Most reviews here are way out of date. It is a useful refuge prior to a concert but has no food and limited anything. You are welcome to bring in purchases from the other outlets at Barbican.

They blamed COVID They blamed staffing Time to blame them Out of all ALL (the many arts we support) the Barbican members lounge is bottom of the London barrel finally. Arrived 10 mins before (absurd and variable) opening time and got barked at by RUDE staff lighting tea lights (obviously his skill set is limited to Arson as shortly later the building was evacuated for a fire) then told to wait outside. To add the lounge no longer serves any food, it was always some drama. As it always is... They can't make/won't a cocktail. And the staff are rude and nasty. Do yourself a favour and cross the hall to the FABULOUS newly owned Barbican Bar & Grill!

Got here prior to a show. Very crowded and got just about the last stool in the place. While I was waiting saw people come in look around and then walk out. Situation not helped by the first arrival in a group claiming seats for friends not here yet. It is usually fairly OK here but not so today. Asked for a Martini but they only do the cocktails on the menu. The Members Lounge would be great if moved to one of the disused, much bigger, cinemas.

The Members lounge is a great spot for a sit down before a show. The bar staff were friendly and polite and very good with drinks. I thought the prices reasonable. They don't do coffee They stop doing food at 6.15 but I understand that you can bring food and hot drinks in from the café downstairs. The lounge is pleasant and relaxing and Barbican membership is worth it just for access here. There are gents toilets at the far end and through the door and on the right. Don't know where the nearest ladies is. It is so much better than waiting in the noisy, busy foyer, where sometimes you can't get a seat.

The food is a regularly changing menu of interesting small plates, Always good vegetarian choices and always a decent selection of wines. But there is so much else to like about it too: It is smack in the middle of the city, great for me as it is half way between home and office. It is always less busy than the better city venues which can be heaving. You also don't tend to get the egregious braying city boys in there either, tends to be more the arty types that would go to the Barbican. What I like most about it is that it is one of the few places where you feel equally welcome just to have a glass of wine or to eat - a very European attitude. And a lovely outside terrace in the summer overlooking the lake and fountains.Oh, and the staff are really charming, My favourite staff in any London venue/

We chose the pre-theatre menu, which included a glass of wine and 3 tapas dishes. Not only did we have to wait in-between tapas dishes when they should have all been brought together, 3 different waitresses came to take our order, and they obviously were trying to rush us as they collected the plates before we'd barely finished! The waitress although very nice and friendly admitted it was a big rush before the play started....Not conducive to relaxed dining. Also, when the bill was brought, it showed as nearly £ 90! They made a mistake, which was quickly rectified, but we were reluctant to play £44 for our tiny and substandard meal ( wine wasn't great either). For such a great location, it could do a LOT better in every way. Shall not be going there again.

We visited mid evening, mid week. We had to wait well over five minutes just to be seated. We then had to wait well over 15 minutes to place our order. Seemed that the waiting service was a complete mess. Waiters/waitresses had clearly been on the training course on how not to make eye contact and ignore customers. When we finally got some attention, the waitress said she'd return momentarily to take our order. She didn't. Nor did the next waitress. I eventually got up and went and cornered a waiter to place our order. The food though was of a very good standard.... Except that we later ordered a further small dish.... after 15-20 minutes it still hadn't arrived so we chased... it clearly wasn't being cooked and we asked for our bill and then the dish arrived (the bill had the dish taken off) So, good food, dis-organised service

I visited Barbican Lounge for lunch with my account manager for a business lunch. We were asked if we had visited before, which we hadn't - and advised to order 2-3 dishes to share. The food was speedy and tasty. The only reservation I have is that I like my vegetables and the menu seemed to be lacking good raw vegetable dishes (when I asked what vegetable dishes they had, they suggested an aubergine dip - not quite what I was expecting). My favourite dishes were Pan fried red mullet, pea, mint and blue cheese risotto balls and the Beer battered tiger prawns - don't think you can really go wrong with prawns deep fried in stuff. The cocktails were lovely. The waiter recommended some sort of martini with marmalade. It was OK but I am a savoury gal and don't like sweet stuff too much, my dining partner had a basil martini which I enjoyed FAR more. Well it was nothing a couple of glasses of prosecco wouldn't correct. We were far too full for desserts so skipped that. We happened to visit on a day lots of open university students were graduating which was nice - lots of photos being taken on the terrace. I hope to come back in the summer as the terrace is beautiful - but that I mean it has a nice view and it's always nice to sit somewhere hidden to people watch in the summer, isn't it?

The presentation is excellent too, and there are some unusual touches - sweetcorn panacotta anyone? Delicious! If there is no show on at the Barbican, then it is usually very quiet and soulless - why don't they do special promotions to the thousands of Barbican residents?? The Lounge looks better than it has done for years, (some) great furniture, not over-lit , an has an amazing position . Perfect location, overlooking the fountains and lakes, an international destination for Architecture, Music, Theatre and Art. Amazing sunsets for EC1. I have read that this Level 1 bar / restaurant is to be taken over soon by 'well known London Chef' Thank Heavens! After several visits for concerts / shows I give up until the takeover. Hope that the reincarnation offers more choice and is at least value for money if (even) more expensive. Maybe we were very unlucky - on several visits? Atmosphere was all wrong for a key Arts venue. International stars delivering amazing music downstairs, Euro-Pop in the restaurant, my group felt that we were intruding on a staff leaving party the last time we tried. Don't bother trying to eat in the Barbican Members room either . Overpriced cold snacks in a corridor, over the top service for dips and bread! Only the Level 3 Gin Joint (terrible name, embarrassing) management seem to know or care about what they are doing - at a price. GJ saved by one or two great cocktail makers, just don't look at the vile 'animal skin' bar decor. The Barbican cafes / restaurants overall: A classic example of no ownership or vision by management. The food quality and amount has, on more than one occasion, been insulting. The Barbican Levels 1 and 2 used to be a treat - the ambiance matched the sophisticated architecture and programme. Hoping that the change will be for the better and includes a proper members room, with a view, on the next menu.

And they at least have a loo but my husband was not impressed by the mens .

SO very convenient - but none of us found the food really enjoyable. My husband and I thought the food was anaemic. It's attractively presented but is a disappointment in taste having no clear or interesting flavours. We had the cauliflower starter which was okay but was served with a tasteless white sauce. The houmus was alright but served with bread, and only 4 pieces, and it took too long to get more. The salmon cured in anise and served with a fennel mousse and crisp fennel sounded nice and looked good but again was just too tame and the mousse uninteresting. The shortbread served with it was crisp but had no particular flavour nor the white filling. We tried lots of other dishes but no-one really enjoyed their choices. One of us received his choice of meatballs so late that he did not have time to eat it. So go there if you need to but its nowhere near gourmet. We arrived at 6pm in an almost empty restaurant and ordered wine and starters. our friends arrived by 6.15pm and it filled up suddenly. Everyone else succeeded in departing before us. We took our bill to the till to escape in time.

Food was very nice -we opted for the 6 tapas and two glasses of wine between two of us option, and it was all hot when it arrived and very nice.

We needed a quick bite before the cinema and this was perfect. Service was efficient and the food arrived promptly. We had a selection of ham, bread and tapas dishes to share between 3 of us and there as plenty. A larger portion of bread would have been nice (the plate of ham an salami didn't come with bread included)

We had a really nice meal at the Barbican Lounge, before going to see Antigone on Saturday. The food came very quickly and was really tasty and the service was excellent. Would definitely book again.

We had a lovely pre-concert dinner here. We had done no research beforehand, but we were more than satisfied. The reception and service were prompt, friendly and helpful. The food arrived as it became ready and every single dish was delicious. We had two mains and a side each and we couldn't finish all of it. We would definitely eat here again.

We were attending the Barbican for a dance show and this was our very first visit, we booked the Lounge, we were met warmly, sat prompt and has wonderful food and service. Me and my Daughter love Tapas and it was delicious, between two 5 plates would be plenty. We also loved the Barbican Bornstar Cocktail, that alone would be bring us back! Our waiter was also fab, infact the table next to us were simply rude for no reason and yet he stayed focussed on delivering 100% customer satiscation! We will be back.....

When they say "small plates" they really should mean "tiny plates"! The food itself was OK though the prawns in batter were a bit rubbery due to being overcooked.
The service was also very slow even though it didn't appear to be that busy when we got there. I think the management should consider getting more staff prior to concert/theatre times. We had to keep trying to get the waiter's attention for drinks, etc.
Not bad, but there are areas needed for improvement if we are to go here again to eat.

Having never been to The Barbican we needed somewhere to eat before our 7.30 pm concert and this place proved ideal. The service was very quick, choice on the menu was great for sharing a few small dishes and value was good too. Would definitely return and would love to try the outside terrace in the summer!

The food was tasty, good size portions and came quickly. The only criticism I would have is that there was a pre-theatre set menu, and this was not provided to us. The waiter only gave the full a la carte menu and seemed surprised when I asked if they did not have a pre-theatre one (which I know they did have). I would have expected both to have been offered tous. Other than that - food was lovely.

Nice place, fast service, lovely tapaz type food, in the Barbican so ideal for your pre-theatre meal. A bit more money though than at some other places nearby and might be a bit too close to other diners, enough to hear what they are talking about. But for pre-theatre it is a perfect option.

Service is a bit chaotic (probably due to the fact most of the crowd arrives and leaves at the same time for shows) but there is a very wide choice of delicious tapas. Red Mullet with chorizo ratatouille is very flavoursome, and so it the aubergine cream.

We had a good pre-theatre experience but it would have been improved if the decor were a little warmer and brighter. However, the food and the service were good although we weren't initially offered the pre-theatre menu, which works out cheaper than ordering tapas separately (and includes a glass of wine), and had to ask for it.

A great surprise in the Barbican. I was very short of time as I was waiting to enter a concert and I found this place, with very good quality food in small portions and quickly cooked. A very recommended place if you want to attend any of the Barbican events

My third and final visit to the Lounge. We arrived early to an early reservation, only to be taken past a series of empty tables right to the back corner, and lo, that was our table. Granted on a Saturday they were inevitably due to get busy but having reserved a seat I expect better that our table and view: a corner and a window onlooking concrete and cement.

To make matters worse, the tables at the back were tightly packed together. Meaning that when the table next to us was occupied some 45 minutes later, there was no space to escape without asking occupants of two tables to get up. Ridiculous.

We had lunch recently as a family with two small children, aged 6 and 4. The food was tasty and well-presented. The chicken skewers went down a treat with our children as did the duck spring rolls. My husband and I enjoyed other small plates and overall the food although not outstanding, was very good.
The service was amazing, we had two very friendly waitresses who kept the children entertained by making paper boats out of the discarded menus!
I would definitely recommend The Lounge as the outdoor seating area must be stunning in the summer.

We chose 4 small plates between 2 of us and were able to share . Although looking small that was a substantial amount of food. Each dish was a different flavour and texture , making choosing the best rather difficult. We would happily recommend this restaurant.

After 30 years the Barbican has nailed it with its level 1 restaurant The Lounge. This is in between the ground fllor self service cafe and the really smart restaurant upstairs. Lakeside view, terrace for fine weather, a good choice of small plates. Service is prompt, efficient and friendly. Reasonable, short wine list. Chairs could be a bit more comfortable The cocktails stand out: the negroni excellent on two separate occasions, gimlet also passed (my husbands stiff) test.

We had a party of 4 for lunch and we took the lunch deal at £12.50. There was a good range of food on the menu and we all enjoyed it. The service was very good. It was a cold day so we couldn't sit outside but I think I'll return to sit outside when the weather improves.

This was the second tie we've eaten here, both times before going to see a show at the Barbican Theatre, for which the Barbican Lounge is perfectly located. The first time was a Saturday evening and with friends, so we were looking for something a little special. This more recent occasion was just two of us, midweek, for a quick bite before the theatre. On both occasions the food has been really good - an interesting selection of taps with some unusual dishes too. The place has a bit of an institutional feel so I'm not sure we'd rush there unless we were at the Barbican anyway. But beware the prices - it's not a place for a cheap snack: 3 tapas dishes (between us, not each!), a glass of wine each and coffee (which was not great) came to close to £50. I'm sure we'll be back as we're regulars at the Barbican, but we'll keep more of an eye on the cost of what we're ordering if we just want a quick midweek snack.
