Barbican Fish Bar in Plymouth

Disappointed. Half the chips were cold and chewy, the other half were kinda warm. The curry sauce lid wasn't on so it exploded within the paper. To make things worse I found a black hair within my chips!! Definitely will not be coming back

Pretty disappointing. Food was OK, not reflective of the reviews. Spent £25 on two meals for sit down and was told it was 50p extra for ketchup. Not for me.

Best chippie on the Barbican in Plymouth in my opinion! Their pineapple fritters are to die for!

Our go-to food venue in Plymouth as all the food is Gluten Free - YAY! Completely takes the stress away from worrying about contamination and the fish and chips are lovely too. Super quick service. Highly recommended.

After an horrendous experience at the local Meza, we went into this fish shop and the girl serving was amazing, the food was even better A credit to your business Thank you for making a bad night better

A great fish & chip bar, only one of our party is gluten intolerant, but we all ate together, and the food was delicious. Great crunchy batter, and chips, way better than many regular chip shops. The staff are great, really helpful, and with there non-gluten free restaurant right next door, happy to point those people there who feel gluten-free might not be for them. But I recommend you give them a try from here.

First place we go when in Plymouth and rhe ONLY place we get fish and chips. Amazing food and lovely waitstaff, esp Natasha. So kind and helpful and funny!

Found one member of staff very rude we didn’t even get to order our takeout food as she saw that we had been in to the Pasty shop down the road, told us to get out and if we wanted to order anything we need to ask someone on the street to go and do it for us. Will never go to that chip shop again. If this is how they treat customers they don’t deserve to stay in business.

Delicious battered sausage and chips, a rare unstressful eating out experience for a coeliac! My friends ate from the gluten free shop too and honestly felt that there was no difference in the ordinary fish and chips.

Great cod and chips here and very helpful service too. Definitely the place to go for fish and chips

Food is brilliant and safe to eat for my Coeliac mother. When a couple walked in with non-gluten free food, they got asked to not bring the food in. Brilliant service and brilliant food.

Not very appealing. Been a few times now incase the first was just a one off but it wasn't. A chip shop that can't make tasty chips is a concern. The fish came burnt and the burger bun was rock hard. Its not good value either. Real shame as its a perfect location for a quality fish and chip shop. Please improve

Speechless. I’ve got Coeliac disease and can rarely have fish and chips, so even if this food hadn’t been perfect, I’d have still been happy. Was visiting family in Plymouth and decided to go out for a birthday meal. It’s safe to say, the food was indeed PERFECT and the staff were an absolute delight. This is the best fish and chips, all three of us (including the wheat-eaters) had ever had. Everyone should eat here, everything is delicious. Thank you for the best birthday chippies!

Service was fabulous and such a treat to go to a totally gluten free fish and chip shop. I thoroughly enjoyed it in the knowledge that there was definitely no contamination. I will definitely be coming back next time I visit Plymouth. :)

Very disappointing. Ordered a click & collect: They left out the peas in the ‘cod and peas meal’. Gluten free fish was as bland as anything, along with the chips. They left out the salt and vinegar from both. Most disappointing meal and duly had to throw away two thirds of it.

Really good to find somewhere gluten free. The others with me who aren't gluten free didn't notice a difference and enjoyed what that had.

I was pleased to find a gluten free chip shop. But the staff are not great at customer service. No greeting on entering. My partner had to speak up first as we were blankly ignored when we stood at the till. The cod tasted a bit too dry for my liking and the batter was not cooked properly. The only thing I liked was the chips, the chips were delicious. But I don't think I would come here again.

We visited the Barbican Fish Bar on the 23/09/23 during a day in Plymouth. We decided to give it a try as everywhere else was really busy in Plymouth centre. We sat in on the last available table. Ordered regular cod and chips and a cheeseburger and chips with two cans of drinks. We didn't know it was a "Gluten Free" chip shop and was warned the bread wasn't like normal bread for the cheeseburger. But thought it would be fine as where else could we go to eat. Staggering £26 pounds odd for the meal, why so much I don't know ? Took a good 10 to 15 minutes before ready. Everyone else eating in had plates but our food came out in takeaway boxes for some unknown reason. First impressions looked ok. Then more closely the burger looks very enemic and batter in cod looked flat and quite greasy. Went to use the the salt to find blocked and damp. Had to ask my neighboring table if I could use theirs. Vinegar tasted watered down. No matter how much you used you couldn't tast vinegar. To round this up. The cheeseburger was awful end of. The cod and chips were completed tasteless. You couldn't taste anything from them. Fish was moist almost to being wet. Batter tasteless and flat and thick. Definitely not the best I've ever eaten. I had to leave quite a few chips in the end. To sum things up. Overpriced, bland fish and chips and a cheeseburger that was fairly inedible. Just do yourself a big favour and try somewhere else 🤨

Absolutely terrible service ... today on the 23rd Sept at 5-20pm i ordered just sausage and chips .... waited and waited and waited and then your staff informed me they lost my receipt .... and asked what do i want ...... there were only 3 customers in there FFS.... i walked out and as my taxi had waited 10 minutes already , i suggest you look for new staff before you lose all your customers .... i didn't bother asking for a refund as that would have cost me more than the taxi waiting

Order fish and chips from here and I must say I'm very disappointed. We usually buy from here but haven't for couple months and we decide to and the chips was hard and look old the fish well fish was overcooked and also looked old and we only bought food from here after a 2/3 hours of it opening. Never will I order from here again. The food should of been fresh not old.what a waste of money ey

Very very overpriced food nerly 30 pounds for 2 fish and chips ridicules the staff were very bad especially the cook how was not doing his job properly. The woman there were very grumpy and horrible. My dads fish was horrible and dirty. He was very upset. Over all don't come here ever.😡😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬👎👎👎👎😫😫😫😫😫☹🙁

Went for fish and chips here today, what a disappointment, the chips had probably been cooked 2 or 3 times, the outside of the chips was so hard they were difficult to chew, the fish was miniscule, and the mushy peas were horrible, the curry sauce was fine, the price was £12.60 each, I asked if I could swap one of the carton of peas for the curry sauce, yep no problem, but I had to pay for the curry sauce extra, anyway, I will not be visiting this cafe/restaurant again..very disappointed..

If you have money to burn on a meal of what I call a child's size portion then go here. Paid £8.50 for fish and chips no taste to the fish and the portion was tiny.

If you're hesitant about going here, don't be, you will not be disappointed. This is by far THE BEST chippy I have ever been to! I'm a vegetarian, and what drew me inside was the mushy-pea fritter! Being from Cornwall, but moving to Stafford, pea fritters are one of the things I truly miss. It was definitely the best I've had the pleasure of eating! I also had cheesy chips. I swear the chips are battered lightly or something. They were so beautifully golden and crispy. Then, a pot of curry sauce to dip in, the curry sauce was incredible! Not like normal chippy curry sauces. It was such a curry tasting curry sauce! My fella had a cheeseburger and chips. He said it was delicious. He's not a man of words 🤣 I didn't even realise it was gluten-free until we started eating, so that was a bonus. The staff were lovely, so polite. Please do try it here, it's so worth the money!

Great fish and chip shop, dine in or take out available, as with everything else you pay for what you get, it's a little expensive, however it's worth every penny One on parking, it simply a nightmare to park on the Barbican, best park in town centre and walk down, its only a sort walk

Ryba smaczna, świeża, dobrze upieczoną. Brak trochę przyprawy na cieście. Porcja duża wychodzi poza talerz.Choć odrobinkę koperku. Frytki bez zarzutu. Smaczne ziemniaki. Ceny przystępne. Ogromny minus za brak sałatek. Jakiś coleslaw lub chociaż pickle. Ale nie odejmuję gwiazdki ponieważ w UK nie ma tradycji kiszonej kapusty do tłustych potraw. Szczerze polecam tą smażalnie dla dorosłych i dzieci.

Young server Dillon was so friendly and the food was lovely.

The gluten free batter is crispy and tasty without any of the "gloop" you often get in fish batter. The young lady who was serving was a credit to the business.

I was eating in there other fish and chip shop nextdoor. Very good but the price for the fish on the board is without chips. If your eating in don't charge for the tarter sauce and tomato sauce it's not fair. The girl serving Tina had good customer service skills and was very polite and friendly.

Been a while since I last came to Barbican Fish bar, so glad to return with a visiting friend. Portion sizes were of good size and my curry sauce was in a pot so I could dip or pour it. Drinks were slow, but staff were fantastic for a Cold Monday afternoon.

Used to go there regularly on my trips to Plymouth as food and service was always good and prices were very reasonable. Today I had a rather disappointing experience: dry and overcooked fish. Ordered the large meal portion and it was mainly batter and little fish. Prices have gone up massively. Served by staff in Harbourside t-shirt so assuming they've taken over. Friendly service though. My two favorites eating place have now gone in a month. Sad times.

Had the burger, chicken strips and chips. £20, poor quality burger, ok chicken, ok fries. Doesn’t seem like good value to me. Room for improvement deffo. Extra star for being gluten free otherwise would scrape a 2. Wanted to love it and hope they see this as an opportunity.

Lovely stuff. Great chips and good selection of veggie options. But, I don’t understand why veggie sausage is £2.50 in the shop, yet shown as £3.95 on Deliveroo?! Edit: went in today, no real veggie options in either of the three shops apart from vegan fish (no thanks) bit disappointing given how it was last time! Wasted walk down to the three shops. It can’t be that hard to have a veggie sausage or two in stock!

Overpriced and overcooked. Long wait and small portion of chips. Fish was dried out mushy peas, also dry, lumpy molten gravy. Sorry on the hole bad experience could have had a restaurant quality experience in platters a few doors up for the same money.

Pleasant staff food really nice and cooked to order

Our second visit yesterday, cod and chips with loads of salt and vinegar. Beautiful fish and really tasty chips. It was luckily not too busy at the time, so not a long wait. Polite staff, good vibe and great food.

Very good takeaway chip shop with reasonably prompt service, crunchy, well cooked chips and a couple of places to sit.

Good value for money though watch out for the 9PM Sunday closing time I just experienced even though the door sign still says 10. The photo shows time on the parking meter, chairs & tables stacked & door locked at 9.

Service was very pleasant even if colloquial "my lovely". The fish was really well cooked (both Haddock and Cod) and a good size portion of chips for a not unreasonable price. With a seat in the window we could watch the world go by (mainly bedraggled due tot the heavy rain showers!)

Great food but, that's about it, 4* only go to the kitchen and food. You need to forget the saying "cheap as chips"...3 small "fish & chips" 2 with cheese, will set you back about £25. The staff is great, once they take notice of you waiting right by the counter, they prioritise, it seemed to me, online orders. If "fish & chips" isn't in your daily menu, it's worth it.

Decent fish and chips in a nice lively seaside setting. Good price (just over a fiver for regular chips and sausage) and decent portions. Didn't have to queue and food was ready in no time. Would definitely come again.

PLEASE, bring in some freshly made tartar sauce! Can't have great fish & chips without great sauce. Not the fastest place in terms of service so be prepared to wait after you place your order (on a kiosk terminal at the front door). A bit on the pricey side, but really great batter for GLUTEN FREE dining. It didn't fall apart into little pieces like a lot of the GF batter does and the fish was done perfectly. One of those things that you 'have' to try! Go sit by the dock for a great view and a gull may even sneak a fry, making this a true Plymouth experience.

Multiple visits, never disappoints. Eating fish and chips without being afraid of gluten is such an amazing place to be.

Took them half an hour to accept the order on delivero and prior to this, multiple visits have resulted in no food due to no card machine. Just flat out disappointing. The time just keeps going up and up....

Went here last March and it was an extremely enjoyable experience with delicious food and generous portions! Will be coming back soon!

Normally it's a 5 star chip shop, but a few occasions, the chips have been rock hard and dry, like they'd been sat there a long while... Maybe just a blip, to their usually great service..

The tasty smell of chips drew us to this very clean and neat looking fish and chip shop which had seats as well. We just needed a little lunch stop so a portion of chips with curry sauce....whats not to like! Chips came nicely done, hot and golden, the curry sauce was your go to chip shop sauce so ideal. Tables and seating area very nicely done, felt quite "posh" for a fish and chip shop. Easy to find right on the Southside street a popular area.

The girls who cook the fish are amazing cooks for a start and most places are non-dog friendly well this restruant does! As soon as someone leaves they make sure it is cleaned up ASAP!!

Great fish cooked fantastically

Our family use this fish bar as the food is plentiful,enjoyable,affordable when visiting the Barbican for our holidays. I've had a chip butty which was filling, the fish was large and delicious for my husbands meal. The kids had chips and mushy peas which were lovely. The fish bar serves hot drinks too. We had our meal indoors in the seating area near the window, the neutral decor is a lovely tone and the chairs and seating are comfy. The counter staff are helpful and pleasant whilst serving customers. Atm cash machine inside too.
