Great little bakery, for both eat-in and take away breads, pastries etc). Friendly staff. Only criticism is that there are now too many tables in the front space, meaning you usually have to play human Rubik’s Cube to get in or out.

Coffee was fine but surprised at 10% service charge made. Appreciate companies need to make a living but concerned that this will determine from leaving gratuities for staff - first time I've experienced this in a cafe rather than recognised restaurant.

I’m a local lady (all my life been a Bourtonian) and occasionally enjoy the village delights during the quieter season. Post New Year and day off, my partner and I decided to walk the dog and admire the tree before its dismembering later today, with breakfast at The Bakery. Firstly, terrible service. Drinks plonked on the table (didn’t even check who’s was who’s) and totally unhelpful when the wrong breakfast was given to my partner. (That’s for my partner to review). My breakfast, tasteless pale, dry scrambled eggs, overcooked on a slab of white bread with little/no butter (no choice offered with that) and under- ripe avocado. Really disappointed. No flavour. As a local business owner, I won’t be returning or recommending as a place for my clients to go for Breakfast. It wasn’t even busy and there were plenty of staff. Hot chocolate however, was delicious.

A hugely disappointing visit. Despite placing a simple order the experience was disorganized and not worth the price. The bill was initially £44, as we were wrongly charged for two avocado on toast dishes. I had to request a refund of £10 Drinks were placed on the table without clarification, leaving us to rearrange them ourselves. When the food arrived the shakshuka turned out to be fried eggs on toast. When I queried this, the waitress hesitated, saying, “I think it is,” before I had to ask her to double check. The corrected dish eventually arrived but was underwhelming served with plain white bread with an undercooked fried egg on top. With eight staff members managing only 12 customers, the lack of organization and customer care there is no excuse. I will not be returning or recommending this place to others.

Busy spot but well worth the wait if you want to sit and eat. It's a bit of a free for all when it comes to seating so you're not guaranteed a place. However, the sandwiches are so worth it. Really thick bread with a generous amount of filling - would highly recommend!

We were looking forward to having a Cornish pastie here for lunch but unfortunately they had none left hot and their oven was broken so we had to settle for a sausage roll and goats cheese and red onion turnover . They had a nice taste but were not very hot . The bakery was quite busy so I imagine that it’s a popular place to visit , maybe next time when we visit we can try the Cornish pastie .

The cafe is very basic which is fine, however, the prices are too high. Two coffees over nine pounds. We did have oat milk instead of cows and one was decaf but even so that’s the most we have been charged for two medium sized coffees anywhere in the UK. There was even a 10% service charge added to the bill which again was a first for us in a cafe. Staff were very nice but we won’t return. There is a limit to how much we want to pay for coffee. It’s not £9+.

Overpriced , quality poor! I know it was the bank holiday weekend but,a lot of wasps over the cakes, drinks ridiculously expensive! We were charged 40p extra for oat milk, so £2.80 for a babychino,( which a lot of places offer free) £4 for an oat milk cappuccino and 40p extra for a dash of milk for the tea! Definitely wouldn’t recommend

Popped in for some breakfast, queued for 10 mins - not problem - however we waited 20 minutes for our drinks (even the bottled water which could have been given to us straight away.) Our food came out within 5 minutes so had already eaten it by the time the drinks come! The sausage bap was awful, the quality of the sausages were terrible. They also added on a 12.5% service charge (wouldn't mind usually but we had to order at the till ourselves! Will not be returning.

A Brilliant Bakery. The food and coffee were 10/10. Living in Manchester City Centre we are no strangers to paying a premium for things as you do here. The setting is fantastic and you can see why there's a premium, but you certainly get what you pay for and therefore do not mind. The staff were polite and friendly, the shop gets busy and we're queuing out the door but was very well managed. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the village, will definitely return.

Bourton-on-the-Water is a very attractive popular tourist-town in the central Cotswolds. The river Windrush, complete with lovely low bridges, runs right-through the main commercial centre. As you would expect there are many eateries here, offering snacks and meals, so the competition for tourist £££’s is/was bound to be fierce. There are many eateries offering afternoon or cream teas. After looking at several; with quaint décor, and (most probably) waitresses in lacy pinafore dresses; I doubted that these would provide a satisfactory quality snack for our outlay. I was very aware that my Partner was getting weary of looking at prospective places, to find the one that offered good, and fairly-priced wholesome food. My yardstick was simple: were other customer going there, and did it feel like a tourist-trap? Eventually we turned a corner in a back-street, and there it was, this artisan bakery shop café. The queue wasn’t huge, and the place was bustling and busy. There seemed to me that there was a mix of locals and tourists sat at the tables. The food in the glass counter cabinet certainly looked good. There were plenty of staff and they were all busy. Yes … this was the place! We ordered a cheese and ham toastie each, plus a pot of tea for two. The food counter cabinet had showed (amongst other delights) prepared, but uncooked, toasties; the bread was really thick, and the filling looked plentiful. My expectation was that the toasties were going to provide that good quality snack. Seating was an issue, but a very pleasant switched-on young lady behind the counter advised us to retreat to a (we felt dull) anteroom where there were unoccupied tables. We would then be advised, if and when, a table in the main, very atmospheric, dining area became free. That worked for us, but before we were notified about a free table, we saw a party leave, so we grabbed their table before it was re-taken. We sat down, but the table was covered with used crockery and cutlery; so we cleared this to one side of the four-seater table, where it was promptly taken away. Our tea soon arrived and we let it steep, as we do prefer strong tea. Our plates of food arrived after a few minutes and the toastied did look good. The very chunky bread was lightly toasted and packed with the ham and melted cheese filling. The plate was completed with a small leafy salad and some crisps. This was good tasty rustic food and thoroughly great to eat, and not at all expensive at a total of £25.52 - really great value for a snack that satisfied. Service was really friendly and efficient, as befitting a family business. As I left I saw the young woman who served us and gave her the thumb’s up for what was an excellent quality snack with memorably attentive service. We’ll be back.

This bakery and cafe has a great vibe. Staff were busy but cheerful and efficient. The bakery display is all very tempting! We bought quiche, a sourdough loaf and Victoria Sponge cake. The quiche was genuinely the best we've ever tasted in the UK and equal to that we've tried from artisan bakers in France; crisp, light pastry and packed with a delicious filling. Perfect! The sourdough was excellent and the Victoria sponge a real treat (and we're quite fussy!). It's worth paying a bit more for top food quality. We highly recommend and will return when next in the area.

Walking in Bourton early on Sunday and fancied a coffee, I was really pleased to see the Bakery on the Water open. Walked in and asked for a coffee, the girl took my order, There was 1 other person in the cafe and 2 staff serving. The one lady served the other person, very slowly and the girl who took our order wandered around and eventually started to make what we thought was our coffee. We were completely ignored and felt quite awkward to be honest. I have to say it was painful to watch how slow the coffee was made. The girl seemed like it was a first day and the lady seemed to not know we were waiting even though we were right in front of her. She was just messing around and singing. Anyway, 14 minutes later I asked if our coffee was coming as my wife had to be somewhere. I got a sarcastic reply and felt quite insulted. Then finally given my coffee. Looking at other reviews I guess we drew the short straw when it comes to staff as there are lots of happy customers but some very similar to our experience. A Real shame. I'll be checking who's serving if I go again... IF.

She was very helpful and when we arrived gave us one of the best cream teas we have ever had (and we've had plenty!). She and her staff were very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere in the bakery on a rainy February Tuesday was bustling and cheerful. The bakery is located just off the High Street and right next to the River Windrush as it makes its picturesque way through the town.

I grew up in Bourton when this was the wonderful Norths Bakery. I haven't been since then as the village tends to cater for tourists not locals these days. But my family still lives in the area so I thought I'd take a chance and call in this morning to grab breakfast for them. I ordered three bacon, sausage and egg baps and two Christmas toasties. Despite being the only person waiting (though people came and went with instant orders), I had to wait over twenty minutes for the toasties, which meant the baps were cold by the time I left. Coincidentally, the toasties were also cold as they had been sitting on the kitchen side from even before the baps and, despite someone checking what I was waiting on, only one lady thought to connect the dots and exclaimed "oh my god these have been sitting out for ages, I'm so sorry." An acknowledgement which was appreciated. The cost was £39 (just under £8 per bap) which seems like daylight robbery for what we got, particularly as there wasn't even any egg in the baps. Safe to say, I'll leave this place to the tourists.

Absolutely shocking! Popped in to pick up a few snacks to eat by the waterside in this beautiful little village. The shop was very busy so I took that as a good sign, I purchased 2 small pasties and 2 small sausage rolls and was completely stunned when I was told my total was £18! £18! I asked the server whether I had been given the correct bill and was assured I had. £5.80 for a pasty and £3.20 for a small sausage roll! I paid but left feeling very shocked and a little violated. Not a pleasant experience and sadly only mediocre food. Such a shame as I walked past another cafe/bakery in the same village just afterwards with better looking food at a much more reasonable price. If only I’d seen that place first.

What on earth has happened to this lovely bakery /cafe?? Prices have exponentially increased at the same time quality has reduced. I bought a ham salad bap to take away... It cost £5.70...maybe a £ dearer than last week. I'd have taken it straight back only that I had driven 20 miles before opening. I ditched it because the bread was hard and stale, the tomato obviously old, and the ham, which used to be so fresh, and cut off the bone, was wet, and mass produced. Shocking! You've lost a customer here. Not returning.

The server came over to clear the table and without even saying hello proceeded to tell us this was not how they do things here, we must wait until we were allocated a table from the queue when we place our order. We left. This may be how you do things however there are polite, welcoming ways of conveying that message which would not make your customers feel uncomfortable and awkward. We won’t be returning.

Went early in the morning before the crowds started. Great selection and we liked out coffee, tea, scones, and croissant. We were able to grab a table out back which was the highlight!

Great choice. I think they overcooked the croissants the day we went but I'm sure that isn't normal. Will ho again tomorrow and check it out .

Picked up a couple of coffees, pasties and cakes for lunch to eat by the stream. The pasties were tasty but cold , much prefer them served warm. The cakes were delicious , our choice were fresh cream Victoria sponge and almond petal cake. The coffee was very good too . Quite expensive though , the above for take out was just shy of £20 but do think anywhere in Cotswolds is dear. Lovely staff and clean toilet facilities on site for customers.

Had a waterside brunch on a lovely autumn morning. The all day queues should tell you how good this place is. Great price, quality & staff.

Lovely cafe, filled with charms.Sat in the backyard, we changed table 3times due to the wasps. I see wasp catchers that are so close to the tables hence why so many wasps. Wasp catchers needs to be hung away - preferably outside the courtyard boundary…. Makes sense to keep wasps away. No toilet sign to be seen so couldn’t use the loo. Thought it was up the steps but staff only. Couldn’t go back indoors - had ‘no entry’ sign. Best scones!

My wife, I and two friends originally wanted to sit out in the garden to have tea and cake, but after seeing the difference in price for eat in and take out we decided to order to take away and eat on the grass beside the river. The queue was not particularly long, but it took an inordinate amount of time for us to get to the front of it. This situation came about due to the very slow staff none of whom seemed to have any oomph about them - one of whom spent more time on her mobile than serving customers. We were actually going to give in and go somewhere else, but everywhere we passed had queues, but I'm guessing none were as slow as this establishment. Even when we got served it took quite a time to get our drinks, and even then one of them was incorrect. Not a place I would use again when visiting Bourton.

We arrived here after a two hour drive from Kent and queued to get in so we had high expectations, they were justified, what a lovely place, food was delicious and we sat outside by the little river at the back in the sunshine and it was wonderful.

So yummy pastries and cakes really enjoyed every bite… could go on and on… however try to get there before they close someone told us they’ll put all food on special offer as they want to get rid of it! Now that’s a bargain 😄

We visited in August 2021. There was quite a large queue to order, which took around 20 minutes. Once we ordered, staff were friendly and polite. We sat in the outside garden, having ordered two cream teas. The scones were lovely, and we were given a good portion of clotted cream and jam. Unfortunately we were very quickly surrounded by a lot of wasps which, although there is not much the bakery can do about this, did spoil the experience. The gardens themselves are really pretty, situated near the Motor Museum. Would definitely return.

We visited this cafe quite early on a Thursday morning having eaten here before about 3 years ago and I remembered it as a really nice place. I have to say that this time, we were really disappointed with both the food and customer service. We were 4 adults and a baby in a buggy so we opted to sit outside to prevent causing an obstruction inside with the buggy. I was called back when I started to walk through to get a table and told in no uncertain terms that I had to order before sitting! I explained that I wanted to make sure there would be enough room and left my daughter to order. She was then asked what table number she was at……!! I am puzzled to know how we could provide a table number if we have to order BEFORE getting a table??Once we were finally seated, the food came quite quickly but the egg was overcooked and bacon greasy. So reading the other reviews it look as though we were unlucky. I suppose everyone has a bad day but we won’t be back.

We visited this beautiful bakery, where the staff were so pleasant and helpful. We had cream tea. The scones were so so light and delicious.. we love our cream teas.. and must say this one was very high up in the list.My husband had a cappuccino and that came out nice and hot too. This place is a must for people visiting Bourton on the water. The manageress was so kind, just like her team. We sat outside. Beautiful location, delicious food.

We wished we lived closer to this amazing bakery. We found it difficult to choose from the wonderful selection of cakes and treats on offer. We didnt purchase any bread but the bread choice looked really good.

This is the perfect cafe offering good coffee and an excellent choice of both savoury snacks and cakes. We enjoyed the Cappuccino and Flat White with delicious moist Victoria Sponge and a cheese scone . It was just £13.

Ordered cream tea. Late afternoon and scones were a bit dry. Tight on cream and jam offering. Was given a free loaf of bread which was nice. Great location next to the river. Nice staff.

Visited this Bakery a few years ago as Trip Advisor recommendation so went back on this visit to Bourton. Great little cafe, lovely staff. Decent cuppa, cups and saucers! Lovely eclairs, as it was late in the afternoon offered a free loaf of bread. Gratefully received and having toasted this morning!

Lovely little bakery. Had fresh coffee and pastries to take away and was still warm when returned to our air bnb. Despite restrictions lifted, staff continued to wear masks and enforce social distancing, which was reassuring.

As a regular visitor to Smiths we have always had consistent and fantastic service. This includes when we’ve eaten at the mobile van at Park Fair, Great Tew. The quality of all ingredients and products are exceptional. Our favourite spot for burgers and we’ve tried a lot, from London to Cheltenham! The scotchy is a favourite, I like the heat so never too hot for me. Tots are also amazing. Really surprised to see some of the other reviews, if you want a great burger and you’re in the area this is a must try spot. Ps love the brothers founding story as well!

We ordered Fish salad each and it was the freshest salad I've had in a restaurant, absolutely delicious 😋, staff very kind very friendly, we had two cream scones with jam and clotted cream, they were home made scones and lovely too. Left there full and happy! Would we go back there again? That's a big YES! from us.
