We booked afternoon tea , and we arrived early and were greeted warmly by the reception and they told us where our table was , We sat down just before 300 pm , and we ordered our tea and we ordered a glass of Sussex sparkling wine , that was good , I was interested to know it came from the Bluebell vineyard. The tea came as well , but we had to wait another 20 mins before the food arrived, The sandwiches were ok , and had 4 different fillings and we could order as many as we wanted, Then we tried the scone, we were given one each , but were rather large and looked to me to be overcooked, I tried to cut my scone in half and basically it just disintegrated , it was over cooked and so dry inside and hard on the outside , Then tried the cakes , there were 4 different cakes including a macaroon, I really don’t like them , the chocolate cake was ok , then I tried something that was a a small doughnut with a jam filling was unfortunately had a very hard upper crust, where again had been overcooked, whereas the bottom was undercooked, the fourth cake was a sponge with blueberries and a cream topping, But was in a paper case , never seen this before when having an afternoon tea, it was ok Overall the service was ok , sandwiches were good, scones very disappointing and cakes not up to the standard I would expect to get In such an establishment and paying over £50 a head

We visited Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa 18-August-2024 to 20-August-2024. This is a wonderful unique hotel complex in Medieval style. It consists of a main reception building and several separate buildings in very peaceful grounds in an equally peaceful location a very short walk from a stony beach. Trees, bushes and lawns abound. The hotel has a helipad and boasts an elegant spa, in a separate barn style building, with heated indoor and out door pools. We booked in advance, full body massages which were excellent. Swimming in the indoor pool was a luxury and pleasure. The hotel boasts an excellent restaurant. We had dinner here on both our days and thoroughly enjoyed every dish we chose. The quality of food served here is consistently outstanding and praise worthy. Its worth noting that its significantly expensive to stay here. Dinner in the restaurant can be expensive and drinks can dramatically swell the bottom line. Our room was lovely with a very comfortable bed, shower and bath. However, our room needed hoovering and dusting to a much higher standard. This is a magical hotel and a stay here , the use of its spa and restaurant is highly recommended.

We had a very relaxing and pleasant dinner here in this unique establishment. Staff were extremely friendly and we were made very welcome, from our arrival to our departure and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It’s a very unstuffy place and we formed the impression that the staff enjoyed their work and were happy. Dinner was very good indeed. The dining room is charming, food is well-presented and cooked skilfully. Our ravioli starters were well-filled and what was interesting, was that after the Initial bland taste, subtle flavours came through, rendering the dish a success. My grey mullet main had the same effect and was quite delicious. My companion pronounced her duck excellent. Cheese was well- kept with a good selection. The only hiccup (hic), was my rum baba dessert which was perfectly textured, but I genuinely thought that the chef’s arm had slipped when adding the rum to the baba! One could have become intoxicated by the smell alone, but the strength didn’t prevent me from finishing it! We really enjoyed our bottle of Le Closerie which complemented our dinner well. The wine list isn’t huge and it’s very competitively priced. As I’ve said, staff are charming and with just a little more finesse, I’d have rated our dining experience as excellent. We would have liked to be offered more bread and we would have liked our water topped up without our requesting this, but these are minor issues. We had a lovely evening eating very good food in delightful surroundings, served by great staff. We’ll return.

We have visited this hotel many times over the past 20 years and it has always been very special, wedding receptions and special occasions included. Sadly the most recent is what I think will be our last. What has happened here! There was always a warm welcome at Bailiffscourt, that has certainly gone. Very abrupt go to the restaurant. Fortunately we knew where it was but we wanted to sit and enjoy a drink while looking at the menu. We had arrived early to catch up with our friends. Took forever to be served with drinks that we had to go and find someone to take our order. One of our group order a sparkling water. They only do large bottles REALLY! We could not give our order until we got to the table another unnecessary messy change. Food was good but appropriate for the £10 discount. No bread was offered and when we wanted to order our coffee to have in the lounge that was greeted with “Oh okay” we had to order it in the lounge and that took ages. Nothing came with the coffee even a sad mint would have helped and at £6 each a very sad joke. Expresso straight from a 45p capsule from a machine in Nespresso cup. What has happened to a tiny piece of homemade shortbread. Sadly this all needs a fresh look at its standards including very scruffy toilets. What a disappointment.

All 6 items that my wife and I ordered were delicious. Also, the staff were attentive and friendly and helped make the overall experience a very positive one. The setting is idyllic. There was actually a howling gale on the day of our visit, but I can imagine that the place looks spectacular in sunlight. Only minor criticism is that the drinks are somewhat pricey.

Booked a spa day for my husbands birthday present. We thought we would try bailiffscourt as not tried this one. We had an extremely enjoyable day. The spa facilities are excellent and well maintained. The spa is large however feels extremely personable. All the staff were extremely friendly and our treatments were excellent. My husband usually complains about massages not being firm enough for him but charleigh was very firm which he liked. I had Danielle and she was too very professional and I thoroughly enjoyed my treatment. Only criticism about the spa day which is the lunch. We were told we could eat in our robes over in the Hotel however we were the only ones and felt quite out of place and I think people eating lunch there wondered why we were in our robes. May I make the suggestion so to put people eating in their robes in one place and others in another. The food was delicious. Make sure you order sides though as you may still be hungry. Whilst the food tastes delicious, there isn’t a lot…especially for a hungry pregnant lady.

We loved Bailiffscourts afternoon tea, we were fortunate enough to have been given a perfect spot in the sunshine of the central courtyard. The tea was well hosted , delicious and we loved the tea selection. We were allowed full access to the grounds afterwards which we made the most of us. We would highly recommend and plan to return soon

We booked the evening sunset spa packages which included a treatment and a two course dinner. We received a warm welcome from the spa reception and upon checking in they mentioned that our dinner booking for 7pm was quite early and did we want to move it to a later time to have more time in the spa which we did. We spent time in the spa area and then went for our treatments. Very enjoyable. (Only comment was massage bed I was on needs replacing as the cover was broken and there was exposed foam. Not so hygienic). We then went bac into the spa and received our glass of fizz whilst sitting in the outside jacuzzi. A few more lengths of the pool and sauna, then changed and off to dinner. We got to the restaurant a little earlier than booked, but they were happy to show us to our table. The service was impeccable and the food was lovely. This was a nice treat for us and most enjoyable.

Booked this Hotel as we have two dogs and wanted a dog friendly hotel so we could have a lovely break away with our pooches. We were highly impressed with this hotel and found it was the fabulous stay and exceeded expectations. Firstly when we arrived we was greeted by the lovely reception staff who also made a fuss of our doggies (which they love) then shown to our room and it was perfect. It was lovely and clean and had everything we needed including dog treats for when we arrived (They went down very well) We took a wonder around the grounds which is beautiful and well maintained. The spa looks stunning however we didn’t use as we had the dogs but will defiantly be back to make use of that. We had lunch and drinks outside and the service was wonderful along with the food. We had breakfast included which we was able to enjoy in lounge with our dogs. The location of this hotel is perfect. It’s a 5 minute stroll to Climping beach which we went to a lot and half an hours drive to West Wittering beach and that is also dog friendly and beautiful. I couldn’t recommend this hotel enough. The staff are all so friendly and lovely to talk too and so were the guests. Thank you to you all for making our weekend so great. We will be back :)

I had booked this place months earlier as a belated birthday celebration for my father. We dressed up smartly (pity that some of the other guests didn't!) and arrived precisely on time having found a spare space in the free but busy car park. Unfortunately things didn't start well. As on some previous occasions, we had set our hearts on having a pre dinner sherry in one of the many cosy side rooms. On this evening, however, the manageress was highly apologetic but said that all such rooms were occupied, some by guests who were still around after enjoying afternoon tea there... But we could order our aperitifs at our dining table if we wished. We didn't... Anyway, the rest of the dinner went off quite well. The menu comprises some very innovative dishes of the type that I would perhaps falsely classify as "nouvelle cuisine". Very artfully put together in relatively modest quantities but with intriguingly, imaginatively high prices. I had a raw salmon starter and three/ four small pieces of red lamb as the main course. I finished the meal with the English cheese board which was nice. We didn't go for bottles of wine, preferring to order by the glass - mainly Chilean white Chardonnay and red Cabernet Sauvignon if my memory serves me correctly. Service throughout was correct, speedy and professional. In fact the restaurant seemed to be quite full and there was little time for any idle chit chat with the guests. All in all this was a correct, evening dinner in wonderful medieval styled atmosphere. By the way, it was only created in, or around 1927. Finally reference should be made to the bill where the three courses cost 56,50 pounds sterling, plus the drinks plus a 12% discretionary service charge added to the bill.

I booked a mid-week overnight spa break for my daughter’s birthday. Upon booking I informed the hotel that my daughter was vegan due to health issues and would require a menu to accommodate this dietary requirement. Disappointingly, when we arrived for lunch there was no vegan menu or option. When we questioned this we were told we should have booked every meal we wanted to have as a vegan requirement. My saying this request upon booking clearly wasn’t enough. We were told we could have squash and leaves as a starter and broccoli as a main. I wasn’t expecting this from a 5* Pride of Britain hotel. To avoid the same happening the following day, I specifically asked if there would be vegan food and I was told that there would be a vegan option for lunch and breakfast. However, breakfast was the same- no vegan option and we were told to just select the bits we could eat from the vegetarian option. Lunch - we were told that as we hadn’t turned up on time - no time had been suggested or advised the day before - there was no food for my daughter and there was no chef to cook her anything! By now we had had enough. We were both upset by all of this and it was particularly upsetting as it was meant to be a special treat for my daughter who had missed out on a 21st birthday celebration last year due to Covid. So, if you’re able to eat the food it is lovely, but if you have a specific requirement, expect to go hungry.

As part of a spa day not a package deal I had to book lunch in the resteraunt otherwise, myself and my friend would not have been able to eat. The Spa day was from 9am to 6pm with our treatments at 4pm to 5.15 ish. My expectation was to be able to eat from an Al la carte type menu a light lunch etc. Instead it seemed that the resteraunt that day where only catering for the people on the Spa package deals. The menu consisted of a 2 or 3 course selection with supplements of up to £6.00 for a chicken dish..!! Priced from £25.00 per head. We both had 2 courses. The crayfish cocktail and a Ham hock terrine followed by the Oxe cheek bourginnon. Which tasted and looked superb. Sadly if I broke down the two dishes I felt the prices and size of serving were extremely expensive for the meal. But if you had the spa day deal with the lunch included you were given lunch and glass of local bubbles. Which is a reasonable offering. We also where offered un be known to us initially the glass of bubbles, sadly we were then informed this was not on offer but they happily charged us on top for the drinks. It was not until my friend questioned it and I became very upset as the waitress took it upon herself to argue and make snyde comments to us in passing, which caused more upset to myself and my friend. This was all deeply embarrassing. Another waitress came in snatched the bill from the table and took the drinks of the bill. I was in tears hands over my face my friend was angry as this was my treat and she felt very upset for me as we left. No apologies no explanation. Overall a very expensive lunch made worse by an unprofessional rude member of staff. Do not go to lunch if you do not have a spa day package..!! London 3 michellin star prices. This was NOT a good experience.

We visited the hotel 15-17 of August. The place itself is very pretty but the rest was very disappointing ..Not sure even where to start with the review. We paid 1000£ For 2 Adults and 2 year old twins. It feels as if there is no chef in the kitchen. Breakfast is awful - no fruits apart from melon (it is summer, you can buy strawberries anywhere ...) you can only order plain omelette (they ran out of cheese two day in a row so could not get an omelette with cheese), the croissants taste as if they were baked a month ago and they keep warming them, no salami or cheese as I mentioned previously, you can get porridge or yogurt and that’s about it ... lunch options also very limited , no fruits, no vegetable salad or smth - pasta, toastie, fries (which does not taste nice) Dinner again both nights exactly the same menu, very limited, no salads as a starter. Poor food quality in general which is very disappointing and at the check out we were asked to pay £25 (!!!) per child for dinner as apparently kids dinner was not included and tasteless steak kids portion is worth £25. Apologies but even in Ivy which is a decent chain kids portions are cheaper. We asked for a bottle of milk one morning and the milk that was brought was off so we could not give it to kids. Now to tool service or I would say non existent room service. Our room was cleaned at 3PM after I asked several times, the room itself was dirty when we arrived, I found someone’s hair in the sink.I don’t mind paying if I get good food and good service. What we experienced is an absolute disgrace and lack of client care. We ended up paying £1,200 in the end For 2 nights with lunches and priceless kids steaks added and it feels like an absolute waste of money. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone - please be aware of the above when booking.

As it was a visit during half term, the spa was more busy than I had expected however did manage a nice swim and use of hot tub and jacuzzi. The sauna was fresh and clean, the steam room very nice. A very disappointing visit to Bailiffscourt Hotel. The price per head for the best afternoon tea on offer being £44 per head was sadly lacking. Other local venues offer better value and quality. Surprisingly, no choice of sandwich filling was offered. When presented, the bread used for the finger sandwiches was already going hard. The fillings were not tasty. The small cakes were bought in rather than made in-house and tasted rather processed. The scones were generous, light and tasted the best of the food provided, it was just a pity that the tiniest amount of clotted cream and preserve were offered. During our tea, two staff members walked through the room with large white dirty bins without lids - quite surprising and not what we would expect from such a venue. Overall a poor outing and one we wouldn't repeat. With so much competition in the area, Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa has much to improve upon.

Really disappointing. I booked a pedicure for me and my daughter as a birthday treat. I asked for us to be together and was asked to pay the £126 which I did.I also asked if it would be possible to have either a glass of fizz or a cuppa together whilst we were having the pedicure and was to,d this would be fine. The duration was confirmed at one hour.On arrival we were given literally a few seconds to choose a colour of varnish and told not to bother with the swatch book as all the colours were not available. Then to my surprise my daughter and I were taken off to separate rooms. I obviously questioned this and to my surprise was told that they did not have the facility to do two people together. The pedicure was done lying down so would be difficult to drink wine or a cuppa.,there was no option of gel polish and I was told we needed an extra 45 minutes at the end of the treatment for the nail polish to dry. After painting the first foot, the beautician commented that the polish was nearly finished and was too thick. She said that she had no more and then poured something in to dilute it.After the pedicure I was directed to a room to wait for the polish to dry. It was dark and cold with no heating on.I can honestly say that this was not the pampering luxury visit I’d hoped for, and paid for.I did phone to discuss my concerns and was told the spa manager would call me back. After several days I then phoned again and someone finally came back to me.Poor show. I really couldn’t recommend this to anyone.

I am a coeliac so need to eat gluten free , this was NO PROBLEM here I missed out on nothing at all . Coffee in one of the beautiful cosy lounges was HOT AND FULL OF FLAVOUR served with homemade cookies for my husband which he said were fabulous , and a wedge of lemon drizzle cake for me ... gluten free ... sandwiches for lunch along with a couple of G n T’s in the garden in beautiful sunshine , extremely relaxing . Pre dinner drinks and nibbles then into dinner , candlelight , cosy , GREAT food , service , choices , everybody all spread around the restaurant so not sitting on top of each other . Breakfast in bedroom ... extensive menu hot and cold , choose what you like and time slot . All hot when arrived and totally on time with hot coffees too . All sofas in lounges are comfy and squishy , and plenty of them . Bedroom we had was in main house and large , had everything we could possibly need , extremely clean , plenty of towels, bathrobes , fireplace , massive bed very comfy . All staff we had contact with were very friendly and professional. All in all a fab weekend in a great hotel by the sea and the countryside , we will definitely return .

We had a one hour massage (Danielle was excellent) and a half hour facial. Our lunch was delicious . Me monkfish my friend and sandwich with a glass of fizz. We also had tea and scones included. Why we come here despite a one hour drive is because the spa is purpose built .The building is lovely, the pools inside and out are great and they have an outdoor jacussi. Uninhabitable room, unhelpful staff and one ruined night before my wedding! I booked my night before my wedding here as a safe choice that being such a high quality hotel how could my special night be anything other than relaxing and memorable - how wrong I was! I had booked two rooms (and not at all last minute but as soon as I had confirmed my wedding venue). When we (myself and 2 bridesmaids) arrived we were shown to our rooms and one was unbearably damp - I have breathing problems that are only set off by mould and damp conditions. Firstly, not only do you not expect that a hotel that is supposed to be of such a high standard would possibly think it was acceptable to put any guest in a room that is damp. You do not expect that of somewhere you pay £50 a night let alone £250! Secondly, the way we were treated was bordering on completely rude and certainly not helpful or welcoming. No one even apologised and I was basically told if we didn't like it we could leave - my bridesmaids took the damp room so I could at least breathe and get some sleep but the whole experience was utterly devastating and rather than feeling relaxed and pampered for my wedding, I was upset and stressed. Thank you Bailiffscourt, for what was a terrible experience. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

There are so many wonderful things to say about the Bailiffscourt Hotel and Spa, the environment is inspiring, the spa very welcoming and restful and the food and waiting staff in the hotel impeccable. All of these things a recipe for a wonderful Birthday Celebration success. BUT...

Good service, especially in the restaurant who had picked up on my booking note about my partner being vegan. We had a really lovely stay and the spa treatments were great. The spa on its own isn’t worth coming for unless you have treatments as not a huge about there and fairly small. The surroundings are fairly good for a trek to the beach but take wellington boots as it’s very muddy. Only issue was that they don’t have a great lost property system - we left a phone charger in the lounge area and not a great one so fairly sure not high on someone agenda to steal but the following morning it had gone and couldn’t be traced. Not a huge issue just felt housekeeping would have had a process in place.

We had been for their special Carols & Christmas lunch last year (2016) and really enjoyed it so booked again. It was clear that corners and costs were being cut. The carol service was brilliant as before, but last year's gluhwein as we went in to the chapel was replaced this year by coffee. The meal in the restaurant was served rather quickly, making it feel a bit hurried, and the good three-course meal we remembered from last year was this year only main and dessert. The main course of turkey etc was fine but the dessert, a mincemeat flan with frangipane topping, was served cold - we asked for it to be warmed, it was MUCH bettter that way and I cannot imagine any chef worth his salf wishing it to be served cold. Only one glass of wine was offered (again, there was more last year) and when we asked where coffee would be served we were rather shocked to be told we would have to pay for it. And £9+ for a pot of coffee was excessive. Very disappointing and we will not bother again;this is not a cheap event and felt very much like mass catering rather than a pleasant dining out expereince.

We took our grandchildren for a stopover at this hotel as it was marketed as family friendly, unfortunately it was anything but. Although there were times put aside for children to use the pool it was much too deep for many children at 1.4 m. It would have been more honest to say that small children couldn't really be catered for in this regard. As regards catering for children I must say the 'tea' offered was of good quality and very tasty but there were no real facilities for a proper sit down table for them. We eventually found a table in the bar much to the tutting of many of the elderly people staying there. Also, there was a distinct problem with strange rules. Apparently we couldn't order a sandwich in the bar during the children's early dinner period yet we could if we ordered it from our room. Very odd. The service was very slow in every part of the hotel, so much so that it took some time to actually get someone to even look to serve and more time still to actually bring the drinks. The beer was passable the prosecco warm and horrible. Children weren't exactly welcomed in the bar area either.

We came here for an afternoon tea with our teenage daughters. The food was lovely with a good selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes. Unfortunately, the service was extremely slow and the staff did not make us feel welcome. We asked for another pot of tea and after 30 mins we had to ask where it was. After another 10 mins the tea arrived but no milk!!! Lovely setting and great food but we have been put off returning.

We can here with a pamper package for a spa morning with a treatment followed by lunch. The spa facilities are really good with a pool and jacuzzi both inside and out. The outside facilities are heated. We both had massages which were just awesome! Lunch was amazing, really lovely food, albeit small portions, but everyone was so friendly and helpful. Even though we were only there for a morning it felt like we'd been away for a week when we left to come home!

I booked celebration afternoon tea for a special celebration for a friend by email, closer to the day i phoned the venue to discuss making the day a little extra special by maybe having a glass of bubbles and some light table decoration to greet us on arrival hoping to make the afternoon a show stopper for my friend to really remember as such a special memory, unfortunately instead of helpful staff who go the extra mile i was met on the phone by a very rude lady who laughed at my suggestion and told me that nothing could be done to make the afternoon special, that i was not to bring anything like table confetti/sparkles as this was "too inconvenient for the staff to clear up" (really?! A few sparkles which could be easily swept off by hand) and that they could not offer anything at all to make the day a show stopper on arrival. The lady was actually so rude to me that if it hadnt of been such short notice to book elsewhere i would have cancelled my booking on the spot! The waiters on the day were very polite and the food was nice but nothing amazing. Its a pretty building but a shame some of the staff are so stuck up and rude. Wont be going back. Other posher event venues have been much more helpful in my experience!

Dinner on Saturday night. Pricey but worth it for the experience of dining in such impressive medieval (style!) surroundings. Staff were friendly, fun, attentive and seemed to really enjoy their jobs. The food wasn't the best of the best but was delicious nonetheless. We had quail for starter, cod and lamb for main, then souffle and shortbread as desserts, with petits fours and coffee at the end of the evening in the courtyard adjoining the restaurant. We then finished by heading towards Climping beach (a short walk/drive away) to round the evening off.

Lovely surroundings, beautifully lit, well chosen wines and good food, except for the fact that I did have an upset stomach the next day. This I had to put down to perhaps the seafood not being as fresh, or its not being kept chilled for as long as it should, since my husband and I had exactly the same food and drink - tasting menu and wine flight, except for the seafood dish, which my husband had substituted (having had shell fish poisoning in the past). Luckily it wasn't poisoning, but still an annoyance considering the cost of the meal, and it was most certainly a fairly major inconvenience the next day!

Bailiffscourt is a beautiful venue for a Sunday Lunch. The set menu is good value, but the wines are a little on the expensive side. I took my husband on his birthday so that we could have a quiet lunch together. This was spoilt by the waitress who asked 8 times if everything was OK. I wouldn't normally have counted but after 5 times we took on a bet to see how many more times she would ask. We were beginning to wonder if we had missed something, and that the chef had used the wrong sauce. Please train your staff better, once is more than enough, twice is an interruption. Sunday lunch has a small set menu. After a well presented starter of smoked salmon, my husband unfortunately chose the fish and chips, this was really only sufficient for a 5 year old. My poussin was delicious and there was plenty to give him half. This was followed by a yummy chocolate pudding and cheese. It was our first time at Bailiffscourt, but we will book again.

We have eaten in the elegant Tapestry Restaurant with its crisp white tablecloths and well-spaced tables on many occasions and also outside in the delightful little courtyard and have always had wonderful food and excellent, friendly service, particularly from a number of French waiters. The menu is always interesting and changed on a daily basis. We have also had a light lunch served in one of the delightful, cosy little lounges which are beautifully furnished with fabulous floral arrangements. It is an enchanting and unique place to visit or stay, as although built in the early 1930s, it has the appearance of a Tudor/Elizabethan country house and was designed and built using reclaimed materials to create this atmosphere and style. As soon as you approach the hotel/restaurant through the lovely grounds with peacocks roaming around and which run down to the beach, you know you have come to a very special place. The modern Spa which is separately situated in the grounds has lovely heated outside and indoor pools and several relaxing treatment rooms. My two daughters and their husbands stayed in the hotel to celebrate their wedding anniversaries and my husband and I have stayed in one of the charming little thatched cottages in the grounds and we all hope to stay again before too long as we all love the Bailiffscourt experience! !

The hotel and spa buildings are very charming and photogenic, you get the feeling of going somewhere special. Inside you get the feeling that you are stepping back in time and so it is strange to find that the place was only built in the previous century. But it definitely does not feel fake or contrived. It does however scream "Weddings & Functions" and I am sure it would be a wonderful setting were I in the market for that again! The only real criticism I have of the place, and I am saying it here and now to get it out of the way is that the reception area where you return to to pay for your meal is oddly or awkwardly organised. The staff were great but the physical layout of the area mean that you feel cramped in andare having to sidle out of the way and stepping over or around luggage. It did not seem particularly efficient to me especially as we were mixed up with people from the Spa and hotel guests trying to book in.Sat in one of the ante rooms with a drink waiting for our table was nice but old furniture is not always comfortable. I like the surroundings but would not havewanted to stay sat for long to be honest. The meet & greet and drinks service was good, getting us relaxed and ready. There are a number of dining rooms and the one we were shown in to was nicely presented. The food and drink. Unfortunately as a driver I cannot comment on the drinks but I wished that I could as the list looked good. We had a choice of two starters, three mains and two deserts on the lunch time menu. Both of us opted for the same, a starter of mozarella, grilled peach and pea shoot salad, a main of mackerel with shrimps and cucumber and garlic sauce with a side dish of spring greens and new potatoes. The desert was a Breton Shortbread with caramel sauce and ice cream with praline. All of it was lovely, beautifully cooked and presented and at £25 each for the three courses something of a bargain.I have read people saying that it is over-priced for what it is. Well I am not sure that I agree with that. I will say that although the starter was nice it really was extremely small and could have been double the size and still would not have touched the sides and if I am to be really picky the mozarella pearls were definitely too small and lost there flavour with the dressing. But the dressing, salad leaves and peaches were very nice indeed. The main was really nice, again perhaps a little small but you kind of expect that. I would rather have a pretty plate where the chef had thought about the balance of what goes on the plate and how it looks rather than having a piled up high dogs dinner. Better to be finishing the meal wishing that you could eat it again but knowing you couldn't really rather feeling stuffed and not being able to clear the plate! I like the dinner but I needed the desert! I do not usually eat desert because I am diabetic but I had one. I absolutely loved the shortbread, sauce and ice cream. It was sweet but too much so and I really enjoyed it. I would have loved to eaten it again but knew that although it was dainty looking it filled the gaps left by the other courses and left me just enough room to move.My mum and I left here really happy to have eaten the meal and I have made a mental note to come back again with my wife next time.

we have eaten here on numerous occasions, most have been very good, though one meal was ruined by lively children gallivanting around the restaurant being completely ignored by their ignorant parents, in that instance the staff moved us as far away as possible, We find the place quirky, charming, and the food excellent, albeit a little pricey, but if you are after something special in the area in our view it ticks many boxes. The bar where you wait for your table is something out of the '20's but considering the place is actually less than 100 years old, it looks medieval, and pretty authentic too. The food is in general excellent, and the wine choice is fine, befitting such an establishment.

We could not fault the food - fine dining indeed. The only criticism was the fact that the 'local sparkling wine (£14.50 glass)' offered alongside the French champagne was pricey and disappointing. Being lunchtime and only wanting wine by the glass, the Clarendel was also expensive at £15 per glass, all making a simple but enjoyable lunch expensive at £150.

First visit to the Bailiffscourt restaurant as part of a spa package (birthday treat). The positive aspects of the evening was the delightful welcome we received from the young man who greeted us at the spa. He could not have been nicer - so helpful and charming. The pools are lovely and the treatments were nice too - friendly masseuse. We were looking forward to our dinner which was part of the package but we were very disappointed. My husband started with the pate and was given two tiny pieces of toast, I had the risotto which was very nice but again hardly more than a tablespoon of risotto - the only other vegetarian starter was pea soup. I had the one and only vegetarian main which was aubergine - very oily but you could taste the blue cheese which was tasty but a little too salty. My husband had the John Dory fish which was well cookedalthough not the largest portion but rather bizarrely was balanced on top of three fried onion rings!! We didn't bother with dessert or coffee as after paying nearly £10 for one bottle of water and a bottle of beer we were feeling a little ripped off. We did mention to the receptionist that it would have been nice to have had a vegetarian choice for the main course. This comment was met with a stony silence - so although we would have been happy to leave a tip had she shown a little interest we decided not to tip.We would definitely love to return to the spa for an occasional treat as the location is quite beautiful but would not visit the restaurant again.

A group of ladies enjoyed a good lunch in the wonderful ambiance of Baillifscourt. I have been coming here for several years and love the comfortable, cosy surroundings in the numerous lounges. Service is friendly and unobtrusive - no sense of urgency or pressure, just charm and courtesy. We dined on the set menu which had three good options for each course. All the food is freshly cooked and well presented. We were plied with beautiful homemade breads whilst waiting for our starters. Tomato soup was pronounced delicious by fellow diners and my own starter of goat's cheese beignets was superb. The mains were equally good - my fish dish was creamy and warming. The highlight was the dessert of a special shortbread, ice-cream and salted caramel - a fabulous combination. We then enjoyed tea and coffee with fudge in the sitting room in front of a fire. The cost was very reasonable as we had a discount voucher. A great place to bring a special friend or someone you want to impress or just meet up with friends for a relaxed occasion. We popped in to Bailiffs Court with no booking on a Friday in September. The food was really very good, the service excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. So much so that we went again last week with friends for Sunday lunch. It was very poor and we were embarrassed to have dragged our friends a fair way for a mediocre mealThe prawn cocktail was average. I could have done better myself with frozen prawns and a jar of Hellmans. For mains, we had a confit suckling pig which we were told came medium rare - was that ok? - we queried medium rare pork, especially confit pork, but carried on. We had roast sirloin which was poor and we were not asked how we wanted it cooked and we had 2 risottos which were not risotto at all but rice with mushrooms. I have to say that two puddings were excellent, but the two cheese plates were probably the poorest we've ever had in a restaurant The waiter didn't know what they were.So overall despite the good experience first time round, I can only say average on average. The second visit, service was poor we all felt the waiters were trying their best but were inadequately trained for an expensive restaurant, the food was poor and not worth the trip. The setting is delightful and the blow along the beach after the meal cheered us all up.

This medieval style place was created in the first quarter of the 20th century. However, everything around you has been kept to the original style in minute detail. Once you enter the premises , you are enveloped in the Elizabetan era.You are welcomed by several sets of people. You sit in an enormously comfortable sofa, while ordering your food. When the food is ready, you are escorted to our table. So far, this is what you get in most of the high end establishments. What sets this place apart is the food that they serve. Mum was given a three course lunch for two at Bailiffscourt as a birthday gift. Having lived in the area for more than 30 years, this was our first visit. We were excited to see what the experience would be like. There is no doubt that the location and main buildings are superb, if you have traditional taste. It is a little disappointing, however, that more modern buildings have been added, some of which blend more successfully than others. Nevertheless, the overall initial impression is a positive one.Initially, we were greeted at reception and led through to the lounge. Here we were met by the hostess and offered drinks. We instead chose to go through to our table. The service is courteous and efficient. The hostess chatted as seating us and said this was her favourite restaurant in the area with the best food. I disagree. There are other more affordable options with superior food quality.Arriving just after 12.30, we were initially the only diners. This does not add to the ambience. When we were joined by two more diners, these were sat directly next to us in spite of the empty restaurant. Why? This meant I could overhear their entire conversation for the rest of the meal. The wine was very expensive. Champagne began at over £11 a glass and half bottles of wine began at £22. This was unfair, as full bottles began at just over £30. Locally produced wines from Sussex were £38.The choice of starters was limited. Three options were included in the Table d'hôte menu. Leek and potato soup, fish cakes with wild asparagus and hollandaise sauce and beignets of pork belly with carrot and sesame dressing. I was surprised and a little disappointed that two of the three options were fried. The pork was not particularly tasty. The three main courses included risotto with saffron and pan fried fillet of grey mullet, lamb belly with lambs kidney and sweetbreads plus a vegetarian option. We selected the first two of these. Both were more flavourful and were an improvement on the starter. We were also recommended a side order of green beans. Portion sizes were sufficient. For dessert, I chose a seasonal berry pavlova and Mum had clotted cream ice cream with raspberry coulis and ginger tuile. The third option was a cheeseboard which carried a supplementary charge. The deserts were generous, but for me the flavours were just ok.Coffee was available as an extra (£2.95), but when poured had coffee grounds in the bottom of the cup. Petit fours were also offered, but at £4.95, we declined. I guess that maybe I have been spoilt by food standards in London. However, having eaten at many other restaurants locally in Sussex too, this is not all. Bailiffscourt is expensive for what it is and I think could do much better. It will probably be another 30 years before I would eat there again.

A delightful venue with very good food and service in a beautiful setting - and the downloadable voucher from the website (25% discount on lunch) makes it all affordable. This is a very traditional hotel / restaurant in beautiful grounds and close to the sea so it is a perfect place to bring visitors from London or abroad. It also has a helipad if that is your choice of transport! The service was excellent, friendly but efficient. We all ate from the set lunch menu which is priced at about £18-20 and it gave enough choice - the servings are not huge but personally I think that quality wins out over quantity every time. My dessert (which was not part of the menu) was really exceptional, a wonderful passion fruit soufflé. By the way, it is also possible to come for afternoon tea, or just a cup of coffee and if the sun is shining the gardens are a lovely place to sit and while away the afternoon.

Simply over-priced for the quality offered. Ambience and surroundings are superb, but at this level of expense the quality of both cuisine & staff training are unfortunately pretty shoddy. The following comments are based purely on the prices charged, for which a generally higher standard of both cuisine and service should be expected. At 30% less we would definitely score this a straight 5 stars.Pros:- Wonderful, atmospheric and stately surroundings with beautiful antique furnishings and decor, offering lovely and prestigious ambience- Romantic and impressive setting for a special occasions- Excellent wine list with prices to match most pockets (though not much for those looking under £35)- Actual preparation and presentation of each dish is pretty good - 9/10 for execution from an evidently highly competent chef- One particularly helpful and efficient (mature, English) serverMenu cons:- Menu changed only once per season with a daily "chef's menu". This will be fine for visiting diners, but any hotel residents may find themselves struggling after a couple of evenings- Menu is very heavy on fois gras (one starter and 3 out of 7 mains) which may please some but will offend many and severely restricts choice- "mushroom" risotto had literally no mushroom ingredient apart from two halves of cep as a garnish. Rice was however absolutely perfect consistency and beautifully seasoned. Just poorly described- Duck liver parfait should have come with a little Melba toast, or at the very least some bread, to counteract the richness and to give texture. The few tiny croutons were simply inadequate- Delicately flavoured (and perfectly cooked) scallops ridiculously accompanied by not one but TWO strong pickled vegetables! Totally incongruous and most puzzling when so many other alternatives would have been more compatible and sympathetic- "chef's desert" ran out by 8.30pm leaving many disappointed guestsService cons:- Very poor staff training is immediately apparent:- Coats not taken till asked- Warm and incorrect aperitif beer glass- Wine glasses over or under-filled throughout the meal- Very sporadic delivery of food leaving some people sitting waiting for others- No explanation of dishes on arrival- Taxi order forgotten leaving us standing waiting for too long- Bill (check) not brought to table even when asked, with settlement required by walking to reception!- Coats not returned - needed to find them ourselvesThe price at £50 per head before drinks is commensurate with some pretty competent establishments. The quality of cuisine and service here simply do not justify the price, unless of course you value the amazing building and surroundings at £20 each, which I guess it probably does justify.Come for the wonderful ambience, but definitely not for gastronomes or those who appreciate (and expect) a high standard of staff training and competence.

This was certainly the case on our most recent visit with a couple of friends. The service is quietly efficient and attentive. The fact that the restaurant is located in a beautiful medieval style hotel in its own extensive grounds all combines to create a wonderful and probably fairly unique atmosphere. This is one of the few places where you can still feel that going out for a meal is an 'enjoyable experience' worthy of dressing up for. Certainly somewhere to consider for a 'special occasion'. I concur with the other reviews I have just read and consider this to be 'first class' and thoroughly recommended.

On the south coast of England, tucked out of the way, my wife and I flew into here for lunch today, and instantly felt relaxed. We enjoyed a warm welcome with drinks prior to Lunch, and then after lunch sat outside in the wonderful garden in mid Nov as we managed to pick the best flying day, sun was out and no wind, lovely. Back to the hotel / restaurant, well we shall be back soon to spend a weekend, as its the 'place to relax'. Our visit was too short, but the food and service was wonderful, its a place you go to just spoil yourself and is a perfect retreat. If you like walking, there is plenty of beach and other outdoor areas to go. Enjoy

We drove over and hid away for a few hours sipped wine. We had 3 courses each. Plus cheese and port to finish. Quite pricey yet worth it. Escaping from the masses. The lamb is amazing and belly pork lush. One thing if I wanted to complain. Please offer more rice dishes rather than potato. Staff good. Could be better. Team leaders supberb. And how slick is the table turn around. This is the 3 rd time this year and we will be.back. ignore the prices for a nice night if you have the means too........

We have visited Bailiffscourt many times over the past 20 years and have never been disappointed. We recently decided to have lunch out, on our anniversary, and as we only live a few miles away we thought that it would be good to go back. We were delighted that it was still as we remembered it. The staff are courteous and polite, we were looked after very well and our meal was superb. We are taking the family there for an evening meal to celebrate Christmas and we have already booked!. Go and have a look - you won't be disappointed.

The staff are so friendly, the rooms are second to none and the food goes with out saying is amazing. I can't recommend the lamb enough.

Went today for a couple of coffees, after waiting 5 minutes some young guy who had been folding napkins eventually wandered over looking most disinterested. I asked for 2 coffees and he said ' can't do hot drinks '. No apology or reason why. Needless to say with 2 other places nearby, West Park and The Waverley, where you feel welcome will not be coming back here.

Not eaten here yet, but looking at the menu there is only one vegan choice.....
