Had a choice of eating in the bar or restaurant and chose the more informal bar area. Good choice on the menu, and I opted for the fish which was lovely, followed by sticky toffee pudding. Shame the only real ale available was in bottles, otherwise excellent.

We had a fantastic evening in the restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble for Julie to make sure we had what we needed and we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. The food was spot on(perfectly cooked sirloin steak) and a dessert to die for of warm bread and butter pudding with banoffee sorbet and chocolate garnish. Amelia was also serving us and was a delight and friendly. We’ve been several times to the Arundell, but this was the best ever. Ps try their own cider, it’s very appley.

Food was great, service was good….BUT!! It was totally impersonal, ZERO ambiance and we came away feeling very disappointed. What was all that about for nearly £100, for drinks and dinner for two?? Plus my Bread and Butter pudding was dry and stale! However, my wife’s Sticky Toffee Pud was great! Not a place I would go back to or recommend to my friends.

This is one of our favourite places, both in bar and Sunday lunch in restaurant. We’ve eaten here several times in past year and always been pleased. Although the menu doesn’t change very often the food is normally very good, so we were disappointed this week when it didn’t live up to its usual standard. Disappointing, tasteless soup which had skin on top - we had eaten the same soup previously and it had been delicious. Followed by 2 tasteless dishes, fish risotto and venison sausages. The burgers were better. Maybe there was a different chef but whatever, it didn’t make for a great eating out experience.

We were in the area and turned up for lunch without a booking. They found us a table in the bar, away from the rest of the guests given we were there with 2 small kids. 3 course lunch menu was £21.50. It was just delicious and beautifully presented. Kids meals were £8.95 but huge; 1 pasta was more than enough for our 2 (aged 4 & 6). The staff were very attentive and friendly to us and the kids. A very nice find. Too many hotels these days have owners who want to keep completely out of sight and in the background. Hiding away from their customers. Not so here. Simon and his team continue to provide a very well led business and deserve every compliment going. The hotel is a bit of a British institution and is well worth visiting. I think Simon and his wife have only been at the helm for a couple of years and it must have been an incredibly tough period for them with Covid etc. but if they continue to keep the customer at the centre of what they do then continued success will follow for sure. Thanks for a fabulous couple of days stay and for taking the time to chat to your guests (not just me!). A great experience and you should be applauded. Best wishes.

The new owners have put tremendous effort into bringing this iconic fishing and shooting hotel back up to par. we had lunch there yesterday in the bar. The Covid restrictions were being closely adhered to which is reassuring. Fire burning bright. Excellent food, attentive staff, they have retained the services of Steve Pidgeon as chef. This is great news and the quality of our meal was exceptional. I had the beef, rare sirloin and brisket, rich and unctuous. The sea bass was soft and cooked to perfection with a very flavoursome sauce and the tempura anchovies had a real wow factor. The menu included other tantalising dishes too. Things are really looking up for the future and it is accessible now whilst we are in Teir 2.

My family and I went for a gorgeous lunch at the Arundell arms just yesterday. We were afraid that the hotel would now be too different or spoilt by the new owners. But it was the absolute opposite. They were all so kind, and the food was mouth watering. Real care and consideration had gone into making our trip special, for example the beautifully selected cheese board and wine list. The hotel itself was looking amazing, beautiful new furniture but with the same Arundell ambiance. Went for lunch on New Year day, in the bar area as we have 3 dogs between us. Really good. It is such a welcoming place with excellent food. You can sit in the lounge after lunch and no one will hustle you away. The new wood burner is good too giving out a lot of heat! After what must have been a very busy night for the staff with the New Year celebrations they were still most attentive. I have an added feel for the Arundell, my late husband was evacuated from Plymouth in the 1940's and went to the school, now where the hampers/ shop is,also went on the one day fishing course which was most enjoyable so it's not just food to be enjoyed.

Extremely dog friendly hotel with accommodation and restaurant facilities for pet owners. Visited with my dog for an evening meal but was rather disappointed; although good the food was not exceptional and was rather expensive. Charging £8 for a large glass of Pinot Grigio was excessive considering that this is a cheap wine. Also visited the hotel pub, popular with the locals and where prices are much cheaper. This hotel has a very high reputation for its food so perhaps I was unfortunate on this occasion, I plan to return to sample the tasting menu which is the subject of excellent reviews.

We were very impressed by this hotel restaurant. Breakfasts are very ample and delicious; we dined on three nights, and the Tasting Menu (with wine flights) on our third night was remarkable. In our case an exquisite gazpacho-like soup with nutmeg cream, a fillet of grey mullet, and then, after the raspberry sorbet palate-cleanser, the best roasted fillet of duck we have every tasted. The pairing of dishes with wines was thoughtful and truly creative. The white Quinta do Casal Monteiro was a superb accompaniment to the mullet.

As someone on a low carb diet, I can find it difficult whilst eating away from home. We ate in the bar twice. My first dinner was five different grilled fish served with extra salad. Each of the fish were cooked perfectly. My daughter had a roast beef salad with generous amounts of thickly sliced medium rare beef. The 2nd time my daughter must have loved hers so much, she had it a second time, whilst I went with a sirloin steak and salad. Looking at plates arriving at other tables, I could easily have gone off piste and enjoyed any of the carb rich options. A nice relaxed atmosphere with a dog or two sleeping under their owners tables. No dogs in the main restaurant, just the bar. Parking was difficult the first night as there was a gathering of Porsche owners staying in the hotel, There are quite a few charging points for electric cars.

Eight of us on a walking trip to Devon, booked a table for supper in the restaurant, and were very pleasantly surprised to find we had an exclusive room in which to dine. The restaurant was very nice - traditional, but that was what we were expecting. Service and food were good, and everyone enjoyed the evening as we had very pleasant waitresses and waiter. Prices were on the upper side compared with some local pubs we'd visited, but so was the quality and presentation, so we felt it was worth the extra cost. This is a very traditional hotel, and the areas we visited were warm and inviting, which included reception, the bar, the restaurant and the lounge. Toilets were also very clean. We can't comment on the bedrooms as we weren't staying.

We were recommended this restaurant by our neighbour and said we should try it,so we decide to eat there on Monday night in the bar as the restaurant only served a set tasting menu with no choice. My wife had the scallops with chorizo which she said was okay but lacked seasoning and I had the risotto what was bland and boring for main course we both had fish with both dishes being bland as well and limp chips ,we did mention this to the waiting staff and only had a sorry back and that was it ,our first time and last .

First time visit to the Arundell Arms. Food was amazing they presented a selection of bread that was home made and very moreish I had the scallops - the biggest I’ve ever seen. My partner had the soup with was full of flavour. We both had steak as our main. No room for pub though ☹️ Service was very attentive by all and Stephen the restaurant manager took time out to come over and have a chat, even though every table was taken and was the bar was very busy with a great atmosphere.

This is my local and nearest restaurant that has until recently been up on a pedistal. It is however living on borrowed time unless it addresses some serious issues with the catering and service. I booked the restaurant menu but requested it be served in the bar area, however this had not been communicated to the team by the front desk / reception. We were given bar menus and when my wife and I querried this we were told that the restaurant only serves a tasting menu and if we wanted anything else we would have to chose from the bar menu. Really? This is not a recipe for success.

My partner and I spent one night at the Arundell Arms over the weekend. We'd decided to treat ourselves to lunch on arrival as we were out in the evening and wouldn't be able to make dinner. Having stayed at the Arundell a few years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it, and after reading all the good reviews on here, we were really looking forward to it! Lunch was served in the bar area. I ordered the risotto and my partner ordered the fish mixed grill. My plate of risotto looked more like a plate of porridge, and had absolutely no flavour whatsoever. It really was inedible and I had to send it back. Instead, I played it safe and ordered a bowl of leek and potato soup. The soup was really thin and unappealing. My partner's fish mixed grill was just average. Really disappointing, after having such high hopes!

This is a lovely Restaurant serving fine food. The Taster and Bar menus are both delicious. Dogs are very welcome at the tables in the bar. On fine days you can also chose to dine in the lovely garden.

The hotel prides itself on the food provided. Ate here twice during our stay and had the 5 course taster menu on the first night which was superb. Matching wines available. Classical style food which was flavourful and beautifully presented. The menu changes daily so difficult to make a recommendation although the duck and the pannacotta courses were amazing.

Such a great choice whilst staying here for two nights. Cereals, fresh fruit salad, yogurt, nuts, seeds, patiseries, toast, full cooked English, fish, eggs (cooked many ways) to name a few. All this with great friendly service nothing was too much trouble.

Had a two night break here as a gift from family but it was on a room only basis. Breakfast was then an extra £15pp per day. The hotel has a large car park with several electric car charging points. We checked in quickly and were allocated room 5 at the top of the stairs. A lovely big room and traditionally appointed. Excellent shower, pins you to the floor! It is an old building so the floors are not all level and our bed was on a tilt. The staff were most obliging when I mentioned this after our first night and when we refused their offer to change rooms for the second night they corrected the mattress by placing pillows under it to level it off which worked. Breakfast was served in the elegant dining room with a good choice for either continental or full. We took the full breakfast the first day with my husband having the full English while I had eggs Benedict, and they were well presented and tasty. A good choice of hot options were available so I had pancakes the second morning which were also very enjoyable. We had a snack in the bar one evening, just a starter each as we had eaten out earlier in the day. The bar area was busy with diners and the two girls serving on the bar and waiting tables were very pleasant and helpful. Our food was again well presented and tasty. Not the cheapest food we have ever had but it was good. A lovely break and we would return.

I had been told by my hairdresser who works for them in the evenings about how the place had improved now so I thought I would try it and booked a table for lunch for 1.00pm for my wife's birthday. Ordered some drinks whilst waiting for food, but am not impressed with bar managers who spend their whole time moaning about how busy they are, no staff to help him etc etc. Perhaps if he had paid more attention to the drinks he was preparing I would not have had flat lemonade in my shandy. (They have no pump, it comes out of a plastic bottle).

Working on the footway outside, could not resist the fish and chips, so first to order once TJ's & LJ's opened for lunch. Crispy batter, very nice cod, and sumptuous chips, completed with salt and vinegar!!
