Bar Azita in North Hertfordshire

This place is normally very busy, lots of local people recommend this place so I thought I would go and try it out on a Saturday afternoon. I do venture out a bit and try places outside of the local area so I would say I do have higher expectations when it comes to food. Firstly, the service is good. Waiting staff are eager to help, they could probably smile a bit more though. The atmosphere was good, quite relaxing and welcoming at the same time. I was a bit disappointed with the food. It felt a bit reheated rather than made fresh. There are times when re-heated food is acceptable and the higher quality establishments that do this don't have dishes that make you feel they were simply warmed up. Even if this place didn't reheat the food the dishes certainly felt like it. The service and atmosphere saved this review as I believe the food could be a lot better.

We ordered the Taramasalata, Halloumi, Berenjenas con miel de caña (aubergine and sugar cane), Cretan Cheese Pies (feta in filo pastry with honey), Patatas Bravas, Boquerones (deep fried whitebait), Croquette and pitta. The croquettes were very luxurious, the whitebait were large and a hearty portion. The feta in filo was the star of the show, crispy creamy a little sour with a hint of sweetness from the honey. The aubergine was nice something a little different. I was a little let down by the Patatas Bravas I wish they had been more crispy.

Really friendly staff couldn't do enough to be helpful. The food was very nice. We left a happy couple and would recommend people coming here. It's a little a gem for Hitchin

It was a busy Saturday night when my partner and I tried our luck here. The server told us they didn’t have any free tables but could squeeze us in if we didn’t mind eating at the bar… little did we know that these seats are actually the best in the house! We loved watching the barman making cocktails and the service we received was absolutely impeccable since the staff were all right there. We ordered the Olivieh (a Persian dip made with chicken/potatoes/egg, accompanied by a generous portion of pita bread), Cretan Cheese Pies (filo pastry parcels filled with feta and honey), Boquerones (deep-fried white bait with aioli), Albodingas (pork meatballs in an almond sauce) and Shirazi (salad of tomato, cucumber and red onion). Everything tasted incredible! We also had a couple of cocktails, including the Christmas-themed “Café con leche” which was divine. Among the best meals we’ve ever had in this country - we will definitely be back for more!

Fabulous tapas lunch with friends, service food and venue all perfect! Great range of menu choices, with set lunch offer great value option. Definitely recommend!

We tried a selection of the vegetarian tapas options. I have to admit that the food was nothing to write home about although maybe that was our choices but the atmosphere and service were great so we had a lovely evening. We will definitely be visiting again!

Cracking venue, lovely tapas and great wine selection too

I visited this restaurant for the first time five years ago, the food was enjoyable. But this time I was disappointed. I would say the food was average, one starter was actually really bad. The ribeye steak was the most plain and tasteless ribeye steak I have ever tried in my life, it’s nothing to do with adding salt to increase the flavour, the steak itself had no beef flavour, no creamy flavour that it’s supposed to have. The pork meat balls were really dry, obviously over cooked and strange tasting, to the point where they were inedible, never tasted anything like it. The white wine clams were enjoyable. On the top of that, we both have stomach issues the next day. Service was great. Will never go back.

This is our favourite place to eat lunch in Hitchin . We go on a regular basis av 3 times a month as a couple . Have also been there on family occasions with up to 10 people.

Been several times over the years and always good. Today had the set lunch menu of 3 courses and a drink, great value and extremely tasty. Service excellent as always. Highly recommend.

Our party of 9 had been asked to pre order our food choices. My starter did not arrive. I had to ask for it. The main course was the worst point. Some main dishes arrived without the accompanying rice and chips. Sever people gave up waiting for the sides and for the mains to arrive for the rest of the group. Over 10 minutes wait for all the main dishes and sides to arrive is not acceptable. Think the kitchen ran out of the albondegas sauce as my friend had the pork version with the correct sauce my lamb simply had the same chopped tomato sauce as the patas braves the course before. I have eaten here many times but tonight was appalling.

I’ve been here a few times now, and each time I have gone the food has been great. I recommend the tapas, and the lamb souvlaki is just out of this world. Service is quite good and the price is not too bad for the quality. Would love to go back and try more!

Far from ideal experience. Falafel was so overdone it almost looked black. Chips had no seasoning and there was no salt at the table. Hummus was as good as the one in Tesco and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is where was purchased. ABSOLUTE worst were prawns which arrived raw and when I asked for new ones I got same ones, badly thrown on the same plate and still undercooked. Service was less than average and I will not be coming back ever.

Have been three times now and is becoming a favourite. The argentinian steak was amazing, so much flavour! Lived the Mediterranean blend, fish tastes fresh and it's a generous dish. Staff is very friendly, even when they were fully booked they were so kind to put us in waiting list and made us feel so welcome.

Only problem there were a few of us and we ordered alot of food, they didn't bring it out in a good order and missed one, so we had all carbs then all meat etc

Pretty good price and flavor. For two we ordered a tapa of squid, croquettes, padrón peppers, Spanish olives and a beer. Pita bread is regulated. All for £31.95 The croquettes are honestly not bad, although very cooked on the outside. Fresh squid and tapas abound. The peppers were grilled and we asked them to cook them for another two minutes with a splash of oil because they were a little raw for my taste, but then they turned out very well. I haven't ordered the sangria because the lady described it to me and I don't think they know very well how to make it, but everything else is very good.

Friendly helpful staff. Food was good and came out as we agreed (as and when ready) apart from one dish which we had to chase up. Otherwise lovely visit with tasty enjoyable food. Snug seating but comfortable enough. Would happily visit again.

I have been here numerous times and it has always delivered. On this occasion I brought a few work colleagues for the first time. We ordered tapas starters which were fine but when we were ready for the mains, 1 did not arrive and mine had to go back as the cutlets were overdone and when the cutlets returned for a second time, still not acceptable. The waitress was not helpful or professional to help solve the situation. Unfortunately I won't be rushing back 😕

Visited Bar Azita recently before proposing to my boyfriend (!!) and had a lovely meal. Total value for money, lovely atmosphere and the food was just out of this world. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Hitchin!

First time . Friday evening (pre theatre) table for 4 (pre-booked). Great chice of all things Tapas and many other dishes. Staff are friendly, polite, knowledgable and professional. Varied selection of food and drinks. Food was well prepared, presented and was delicious. Well Done! Now we have found it , we will be back

Great little place for tapas, so much choice and the quality is fantastic. We have also had the full main meal version of some of the Tapas dishes and they are equally aa delicious - the sea bass is 👌. The staff are really friendly too. Oh, and make sure you check out the Belgian Chocolate Fondue for dessert, it is AMAZING!

We visited at the weekend; we were a party of 6 celebrating a birthday. We all had different (mainly fish) dishes. I and my wife chose the couple sharing menu, which comprises three courses. All was well cooked and delicious; the portion sizes were generous. The restaurant was very busy, this a testament to their success. The only downside is the time limit, which I wasn’t aware of and only a minor comment and wouldn’t stop me visiting again, and the reason for 4 stars and not 5. It felt like we were being thrown out towards the end as they needed the table for another booking.

Visited here with my wife on a quiet Monday evening, service was good and attentive. We ordered a selection of tapas, halloumi fries, swordfish, ham croquettes and I had a rib yes steak Croquettes under seasoned and a distinct lack of flavour and seasoning. Halloumi fries, over cooked, but edible Swordfish steak, over cooked. Steak was well cooked, but again lacked seasoning. I wouldn’t rush back!

The food is fantastic, there is so much variety to choose from and it comes out quickly. I often come here, and will continue to do so :)

We had a great meal here! There is a good choice of tapas to suit all tastes and the wine menu was acceptable too. The restaurant is split over two levels so if you find spiral staircases difficult ensure you book a downstairs table. The only negative is the toilets, of the two cubicles one had a broken lock resulting in a constant queue and the whole room could do with updating to match the good decor in the restaurant.

Exceptional Mediterranean tapas restaurant. Visited for lunch based on a recommendation and had a fabulous time. Great menu with a wide selection of dishes and all tasted wonderful. Highly recommended.

The food here is lovely anyway (and the sangria!) but visited again for a family birthday taking my daughter who has a nut allergy. Can often be difficult to eat out, find suitable food and understanding staff but not here! They were very understanding, had a list of allergens with a list of dishes containing those allergens. Then I was given a menu marked with items suitable for her with no ‘may contain’ nuts! She’s was given the care and attention needed for a life threatening allergy. She loved the chips which looked like crisps! Brilliant service, delicious tapas food, great atmosphere and top points from me for dealing with a nut allergy with care and professionalism. Well done 😀

We came here with great expectations, primarily based on previous reviews. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark (except the Serrano ham croquettes which were very tasty). Can't fault the service, the team was very friendly, attentive and helpful. Personally, I was slightly put off by the mix of different cuisines on the menu (Greek, Persian & Spanish), I'd just focus on one and execute that really well. The food was ok, maybe we've been spoilt by our previous tapas experiences (in Spain, but also in the UK), it was just not giving us the wow effect we were hoping for. The cocktails (old fashioned, espresso martini) were good though so we might be coming back for a couple of drinks in the future.

Decided to visit Hitchin for the day, so wasn’t sure what eateries were available. Had a wonder around and choose Bar Azita. We decided on the set lunch menu for £16 each. This consisted of a cold tapas with pitta bread, meat or chicken with coleslaw. ( the coleslaw was very fresh, light and crunchy) Dessert was churros with Belgian chocolate sauce which was so yummy and a drink (wine, beer or soft drink) The food was very good, not too big a portion, but left feeling we had enough. Service was also friendly and quick. Altogether a very enjoyable lunch in a lovely atmosphere

We had a lovely early evening meal at Bar Azita tonight. Great choice of dishes; we chose the vegetarian sharing platter plus some prawn and chicken dishes between 4 of us. Plenty to go around and even my 80 year old Dad tried and enjoyed everything, especially the churros. Attentive, friendly service and tasty food. A lovely evening.

I just love the food here and it's great value. We popped in for lunch last week and ordered snack, just huge! delicious too and the staff are always so friendly. Plenty of choice if you are a vegetarian the same as me 😊

Amazing choice, reasonable prices and excellent service. Had a lovely shared lunch of 3 cold dishes, 3 hot dishes and 2 beers - best pitta bread outside Greece, amazing tzatziki and humous, calamari good, grilled sardines amazing. Cost only £33 - absolutely first class.

Came here today, after reading up on this place online and it did not disappoint, as well as exceeded expectations! Tapas portions where more than reasonably sized/ great quality and taste. Came here for my partner’s birthday and it did not disappoint. We had a mixture of cold and hot tapas along with a meaty main and genuinely loved every dish! Do well made and good size portion (we were stuffed) even the pitta bread was so tasty. Would definitely recommend for a special occasion and sat upstairs for good vibes!

Went for dinner here recently. The restaurant is clean and looks good. Atmosphere is nice and tables well spaced. Staff were welcoming and accomodating, especially as we hadn't booked a table. Unfortunately it went seriously even dangerously wrong with the food... When ordering tapas we let the server know that I have an allergy. They provided their allery menu, showing which dishes are safe for various allergies (great!). So we ordered appropriately and repeated the allergy. When our food came out it looked good BUT we ourselves spotted that half the dishes had been covered in what Im allergic to. Fortunately I ate very little before we realised. This is really careless and potentially dangerous for allergy sufferers, as well as causing problems for those with intolerances / enforced dietary restrictions. Fortunately my allergy doesn't cause anaphylaxis, so it wasn't life threatening in this case, but mistakes like this could have serious implications. They replaced the dishes/plate/cutlery and were apologetic, but honestly it was obvious that they didn't grasp how serious this sort of thing could be for others. There was no offer of a discount or a refund on our bill; not that I expect things for free, but maybe for a couple of the affected dishes as a gesture. I had to travel home via train afterwards whilst having an allergic reaction and it took about 24 hours to recover fully. Not fun. So I won't be returning here ever again because I just can't risk this happening. And obviously I cannot recommend to anyone with any allergies or dietary requirements. If you go here and any of your party have any such concerns, be seriously careful. This really isn't good enough in 2023.

Brilliant! Really great tapas, loads of veggie options, and a lovely buzzy atmosphere. Feels like being on holiday. My current favourite restaurant in Hitchin. Love it.

A charming bar with a wide and varied menu of Mediterranean food and drinks. I shared platters with my family and the food was very good, I would like to return to see what their non sharing options are like. Also anywhere that serves Baklava gets a thumbs up in my eyes. Service was quick and efficient, and they brought the bill quickly at the end of the meal - no complaints. The setting of the bar is exquisite, however due to the high ceilings I struggled to hear anyone who wasn't sitting directly next or across from me, and my family struggled to hear each other. I would say go check it out! I recommend the swordfish on the Sea platter, and the Baklava!

Cocktails were really good - food however, definitely wouldn’t return every thing was extremely dry, I mean extremely dry and stale. They need to address the quality of the food they serve

Loved the venue - had a nice character and was quite busy. Sadly the food let it down. The tzatziki and hummus portions were tiny. Most of the table had lamb, but the cuts of meat used aren't suitable for souvlaki - very grissly. Restaurant...

Five stars for service and friendliness. The one thing I would is the patatas bravas. They would be massively improved by deep frying as is done in Spain.

Four of us came here Saturday night for dinner. Nice place with good atmosphere and very attentive and friendly staff. We had a mixture of tapas dishes to start and as our mains, all cooked perfectly and very tasty. We had three jugs of sangria (best I've ever had), two cocktails and shared a couple of desserts, all of which came to just over £175 including service charge!! Fantastic value for money. When next in the area we'll definitely go back.

Very sad to be giving such a low score.. we have been so excited to try this restaurant for months now and finally managed to get a reservation and try it. Our expectations were really high. The cocktails were extraordinary and delicious. Service was excellent. The starters were quite nice, but the main course of a sea food platter was extremely disappointing. Expected it to be a grilled Mediterranean style, instead every single item on the platter was battered and deep fried. Dry and rubbery, very heavy and rich. It really was not nice. Won’t be rushing back.. except for the cocktails!
