Avoid Sunday lunch here unless you like very bland, tasteless, underdone roast beef that you would struggle to get a knife through as it is as tough as old boots. Here if something is not right rude arrogant jobs worth staff blame the customer!!! I only managed to eat the roast potatoes and made staff aware of the problems. See more detailed review under Skiddaw hotel. A score of 3.5 on Trip Adviser speaks for itself. I wish I had checked the reviews beforehand.

We stopped for lunch after visiting the market, choice for sandwiches poor and they were not presented well, just dumped on the plate and then the table, one of our party was gluten free and the options were very disappointing although the jacket potato I ordered was ok. 2 sandwiches, jacket potato and drinks (coffee) plus two desserts was £80, I came away feeling ripped off, it was certainly not worth the money. The staff were very busy but dealt with our party promptly.

Waited 45mins for starter only for waitress to bring the wrong soup that wasn’t even on the menu, finally got right soup 1hr after ordering (no apology) wife’s starter (finished by time mine arrived) was strange inedible mushroom feta and carrot. On balance main Sunday roast was decent but nothing compensates for lack of general apology regards mistake and delays in service. Ironically being local we have never visited before but maybe now we understand why tables were available while our usual places were full.

After seeing some of the recent reviews on Trip Advisor we were a little hesitant to try here, however we only wanted something light and quick and the conservatory looked very modern and inviting. The food was really good, nicely presented , healthy portion size and arrived within good time. The service was indifferent, no one really ‘welcomed’ you or added to the experience with the service provided, hence 4*. When in the area again I would go back and I would also recommend to others.

The waitress named Leanne has the worst customer service skills I have ever encountered in over 50 years of visiting the Lake District. Her attitude was rude and condescending and appalling to see in such a distinguished hotel as the Skiddaw. I asked if she could put ice into 2 drinks she had made as it was a very hot day and drinks turn warm very quickly. She was outraged with anger at my request, she picked up the ice bucket and slammed it onto the counter as hard as was possible, startling myself and also every other guest in the bar, she then called over to her colleague "apparently I can't make drinks properly NOW" this left me shocked and feeling very uneasy and vulnerable, we left the establishment within minutes. Leanne's actions are totally unacceptable, she is a rottweiler is a position a little poodle should be operating.

We had a wonderful experience here. Dog friendly in the conservatory, and super cool with the air conditioning on - very thankful of that in this heat after hiking! Service was brilliant and food delicious, we had beef pastrami toastie, and prawn sandwich - really good and good value for money! Recommend for a more relaxing lunch than the usual hectic hot spots in Keswick!

Our normal 'go to' place for food and drink when we visit Keswick for the week. What a disappointment this week...on Saturday we wanted a sharing platter...told it was too big for our outside table, we said we had 2 tables, could they split it to smaller platters..."No". Time to leave and spend our money elsewhere. We gave them another try on Tuesday, food and drinks...3 pints of cider tasted 'odd' ...we mentioned this to the waitress, for no reason other than to let them know. A chap came out to see us, we explained that they tasted 'off'....no apologies, we were just told that they couldn't be off as the lines were just changed yesterday. How not to do customer service. Luckily Keswick has many other options, the Skiddaw has lost hundreds of my £s this week. MUST TRY HARDER. If he'd said sorry we'd have been happy.

We decided to have lunch here as tapas were advertised which is one of our favourites. They stated the chef had spent many years in Majorca. I have to say we were a bit underwhelmed. The bread was served with dipping oil without balsamic, meatballs average, stuffed peppers small and the patatas bravas were reheated boiled new potatoes soaked in thin tomato sauce. Never had patatas bravas like this before, always been crispy pieces with a thicker sauce spooned over the top. We'll not return.

Staff lovely, efficient and helpful. But the food was disappointing. On the plus side, the cranberry sauce, stuffing and extra gravy requested were all good, but we were pretty sure that most of the veg were from the freezer and the bread for the soup was hard.. Visiting the lakes with family who travelled over from Texas. Day trip to Keswick and they wanted high tea style afternoon tea. We chose the Skiddaw Hotel to book ahead as it seemed central and at £20 per head we figured we would be in for a treat. Website picture of the high tea they serve looked very classy and elegant. On arrival we walked into a dated pub through a shabby conservatory which did not smell especially pleasant. No one was eating, it was just a few scattered, lonely looking people nursing beers. At this point we were a bit worried but we assumed there would be a much nicer area for afternoon tea. Sadly not. They took us to the conservatory. We immediately excused ourselves to try and quickly find a tearoom somewhere instead but they were all closing at 4.30 or 5 at the latest. In the end we went back to Skiddaw and decided to just ignore the surroundings since the tea was sure to be great and looked amazing on the menu.Well sadly this was a mistake. We ordered 4 high teas (1 vegetarian and 1 with ham instead of salmon). They brought out 2 tall platters, no explanation, only vegetarian sandwiches on 1 and only ham on the other . They brought 1 small (1 cup) pot of green tea and 1 regular (2 cup) pot of English breakfast tea. My husband had no cup of tea at all and we were given no tea refills. We also had no service after that and staff were clueless about what to do when we complained. After about 10 mins, another platter came out with cheap sliced ham and tomato sandwiches but no salmon as 1 of our party had requested no salmon on his order. The whole event was just a mass of confusion. 1 staff member claimed all the salmon sandwiches got binned because 1 of our party had asked for no salmon sandwiches on his!!! Seriously, what sort of business operates in this way????The scones were rather dry and the comparison of the high tea photo on the menu versus what we had was embarrassing (see picture below). I spent a lot of time walking around trying to complain. We’d been walking round all day and were hungry so we ate what we had. Most of the first set of sandwiches we got were pretty good and the little brownies and custard cakes were lovely so they are capable of providing decent food but there was no care or effort given to service or presentation (the picture of the beautiful, artisan mini trifles in the menu picture compared to the mashed up berries and cream served in a shot glass which we actually got was just embarrassing to see!!!) and unfortunately it was just a stressful and disappointing experience. In the end the manager gave a small discount off the bill of around 10% and we really couldn’t be bothered to argue so we paid it. so I really suggest the management drop their prices as £20 per head is way too much and the pictures are massively misleading!! £12 per head maximum for what you offer OR actually make your high tea reflect the pictures you post!! Don’t show beautiful, elegant, silver teapots and then just give basic, standard teapots too! Take pride in what you are selling and deliver what you are promising instead of over-selling, over-charging and under-delivering!

This could have been such a lovely stay. The room was beautiful, great views, great location. Dinner in the Coppa Club was good. Not at any point were we prompted to book a table for breakfast. Surely it is safe to assume that a hotel has a space for guests to have breakfast?? Apparently not. We were told to "find a sofa" (there weren't any free) as the restaurant was fully booked (it was half empty). All this in a pretty rude manner. The restaurant host really needs to look at how to run a table plan. And the hotel shouldn't hide behind the fact that Coppa Club is a different business. The entrance is in the hotel reception. Comminication is obviously none existent. What a let-down.

Went to the conservatory for an early evening bite to eat on two occasions. The Skiddaw has really gone down hill in the last couple of years. Service was slow, it appears that serving staff are school kids who haven't been trained properly, e.g. clearing plates before the whole party has finished eating. On the second occasion we went there the serving staff (one girl) had disappeared completely so I had to go to the bar to ask for our deserts to be served. The serving girl then suddenly reappears and drags a chair out of the way so she could plonk her tray down to clear the table and then leaves the chair. There was not a word from her, no apology, nothing, a right little madam she was. Fish and chips were greasy. The conservatory has been up for many years and is in need of decorating, some of the windows have blown and are going misty, the roof panels are filthy as are the roof drapes and the windows sills are in bad need of a coat of paint. Instead of throwing millions at the Lodore, Lake District Hotels need to spend some money on their other hotels.

Decided to eat here as it was my birthday, didn’t have a room but stopped by for a meal at 6.00pm and went to conservatory bar which had a nice view of the market square. Ordered light meal for myself of chicken bang bang which was meant to have lime, coriander, chilli as well as noodles. Could taste none of these, chicken was on skewer but no trace of having been grilled or near any sort of hot plate, had taste and texture of being poached and the over riding taste was of peanut which was not mentioned in the menu....partner had a beef suet pudding which came with chips (bizarre, expected new potatoes or mash and some vegetables) the chips seemed to have been thrice cooked and were frankly inedible. My light meal had been intended to allow room for dessert. Needless to say just paid and left. Should have complained but not asked whether we had enjoyed meal and frankly considering the occasion just wanted to move on.

We use this Bar/Lounge every time we visit Keswick. It is comfortable, has a real fire during the winter months, entertainment in the way of singers/musicians on Friday/Saturday nights. The staff are warm and friendly and welcoming , one being Julia ( I am not good with names) who always has a pleasant smile and shows interest in you and what you have to say. The area has 'air con' which we find in this country a non necessity. My wife gets cold in June/July/August and when it is on blocks of ice come to mind. However, when requested to switch it off staff usually do.Prices are what I call normal for hostilleries. The conservatory is also very pleasant and comfortable. There were other members of staff who talked to their customers and were friendly enough. Spent the afternoon in Keswick and popped into the hotel for a cup of tea before leaving. The tea itself was fine, but the miniature cake I ordered with it was abismal. It was supposed to be a Victoria sponge cake, but the cream was not real (tasted like chemicals) and the sponge was freezer burnt. I wouldn't have served that to anyone. Maybe the rest of the menu is fine, but if you can't get a mini cake right, I wouldn't keep my expectations too high.

We stayed at the hotel and opted to dine in the conservatory as it seemed less formal than the restaurant. Good choice. We sat in the conservatory and watched the world go by. We had warm bread with vinegar and oil, followed by burgers, I had the chicken burger which was prices of chicken breast in a bun, with mayo and guacamole, followed by sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. The food was lovely, especially the dessert. It's not the cheapest of food but really enjoyable and you get what you pay for. It's a lovely atmosphere , there are about 12 tables (I think) and there were people dining as well as people in just enjoying a cup of tea or a drink.Glad we chose to eat here, will visit again

We were staying across the road in their sister hotel 'Inn on the Square', we had eaten their previously so we went across to the skiddaw. We sat in the conservatory which was great for people watching! We both ordered the 'breakfast' burger, it was so yummy! We also ordered a side order of onion rings which weren't great, hence the reason only a 4/5. They were drowned in oil and so greasy I only ate one! Luckily my boyfriend isn't picky so polished off the whole bowl.A little pricey but would definitely be back - great customer service too! Thanks!

Visited for Mother's Day and had afternoon tea in the upstairs residents lounge. After reading the reviews I was apprehensive and when we arrived it seemed that we had caught them on the hop as there was nothing prepared or ready for us. However, the staff were very welcoming and the afternoon tea was beautiful. Lots of sandwiches on very fresh bread, beautiful cakes, strawberry tarts, eclairs, warm fruit scones with jam and clotted cream and other small fancies. Served with tea and coffee. Overall it was fabulous. Thoroughly enjoyed our Mother's Day treat. Lovely touch of getting some daffodils too on leaving to celebrate Mother's Day

Stopped for a quick drink and snack with two dogs so good to find somewhere we didnt have to put them back in the car. Ordered olives and nachos and a beer and wine. Service is really rather slow. Nachos very disappointing just a bowl of nachos with grated cheddar cheese and a dip that was like tomato sauce. Olives and Feta very salty. OK and warm but that is about all you could say. The family at the table next door seemed to be struggling to get their food and the children were obviously bored waiting. Its in a good position and should have a roaring trade but I wouldnt go back unless it was just for a drink . . I would give the food a miss.

Terrible. Staff behaviour was utterly appalling. They had no consideration at all for customers (who do actually pay their wages). There were too busy gossiping amongst themselves. Including relaying derogatory stories about guests and, and staring at us. Just disgusting. We felt really awkward in there and it completely spoilt our meal. The meal itself was average at best. The steak and ale pie was not what you would expect! There was no puff pastry it was part of a flat pie and not good enough! Like no kind of pie we've ever seen before. Will never be going back! Stay away at all costs. There much nicer places to eat in Keswick with staff who do actually care about customers!

Visited this hotel on a number of occasions and had many a snack and cups of coffee with no problem. Decided to order a meal in the conservatory. Big mistake. I ordered a steak n ale pie with Mash. I was expecting an individual pie with a nice puff pastry top !!! What I got was a quarter of a flat plate pie. Never seen anything like it before. And it cost £11. The mash was un mashed. Larges lumps !!!! Awful. Stick to snacks and you won t go wrong.

The food was "ok" and certainly nothing to complain about. But neither would we rush back. Husband had steak and ale pie which he said tasted nice but the look of it, with the chips and garden peas, was insipid. I had a vegetarian sweet potato curry....nice but more rice than curry. I liked their idea of a small cake/dessert and coffee instead of a huge dessert. As others have said though conservatory is great for "people" watching.

If you are passing and want a snack then don't stop burn teacakes the staff was to busy gossiping at the bar and did not want to serve . The chocolate fudge cake we also ordered took over 15mins we don't mind waiting if the food but they was not busy just talking and using mobile phones and drinking . maybe some training would be a good idea for customer service ?

As the conservatory was dog friendly we called in for a sandwich at lunchtime. Great place to people watch. The service was a little lacking, although the staff seemed busy & were friendly. We ordered a beef sandwich which was well presented with a little side salad, dressing & coleslaw but why would you leave large lumps of fat on the beef? We had to ask again for our drinks order well after the sandwich was consumed

We stayed in Keswick for 3 nights this July and had a drink at the bar lounge and Conservatory. We ordered Mojito's which were a little overpriced at £12 for 2. We were advised that they did not have mango and passionfruit therefore we were asked to choose another drink. We asked if we could have the Mojito's without this and they said they would do this for us. The service was quite slow and the bill did not reflect the wait and the lack of ingredients in the drinks. We have had drinks there before and have had a more positive result. I think you need to up your game a little.

We went for lunch here as we enjoy sitting in the conservatory as its a lovely atmosphere and pleasant to sit in and enjoy a drink and food , however the last time we went was very dissapoi ting we ordered a toasted sandwich and some cheesy nachos the sandwich was fine but the nachos were terrible just nachos sat on a plate and a bit of grated cheese on them they weren't stuck together and warm like they should be so we asked for them to be done agsin but when they were returned they had just added and little more cheese and it was still not right so we ate the sandwhich and then left , we did pay for the food but it spoiled our lunch out.

Had lunch here when visiting Keswick. We had to sit in the conservatory as we had a dog with us which was o k as the seating was comfortable and it was bright and airy. Prompt friendly service. We chose a special of sliced turkey with coriander rice and garlic nan bread. The portion was huge. It was very nice hot and tasty and we were pleased with our choice. The price was £10.95 each but we thought it was worth it. Would definitely go again and would recommend.

We have previously had a snack here - soup and sandwich, which we thought was quite good. Service, too, is very good.On this basis we were happy to try a full meal this week, and both ordered fish and chips. Oh dear. After a considerable wait the fish appeared to be of the very cheap sort found in freezer stores, Hoki perhaps, and mine had either been cooked or re-heated in a waffle maker (the pattern was clear to see). Within the batter, between two slabs of fish, was a very black, and several times cooked chip. The whole thing was quite disgusting. We were quickly offered anything else we wanted from the menu, but chose to leave, with the bill cancelled.Won't be back.

We were having a final holiday meal, and decided to try what looked like a more upmarket than the splendid meals for the price we had experienced at Wetherspoons in Keswick. However, my husbands fish was so awful he had a full refund, and my steak and ale pie was only just average, despite us both spending £12.50 each on our meals. We should have gone to Wetherspoons!

First off, the service was good. Our server at the bar was polite and friendly, and our food came pretty fast. The setting is pleasant, especially if you sit at the external area with glass walls facing the street outside which made for good people-watching. But the dishes we ordered - fish & chips and the seafood basket - were a disappointment. The fried items were greasy and rather bland, and were pretty overpriced for their value. Also to note, the hotel seems to host conferences or if your meal coincided with their tea-breaks, you could have a large crowd quickly swarming the restaurant. It was not a big issue but just order your food promptly lest you're relegated to the end of the queue within seconds! Overall, the service and ambiance was nice but the food was rather disappointing.

The state of this place continues its sad decline. Standards have dropped significantly since my last visit a couple of months ago. The men's toilets are an absolute disgrace. There's one serviceable cubicle- but the toilet bowl is hanging off the wall and the door lock has been bodged up so many times it barely provides the necessary privacy. The stench from the urinals is so bad - you can tell when the toilet door opens as it wafts into the pub. Not really what you want to be smelling when you're eating and drinking- it's bad enough when you have to go to the toilet . The staff are great but completely up against it as there are so few of them. Dirty glasses pile up on tables untouched. This place is desperate for a makeover. I for one won't be rushing back. I know the beer is cheap but, I'm afraid I'd rather pay "proper pub" prices and have a degree of comfort rather than sit in a what effective looks and smells like a cattle market. Come on 'Spoons. You can do much much better than this.

My husband, myself and our 13 year old son visited The Brasserie two days ago on a Saturday evening. We were able to walk from our cottage accomadation to the Brasserie. On arrival to the venue we were very impressed by the beautiful driveway leading down to the Brasserie. The whole establishment is obviously very well kept with beautiful spring flowers and plants and lovely lighting down the drive. On entering the Brasserie however, we were suprised that the decor didnt appear to match the rest of the hotel. We were approached by a friendly waiter on arrival who took our drinks and food order promptly. He checked we were all ok during the first half of our meal and we felt his interactions with us were appropriate, not too overpowering or disinterested. My husband ordered the mushroom stroganoff. He felt it was quite ordinary and bland. I ordered the brushetta and a side portion of fries. I felt the brushetta was overpriced but the fries were beautiful. My son ordered the pizza which he said was really tasty! During the meal.another member of staff( female) arrived and we have to say it was quite an experience! We had ordered a second round of drinks. I had ordere a lakes gin and a small bottle of fever tree ginger ale to mix it with. I was allowing my son to taste the ginger ale from the bottle. The waitress appeared out of nowhere and snatched the bottle from his hand with a resounding"no!" It shocked us all! We reassured her that this was not an alcoholuc drink. She then commented in quite a rude manner when my husband wiped his nose gently on a napkin and also told us later on during the meal that she was used to working in the " posh restaurant". During our meal she stood over us on several.occasions which we felt was inappropriate and a bit unnerving! We felt she would benefit from some more training from more experienced members of staff. We did realise she was young and and was probably trying to.please (.a little too much). We were very patient with her but felt there may be future guests who may not be quite so tolerant! A little later during the evening my husband and our son went to use the toilet closest to the Brasserie. They came back and both told me there was smashed glass on the floor and a dirty nappy. My husband reported this to a member of staff from the spa team. On leaving the Brasserie we walked through to the hotel reception as we were all so concerned about the state of the toilet and wanted to ensure it had been sorted and the message had got trough. The lady on hotel reception didnt appear to know anything about this but we did see her promptly speaking to another hotel member of staff after our conversation. The only other disappointing part to.our meal was the cheeseboard. It sounded fantastic on the Brasserie menu but when it arrived we were informed that some of the cheeses were not available. The waiter did however add a few extra for us but we felt this could have been mentioned before we went ahead with the order. Sadly it was a disappointing experience as it could be a fabulous setting within the grounds of an obviously gorgeous hotel.

We were staying in Keswick on the first of November 2024 to celebrate two 50th birthday’s. Keswick was extremely busy and four eating establishments we went to couldn’t accommodate our party of seven. However the Lake road inn had vacant tables which was great and now I understand why. It was 2.30pm and the kitchen was closing at 5.00pm so they explained the menu was limited (fair enough). After viewing the limited menu we decided it couldn’t accommodate our party so thought we would have a drink whilst booking another venue on line for an hours time. Ordered a Guinness then a glass of Malbec. No Malbec and then discovered a lot of the ales were unavailable too. We decided this just wasn’t for us and said to the bar it doesn’t matter and left. We were chased across the pub by a member of staff with a card reader to pay for the half Guinness that was settling (the first drink on my order) he said I had to pay as it was wastage? Like nothing ever gets spilt behind the bar??.I reluctantly paid for it and asked for an additional empty half glass in order to share it so we could quickly move on. We moved out side and found the empty half glass was dirty and the Guinness had a black hair in the head. We poured it down the drain. We love Keswick and the people are lovely, friendly and accommodating. So please don’t waste your money at the Lake Road Inn. There are so many better establishments than here!! Avoid!! As a party of seven there for food and drinks we would have spent £200+, so their loss!! We had a lovely meal at the Pack Horse Inn. Lamb burger special was tremendous!!! I highly recommend the Pack horse inn, the pheasant, or the George. I can only hope The lake Road Inn falls into administration and a decent proprietor takes it over. Harsh but fair.
