ROOM In Moffat's tranquil embrace, I found reprieve, A haven amidst the verdant weave. A training course beckoned, a quest for insight, Amidst Moffat's charm, I found respite Upon arrival, greeted with a smile, Room 11, my haven for a while. Spacious and cozy, a TV to see, Tea, coffee, and hot chocolate for me. A fridge stocked with care, milk in a jug, Two cokes, two waters, plenty to glug. Biscuits and sweets, Cadbury's delight, All these comforts made the stay just right. A lounge area, a sanctuary retreat, An en suite bathroom, where luxury meets. A shower hot, to invigorate, Wardrobe, drawers, bedside, complete. Some said the bar below would disturb, Yet in my haven, silence superb. A night of comfort, beyond compare, In Moffat's embrace, without a care. Breakfast Breakfast included, a feast divine, Plentiful and delicious, a sign. Return again? I definitely would, The Balmoral Hotel, exceptionally good. BAR/RESTAURANT Within its walls, a culinary tale, Where flavors dance and dreams prevail. Each dish a masterpiece, a work of art, Served with care, a chef's heartfelt part. Oh, the delights that grace the plate, From hearty pies to seafood's fate. With every bite, a journey begins, A symphony of taste, where happiness wins. Yet not just the food, but the staff's embrace, Friendly and attentive, leaving no trace. Of worry or want, they tend to all needs, Ensuring each guest's satisfaction exceeds. Clean and tidy, the ambiance serene, Where every corner, a beauty unseen. And as the seasons change, a wood burner's glow, Offers warmth and comfort, a gentle flow.

Having visited last year, we had no doubt we'd pop in again this visit. Just as nice. Great value bar prices, reasonably priced, tasty food and a lovely little beer garden. Despite being really busy and with only a couple of people working, the staff were attentive and helpful. Will definitely call in again when we're back.

Due to the latest lockdown rules there was nowhere in Moffat to sit in and eat :-( So we decided on some fish and chips. I work in a chippy so have a pretty decent expectation. It was ok, nothing more. Everything was cooked to order, the chips were decent and the fish was a sizeable portion for a "small". The batter was a bit grey and greasy and uninspiring. I'm glad I didn't pay more than a fiver for it.

We were staying in one of this hotel’s lovely cottages and as we always do after a long jouney had booked to eat in the restaurant on the night of our arrival. After this one meal we booked to eat for another 3 nights of our stay. All staff fully masked, sanitiser and Track and Trace in place. Tables well spaced apart. We felt safe and comfortable.I think it would be fair to say that The Balmoral serves a pub grub type of cuisine and does it very well indeed.Over our 4 nights we sampled lasagne, a huge cheese burger, roast beef, roast pork and a chilli con carne. All were just delicious, portions were generous, and good value.Desserts of cheesecake, ice cream and an outstanding sticky toffee pudding were a perfect way to end the meals. Average bill with a drink each was £18 per head, outstanding value.Mention must be made of the staff who in addition to serving in the restaurant had the outside bar to look after and really worked hard to keep a good service going. They were very helpful and pleasant, both at dinner and breakfast, nothing was too much trouble. This was our second visit to The Balmoral and look forward to returning again.

The rear garden is very attractive. The stall were fine but showed no interest in whether our food was of an acceptable standard. The helpings are large. The fish and chips were apparently fine. The lamb tagine wasn't. I didn't expect it to have been made in a tagine but I reasonably expected it to have been made in the style of a tagine and with the essential tagine ingredients. It wasn't. It was bland, as in totally. For £10.95 a seriously poor meal.

Had a wee trip over to moffat for a couple of nights staying on the camping and caravanning club site with the motorhome. Only live 50 miles away but great to get out and about after the lockdown and back to a lovely town I usually visit once a month. The Balmoral has always been a favourite and they have clearly made the best they can in this current situation to accommodate everyone with social distancing inside and out. My daughter was desperate to have the kids meal nuggets again, and nuggets is way under estimating them as they are chicken inner fillets (5) in lovely crisp non greasy batter with chips and peas or beans if wanted @ only £5 full price. She had them both days of the visit. I had the fillet steak stroganoff and have to say it was amongst the best I've ever had and would happily have paid the full price, but with the current government incentive to eat out and support the leisure industry it's a no brainer. Staff are also lovely.

A very underwhelming and, frankly, quite unpleasant experience which could have been vastly improved by a warm welcome, smiling accommodating staff, and if the four local p*ssheads (a la Rab C Nesbitt) at the table next to us had been encouraged not to use the f-word every 10 seconds. The girl who showed us to our table had zero interest in our experience as customers. No warm welcome, no eye contact, no conversation. What little atmosphere there was in the bar was completely ruined by the pond life effing and blinding away at the next table. I tried not to let it ruin the Iceland scampi I was served up (with about four chips and 10 peas), but I'm afraid it did. On the plus side my dining partner said her fish and chips were good, and it did look good. We left promptly without wishing to endure more of the bad language, and with nary a goodbye, thanks for coming or how was your meal? Why? Because no one in there cared a jot. You have to wonder why these people are working in the hospitality industry in the first place if they can't be hospitable and welcoming. One star for the fish and chips. We won't be back.

I was disappointed with my Irish coffee which was made with scooshy cream and had all but disappeared by the time I got it. We stayed on for a few drinks when the srvice went downhill due to the barman serving locals he obviously was friendly with while I waited to be served at the bar. Was a bit apprehensive about here after not managing to get seated in other places and here was quite quiet, also just seemed kind of old and outdated and the menu prices very reasonable which i know is weird but got me thinking it might not be so good. Oh wow the food was all spot on and incredibly tasty. My mussels for starters were amazing, big huge green lipped mussels in a delicious sauce i made sure i soaked it all up with the bread. My fillet steak oh yes absolutely perfect and super tasty with the pepper sauce one of the best I've ever had and only £18 for a fillet steak meal wow. My girlfriends chilli con carne isn't something I'd usually go for myself but she raved about it and i tried it and I'd happily order that myself if i return it was so thick and meaty and delicious. Nice pint too. I've ate in the star hotel nefore too i personally would rate this place much higher than there

First time for us at the Balmoral. In hindsight, a very good choice. Huge and delicious fish and chips. White, chunky haddock in a golden batter. Big meaty chips, crispy on the outside. Served with lemon and tartare sauce. Delicious! My wife's choice was, the fish in parsley sauce with boiled potatoes, peas, and a side salad. Again, mucho yummy. Friendly service to table and promptly served. To end with sticky toffee pudding for me and raspberry cheesecake for 'er indoors was the crowning glory. Well done Balmoral. We always try to reach Moffat at lunchtime for Haggis, neeps and tatties at the Balmoral. It is warm, friendly and pleasant: just the place to visit en route for the North. This time one of our party had steak pie and another roast pork. Portions were generous and the cooking was well up to pub kitchen standard. The bar staff and waitress were pleasant and friendly in the Scottish way. And the Haggis was very good indeed: if you have never had it, do not hesitate to order it here.

Stopped off here for an 1800 Sunday lunch with the family. I had lamb, partner had pork and both had 'Mum's gone to Iceland' feel to it. It wasn't horrendous but we felt we could have spent our £26 better elsewhere. The meat was very symmetrical and didn't feel very local. Other pubs like this we've visited do better jobs for the same price. Don't be too put off as they have a chippy attached to the business and that might be the food to buy as lots of people were doing that

Traditional kind of pub. We ate in the bar area which was roomy enough not to feel cramped. We were made to feel welcome and the service was good. Menu was a typical good pub menu. Will visit again next time we're in Moffat.

originally came up to Moffat to have lunch in another pub but it had closed down so we decided to try the Balmoral Hotel and we were so glad we did - on entering - the pub had a lovely atmosphere and we were made to feel very welcome by the young man who waited on us - I decided to have the Chilli Garlic Chicken as there was really little description of what it it was i was pleasantly surprised when it arrived - over 20 pieces of real succulent chicken in a flavoursome chilli garlic sauce with basmati rice and the most delicious crispy chips i had tasted in a long time. The rest of the family chose the steak and ale pie with glazed carrots, chips and peas and all four of them thoroughly enjoyed it. for dessert i chose the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake with pouring cream - a big chunk of white chocolate cheesecake marbled with raspberry puree - delicious but cloggy in the mouth so i was pleased i had chosen pouring cream. my mam opted for the Apple Pie - a pastry lattice with Apples and sultanas slightly spiced and custard. My brother and nephew had the Sticky Toffee pudding once it had been determined it had no sultanas in it and My Dad chose 3 scoops of icecream - Whisky and Oatmeal, Strawberries and Cream and Caramel - All our desserts were scrumptious and highly recommended - as is the place itself and we are already planning a return visit soon

Was in for a fish tea as I've been in a good few times over the last 20 years but it seems the service has taken a huge dive. Same staff, grumpy older woman and younger man who were more interested in stuffing chips in the mouths behind the bar than giving us service. On arrival we got a quick nod of the head with a long sigh from the older woman behind the bar, sat down and got menus then waited and waited for someone to come over to take our drinks order and food order. Nobody did, so I went up to the bar and the young guy said 'oh, yeah, sorry about that 'mate' while his mouth was full of chips? Rubbish. The portions are getting smaller also but the fish was alright. The whole place is aged and filthy and could do with a good clean spruce up too. They really need to pull the finger out here, especially with the welcome and service. 2 out of 5, just.

We fire up and down this route all the time but have never stopped in Moffat beforeLovely place Someone in the street saw us looking at the menu and told us to eat there as it was very good food- she recommended the steakWe found a table in the courtyard on a lovely day (it's an old coaching inn with tonnes of character and very nicely kept courtyard/flower pots etc) Ordered fish tea and a steak and shared Both really delicious - if we were passing again with time to stop we would certainly eat here again Pretty reasonable prices too at £13 for 10oz rib eye steak and £7 for fish tea

Stopped into the take away to break for lunch on our way to the highlands from England. although a bit dated and dismal inside we could'nt have been given a better welcome. The fish and chips plus curry sauce were the best I have eaten. Crisp and dry chips and the fish firm and white with just the right amount of batter again really crisp and without a hint of soggyness. Don't miss out on this treat

Don't expect fine dining from this place but the food is tasty. We visited for Sunday lunch and ate in the bar, couple of guys providing some entertainment playing guitar and singing songs which was quite nice if slightly random. Service was quick and food was like good home cooked food, no fancy presentation but was tasty all the same.

The old mantra of the customer being right was certainly lacking here. Very rude staff. Portion sizes seem to be decreasing by the month and quality is poor. Plenty of other establishments to try in moffat

Called into the fish & chip shop which is attached to the hotel. A lovely welcome from staff who were very pleasant & chatty. We were only having a small lunch so we just had chips served in a tray & cone with salt & vinegar. They were absolutely gorgeous. So fresh, crisp, golden & good portion size. . Best chips we have had in a long time.

This small hotel in the village of Moffat is well worth a visit as it is the narrowest hotel in Scotland and supplies excellent value for money. Good plain Scottish food with every meal provided by a friendly staff.Right in the middle of the shopping area in the villager so walking distance from all even for the" less fit"

When staying in Moffat recently we discovered that many of the guesthouses did not do evening meals and many of the hotels were outside our price range. The Balmoral Hotel however serves bar meals to non-residents until 9pm when we were there. The choice of main course and price was wide though always reasonable and always clearly evident on the menu. There was a choice of starter , main and later a selection of 4 desserts. Because it was a bar tea and coffee and a wide selection of alcoholic and soft beverages are available. Not a lot available for vegetarians or vegans. What is available is well cooked and very tasty.

We stopped @ Moffat after a 300 mile drive from Berkshire. We were tired, stiff and starving! We dropped into the Moffat Hotel Pub/Restaurant and ordered Fish and Chips "All Round" for our Family Group of 5! The Pub Service was extremely quick and the Food was excellent, with Low Prices and High Quality. We will definitely stay @ this Traditional "Borders" Hotel on our next visit to Moffat which is just 90mins from Edinburgh City.

I stopped here with some friends on a University trip, we were a group of about 20 and they dealt with the the number well. We hadn't booked and all needed to be fed and watered. I had the fish and chips, considering they have a fish and chip shop built into the building it seemed like an obvious choice! It was very nice, I had mine battered, the batter was very light and I enjoyed the home made tartar sauce. The prices were reasonable, I think it was about £8 for a main and a pint of beer was around £3. Much cheaper than what I'm used to!

We eat here at least 3 times per month. The food is consistently good, although we almost always opt for the chilli with chips and rice as it's our favourite! The menu is above-average, typical pub food or home-cooked equivalent, the premises are clean and the atmosphere is great. The staff really make you feel welcome and they are very accommodating. Prices are reasonable. By far the best food in Moffat! You just cannae beat it!
