It's cheaper and has bigger portions than Bryon too. The vegetables and potatoes of the Sunday roast tasted good, not overdone. Lovely crispy Yorkshire pudding. Nothing we ordered was bland. Looking around other tables, the food that other customers was generous in portions too. The environment was clean. The tables are not too close to each other. Maybe the prices are lower than Mitre next door, but Baron of Beef's food quality and quantity was very impressive.

Brilliant- service, food, decor and ambiance.

The burgers are average, the portions are not big, and the beer is delicious, especially the pumpkin beer.

There are many tap beers that are hard to find in Japan. When I went, there were 13 different beers on tap! The staff was very friendly and gave us some recommended beers! Please stop by when you go to Cambridge ☺️

Great pub in the centre of cambridge. it overlooks st johns college which is stunning. they always have 4-5 ales on which are all differernt. live music on a friday is a great hit!

Came in the other day for a drink, lovely atmosphere and really friendly staff. They had lots of vegetarian options and kindly asked me if i had any allergies. Didn’t get much food but the chips were delicious, 10/10 would come again!! X

Booked a table for 8 for 2nd November by telephone on 10th October 2024, when we got there, they had no record of our booking, so that left us with nothing to eat as everywhere we went to had no tables free for us all. So disappointed, had 2 very hungry children with us too. We were looking forward to celebrating our granddaughters 9th birthday, she was very upset we couldn't eat anywhere and had to return home. (A train and bus journey away)

Baron of Beef exceeded all my expectations! The ambiance was cozy yet elegant, setting the perfect tone for a memorable meal.

Great pint of beer and had food of the festive menu, I had the turkey toastie with roast potatoes with gravy, absolutely amazing, gravy was spot on as was the roast potatoes. My partner had grilled cheese toasties which she throughly enjoyed. Top place for food and drink!!

Ridiculously slow. 2 people at bar and no queue but took a while to get served. The lunch menu outside wasn't on the tables as a menu inside. After a ten minute wait and a remark from a nearby table about waiting times I asked the barman how long the 2: sandwiches we had ordered would be.. apparently a further 30 mins. 40 mins for 2 sandwiches in a not too busy pub is pretty silly. We and the 4 people next to us all left. That's 6 customer's left due to this sorry state of affairs. No doubt someone will reply with a pile of tosh but someone on management needs to look at why 6 customers all left

Very friendly staff good choice of drinks

We ordered two set lunches, and one flat iron steak in late October 2024. For the steak( around 16 quid, around 8 oz as what we were told) we said we would like medium rare when we ordered. But then the steak came in with absolutely medium or medium-well, and the steak was not even hot. We told the waiter, and the waiter was so kind to offer us another steak with medium rare. But yes this time the steak was medium rare but the temperature was kind of only a bit warm. The waiter told us the steaks are halfway pre-cooked in the kitchen and when there’s an order, they re-heat the steak and that’s why. Totally disappointed and not acceptable! We are steak lover, if 10 is full mark I would only rate it 1. We will never try this restaurant again I am afraid.

Quite disappointing really. I had the steak and ale pie which was tasty, but had the sum total of one, yes one, piece of beef in it. Another in our party had the burger which came with onion rings of which there were two onion rings from the smallest part of the onion. Roast chicken on the other hand was fabulous I'm told. Service quite slow.

Really good find, shame we didn't make it back for food. We were really looking forward to eating herr.

A great find on a day trip to Cambridge, I was looking for a decent but not too upmarket pub in a good location and with tables outside for sitting and watching the folks go by. This pub fitted the bill perfectly and I spent a contented hour sipping their very reasonably priced Malbec. Will definitely be visiting again!

Started outside watching the world going by and then inside for a late lunch. Great, genuinely, friendly staff. Throughly recommend.

One of the best pubs in Cambridge. The patrons are always chill. Great music good beer and jenga. If you’re lucky, sometimes the baron pops in to say ello. But seriously, a really nice pub with nice people and ever better beer.

Nice place to have a beer and watch football!

I’ve called in for a pint on many occasions. The Baron has the potential to be a very good pub. Its staff are super-nice and it’s very dog friendly. What’s not to like? Well, the gents toilets for a start. How long has the lock on the cubicle been broken? Months, if not over a year. Likewise the toilet seat. And the door itself is covered in offensive graffiti. They might blame vandalism, but the truth is vandalism begets vandalism unless you have a zero tolerance. Fix the door and the seat, and for goodness sake paint over the graffiti. My wife tells me the women’s toilets are not much better.

Didn't eat, but were thirsty, and so was the dog. Quick service and they also came around with water and treats for the dog. Clean. Happy and enjoyable visit.

We (two married couples) visited the Baron of Beef during our short break in the City of Cambridge. As we had already had lunch earlier, we popped into the pub for drinks only as it looked so inviting. Although we were only short time visitors, we were given a warm, welcoming greeting by the landlord who was very friendly and most hospitable. The pub was very clean, comfortable and had a very pleasant tranquil atmosphere. Although it was to be only a quick visit, we enjoyed the drinks and hospitality so much that we stayed much longer than we had anticipated which was credit to the landlord, friendliness and quality of the fayre on offer. Amazing atmosphere with the live music and made infinitely better by our server Louis, he was very attentive but not to the point it was too much. Very funny too and quite the looker I must say haha. All in all great experience and will be coming back for sure 👍

A very good city pub with decent food, drinks and service. We had the cod and chips (skin removed from the fish before battering - so important!!) and the meatless burger. Both were excellent and served quickly. The Greene King IPA was particularly good I was told. The pub was very quiet but it was early lunchtime on a Tuesday. The app worked perfectly for ordering so that's always a plus. Overall very good and recommended!

Came for lunch with a few friends, we all had different options from the menu and were all really happy with our food. The staff here are lovely and the atmosphere was great too! Going to book coming for dinner soon!

We arrived at 9:00 p.m., the beer was very good, live music, but NO FOOD, and no one explained to us why (was it late?)...

Good old English pub...but toilet!!! Come on!!! Disaster

Lovely lunch on a gorgeous sunny day watching the world go by.

Had a very disappointing lunch here. On a bank holiday Monday there was only one person behind the bar serving a full pub and taking food orders. They said we'd need to wait 30 minutes for food. I ordered a chicken salad which took about 40 minutes to arrive and was delivered without dressing. I asked for dressing and then waited a further 20 minutes before being told that the chef had run out of it and took it upon himself to serve the salad naked without asking the customer if that was OK. I would have had something else if I'd been warned that I'd be receiving a tasteless, dry salad. To the server's credit, they gave me a refund, or there'd be fewer than two stars.

The food is great and the staff are friendly. It's a nice place to pop in and enjoy some food and drinks.

We had a lovely dinner and a few drinks there. There is too little room to move around, it is very busy and as a result the staff just takes ages to get you. Which is not their fault, I mean they are doing an excellent job, but I think they might need a bit more man power.

The reason we booked a table was at the Baron of Beef was because Tom Baker stayed there in 1979. Five of us ordered food, all at the same time. Mine was by far the simplest – Grilled Cheese Toastie. Over the next hour we noticed that, with one exception, food did take a long time coming. However after an hour my friends had either finished, or coming to the end of their meals (fish and chips, chicken BLT and other chicken dishes). I asked at the bar and the barperson went and brought it to me. Now, let me describe the ‘Grilled Cheese Toastie’ from the menu: A medley of mature Cheddar, Gouda and Emmental, with bechamel sauce in a toasted farmhouse loaf’. I wish I took a photo as it was nothing like that. I do not think that was between the bread justifies the word filling. It was a minimal amount of cheese that was frightened of getting anywhere near to the edges of the slices of toast. It was very dry and pretty well tasteless. I think had it arrived in a reasonable time I would have not written this review. Likewise if it did arrive when it did but was as described. I do wish I had the presence of mind to return it to the bar and ask for a refund rather than reviewing here, but it was after over an hour, I was hungry and we needed to move on with our day. It was only after, when I had a chance to digest (excuse the pun) the experience that I felt I had to vent my frustration somehow.

Great building situated on the way to river punt tours location, good drink selection, ample seating inside and out. The price of beer appears to be consistent across central cambridge pubs, charging the same as london prices. During my visit, they were not serving food at all, so do check with staff in the pub before ordering your beer if the kitchen is open that day. It's possible things have changed since my visit.

Excellent lineup of lagers to go with juicy burgers, perfect for a summer afternoon of people watching near the river, what a treat!!! (btw, I mean all of this in a good way!).

Definitely the worst pub I've ever been to in my life. When I arrived, the table was very dirty and with many dishes from the last customers, I asked the waiter if he could clean it, and he told me "that it was a pub, not a restaurant, and that's why it was different". To order a pint, there was a boy at the bar, extremely slow, with no desire to work, causing slow service for everyone. I will never go back.

During our visit to Cambridge, we carefully read the reviews for the BARON OF BEEF and decided to try it for lunch. As we stood in line to place our order, we head comments from other tables that they had run out of the flat iron steak and had no bread for sandwiches which really limited our choices. We had to choose something else which wasn’t our first choice. After waiting over an hour, we were getting irritated by the long wait and asked the bartender to check on our food which finally came out when we asked to see the manager. They cooked our burgers to death (see picture below) All of our food was dry as a bone and just inedible. We asked for our money back and did get a full refund but what a waste of an hour and a half! Save yourself the headache and skip this place!
