This pub is a gem for good quality & authentic Thai & English food. It was our first visit to this village pub attracted by the online menu. We all enjoyed tasty Thai options for around £11.00 & I have my eye on their 8oz Sirloin steak for £16.95 for my next visit which seems terrific value these days (gastro pubs take note). The substantial beer garden was a lovely place to dine & enjoy the Surrey brewed ales in the sunshine of our visit. Parts of pub date back to Tudor times with an interesting history.

We stopped at the Barley Mow for a drink while staying in the area. The kitchen was closed at the time and there were very few customers. I can see that food is the main attraction but the pub could do more to appeal to passing custom, notably by sweeping and tidying the seating area by the entrance.

I have been coming to this pub for a long time to eat the Thai food and to drink excellent Surrey Hills beers. The lunchtime menu is superb value for money. I often have the drunken noodles (pad kee mao) and last time I noticed there were mushrooms in it, which I had never noticed before and which enhanced an already delicious dish. Today I had pad prik with chicken and it was really excellent, spicy and generous quantity. My (Thai) wife enjoyed the chicken with cashew nuts. I am wondering if the chef might have changed because the food seems to have gone up a notch. Nice pub, not cheap for drinks but the beer quality is generally very good. They also do normal pub grub at reasonable prices if you don't fancy Thai. They have a full Thai menu too although that is more expensive and really for the evening. Very friendly service, although she wasn't always keeping an eye out for other customers when she was chatting to us. I note that they put on a service charge although that is not mentioned on the lunch time menu (the full menu does declare it). That doesn't stop me recommending this place with enthusiasm.

My friend ordered a Thai meal and a pint of Pride for lunch. He had high praise for both. I fancied a Red or Green Veggie curry but the Curry options were all meaty. So I opted for fish n chips and a pint of Hogsback Tea. The meal was ok. The pint tasted slightly off and I should have complained and asked for something different. My stomach protested loudly and I had to dash to the Gents. My stomach continued to trouble me through the afternoon. The pub was also rather dark and cold. So...one satisfied and one dissatisfied customer.

Second visit, this time on a Monday lunchtime. Thai lunch menu is full plates - you get rice and a curry. Also noodles and Pad Thai. Around £11 a pop. Very well balanced cooking with fresh ingredients and a decent use of chilli. Best I've had from a High Street style Thai (obviously not in the same bracket as specialist outfits like the magnificent Smoking Goat). Well kept Surrey Hills ales add to the attraction.

The Barley Mow and its kind were once to be found in every village ; you simply walked in or stopped the car and were greeted by a unique part of this country. Welcoming, informal and friendly, one to remember. Always a nice surprise. Most of them are long gone but not here, approaching the slopes of The Surrey Hills ANOB. The Barley Mow sits behind an old weathered chestnut tree looking unassuming under its hipped clay tile roof, chimney stacks et al. You might blink and miss it; please do not. Thanks to Musti' our landlord and his love for the Pub, we are very lucky to have a great local and Proper Pub that we can enjoy every day. The local ales are cellared to a high standard ...." possibly the finest"...etc etc. Ladies at lunch ( and gentlemen too) will enjoy well chosen wines ,not priced to eye watering heights, then to enjoy either good tarditional home cooked pub food or a tasty meal from the Thai lunch special or their full dinner menu. All to be recommended. That will do nicely !

Visited the Thai restaurant which is part of the pub for the first time and we’re not disappointed. The restaurant was busy both with seated customers and people arriving to collect take aways. Staff were obviously rushed off their feet but all took time to be polite and welcoming. The food was some of the best Thai food I’ve had outside of Thailand and portions were generous. Looking forward to a return visit in the not too distant future.

Before I start this review, this is NOT about the Thai restaurant side of this pub, roll on when they find a new venue, as the food is top notch. This review is more about the pub side of the business, and in general the lack of customer service provided by the woman who always works lunchtimes behind the bar.We have visited as a couple and with friends, at least 25 times in the last 12 months, this being for the excellent Thai food, certainly not the grubby pub side of the operation which seriously needs renovation.Today’s trivial incident left us deciding enough is enough and our custom will go elsewhere. We ordered drinks before our meal with one of them being a simple shandy. However the woman put soda water instead of lemonade into the shandy. I asked for it to be changed to be told “well the lemonade must have run out on the pump” but saying she would do another. The drink she brought to the table was the same glass but some tipped out and replaced with lemonade, so obviously now tasting even worse.I changed for a different drink and all was good to the bill came and she had charged for the original disgusting drink. Her explanation was that she had poured it so we had to pay for it!!!Forget the fact that we have eaten here many times, or the fact that it was her error! No arguing with this woman, obviously NOT the owner, as why would £4.30 be more important than repeat and regular customers? The disgraceful service from this woman has never been friendly, but this incident has now convinced us NEVER to visit again, NEVER recommend any friends, and to write this review. The Thai restaurant is the ONLY thing keeping this place going, I think that will not be long unless the customer service skills are reviewed. Some people have the correct attitude to work with customers, others should be in jobs where they never mix with the public. All in all, if you want a Thai, get a takeaway.

Popped in lunchtime after going to pick some plants up nearby. The food has a strong Asian offering, perhaps because one of the kitchen staff was Asian. We stuck to the Pub Lunch menu although we could have eaten from the main menu. I had a ham & cheese omelette with chips and a small salad and my wife had scampi & chips. The food came piping hot and the chips were the big, chunky type. My wife had a glass of white wine and I tried the local Shere Drop beer which was very pleasant. The overall standard was fine but I doubt we would be passing this way again.

If you haven't been to the Thai restaurant at the Barley Mow yet then you are in for a real treat. It serves some of the best Thai food that I have ever eaten anywhere in the world, and I've been to Thailand over 50 times in the last 10 years! The food is truly outstanding, whether you have the duck tamarind or the drunken beef or the lamb masaman or the crispy chicken with cashew nuts. The service is great, with staff who work incredibly hard and will do anything to please you. And in terms of value for money it cannot be beaten. In fact, I think they should charge more, given they have put their prices up since 2012.But don't take my word for all of this, just go along on a Saturday night and see how many people are eating there. And if you do want to eat there, you will have to book in advance as otherwise y will find the restaurant and all tables in the pub fully occupied with people eating this great Thai food. The restaurant is managed by the ever affable Da. We heard about this Thai restaurant and gave it a try today. what a find!Delicious food, we tried the home made fresh starter sharing dish between four, followed by a stir fried crispy chicken, Massaman chicken curry, beef weeping tiger, with plain egg noodles and rice. It was freshly prepared and utterly delicious. In the restaurant, Da, the young woman serving, was extremely kind and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and she made us feel very welcome. She answered all our questions about Thai cuisine with a pleasant friendliness and added considerably to our enjoyment of the meal. The Chilean Sauvignon complemented the Thai flavours admirably, and the whole meal was a very reasonable £63 in total for the four of us.I can't think why I haven't heard about this place before. I will definitely be going back there again in the very near future.

Visited many times and also have had take aways on many occasions. I love their food and could eat it every day. Staff is friendly and attentive. Could not fault it, order a curry and it will come in a chicken shaped ceramic dish :).

3rd time I've been to this place. Food here is always great. Beef drunken and the steak dish are really tasty. One of Horsleys finest.

I have visited the Thai Restaurant at the Barley Mow on a few occasions and have always found the food of a good quality and value for money. Fast friendly service and a good choice of drinks from the bar including Shere Drop, London Pride and Doombar add to an excellent experience. Although the Thai Restaurant part of the Barley Mow only has two desserts (I agree the Coconut Pancakes with Ice Cream are very nice!), you can also order puddings from the more extensive Traditional Menu.I find the comments expressed by 'Lynette A' surprising - I have always found the staff here pleasant and welcoming. Would be happy to recommend to others who enjoy good value Thai food in pleasant surrounds!

Four of us had dinner at this restaurant two weeks ago? Menu very varied, great choice. Arrived in timely fashion, with a smile! Staff kept checking we were Ok throughout meal. Choice of desserts limited, but can recommend the pancakes and ice cream! People in the bar do stare a bit as you enter, but it is obviously very popular with the locals. Get past that and you are in for a meal that is a real treat!

I did not stay long enough to eat or order a drink. The entire bar and bar staff stopped what they were doing and watched myself and my companion enter and take a seat. No welcoming greeting nothing just silence and being stared at as if we were some kind of freak show and I assure you we are not ! We actually left still being openly stared at - I will never ever return and I advise you all to give this place a miss !

We went here after staying at Horsley towers de vere venues just visited after seeing it on google.Got in the pub looks be decieving but it is like a little gem! Thai food served wonderful menu plenty to choose from, was great service plenty with a smile which was nice to see after a long day travelling. The food; ample portions the food nice and fresh , good thai food not overpowering in regards to taste nice and piping hot, in the restaurant there is a small number of tables but it makes it much better (I think anyway) ... I had the stir fry beansprouts, prawn on toast and noodles. Scrummy!! Partner had stir fry crispy chicken sweet and sour couldn't fault it.Pleasant ambiance, great food, good service. Shame we don't live local?! Do give it a go... hopefully you have a great experience like I did aswell!!!! :)

This is a hidden gem. Always delicious food, friendly service and nicely done decor that cleverly blends an oriental feel into the annex (with vaulted ceiling) in this traditional pub. Recommend booking if you're planning to eat on Friday or Saturday night, as it gets busy.

We arrived just after 3 pm on Saturday to be told the kitchen had just closed but they were extremely accommodating and agreed to serve us providing we were happy to have all dishes together. This was no problem for us and we quickly ordered mixed starters, a Penang curry and Duck tamarind and rice. As we were the only ones eating, the service was nice and quick and all dishes were clearly freshly prepared - simply delicious on all fronts. We are avid Thai food addicts and can honestly say this was right up there with the best - especially the Duck which so often is too sweet and oily but in this case had a lovely undercurrent of sour from the tamarind - just how it should be. If you love authentic Thai food - this is a must

Frequently go with friends for lunch at The Barley Mow. In a quiet location between East and West Horsley, has a large and pleasant garden and plenty of parking. Varied menu, either English or Thai, reasonable prices, a comfortable and friendly atmosphere and dog friendly.Wish there were more pubs like this in the local area.

A group of us went to the Barley Mow for an evening of R&R, it is a great combination of friendly traditional pub with a great Thai restaurant. Beers and wines were great, food was terrific - not your typical restaurant Thai, more traditional and authentic.Service is good, even on a busy night and the food is good value for money, if you area and want to get away from the traditional 'Gastro Pub' this is a great alternative where you get all the atmosphere, great beer and wine with the added bonus of terrific Thai food.

What a great find! Lovely traditional pub with good food and great staff. They have their own session beer too. Very nice. Just don't try the car park in anything bigger than a mini!!

I come here regularly on a Saturday lunchtime. The bacon, broe and cranberry hot sandwiches are served all year round and are excellent. I also like the chicken wings. Lots of students, but an older crowd too. There’s always a game on the big screens too. A nice place for a Saturday lunch.
