what a fun spot , great company, excellent pool table, the staff are fabulous. I would highly recommend for a great night out.

The room was dire and in desperate need of maintenance. When we booked it stated breakfast included, this later appeared not to be the case and it seems the landlady sometimes will cook breakfast, sometimes not. All a bit odd. A lovely old building and amazing history and character but shocking state of repair. Our friends rooms were even worse and had I had their rooms I would be asking for a refund, I think we got the better of them.

Great service, kitchen was closed when I visited but the staff were accommodating and kindly made me a burger. Look forward to popping back soon.

Had a few meals from a table of 2 and table of 9 when family visited been excellent and value for money also friendly service and the bonus of having games room with pool table in great condition

Going to the bacon arms was a brilliant experience and is brilliant for all types of people. I have given 5 stars ✨ n everything because there food was great I absolutely loved it,there service was amazing fast and the lady serving us was wonderful and a great feature is the fact that it has a separate room with a great sized pool table and a nice dart board. My experience here was great thank you very much.

Staff was friendly. Room was poor but for a place to lay my head n price was what you would expect. I saw other people's rooms looked nicer. My room was ugly stain on carpet been there a while . Over all place to stay 5/10 il meet them in middle maybe next time il try get a better room . Plenty of free parking round back . Might use them again in future who knows !?!

Had a nights stay here with my family and pet pooch it was spot on free parking at the rear staff very pleasant and great value for money 👍👍👍

The first room had black mould on the ceiling. Eventually given a room on the front on the building. Not only did we have to put up with traffic noise the room next door had their TV loud until 5.00am . Hence no sleep for us , staff said they would sort it for the following night. No way we couldn’t believe the same was happening loud TV this time we managed to catch the bar staff before they left for the night. There are no staff on duty over night or no emergency number given or displayed. The place needs a total revamp and to say it comes under the Marston group it needs monitoring and health and safety needs addressing . Sorry can’t recommend, eventually got money back after a lot of hassle seven no eight weeks later.

They don’t do food at present. One of the worst places we have stayed in. First room had black mould on the bathroom ceiling eventually ended up in room 6 on the front. Not only did we have the road noise to contend with the room had their TV on very loud until 5am in the morning. There are no staff on duty over night no emergency number to contact which Im sure people staying do not realise. Staff said they would sort it for the next night . No way same again this time we managed to get a member of the bar staff before she left. Who had to call in additional help to sort out. sorry we couldn’t recommend this place it needs a total revamp. They are under the Marston group which should be monitoring their premises a lot more closely. We eventually got a refund about 7 weeks later.

Went today for food. The barmaid looked like she should be working in a strip bar. Very inappropriate. She was wearing a crop top with a skirt that showed her backside if she bent over. Not impressed.

Room very tired and smelt, shower extremely dirty and showed signs of mould as did the area behind the sink, glass mirror in bathroom at risk of falling off, no tea or milk and sugar in sachets rock hard. Not informed that the chef was on holiday so no food available, however after seeing how unclean everything was eating at another nearby establishment was not a problem. Staff were friendly and this is great location for easy access to lots of amenities around the town. This is the third time of staying here and each time it has been disappointing with how dirty looking it is, will not be staying again.

Great location value for money ! We loved Newbury and the surroundings .Room clean comfortable and derivable appreciated the fan as it was a warm evening. We stayed when England won the semi final all quiet by late eve great we would use again!

We booked a night. young lady at bar who booked us in very friendly & welcoming. Sadly the room was very disappointing. One curtain hanging off, a step up to bathroom was difficult, no slip mat in shower. Husband had shower & advised me not to have one, as shower head blocked & water hit him like needles. I had to have a body wash in sink which had no plug ! Difficult… Felt springs in mattress & woken at 6 am by heavy traffic🙁all in all not a great stay. But the coffee machine was great - delicious coffee.

Stayed here for a week in their renovated, clean and tidy room. It was very comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Booked Bacon Arms for 2 night stay for 3 single rooms. Two of the rooms were outside at the beer garden and the other was actually around the back of the building in the car park. The rooms had dehumidifiers and diffusers placed throughout to mask the smell of damp which wasn’t working. The blinds were also broken, as can be seen in the attached photo. When I explained how anxious I felt about the proximity to the beer garden, the manager said she totally understood and said if I contacted the booking agency she would happily not charge. Unfortunately she is still refusing to cooperate and I have been fully charged almost €400. The manager is moving premises in Newbury and it is obvious she doesn’t care about the mess she’s left behind. Very disappointed. Will not be returning to this or her new premises.

wot can I say from start to finish this hotel is not wot it says. the room's are dirty even the cups in there are dirty. bathroom stinking shower curtains are fit for bin . would not rate this hotel. people rowing and shouting middle nite . spent most of our time out even left early.

Decent Guinness, fairly priced. Good atmosphere and friendly vibe.

I don't stay in these pub style places regularly, but can't fault it for the ratebi paid. Friendly bar tender showed me personally to my room. Very basic but all functional. Clean and practical bathroom. What looked like a thin mattress, in reality, slept well, plenty of pillows. WiFi required loads of info to be logged, don't like that. Great location in town at the bottom of the main high street, near the clock tower. Didn't take any pics as I was late for the theatre and then forgot! Depending on the price its an alright choice.

Maria and the team were friendly and welcoming. We ended up having a light lunch but as the pub got busier we liked the atmosphere and before we knew it , the whole afternoon evening had passed! Great vibe and the entertainment was good too!

We went for our Boxing Day Meal. Food Delicious, Service fantastic, especially Marie who made sure we had a good time.

Went for family gathering. Ordered bar food. Understandably less choice available due to being just after Christmas. Ordered potato wedges with pulled pork.(pulled pork not available) so changed to Cowboy Burger. Expecting chunky chips but was served fries. (Overcooked, so we're more like a crisp) Burger was so inedible that 4 people tried it and decided to abandon even trying. Overall really poor, and total waste of money.

Beautiful room, quirky due to its age but I loved that. Slight issue with the hot water but quickly resolved. Had a king size bed where I was crawling from one side to another, it was so large! Clean linen, nice selection of tea and coffee. Slept very well. I didn't have food due to having to be out and about. Nothing to complain about and superb value for £65

We had a lovely time at the Bacon Arms we looked after by the lovely Maria :) Great service And atmosphere will be back .

At the end of September we held a small family gathering (about 35 ) at the Bacon arms. A lovely spread was ready and waiting for us as arranged, both hot and cold buffet with plenty of tea and coffee. Everyone commented on how nice it all looked and then tucked in. They thoroughly enjoyed it with several people going back for seconds and some even thirds! There was very little left at the end and no one went hungry. Apparently, the little cakes were 'fantastic' and the overall amount of choice was brilliant judging by the comments made to me. The bar was readily available for those who wanted an alcoholic or soft drink. The tea and coffee flowed the whole time we were there. When I made the arrangements, they couldn't have been more helpful with suggestions and tweaking things to suit. I was asked about the type of music we would like and this was played at a nice level which allowed everyone to mix and chat without being deafened but you could still listen if you wanted too. Matt, Maria and their team were friendly, efficient and extremely helpful. They made the afternoon flow perfectly. The locals were friendly , readily chatted and made us feel welcome in their 'pub'. There was a small garden area outside with seating where a few enjoyed a little sunshine or a cigarette (or both). The parking and access were very good too. It was agreed it was a good venue especially for those that needed access to the M4, A34 etc to travel home. I think Matt and Maria have achieved a lovely, friendly atmosphere with good, well-presented food and we wish them well. Having seen the menu, we Awill be back soon for lunch! Thanks to you all.

We stayed at the Bacon Arms and wouldn’t again while it looked as if it had been cleaned or our visit there was obvious lack of attention to detail and neglect of the rooms The floor in the room was slanted and when you went to the toilet you had to go down hill The floor also moved when you walked over it causing you to feel unsafe The stairs were steep and trying to take any luggage to your room was dangerous While we was escorted to our room there was no offer of any help

Three ale taps but no ale available, no apology, card machine not working properly. Generally a bit basic.

Had a very fine burger and a couple of perfect pints at this lovely historical pub. It's right in the centre of town and has it's own car park, which is extremely handy. Must give a shout out to Maria and Matt who are very friendly and chatty landlords. Will definitely be back when I'm next in Newbury!

Traveled from Wales to Newbury to watch Lord of the Rings the Musical at the stunning Watermill theatre. The Bacon Arms is a 40 minute walk away, ideal (although we still got a taxi for just £9). My friend and I stayed in a room with 2 single beds. The room was a perfect size for us, with a coffee machine to boot! I’ve worked in pubs and theatres for 12 years and my friend used to own her own restaurant and I must say, the service was exceptional. Matt and Maria lead a fantastic team and the chicken gravy with the southern fried burger was fantastic. A great selection of drinks. A pool table that takes contactless payments, which we made full use of, and a darts board. The restaurant is a lovely size and with a small stage which I imagine is great for the various events held there (sadly no karaoke the night we stayed, maybe next time). All in all, we had a fantastic time, even managed to grab a few games of pool with Matt after the show and he is a really genuine and lovely guy. I cannot recommend this place enough! Thank you Matt and Maria!

This pub is an absolute gem! With incredible food, an impressive drink selection, friendly staff, and a prime location, it's a winning combination. From the moment you step in, you're greeted with warmth, we'll definately be back to book a room. A must-visit for a fantastic pub experience.

This is now my pub of choice when in Newbury. The beer is well kept and reasonably priced, but what really makes it is the relaxing atmosphere and cheerful staff. The courtyard in the back is a bonus.

A great pub near to the centre of town with plenty of parking and space inside. Loads of character and the new managers are making great headway with updating the place. Pleased to hear some decent music and got great service from the staff. Definitely worth a go, especially if you haven’t been in a while (like me).

I am honestly so amazed with my experience within the bacon arms not just with the family feel (even the locals was greeting us when wee walked in) but the food is to die for I ended up having the mixed grill and I was actually shocked how big it was, loads of meat (which all tasted lovely fresh and actually cooked correctly) chips and grill veg and for £15 it was definitely worth the money My wife had the fish and chips which was also big in size and good value for money my wife said it reminds her of the fish and chips she use to have when she was a child. For the kids meal they were definitely large in size and had loads of options to customise which is good as our soon is a very picky eater We also had a cheese cake to share and was very tasty even our little man was stealing of our plate All in all very nice experience will definitely come back when we are in the area again

Nice food although the pie crust was a bit hard only one girl serving doing food checking in hotel guests serving at the bar but she was brilliant to be fair to her .

Ideal place to get head down for a night good parking for residents pool table food only on to certain times .we did manage to get our bags in early witch was good 👍

Good place to stop if in need of a room for the night. Large room with clean ensuite. Beautifully soft topped beds for a great sleep. Car park on site for guests. Spacious bar and dining area, and well tended outdoor seating amongst gorgeous flowers.

Fabulous find in Newbury. I received such a wonderful warm welcome from the new managers Matt and Maria. Their staff members Daisy and Jordan (the newly appointed chef) were also super friendly and knowledgeable. The locals were a delight to chat to and they allow dogs too! The garden was a great outdoor space for sun worshippers but also plenty of shade for those that prefer it! With beautiful flower baskets made locally adorning the surrounding private fencing and twinkling lights in the evening. They have a great space for functions at the back of the pub and a separate room for games inc pool! TVs are a plenty for watching the news and some sport. The food was top notch. The burger so tasty I didn’t capture a picture before devouring! I heard the roast was pretty good too! A wonderful experience in a welcoming, clean, relaxing, friendly pub. I will be back!

Staff, landlords, locals are all so welcoming. The beers are clean and crisp, the whole place including rooms upstairs are clean and it smells lovely and homely. My 5 year old was very comfortable in the pub, Daisy behind the bar was friendly and made us all feel at home. Thank you all for your hospitality, we'll be having another 4 hour drive to see you all soon.

I was ready to rate the room five stars but pulled out the bedside drawers (to get a better socket to charge my phone) and was met with ripped wallpaper, half an inch of dust and a spider’s web complete with resident spider (photos attached)....

Didn’t get a chance to try the food but the beer and service were excellent. Locals were chatty and welcoming as were the publicans. Good location and a handy car park at the rear (registration required on the terminal in the pub or pay at the machine). Great value rooms, I will be back!

Spent a lovely two nights at the Bacon Arms, in a great value clean room, in this characterful 17th century building.. staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming and there’s a real community feel to the place - couldn’t believe the new owners had only been there two months! Perfect location from which to explore Newbury, just on the edge of the town centre, convenient plentiful parking, highly recommended!

I haven't been here before, so I canly think that the Bacon Arms were having a bad day. I was part of a corporate group, and it's disappointing to report that although their service was good, unfortunately, the meals weren't up to standard. Undercooked chips, no sauce that was supposed to accompany a steak meal, and they had completely forgotten my meal, and when I eventually got it, it had clearly been rushed and subsequently spoilt. The front-of-house frequently apologised, and you could see he was struggling. We all felt for him. His service was more of a 4*, but I felt I couldn'tscore more than I have for the overall experience. I'm assuming this is a one-off, but it was certainly poor on this occasion.

Lovely pub, well located in town with ample parking at the back. DOG FRIENDLY. Shared a drink with my wife and we were very well looked after throughout our visit. Thank you!

We visited the Bacon Arms over the long weekend and spent a relaxing afternoon sitting in the sunny beer garden. The new owners Matt and Maria were really lovely and welcoming. It truly feels like one of Newbury's hidden gems. We'll be going back.🌞😎

Had fish and chips and scampi and chips ,food was cooked spot on ,had a few drinks ,the team are so welcoming they have a laugh with you ,a lovely environment to be in ,keep up the good work guys.Clean and tidy .

The spacious and welcoming Bacon Arms is well worth a visit. New landlords are bringing in some great cask ales (a favourite was the Gravity 3.4%), while the Shipyard is also very good, with a decent low alcohol version available in bottles (0.5%). The new menu is extensive, and looks good (though we didn’t have time to eat), while friendly staff help foster a nice atmosphere to the place. We will be back.

Dropped in on a Saturday afternoon and found the place very welcoming with a friendly atmosphere, and there's a great covered courtyard out the back.

Stayed at the Bacon Arms on route to Southampton for 3 nights, Matt and Maria are the new management and have great plans for the future; they are a lovely, friendly and welcoming couple. Just 42 miles from the cruise docks so an ideal stopover

Staying tonight as a stop gap before going on holiday tomorrow. Room is cosy and homely, welcome was very welcoming and polite. The food was absolutely delish!!! Top notch chef!!! Thanks for the warm welcome We will be back again.
