Aun Restaurant in Hackney

Had lunch here by chance a couple of weeks ago. We were lucky to get a table as it was pretty much full Nothing but good things to say about the food and service. It was all excellent and great value for money. If you are uncertain as to where to eat in Stoke Newington then I’d put Aun pretty high on my list. This recommendation is given without reservation!

This is a little hidden gem that I highly recommend. I have eaten here twice (once about two days after getting back from Japan) and the food is excellent. Kaiseki in style but that makes it sound more formal than it actually is. A very chilled vibe and a good way to escape the normal London chaos. Short multi-course menu but haven’t had a bad dish. Staff very friendly. Arigatou!

Went with a couple of friends and had a lovely and tasty time. Staff were friendly and helpful and the stand out dish was the Miso Aubergine....umami packed and so delicious. Totally recommend :-)

Aun is a brilliant restaurant. I loved it so much I've now been three times and each weekend I'm wondering if it's acceptable to go again. The menu is really straightforward with three set menus to pick from. Vegetarian, fish or meat. The dishes are so tasty and filled with flavour. We loved the scallop in breadcrumbs and the aubergine is incredible. If you're thinking of going definitely go!

There are big pros and a few cons to this place. On the plus side… The decor and ambience is really nice, chilled and tasteful without being super casual and it’s clearly popular The set menu is a great way to try food one may not usually eat There’s a vegan set menu and a few other dietaries too, not always easy to find The food is beautifully presented On the flip side… The service is good, but in this type of place a little explanation of the food and a recommendation on the drinks would be very welcome, none was offered at any stage, we found ourselves thinking back to the menu to try and realise what exactly some of the dishes were, and reading along the sake set leaflet as we drank The food is a little basic, the aubergine (on the vegan set) was delicious, and the main course had some vegetables I hadn’t eaten outside of Japan, but otherwise it was unadventurous and at times bland On that basis it’s expensive, while it was great to be able to have a vegan set menu and a tasting range of sakes, there are Japanese restaurants elsewhere in a similar bracket with more interesting and far more flavoursome dishes. We spent around £140 on dinner for two with drinks, a dessert and service

Looked amazing but it tasted not great. Actually left a lot in my plate. Couldn’t stomach it with such strong sticky flavours. I eat a lot of Japanese food this wasn’t Japanese nor was it anything else better. Expensive mistake won’t go back. Lovely staff though.

Very delicious authentic Japanese food. Some great traditional sakes to choose from (the plum wine was especially nice). Warm and attentive service from the waiter Luca. Really enjoyed it and would recommend to anyone.

Forse non sono ancora pronta per questo tipo di ristorazione. Sono vegetariana e personalmente, nonostante l'accuratezza, la ricerca, la presentazione nell' impiattamento, non riesco a comprendere £9 a piatto. Non nego che l'esperienza e' stata piacevole ma vista la mancanza di carne e pesce, non mi pare corretto far pagare £3/5 in meno rispetto ai menu' per onnivori. Se siete abituati a esperienze culinarie di un certo livello e amate provare nuovi ristoranti con prodotti di prima qualita', Aun fa per voi. Per un mio giudizio personale, basato sulla location, prezzo, qualita' pietanze e servizio, mi fermo a un 3 su 5.

We loved the food here- we have two different set menus. However the plates were rushed out so quickly that if we hadn’t slowed it down we would have been done in 45 mins. This is far too quick for a 5 course tasting menu plus desert. I think they should allow slightly longer per table eg 1 hour 45 mins and not rush customers

Very good fried chicken, with rice and curry sauce. The range of tea was great. Meal was let down however by a tiny portion of slaw. Don’t understand why there was so little of it for what they charged. Other than that - decent food and nice place. Somewhere to go for a quick bite, as you wont be in there long.

Went with high hopes but was hassled by the waiter to order the moment we arrived. Dishes flew out so quickly had to ask them to slow down. If we hadnt put the brakes on i think we would have been out in 40 mins. The dishes were ok but nothing to get excited about. Hot saki be was good.

The first two of the five courses were really good with my pumpkin soup and poached aubergine very tasty but then it went rapidly down hill with the nadir the almost tasteless aubergine paste sushi. I might not be sufficiently sophisticated to understand the cuisine but for me it is an acquired taste that I won’t bother acquiring. As for the service, it took being off- hand too close to rudeness for my taste.

We ordered the 5-star course diner to take away and eat at home. It was marvellous! Each course was delicious on its own and put one after another was really an experience. Highly recommend it!

Delicious and inventive food. We got five veggie dishes to take away, and each one was memorable. Would definitely eat here again.

The waiters need training or more experience. However we still enjoyed our food despite a few minor mix ups.

The food is extremely well ballenced. We had option between 3 menus and I had the vegetarian, my partner the gluten free. All courses were tasty and just enough. I am not a big eater. The price is correct for the quality and the service...

The food here is delicious and the staff are very friendly. But it was slow. Do not arrive hungry - we had to wait 1h15 minutes between arriving and actually getting our food.

Some of the food is tasty but much more of it bland, tiny and twice the price it should be. The restaurant was not busy but for some reason service was very slow and fairly incompetent. Waiters didn’t know what dishes were.

Cooking is good, inventive and flavors were fairly authentic for a Japanese fusion menu but each portion is just a mouthful so the notion of a ‘sharing’ menu is kind of lost when there isn’t enough to go around. Left hungry and unlikely to return.

Visited last night and was amazed at the tapas dishes had 2 of everything! Even had room for plum wine and ice cream. Absolutely recommend a visit to this amazing restaurant.
