We dropped in here for lunch while out walking with friends. It was Wednesday lunch time and there were only four people in the pub drinking. On first impressions you could be forgiven for wondering “what have I walked into”. We ordered our drinks selecting two ales from the kegs and soft drinks for our wives. The lady behind the bar was very welcoming and brought menus and the specials board to our table. “Wow”, what a choice we had, which worried me a little as I was thinking with no customers and such a choice what’s the food going to be like and how long will we have to wait. I need not have worried. We all selected a different dish and by the time we were enjoying our second pint of Green Jack the food arrived. It was excellent, the pie came with a gravy boat, we all have ample veg which was beautifully cooked. A real pleasant surprise. The surrounding are not that great, you don’t need your best bib and tucker on, but the food and beer is excellent. We will definitely return and plan to give the Sunday Lunch a try.

From the moment you walk in, there is an absence of atmosphere and certainly no warm welcome. There is no good evening or how do you do, just a grunt from the tattoos behind the bar ‘what can I get you’. This is a far cry from how the pub was previously run and it appears there has been little or no investment. Furthermore, they now run it like a bingo parlour so the potential for a quiet drink or nice meal has completely diminished with the microphone / speakers too loud to talk over. We won’t be back any time soon. Very unclassy.

5 out of 5 for the overall experience. I've eaten at the Artichoke on different occasions and have enjoyed welcoming, friendly service. The staff were happy to alter the order when asked. The menu was varied and interesting. I received my meal in good time and correct temperature. Very tasty and will definitely visit again.

On a very sunny tea time we visited this village pub, hoping for a meal and drink outdoors. Large garden, loads of tables. Unfortunately, we found a very sad space. The beer garden is so unloved, unkempt and messy. Rather like sitting in a small junk yard. Full of weeds, broken umbrellas, disused gazebos and a rusty barbecue. It could be an amazing space with some care and attention. The lack of attention, care and general grubbiness for the outside meant we decided not to eat. So missing its full potential. Awful for customers and for the village.

What attracted me to this place was the feature on their menu named "Build a Burger" and that is exactly what you do. Select your choice of bun, select your burger - beef, fish, chicken, veggie etc, then your choice of dressing - i ordered two. then your salad and then your topping which included baked been! And they served it just like that, it was a tower of delight with a massive portion of excellent crispy chips. Next time i go i intend to challenge them with no burger but two sausages from the sausage and mash that my wife had, plus the baked beans topping. cant wait.

We came here on the off chance as we were staying at a local camp site and they fitted us in no problem. We were very impressed with food, large portions of hearty pub food, we all had pies or chilli which were very tasty. Would recommend this if you want great sized portions of good food for your money.

First visit to this pub under current ownership. 40 minutes after ordering food, informed by staff they were "really busy" & our food was "imminent" even though we were only customers eating in pub, with 8-10 eating & drinking outside. 10 minutes later it arrived, large portions, pretty good quality. Good value only because of government's Eat out to Help Out scheme. Worth a visit if you've got plenty of time to kill, forget it if you want your food in a hurry.

Waiting for the doors to open at a gig about 100 yards away. I was hoping for a quiet pint and when I walked in the bar , 3 people sat at the bar turned around & just stared at me. When I commented on the welcoming 1 boy got up and walked around the bar to inform me that he wasn't gonna serve me. So I left & walked another 100 yards to find a much friendlier pub where I had my quiet pint before I had a wicked night at the gig

I phoned a week before going to book a table after looking at the menus online including the Xmas menu , I asked when booking if all the menus were available and the gentleman I spoke to said yes they were all available. We Arrived at the the pub the bar was very busy so we wondered down to the resturant area where they were laying up tables so we were told we could sit anywhere ( no table laid up for us ). Stood at the bar and felt totally ignored by the bar staff who were busy chatting then a gentleman came over and served us, we then sat down and were given menus which tbh were nothing like the menus online. We then ordered our food which came out really quickly I had lasagne which was dry and reheated and was so dry I could not eat the ends. I did mention it and I got an apology and a generous £2 taken off. I could not believe that’s what they were going to do i personally would not have charged anything. Plates were then cleared and the waitress who i have to say was the most miserable young lady and should certainly in our opinion not be working in this industry no smile no interaction at all and when she brought our ooffee over she virtually threw it at my friend really rude .we will not be returning

We went to this pub to celebrate a friends 77th birthday party.Having been up since 4.30 am and it was now 7.30 pm i was quite tired. I ordered the 16oz rump steak cooked rare costing £16.95 When it arrived it was medium in places and well done to plain dried out in other places. Not being one to complain i eat half of it whilst trying to work out the strange taste. I offered my wife a piece to be told that it was stale. I smelt it and indeed it was stale. I complained to the waitress who said that she would challenge the kitchen staff on the matter. When the time came to pay the bill i was told that they had taken £4 off my £93.10 bill. I complained again to the waitress and was told not to raise my voice, my reason for raising my voice was to make myself heard above the quiz night loudspeaker blasting out the latest question. My wife was not informed that they would be having a quiz night when she reserved the table by telephone otherwise we would have dined elsewhere. The manager was called and we had a lengthy debate into why i had eaten half of the steak as opposed to apologising for the poor quality of food and the chefs inability to cook it to the customers request. His wife tried to intervene but was told very rudely to go away as he was dealing with the matter- a shame because i am sure that she would have had a better understanding of customer relations. The manager refused to budge on the matter preferring instead to argue with me. I informed him that i would be posting a review on social media only to be told that it was my prerogative. When i got home i looked at the bill to discover they had taken my order as sirloin steak not rump steak.I will not be returning to this pub as a customer and i would advise anyone who wishes to dine in this area to try the Kings Head Hotel 6 miles away in Beccles. Its a JD Wetherspoon house where they value customers and they know how to store and cook food correctly. The Buck Inn at Flixton managed by Phil serves excellent food too. Two nights later my wife told me that they had given her a glass of sauvignon blanc as opposed to Pinot Grigio.

Just had Sunday lunch here with a group of 14 walking friends. Excellent value - large portions with a variety of well-cooked fresh vegetables and lovely Yorkshires. (8.95 for my roast chicken). Option for a moderate portion as well. Everyone enjoyed their food choices - traditional, well cooked food, which is what we wanted (not gourmet). Service was efficient, attentive and friendly. We had a lovely meal 3 years ago here and decided to return whilst on holiday this year. The staff were lovely but i'm afraid the food is not as good as it was. The mediterranean lasagne was tasteless, no seasoning at all. The asparagus with salmon was so hard it was inedible. The deserts tasted like they had been microwaved - red hot on the outside and cold in the middle. The custard tasted like the tinned version. Overall we were very disappointed. However, the staff were lovely.

On holiday in Suffolk we called in at this traditional village pub with our 2 lurchers for an early evening meal and were made very welcome. The family on the adjoining table turned out to be the owners, who had moved from the Home Counties to Bungay about a year ago and are putting a lot of effort into running the Artichoke. Visited this for a Sunday lunch break with others. A real village pub with locals around bar stocking a variety of beers. Restaurant to the side well set out and access to the garden which we chose to sit in as quiet and pleasantly shaded under trees.Staff attentive and took orders at table. Straightforward menu and chose roast beef which was tender, nicely pink and with assorted vegetables - only thing not first class were the roast potatoes which were too crisp and over done. Very adequate portions meant we could not reach to desserts which looked good.A nice venue just off main road - good car park: good toilets. Has character and good bar scene.

Our previous two meals at this restaurant have been good but last night the fried plaice was awful. The flour batter on the top was very dark brown and tasted burnt. On turning the fish over the underside was black.I scraped the coating off and pointed out the black "gunk" to the waitress saying it was awful and should not be served to other customers in this state. The chips were undercooked hard and greasy. The waitress told us she would tell the chef but there was no apology from anyone. We did not take the complaint further as we were eating with friends and did not want to spoil the night out. It is very disappointing that a restaurant we recommended to others should serve such unacceptable food on this particular occasion.

I live just down the road, and I have been told many horror stories since my visit about the state of the food cooked by the head chef at this pub. I ate there just over a year and a half ago, and I not only did not find my meal very good, but I didn't find that the amount offered was acceptable. The food was not seasoned in cooking very well, and tasted bland. The service was good, and the food was brought out quickly, but the end product was nowhere near good enough! I drink in this pub most weeks, and the only time that I see any changes in the menu is when the younger chef there is cooking, but the head chef is too restricted in what he will cook, and when a friend of mine went in just a week after the experience I had, and sent their fish and chips back, because the fish was still frozen inside - something I can attest to as I saw it, I cannot recommend enough that people do not eat the food here and risk their health! If you do go in and ask who the chef is, and the staff tell you it is Martin, for God's sake, do not eat the food! The waiting staff are good, the bar staff are good, and the owner and his wife aren't bad, but the food is like playing culinary Russian Roulette!

We come to eat at The Artichoke fairly often, as my 94 year old mother lives nearby, and this restaurant is convenient.A few years ago there was a small booklet included with our local paper, the EDP, which was a guide to decent restaurants. They said the Artichoke was good - and we agree. The menu is more than adequate, though not extensive. However, everything you would look for on a good pub restaurant menu is there. All our family like it. Friendly, light and bright, clean, prompt service but not rushed, excellent food, not expensive, good parking, and bird feeders just outside the window, with bird books to help us identify them.Like the Eastern Daily Press,we recommend The Artichoke.

The first time we have ever been let down so badly...Having eaten at the Artichoke previously & been really impressed, tonight's experience couldn't have been worse!!!7pm sitting & restaurant not over busy. Waitress delivered wrong main courses to us. Forgivable mistake, with dishes swiftly moved to the correct table.Wife's Veggie lasagne then arrived & it was so dry & crispy that she physically couldn't cut it. We are not ones to complain but it really was inedible, so informed the waitress, who apologised, whisked it away & then came back with the menu & offered the veggie quiche as alternative. We duly accepted, waited 10 mins & were then presented with the quiche dish, which was still part Frozen !!!!Well that was enough for us, nice Friday meal ruined, asked for Bill, paid for what we had consumed left, to find somewhere else.It is such a shame, that what we thought was to become a regular haunt for us, is now unlikely to be returned to, or recommended to others.

Situated in the village of Broome just outside the historic market tow of Bungay is the Artichoke. On an old main road, now by passed, the pub, at first site is, seems pretty ordinary but its well worth a look. Inside it is full of personality and there is a lovely bird friendly garden to the rear.It offers plenty of well kept cask ales and continental bottled beers and is renowned locally for good food

My mother lives in Bungay, and she's 94. Her cousin is a little younger, and lives nearby. So we drive over as it's only 45 minutes, and take the out to lunch. We are never disappointed at The Artichoke. Mother has liver and mash, and there's always too much mash. Great! I help her! Today was fish pie for me (fab) with mash (fabber) plus mother's mash (ouch - very full). Wife had prawn salad, cousin had plaice, mother had liver. All very good. And a trouser-splitting bread and butter pudding. My sort of place!

So glad this lovely little place is on our doorstep. The food as usual was as good as pub food can get. Combined with the buzz from the bar and the very friendly service, it was declared a brilliant end to partners birthday. In our book, the Artichoke is a winner.

This is a good local pub with a very comfortable atmosphere and friendly welcome. We had been looking for somewhere nearby to have an evening meal after a long day spring cleaning and found some good reviews about the Artichoke, so thought we should give it a try. The food we had was not your average pub fair and simply delicious.I had pork loin in an orange and ginger sauce (really had the urge to lick the plate!) and he had the sea bass which he finished off easily.Puddings were slightly unusual but tasty. My pear and marzipan crumble had what seemed more of a shortbread topping than crumble but all good and we couldn't work out what the base of his pecan pie was, but it too was very nice.So in all a good choice and somewhere we shall definitely return.

We came accross The Artichoke Inn whilst researching our family history & found that one of our ancestors was the Innkeeper & brewer in 1845 & as we were in the area we thought we would check it out. We are so glad we did as we found that not only was it a CAMRA pub but that it had also won a Pub of the Year award. The owners & staff were so frendly & produced a beautful, freshly cooked, lunchtime meal using local produce. So if you fancy some real ale, rustic interiers with a Inglenook fireplace, friendly atmosphere, you cant go far wrong other than to chose The Artichoke Inn on the Yarmouth Road.

The Artichoke is as close as I have to a 'local'. I've eaten and drunk there on several occasions and have enjoyed them all. No TV, no piped music, no games machines - just a welcoming pub with 8 cask ales and a sensible menu. You can eat in the restaurant or the bar - the fare is the same.It was the obvious venue yesterday when I met an old friend and colleague for lunch. We both chose the pan-fried cod and chips, deliciously fresh and piping hot, accompanied by pints of Adnams' bitter. These were followed by cheesecake and crumble respectively, both with local Parravani's ice cream. The service was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. All in all, a good experience which I've no doubt will be repeated.

For a pub it has a great atmosphere. This is created by the friendly staff who work there and the service they offer. They have a wide range of beers available and the standard of the ales is superb! The food was great pub food. The steak and Ale pie was one of the best I've had anywhere. The steak was just that, best quality and the 5 of us in the party all enjoyed our choices on the menu.Highly recommended and will use again.

Went here for a Sunday Lunch. The positives: A lovely open fire and welcoming staff. The décor and ambience is 5* and looks like a great place to go for a drink. Thought we were in for a real treat when they said they were fully booked but they would squeeze us in. the horseradish tasted pretty good The negatives: Paid £11 for a Roast Beef Sunday Lunch. Two slices of mediocre meat accompanied by what tasted like frozen out of the packet roast potatoes and frozen out of the packet Yorkshires. The gravy was watery thin and looked like poorly mixed bisto and the vegetables were bland and dry, the cabbage practically bouncing of the plate. I am lost for words how a pub charging £11 cannot even roast there own potatoes and produce home made Yorkshires. I am also amazed as to how it can be fully booked - do people really frequently pay for this sort of thing? In summary, a great place to pop in for a drink as management and staff are friendly, open fire and décor and what looked like a great selection of whiskies. Just make sure you have eaten before you go!

We dropped in late on Sunday and they couldn't have been more helpful, found us a table in the bar and quickly set it up. The food was really good with lots of fresh veg and the beer as always was excellent. Really friendly atmosphere in a very welcoming and well run pub.

Went for a sunday lunch - they use frozen roasts and frozen yorkshires! shocking! when you pay 9 pounds for a sunday roast, you expect to at least have real roasties. not aunt bessies! covered in thin wartery gravy. The staff were friendly but other than that, very disappointing.

For a pub that's won awards for its Camra beer, I fear the Artichoke at Broome won't be winning many awards for its food. We went for lunch and were disappointed. Generous helpings but not a great deal of flavour. A familiar cry where pub food is concerned.

We called in to the pub just after 6.30pm on a Friday evening. The pub was packed. We hadn't booked and were in a bit of a hurry . They managed to fit us in and advised if we knew what we wanted they may be able to jump our food order above that of the table booked in before us who were dithering over the menu. We had creole prawns with chilli mayo which were lovely, the prawns had a lot of flavour and came with a fresh side of salad. For mains we had the special of braised beef with new potatoes and vegetables. The beef just fell apart it was delicious, the only criticism would be that my partners potatoes had a lot of black bits in them. In total with a round of drinks a two course meal for two cost us £40. The restaurant was lovely and clean, service very attentive and would recommend.

My mother is 93 and gets a little confused at times. But all the family love her, and we like to treat her from time to time. Well, as often as we can. She enjoys the Artichoke - and so do the rest of us. So today, 4 generations gathered there yet again. For a pub restaurant, there is a more-than-adequate menu. Having said that, mother normally goes for liver and mash - so do I, as I can then help her with excess mash! We asked for more gravy today (I like to drown my food) and it soon arrived. Cheerful, prompt service, whilst not being rushed. 93 year old mother enjoyed it, as did 3 month old Micah and 6 year old Caleb - and those of us in between.I guess we'll carry on going.

Arrived for for a meal with friends and the bar was buzzing already with a great atmosphere & it was only 7pm. We were all really impressed with the food and friendly service. It's everything a pub should be, with a separate restaurant, not totally detached from the pub atmosphere. Was really pleasantly surprised and will look forward to more visits.

Had burger and chips for lunch. Excellent meat apparently from local Spurgeons butchers. Nice selection of beers. Overall it was ok but nothing special for the highish price for village pub grub.

Went to the Artichoke last night, four of us had a lovely time, food was good and staff were lovely. On leaving we were told that they had overcharged us and her honesty was impressive. Anyway apart from that we had a very warm welcome and would certainly recommend this pub to others, we will return soon.

Based on a previous experience we were happy to go back to this pub restaurant for a family meal. The only difference was this time I was not driving back to London in the evening! Service very acceptable as was the selection of beers available. 6 adults with main course, dessert and drinks (including myself checking out the real ales) came to just over £100. We all enjoyed the food and would recommend going here.

It's just outside Bungay, which is where my 92 year old mother lives. My cousin recommended it, and she eats out a lot and goes there frequently. So that's where we take mother. Nothing really special, but consistently good good and good value.

Went here for a family meal of an evening. Beers in the bar well kept and a good selection. Good choice on the menu, all good honest pub grub, but nothing too fancy. We all had different starters, mains and desserts and every plate went back empty! Very reasonably priced and well worth a visit, car parking outside the door.

Since Nicki and John took over this pub, it has got better and better. The beer is always great with hand pumps and barrels in the tap room. They kept the chef who always does fantastic vegetables(I think the best I have tasted in a pub) and fish and the Sunday dinners are superb and built a lovely dining room. Long may it continue!

Visiting family that had recently moved into the area we ended up in this pub/restaurant for Saturday lunch. Family had received recommendations from the locals with particular emphasis on the wide range of vegetarian options available. (Vegan options available as well)Helpful staff, pleasant location, excellent food and for real ale enthusiasts a tip - arrange for someone else to drive! Reason for the tip as they had a room with 10, I think but might have been more, barrels of which 5 were ready when I was there plus 4 hand pumps.A thoroughly enjoyable experience, next time I go I will get the wife to drive.4 of us eat having main meal, drinks (I had more than 1), dessert and coffee bill came to £71.Looking forward to going back

There were four of us and including drinks the bill was only just over £80.00 which for some great quality beer and two courses each was great value. The food was good quality. It's a bit off the beaten track but really worthwhile a check out

What's not to like ! Lovely building - bit like stepping back in time - panelling, settles, horse brasses, pictures, inglenook - wooden and tiled floors - real ales - good reasonably priced wines by the glass or bottle - bar area to just pop in for a drink and a mardle - few tables and a separate dining area. Spotlessly clean, good atmosphere, warm welcome and efficient service. Mix of customers - locals, couples, family groups, ramblers and a dog under a bar table. We had been recommended by friends and very much enjoyed a quick lunch - plenty of choice from steaks to fish and chips, sausages and filled rolls. Meat was from the local butcher. We had whitebait, minestrone soup and steak pie - one real plus was no butter in foil packets, no tartare sauce in sachets but the real thing, plus French dressing in a little bottle. Husband Kurt remarked he would really enjoy this pub as his local - praise indeed !

Tried out The Artichoke on the recommendation of our B&B, & were so glad we did. Really busy bar area, & we hadn't booked a table - but they sad they could accommodate us in half an hour. So we had a drink & perused the menu, & were ushered through to our table bang on time. One chicken with orange & tarragon gravy; & one red snapper with lemon & chilli butter - truly excellent. Our requests for more gravy (as it was so good) & then some bread to mop up the excess gravy ()s it was too good to waste, were met with good humour; & the stem ginger & italian marmalade ice creams were wonderful. Good service, pleasant atmosphere, extensive wine selection & very reasonable pricing all added up to an great evening.

John and Nicki really know how to run a pub. The large selection of real ales are perfectly kept and the massive selection of single malts would be reason enough to visit again and again, but the factor which makes this friendly pub excel are the staff who run it! We were a party of twelve including three children and the large menu selection ensured there was something to suite everyone’s taste, including the vegetarian options. The freshly cooked food, (most of which is sourced locally) which arrived promptly and at the same time, was of a high standard.

Had lunch here, staff were helpful and pleasant, the food was okay but not exceptional. The setting is quiet with a slight nod to the 1940's. Not sure about the green neon light in the alcove but it was an adequate lunch.

It's a lovely little pub in the middle of the village and at the end of Rockland broad where there are around 8 free morning's, it's great for a overnight stay, so back to the pub great people who make you feel welcome and a nice little area for outside seating on those summer evenings, so yes I'll be going back
