Ashoka Indian Restaurant in Sheffield

We had a fantastic dining experience at Ashoka on Eccy Road in Sheffield. Our group of six was warmly welcomed, and the staff made us feel right at home with their friendly interactions throughout the evening. We started with crispy poppadums and an assorted pickle tray, which was the perfect introduction to our meal. The curries we ordered were delicious, full of rich flavors, and paired perfectly with the soft naan and fragrant pilau rice. To top it off, they surprised us with mango lassi served in flutes to celebrate a special occasion, which added a truly memorable touch. Highly recommend Ashoka for anyone looking for an excellent dining experience with great food and even better service!

From first walking in to leaving everything was perfect, the staff were really helpful and friendly, the food was was stunning and the choice was fantastic.

A very small family run restaurant, service was impeccable. We chose our dish based off the waiters recommendation and you should see the size of the prawns i was service... massive!

The food was very delicious in this restaurant. The service is perfectly fine but the food had little product. Also there weren’t any desserts.

Visiting the UK from the US for the first time. Landed in Sheffield and there's a reason Ashoka came up highly recommended on the interweb - I've never had Indian food quite like this. It's a combination of authentic, modern, and reminiscent of something my favorite aunties would make on only special occasions - only better. Get the Karamelized Kashmiri, and if you like it spicy, the Taxi Driver Curry. They probably trademarked them for a reason! Staff was amazing, warm, and welcoming. Remembered me and greeted me personally after I returned for a 2nd non-consecutive night - because I just had to make the 1.5 mile trek on foot to eat here again on my 4 night stay. I may just come back for a 3rd go...

Great atmosphere and excellent service

Ashoka was so inviting and had great atmosphere! The booths are a bit small but great for a cozy meal or date night. From the poppadoms and chutneys the meal was off to a stellar start, everything tasted homemade, fresh and flavoursome. The Kashmiri curry and mixed grill were also superb - lovely charcoaled flavour on the grilled meats and a deep complex, umami flavour in the Kashmiri chicken curry. The naan and rice were incredible too, perfectly executed. It felt like a really special meal and not one I’ll forget soon. The service was also great and we received lots of tap water. The beer was one of the best I’ve ever had - it went perfectly with the meal.

The food was authentically south east Asian... out did many of the high end restaurants I have been to... just exceptional flavours... I wish I could go to Sheffield more often cuz I would go there on a regular trying each and every dish on the menu 😍🤤 Pitty they don't do a desserts menu...

Had the most lovely, delicious dinner here this evening! All the servers were so friendly and kind, the food arrived swiftly and it was absolutely fantastic. Everything was so flavourful, and for a really fair price. We will definitely be returning to try more things on the menu!

I organised a work night out to Ashoka with a fairly large group. Everyone's food was fantastic, not one member of the group of 14 had a single complaint about any aspect of the meal. The staff made everyone feel completely relaxed and really wanted everyone to have a great night out, they also made every accommodation to make the evening as efficient for us. We usually try different restaurants, but the feedback was so good from all members of the party we will be returning here again for our next one!

There is a comforting reassurance about Ashoka. It never disappoints.

I can't express how disappointed we were with the meal here. We had travelled a far distance after being recommended. Starter had no flavour whatsoever. Cheap pickle tray, lime had no bite at all. Mains were just overly spicy but with no depth of flavour or profile. Overhyped and overpriced. Condescending waiters. Spend your pennies elsewhere.

We booked a table for four to celebrate my daughters birthday and we had a brilliant time. The food was amazing, the service was perfect and we can't wait to come again. My favourite was the taxi driver special and it was one if the best curries I have tasted but lots of choices and everyone in our party loved their food. So, highly recommended and very definitely worth a try.

The curry was really disappointing with tough chicken and a watery sauce, and the rice had this odd, stodgy texture. The whole order had a weird smoky smell, the warm raita from the pickle tray was just not right, and it was very expensive for what it was. I even felt a bit queasy afterward—the whole ordeal was just odd, which is disappointing because this place used to be fantastic years ago.

Possibly one of the blandest meals I’ve had for years. No flavour at all and it’s caused an upset stomach all evening. A supermarket curry has more taste.

Asoka on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield is a true gem and a beloved institution since 1967. My recent visit was nothing short of exceptional. The food was superb! I had a reyt spiceh curreh, which was hot but incredibly tasty. The flavors were perfectly balanced, making it a delightful culinary experience. The pairing of dishes is excellent, with lots of local produce factored into the menu, showcasing the best of what Sheffield has to offer. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, and you can feel the rich history and tradition in every corner. The service was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall wonderful dining experience. I highly recommend Asoka to anyone looking for an authentic and delicious Indian meal in Sheffield. This place truly stands the test of time!

Ordered via Deliveroo... Took an hour to arrive. On ringing the restaurant, I got attitude. Food was terrible - far too oily, cold, naans were store bought, meat was rock hard and stone cold. The meal cost £80 for two or us. Outrageous. Never again

I went there on last week with my friends and the menu offers a wide variety of options, and everything we tried was delicious. I especially loved the creative twists on classic Indian dishes. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and food. Excellent service by staff.

Though the atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, the food was lacking in the bold flavours I would expect of authentic Indian cuisine. The dish I chose was marked as “Hot” but I couldn’t feel any spice. I’m sure there is a good audience for this food but it’s certainly not me.

Very crammed. Good food, but disappointed with the service. They leave a machine in front of you literally demanding a tip. I won't be back. Sorry.

I ordered a takeaway and I was really disappointed. Curries are not up to scratch, no flavour, no spice, even through I requested medium spicy, and really really watery. I called the restaurant and explained my disappointment and that spending over £70 just seemed like a complete rip off. I don’t mind spending the money if I get what I pay for and I enjoy my food. The man I spoke with said something to the effect of ‘next time you come, we can sort something out’ I was a bit confused because why would I come back? I said this wasn’t really good enough and I expect a refund. He said they couldn’t give me a full refund but that he’d refund the curries. So basically I paid £30 for rice and naan bread which I didn’t eat because I ordered those to enjoy with my curry! Quite a sad affair really. I shall not be ordering from here again.

Have visited a few times in the last and had good experiences but on this occasion had possibly the rudest and most confrontational waiter I have ever encountered. Would mark 1 out of 5 if it was for service but fortunately the food itself was nice so doesn't feel fair to score that low. Sadly they have last a group of customers based on this experience, we won't be visiting again, there are other Indian restaurants in the area who treat customers much more appreciatively.

Really rude manager!! On 06th April after a long Saturday we had planned to go there for dinner at 7:30pm. We had booked a table 3 days prior. But on that day, things changed and after an unexpectedly tiring trek we ended up having that day in peak district we weren't in the situation to sit in a restaurant and have dinner. We decided to cancel the table and thought we could order a takeaway away to head home. To be decent to called 45 mins prior our booking time to inform the same. When we informed the manager on phone call he seemed so disturbed and literally said "I was suspicious you would cancel the table. It's really not good. Anyway, have a nice day. Bye". We stopped him and said we would like to place a takeaway order. What he said next was the most bizarre. He replied "What, are you serious? Oh my god, I don't know what to say. Give me moment , ah oh god! Ok I can't do anything, give me your order". We were so perplexed with what he said, but still went ahead with giving our order for 2. His response was "that's it?". We said yes and He said it will take atleast 30mins. We really regretted placing the take away order! We went there after 35mins to collect our order, and found the same person on the reception. When we went in and attempted to remind our order, he literally stopped us midway and rudely mentioned he knows and asked us to wait. We then confronted him that we did not like the way he spoke to us over the phone and that he was rude, and that we were decent enough to call and cancel as unfortunately our situation changed. All that he would do is constantly cut us off midway every sentence and say "no problem, have a nice day". His response was no unrelated and it was clear to us he is not going to accept his undoing let alone apologizing for the way he spoke. It had been 2 years since we visited the place and hence zeroed down on this place. After this incident, we are never going back to the place and never recommend this place to anyone!

My boyfriend recently moved to Sheffield and in trying to show him some of our legendary dining establishments, i knew Ashoka was a must! The staff were lovely, the food was incredible (special shout out to the hendos puree which blew my midlands boyfriend away), the vibes were good and the service was top notch as always. If you're wanting to visit - book in advance.

Best Indian Restaurant in Sheffield.

My wife and decided to go after a wet Easter Monday. Unfortunately due a lack of communication we both booked on line for 6.30. To avoid them having a empty table we decided to go for a pre dinner drink and pop in and tell them of our mistake and cancel one table. I spoke with the man in charge who was sat at their booking computer detailed our mistake, which he then checked and cancelled a table , we duly said we would see them later and left for a drink. Imagine our surprise when we returned to be informed that both our tables had been cancelled and just given to walk in and the 1st table available was 7.30. Understandably this was unacceptable and despite our protestations the manger was adamant that it was our mistake. This was particularly annoying given we had a friend with us and we are reasonable regular customers. Luckily we were able to get a table up the road at Priti Raj and to be fair the food there was better and cheaper [and I am not just saying that and they have a significantly better choice]. Obviously we will not be returning but given the Manager's attitude I sure he will not give a hoot

Been coming here for 10 years and never had a bad visit

Really wanted to love this place but sadly the curries did not live up to the hype. They were pretty bland and nothing special. The pickle tray and beer selection was good and the staff really friendly.

Booked a table week in advance for 7:15 , just to be told that I'm blocking their reservations "by the way I booked it"and they asked me to book the reservation for 7:30 . Very disappointing. We wanted to try your restaurant but your extremely rude behaviour is unacceptable.

Attended with a group of friends at the weekend and had the caramelised vegetarian dish (sorry I can't remember the actual name) . It was absolutely delicious 😋. The service was also spot on. I accidentally left my hat behind and the staff were really helpful in getting in back to me the following day. (great response to messages). My only negative comment relates to a group of around 20 "ladz" at the table next to us, who were so loud we could hardly converse at our own table. No fault of the restaurant, and can't really be avoided, except by attending at quieter times than Saturday night. Which is my plan for my next visit 🧡

Just had dinner in here, had a great meal. £91 for a meal for two (poppadoms/starter/main) + a bottle of wine, a sofa drink and a beer. My new fav Indian in Sheffield. Definitely will be coming again.

We hadn’t been for a year or so but my birtday meant my choice! And it was delightful! Starters to die for - esp the lamb chops - and all the mains were stunning. Staff are so hardworking and really pleasant around the place. Really cannot fault it!!!

Five stars for the food, absolutely delicious. However we ordered for a delivery through city grab, would not recommend, tracking appeared to show numerous stops and took an age to get here, needed reheating on arrival. So 1 star for city grab delivery 5 for food. Recommend to eat on & reserve a table.

Our first visit from recommendation. Our son lives just down the road from Ashoka and always wanted to go so we went. Booked table on line. Friendly staff. Great setting/decor. Very impressed with the food and a lot of it. the price was just right. We will be definitely be on our next visit and our son is probably going to go back more now it’s his local.

Our daughter has just moved to Sheffield so we aren’t familiar with the restaurants in the city, the Ashoka came up on a Time Out recommended list so we decided to give it a try and we weren’t disappointed. The menu is interesting and not your average run of the mill offerings. Food was delicious and portions were ample for us. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive, the restaurant isn’t that big so glad we made a reservation.

No pictures on this trip as I was rushing to get home. The food is great here. It's possibly the best curry house in Sheffield (controversial I know). Super tasty.

Ashoka had a wonderful colonial feel about it and it felt like we were eating in the 1950/60s. The menu also offered a very interesting variety of choices not seen in other Indian restaurants. My Keralan Coconut Curry was excellent and full of flavour and spice. My sons were also very impressed with their curry choices. Prices were very reasonable. Our server (possibly the owner) was quirky and made it quite clear he didn't want to know any football scores (he was watching it later on TV). As we were jubilant Palace fans we did our best to supress our joy! However for us it was double success - great result and great food!

We had a wonderful meal at Ashoka. Excellent, tasty, authentic food and very good prices. We had more than enough food to fill us up and for 4 people including a couple of drinks and an array of dishes it came to £117. I'll definitely be coming back and would highly recommend the restaurant. Make sure to get the prawn puri starter and the Karamelised kashmiri lamb curry, and get lots of mint sauce to go with it all. Drinks wise I'd recommend the mango lassi. At the end they also gave us these nice little towels which you pour hot water onto and then clean your hands.

Possibly the best curry I have ever eaten.... and we've eaten a lot! Beautiful, balanced, flavoursome authentic Indian cuisine served in a professional but friendly environment. The service was that little bit more special which only added to the experience. A massive recommendation, worth going well out of your way to enjoy!

Omg this place reminds me of old India... where u can find Dirty Cutlery Which we did and tasteless food which we did too.. never in my life had that bad food. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The food is outstanding but as someone that does not like to eat close to strangers in crowded space.. Restaurant about 12ft wide by 40ft long ways to noisy and when full you cant hear each other speak.. The staff are great had to wait a 50mins for meal The chef class of cooking wow wow wow

We were in Sheffield as a pit stop on the way back to London from Scotland. Did not have a reservation but they accommodated us so that was nice. Was not busy when we started but was getting busy as the evening progressed. Now to the food. It was probably the worst Indian food I have had in the entire trip to the UK. The poppadums smelled of used oil. The saag paneer was not minced and we could see only whole stems. The taste was terrible too. Muttar paneer was ok and so was the chole puri. Chapati was like rubber. The service was mixed, good at the beginning but kind of haughty when we ordered an extra poori. One caveat. We are Indian origin and from the US. Maybe the dishes were catering to the local palette.

Stellar! The food is out of this world. The spicing here strikes a balance between intriguing, surprising and understated that makes other contemporary Indian restaurants seem garish and amateur.

Picture the scene. A wet Wednesday night, two old friends catching up, a few pints down. Time for a curry. Boasting one of the more evolved and modern curry house menus I've seen, Ashoka certainly creates some anticipation as to what's about to grace the table. At the back of the restaurant is a black board with some restaurant rules - no smoking, no outside food, no swearing etc... Felt a little like school. First up poppadoms - off to a flier. Not greasy and crisp served with good version of the usual suspect accompaniments. We shared the chicken liver puri. Never seem chicken liver on an Indian menu before. To be fair the curry sauce in the puri softened the crisp shell which didn't work and the spices over powered the liver flavour. For the main event we had a vegetable curry with trademarked caramelized onions (still no sure if that's a real trademark or if it's tongue in cheek). Very nice. A solid chicken curry came with it. The spinach dahl lacked lentils but tasted good. Over ordered on the carbs (so easily done) and struggled to finish the rice, naan, and roti. But got there somehow. Beer selection was good and pricing of everything fair. The refilling of the water glasses on our table was either world class or boarder line disruptive - possibly both. I made the school boy error of asking if they did desserts. I was told, that despite a fellow diner asking the same thing just moments before that they categorically don't. Felt a bit strong as a response to a question from a diner attempting to give them, you know, more business. So I quipped back, 'perhaps if two customers have asked the same question in ten minutes there's demand and this should be considered'. Was reliably informed that no one else would ask for ten days after I had asked. Doesn't matter. We got extra chocolates with the bill (which was all laughed together at) and those towels you pour hot water on and they expand 5x bigger. Who doesn't like those? Overall a great dinner, world class water service and a genuinely innovative modern curry offering. Much to like. Just don't ask for a pudding. Maybe that should go on the black board?

I brought 10 colleagues to Ashoka for their first visit. Having been numerous times in the past. I might have hyped the place up a bit as I love it it there. As expected its didn't disappoint. Everyone had a fabulous evening and could not speak highly enough of the food we ordered and the service we received. A colleague from London thought it was the best curry he's had in the UK which is an impressive accolade from a foody. Rest assured we will be back with clients and colleagues in the very near future. Many thanks.

Our whole meal was spoiled by sitting in the window seat with the night sun in our eyes and very hot. We asked to move but we’re refused dispute other tables being empty on arrival and when we left. Really spoiled the whole meal and night as we were so uncomfortable. maybe get blinds for the windows would help Very disappointing night out

Had a veggie meal for 3. Ginger brinjal, sag aloo, tarka Dal and caramelised Kashmiri. Table booths are a bit tight for larger people. Bustling atmosphere with fast service. Roti's are recommended.

Atmosphere is great, staff very attentive and the food is awesome, the best curry I have eaten, ever. The ratings on Ashoka are fully justified, we shared a number of dishes between the 6 of us and every single one was amazing. If you ever in Sheffield, like Indian food and are looking for an exquisite dining experience make sure you call and book a table and savour the delights of this superb restaurant.
