Ashfields far exceeded our expectations. Friendly, welcoming servers and outstanding food. Every effort was made to ensure we had a positive dining experience and I would definitely recommend a visit. Excited to see what the 2024/25 programme of events has to offer.

We visited the restaurant during our trip to York and had a fantastic evening. We attended the gin tasting evening where we tried a selection of local gins from the Fairfax distillery alongside a fantastic menu. Food was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic, service was also impeccable. We will be back on our next trip! Amazing value and great to witness the future of the hospitality industry!

Thank you for a lovely meal, the food was all cooked and presented very well. Especially the duck, it was excellent. We had a really enjoyable experience. Only one constructive piece of feedback, you appeared to be short of waiting staff, we were kept waiting a while - but overall this is a minor point.

I, along with 21 friends and club colleagues, visited on Wednesday 1st February for an evening meal. The service was excellent, BUT, the food was exceptional. I have dined in many of this countries Michelin Star restaurants, and believe me ASHFIELDS is on a par with what they offer. I would say that in my experience ONLY "La Manoir Aux Quatre Saison" in Oxfordshire is slightly ahead in service.

Booked in for the Festive Menu and delighted to meet up again with Zac and his team . Table of 4 and as usual given a warm welcome and update since our last visit. The meal was well presented with a nice selection of starters and Mains including our seasonal favourites. York are very fortunate to have a college catering for the Leisure industry and the development of these young people and we recommend local residents of York should make themselves familiar with this training provider and support the York offering in any way they can.

We had a wonderful evening at Ashfield's restaurant for the October Taster Menu. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed, and all the waiting staff were attentive and polite. The food itself was a delicious selection of beautifully presented plates. The chefs had obviously worked hard to create the menu and the food was presented in spectacular style. The college should be really proud of these students who showed great dedication to their work and attention to the guests: they deserve congratulating! Looking forward to eating at Ashfields again this month.

Having heard the many good, complementary comments about Ashfields Restaurant and the excellence of the students involved with it, I visited it for the first time myself with a party to see if it was all true. The restaurant is situated within the college and is smallish but attractive with a nice ambience. Upon arrival, we were greeted at the door by smartly dressed, friendly students who took our coats and hung them up. Having got seated, we were politely asked if we would like a pre-dinner drink , an offer which we accepted. It had been decided previously that as part of the meal, we would have wine, and we were served efficiently with a choice of white or red. Just as we were about to be served the fire alarm went off (nothing to do with the restaurant) and we all had to evacuate the building. This could have been a stressful make or break situation for a lot of people but not in this case. Returning to the building, there was no panic and the students remained relaxed. The meal could have been a disaster and overcooked but again no it was just as if nothing had happened. The menu had three starters, three main courses and three desserts and catered for the vegetarian option. I had the Whitby crab cake as a starter followed by the Braised Beef Bourguignon and lastly the Warm Dark Chocolate brownie in chocolate sauce. I can only say that all 3 were excellent and delicious, just of the right size and well presented. Members of our party who had different menu choices made similar comments. At a cost of £5.50 for one course, £7.50 for two courses and £10.00 for three courses, it provides excellent value. A cup of tea or coffee costs an additional £1.00. I would have liked to have been offered a coffee refill but I'm only nitpicking. The students must be congratulated for their professionalism and the odd indiscretion is only to be expected seeing a lot of them would have only started their courses in September. If they continue on as they started, I'm sure they will all be successful in the catering industry. You can take a chance and just walk in but I would advise that you pre-book to ensure you get a table. Overall, excellent and the positive comments I had heard were proven. Will I go back? Of course and I'll be taking other friends with me this time.

There are hundreds of restaurants in and around York, nearly all are either deeply forgettable franchises or regrettable exercises in culinary flights of fancy ( "double wagyu beef parties enhanced with samphire, rocket and rhubarb marshmallow and caressed with a reduction of cherry tomatoes, cumin and birch sap" in other words, hamburger for the foolish.) Forget them all and visit Ashfield's where Mark and a team of young trainees, who are without exception willing, pleasant and professional will offer you the sort of prompt and unobtrusive service that should be the norm, that once was the norm, and is now very much the exception. Service of what? You ask. Service of some very fine food indeed! Scallops served with Whitby Crab croquettes, rabbit, Ox Cheek, a truly beautiful wing of skate, worth the bones according to my brother in law! some terrific terrine of ham hock and a Maigret of duck cooked exactly as it should be ( all made right there behind the swing doors, no evidence what so ever of Mr Bookers pre-prepared "delights") The sweets are likewise all "in house" and they are all very fine indeed! The Carte du Vin is modest but entirely adequate and they mix a formidable rhubarb gin to set you off to a racing start! Round it all off with a wonderful selection of English cheeses, be astonished at the final tally ( you could spend more on the coffee and cover charge alone at the Raby Hunt) and reflect upon the fact that it is still possible, albeit with a little luck and perseverance, to find some really delightful surprises in the bland and soulless culinary landscape today. More power to their cheerful and very capable young elbows! I am endeavouring to have a "coming out" party next March, perhaps I can persuade them to lay on Brown Windsor soup, British beef suet pud and spotted Dick? Oh yes! "Fish and Chip Fridays"! Just drop in at lunchtime and enjoy, with bread and butter, tea and even, of course, mushy peas for a fiver!! FIVE STARS, VISIT!!

I finished with Blueberry cheesecake with a rhubarb sorbet and that was sublime. The service was excellent, we could not have asked for more. The total 2 the 2 of us eating two courses was just £13.90. Nice to be back in the restaurant proper! Great meal, the young Chefs produced a well balanced menu with wonderful food [rather too much food, in fact]. The fish course was best of night closely followed by the Pork main course. Having said that all the courses had strong points. The young Chef who explained each course was exceptional and should go far, not only is she a good communicator but can answer questions about how the food is cooked. It was nice to meet all the Chefs [both black and white hats] at the end of the meal. They all did a great job. Service was very, very good with staff ensuring that everything was OK throughout the meal. After the Principals faux-pas last time this meal recovered Ashfields reputation.

We visited the the restaurant for the European theme night and what a joy it was. This was our first visit and had been organised by a group of level one students. From entering the restaurant the waiting staff could not have been more polite or attentive. I chose beef bourguignon with truffle mash which was served piping hot and was packed with flavour. This was followed by the sticky toffee pudding with cinder toffee ice cream. The ice cream was pure heaven and teamed with the light sticky toffee were a match made in heaven. My only complaint was their was only 1 scoop of ice cream. This restaurant is a hidden gem and others in York could learn a thing or two from these students.

This was a European themed night for students studying level 1 professional cookery, at the college. Three courses from a French, Spanish or England based menu. Chose the Spanish starter of tapas. Wonderfully presented and very enjoyable. Well done Sam. Loved your starter. Had the French main of beef bourguignon, this was a taste sensation. I would expect this kind of dish and flavours in a top end restaurant. Well done to Zach who cooked this amazing dish. Finished with my fav desert of sticky toffee pudding with cinder toffee ice cream. A good effort, perhaps a little more ice cream please. A fantastic effort by all the young chefs. The other meals going out to other tables all looked great too. Could have happily tried more dishes. Thank you and good luck to you all.

We went for the £27 per head fish tasting menu this evening. The food was generally good but very small portions, when we have had tasting menus previously portions are small but worked out so that by the end of the meal you are satisfied, unfortunately the same can't be said this evening we both came home hungry and neither of us have large appetites.I suspect that some of the men at other tables may have been stopping off for a takeaway on the way home. The staff did well to try and serve everyone the courses together but at no time during or after the meal were we personally asked for any feed back, I suspect this was due to the fact that when we arrived we found ourselves not in the Ashfield restaurant as booked but eating in the college foyer. The principal was entertaining a single table of guests in the restaurant and paying customers were left literally out in the cold. Several guests were wearing their coats throughout the meal as every time the doors of the college opened the temperature plummeted. The lighting and ambience didn't lend itself to a relaxing evening but one of general disappointment. On several occasions during the evening a crowd of people gathered outside the entrance to the Ayckbourn theatre and it seemed like we were being observed at feeding time in the zoo. To the Principle my feed back is "shame on you" as head of this facility you have let down your students and hard working staff through lack of thought and planning I can't believe there wasn't another room you couldn't have used for your select gathering this experience will defiantly influence our chance of returning or recommending Ashfields

Unfortunately, we were very underwhelmed by the food served to us last night. We felt that the price of £30 per head excluding wine was very expensive given that this was an event in student training, albeit overseen by a professional chef. The food presentation was good, but more attention should have been given to the combination and lack of ingredients on every course bar the soup. The first course consisted of popcorn soaked in lamb fat, it wa not at all platable. However, the staff were friendly, enthusiastic and attentive, and it is rewarding to attend an event that promotes and encourages students.

I went to Ashfields restaurant at York college again last week for an excellent vegetarian taster evening, the food as always was inspiring, tasty, well presented and all round an exciting plateful every time. This place is amazing, all the food and service is done by trainees under the tuition of qualified chefs. The was our first visit without the brilliant Rhianne at the helm, she has moved on to a tutoring role in the college, but the new lady was just as welcoming and helpful.Looking forward to the next evening, wish there were more of them, hmm but then maybe not, I'm not sure my waistline could take it.Dithered about whether to put this review on as its not a large restaurant, and I don't want it to get over booked so that I can't get in, but at £23 for a 6 course taster evening it's amazing value and stunning inspirational dishes.

Visited Ashfields with work colleagues. It's a little out of the centre of York and being inside a college lacks a bit of atmosphere, but there are plenty of upsides. Service was friendly and efficient, the menu choices varied and the price of £15 for three courses ridiculously good value. Presentation of some of the dishes was sophisticated, for others it seemed like a contest to pile as much on the plate as possible. One or two of the dishes had the odd error, but overall it was a very good experience. We will return.

My wife and I had travelled from Wakefield to York by 'bus (for the enjoyment of doing so) and alighted at York College 'bus stop, just near the Askham Bar Park and Ride base. I had previously searched Trip Advisor for restaurants in York and, after seeing excellent reviews of Ashfields Restaurant, booked for lunch at 12.30. Ashfields seemed to be central to the York College complex and is fully serviced by catering students. The menu had three courses, each with three selections. Two courses cost £6.95 (starter and main or main and dessert) and a dessert an extra £2.95. A single course (presumably a main) was priced at £4.50. Tea or coffee (very good) was £1 and wine by the bottle or the glass was very reasonably priced. There was a good selection of wines, all available by glass. The students were polite and attentive and our waitress was excellent, very happy to explain the menu as well as chat generally. And, finally getting to the point, the food was superb. I can't remember the name given to my starter but it was a blue cheese mousse, with very good 'trimmings', with as many home-baked rolls and butter as you wanted. I had a very lovely chicken dish as main and a delicious lemon posset with elderflower sorbet, etc., for dessert. All the dishes were beautifully presented in a 'modern' style. The meal was excellent value for money: I had no reluctance in paying the bill! They also serve evening meals and, I was told, host banquets. Very well done to the student chefs, waiters/esses and other 'staff'.

The burns night menu was excellent. The atrium gave the meal atmosphere and the service was efficient and friendly. Particularly enjoyed the haggis hotpot, ox cheek was tasty and very tender then two puddings, what better way to end a meal.

Had Christmas lunch special today with 2 friends - never been before and wasn't sure what I was going to get. Surprised and delighted by the meal along with the dedication and warm welcome of the students and staff alike. The students were from York St Johns for the deaf - exceptionally polite and helpful - WELL DONE EVERYONE! The meal was 3 course with traditional Christmas lunch as an option .... presentation was excellent and good choice of menu. Our day was £20 which included 3 course lunch, glass of mulled wine, tea/coffee and mince pies - all freshly prepared and made on the premises - very good. (The offer was also part of a pamper deal so we also got our nails done - GOOD WORK YORK COLLEGE AND STUDENTS - will be there again nest year!On our way out, picked up leaflets for themed nights at the restaurant and Vintage afternoon tea - great deals and offers.

An excellent three course meal for an amazing price, it is a shame that the restaurant is not more widely known about in York. The staff and students should be proud of what they are achieving and we shall definitely be back when next we are visiting the area.

I went with 3 of my colleagues for the Chocolate themed evening....The word must be out on the street - 70 people had booked in.I cannot recommend this highly enough - the whole 6 chocolate themed courses were amazing. The scallops with white chocolate - Oh my God (1)Venison with dark chocolate - Oh my God (2)I could go on but the above two items are something I usually pick off a menu when eating around the world. We have of course already booked the Christmas meal - to ensure we get in.The students serving are now moving into another level and clearly they are loving their college courses.

Three pots of tea, two plates of sandwiches, creamy, jammy scones and the daintiest little cakes you've ever seen.....and then they come around with the dessert trolley! This was a real treat; a traditional vintage afternoon tea with the best china and friendly, efficient service. We couldn't believe it cost just five pounds per head! A much better deal than many of Yorks other famous tea rooms.....

Yet again a fabulous night of exciting food. 6 courses of exceptional food with outstanding service from the students. The highlight of the evening was the first dessert - a mouthwatering selection of summer and Pimms fruit served on a warm creamy sabignon - delicious. The pork belly was delicious and the crackling - crackling! All our party thoroughly enjoyed the food and we will be returning in the Autumn.

This was my third visit to Ashfields, and each time gets better and better. The head chef is clearly passionate about food, and marries tastes and textures often with a surprising twist. Tonight’s £18 tasting menu consisted of 6 courses, each based on summer flavours. All were beautifully presented and tasted absolutely fantastic (including the 2 desserts) but the highlight for me was the confit belly pork - a crispy crackling on top of meltingly tender meat. Delicious! The wines at Ashfields are also brilliant value at around £13 per bottle (including a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which is often twice that price in other restaurants). The meal was served by 2nd and 3rd year catering students who were obviously well trained in their chosen career, being attentive but not intrusive. A special mention must go to Emma, who recommended wines to accompany each course and got it right each time!To me, Ashfields is fast becoming a hidden treasure – amazing food worthy of top Michelin-starred eateries at a snippet of their prices.Roll on Autumn……….

I went to this restaurant on a recommendation from a friend and I was not disappointed. we went for the table d'hote menu, 'nose to tail' which cost £18.00. The food was exceptional and a credit to the chef and his team of trainees. The service was attentive and un-rushed. I was there for a business meeting and we both felt looked after without fuss or intrusion. I don't think you will find better value food in York!

The six course taster "Celebration of cheese" menu designed by the students was a wonderful range of flavours. This could easily get through to late rounds at MasterchefOlive, tomato, goats cheese. beetroot sounds and looks interesting - even more so when experienced - four tastes of beetroot - sorbet, puree (flavour superb), crisp (deep fried slice) and sliced /pickled. Sundried tomato hidden within the goats cheese ball.Breast of chicken - sliced and rolled round the gruyere and pepper as photoThe cooking goes from strength to strength

Our party of 6 had an eating experience not to be forgotten in Ashfields last night. The meal was advertised as 'A Taste of the Wild' and every course represented the true meaning of the theme.First course was Nettle and Yorkshire Blue - a vivid, hot, green soup with a foam top. Second course was razor clam, ham and pineapple weed - a delightful, light taste of the sea. Thirdly, snails, wild garlic, morels - although a bit sceptical as I had never tasted snails - this course went down a treat, the mushroom and the delicate creamy garlic sauce and wild garlic flowers added to the enjoyment.Fourth course - wood pigeon, dandelion, chick pea and wild herbs - pigeon accompanied by deep fried dandelion and garnished with daisies, wild herbs and chick peas was interesting and enjoyable. Now onto desserts. Dessert 1 - Strawberries and Rose - a truly enjoyable fruit and flower experience. Lastly - Sea Buckthorn and Douglas Fir - a delicious lemon tart with sea buckthorn accompanied by ice cream infused with pine. All 6 course were excellently presented and served by the very capable and friendly students from the College.A new variety of beer and wine was available on the night as previously the choice was limited.Another night to remember which opened our eyes to eating natural wild food. Excellent value at £18.00 a head. Will be returning very soon!

Me, my partner, mother and mothers partner visited Ashfields today for lunch after I found out about the place on the internet yesterday, all I can say is WOW! I rang up yesterday to book & the lady who answered the phone was extremely helpful giving me directions and prices, when we arrived we were greeted by the manager who showed us to our table. Now onto the food, me, my partner and mother had eggs benidicts to start with which was excellent, then for mains we had the lamb, salad & ploughman's lunch, again all excellent, all this was followed by eton mess and rhubarb. 2 courses was less than £7 and 3 courses less than £10. Will definitely be going back. P.S. Big shout out to our waiter Luke was very helpful.

Enjoyed yet another fabulous theme night at Ashfields restaurant. This time specialising in seafood. Starter was an unusual and unexpected delight - a mussel soup followed by a delightful crab cake. This was then followed by a succulent scallop accompanied by home made black pudding. Main course - melt in the mouth salmon - which appears to be a speciality as I have eaten similar there previously on Burns Night (another fab evening). The students were pleasant and attentive, some obviously working at higher levels than others. It is easy to forget you are in a college environment rather than a top class restaurant. A wonderful evening..looking forward to the next one!

Have just returned from visiting Ashfields again - this time for a vintage tea party. The restaurant had really gone to town on the theme, from the gorgeous vintage crockery to the selection of teapots (mine had a really cute lilac and green tea cosy!).The food was fantastic from the delicious finger sandwiches to the mini squares of Victoria sponge, delicate slices of gingerbread, light and crispy cream-filled shortbread biscuits and the tiny scones, complete with dinky little Kilner jars full of jam and cream. All topped off with limitless (proper leaf) tea or filter coffee. The quality and service was truly comparable to some of the famous North Yorkshire tea houses. And an absolute bargain at £5 per head. Can't wait for my next visit...........

Been to a number of their theme nights in the past few months. On each and every occasion the quality of the food in terms of presentation and taste is amongst the best I've experienced and frequently competes with the few Michelin star places visited. There is a new found vibrancy for the whole operation compared to a couple of years agoStuart the head chef and inspiration for the catering students has a real passion for food and most importantly creativity - as per Rich P who noted the smoked salmon on Burns night. His enthusiasm and catering is going from strength to strength and a real role model for his proteges. He could be a potential Masterchef finalistService - depends on the particular students on the night. All are pleasant and friendly - there are some who already have just what it takes to be an effective maitre d' whilst other could benefit from some confidence training and greater knowledge of the food and wine if they are to succeed in the job market.26 March 2014 was a 5 course tasting menu - Fruits of the sea - £20 exc drinks (wine approx £13 per bottle and good quality as experienced at their wine tasting for the new list a few weeks previously) The intensity of the sea buckthorn set off the vanilla tart with meringue perfectly.Look forward to the several evenings for the rest of this academic year

I came to one of the special themed events in November and was really blown away - wood pigeon, venison and pheasant, complemented by sauces which really enhanced the flavours. The ambience is perfect for easy conversation and all our guests had personal attention from the staff. I would recommend Ashfields, and especially their themed taster evenings, to everyone.

I went to a wine-tasting evening here with some friends. Ashfields is a training restaurant for budding chefs so I wasn't expecting 5* food. My mistake! It was amazing, from the French Onion soup to the Coquille St Jacques, and the Beef Bourgignon (which was de-constructed - a meltingly tender piece of meat with tiny onions and freshly picked mixed mushrooms in a fantastic sauce) to the lemon tart with fresh strawberries. Apparently the head chef here used to work at a top Yorkshire restaurant and this was in evidence from the food itself and the way it was presented.Ashfields have regular different themed nights every few weeks as well as 'normal' dinner menus each week. This was my first visit here but it definitely won't be my last.

Went to Ashfields for burns night the food was outstanding better than anything I've had in the past you could tell a lot of thought had gone into it. The smoked salmon was a personal highlight served in a Kilner jar with heather and lovely smoky aroma I just wanted to crawl inside the jar. I took my girlfriend who is a little choosy when it comes to food, the head chef accommodated for her and made alternatives to suit her. Who could ask for more lovely service and a lovely night. Thank you

We stayed for bed and breakfast here. The house is in a beautiful peaceful setting overlooking meadows. Hosts very friendly. Comfortable bedroom. The TV reception is scrambled and there is no phone signal - so I would recommend enabling WiFi calling on your phone and bring a book 😃

Oh no!! No full English breakfast any more. I don't know the reason why you have stopped serving this but I think it's a big mistake. Shame really as we have always enjoyed our breakfasts here and now have to find somewhere else to go

We chose the Middleton arms after seeing pictures of the gammon steak on Facebook, unfortunately this was sold out on the evening we went along with a few other dishes on the menu. I ordered the potato skins starter which came as a large portion which I enjoyed followed by Whitby scampi, this was average with frozen scampi. My wife had garlic mushrooms for starter which was okay, for main she had steak pie which she said was very nice.

Having been to the Stapleton Arms at Wass on many occasions and even been shown the bedrooms, 4 of us booked B&B and evening meals. I booked online 2 rooms. The 'Superior' room £150 per night and the other £100. However, we were not aware the venue had changed hands but it almost immediately became apparent. The stairs leading to the bedrooms looked very tierd and unhoovered. The landing and our bedroom stank of burnt fat and the rooms were very basic and on opening the wardrobe I found empty drink bottles. The door to the shower had black rising up it and the shower just ran like a tap.. Our meal was fine and our friends ordered a bottle of champagne which cost £70 which we were happy to pay but when the bill for the meal arrived it was altogether £340. They had even charged extra for a blob of icecream on my pudding as they said icecream was an extra. Next morning we met at breakfast only to discover that our friend staying in the 'Superior' room, one of whom is very seriously ill and this was supposed to be a treat during a break from treatment, found the shower was not working and they couldn't find a shaving ;point. Just to add insult to injury one of our party ordered a poached egg and when it arrived the toast was burnt black on the underside and my bacon was floating in fat. Had it not been for the fact that one of our party was very ill and we didn't want to make a fuss we paid up the bill and left. Not once did the manager ask us if everything was o.k. He was totally uninterested. What a nightmare stay. Never again, The next morning I phoned to speak to the owner but she was not at work but would ring me on the Thursday of that week. She never rang. I rang back a week later and was told the owner had been given my complaint and she would ring me but another weerk later I have received no response. I suppose she is £600 better off and we will never grace their doors again.
