Arnside Chip Shop in South Lakeland

Beware if you are a COELIAC This place says its chips are cooked in a separate fryer which they may well be. However I ate six “ gluten free” chips and two hours later bloating and nausea. Still with me the day after. There must have been gluten contamination somewhere - all it needs is a hand, an implement, ANYTHING to have been contaminated with just a tiny speck of gluten to cause a reaction ( vomiting diarrhoea severe pain dizziness for up to a week) At least it didn’t make me sick this time. Every hotel cafe restaurant in the country should be trained in gluten intolerance/ coeliac. Actually not an intolerance but a serious auto immune disease which can cause hospital admission. We won’t be going back needless to say.

Amazing!! Everytime we visit Arnside we save a dinner slot for this chippy it’s our absolute favourite. Light bite is plenty each, we also get a curry, gravy and peas to share. Would recommend 100%

Excellent service and excellent food! I am vegan, and enjoyed the garden burger in a bun, alongside the chips. All delicious. I was their last customer on Friday night, but they still managed to feed me very well. When in Arnside, you can't beat the view from a public bench over Morecambe Bay

I have heard about this place from loads of different people, go to Arnside, they said, try the chippy there they said. I did and I did. I don't know if I caught them on an off day, but wow. I've never known a chippy to be so slow. I could understand it if I placed a massive order, but it was for a chip barm and portion of chips and a sauce. That was it! Half an hour later we get our food which was decent, but not all singing and dancing that some people have said. Our local chip shop is better! A quick eat it certainly isn't. We even missed our train as they were sooooooo slow. I've seen glaciers move quicker than the staff. There was a lot of standing around not doing very much just staring at the range or chatting with each other. They have a monitor with order numbers on, expected wait time. There was about a dozen orders in front of ours and wow, were they slow clearing them! I assume they actually went out into the bay on a boat and caught the fish, gut it, skin it then cook it for those who ordered fish. They had enough time to do so! Apparently they have an app which helps, but why do you need to download an app for a chip shop that you will visit once? Good for regular customers perhaps but not passing trade. They are not cheap either, no wonder they can afford a custom wrapped car with a private plate. Arnside is nice, it is only tiny, but it has great vistas over the bridge, a couple of good pubs some great shops. We may well go back for a visit. We won't be bothering with the chippy though. If people are happy waiting that long for not so fast food more power to them, the brits adore queueing. The chippy is a decent facilitator for this passtime.

We have been to Arnside chippy many times… it’s always really good. Today was no exception. Even better now that they do gluten free fish and chips. We ordered online, when we arrived the fox was waiting to collect. Freshly cooked and piping hot. The fish was fresh, chunky fillets, with crisp batter. The chips were also perfectly cooked and delicious. The staff were really helpful avid friendly. Highly recommended.

Amazing food. Best fish and chips we’ve had. I can’t believe people complain about the wait. To me this just reflects a good chippy. It’s very modern with a screen telling customers how many orders they are working on and what the expected wait time is. In my opinion well worth the wait but like previous reviewers have said pre order if you’re pushed for time

Ordered ahead and our food was ready when we arrived. Picked up in seconds. Was in a cardboard box and had stayed very fresh and crisp. Ate at the seaside on a bench. Both fish and chips (and scraps) were perfect. Fish delicious and flaky, batter perfectly done. Plenty of chips but not mountains. We’d travelled an hour to get here but it’s worth it compared to other Lancashire fisheries.

Best Chippy by far in the coastal Lancs/ Cumbria area. It is very popular so if you don’t pre order expect to wait, particularly at weekends. I find it amazing that people have cause to complain about the length of queues, these reflect the popularity of the Chippy. If you don’t want to queue download the app and pre order, but bear in mind these slots go fast during Summer weekends. Hard working and friendly staff. Been a customer since they first opened. I have one negative, the shop seems to be trialing ‘chunky’ chips. I have had them twice recently, and personally, I do not like them. You might find them in Gastro pub but they don’t belong in a chippy. i only say this so others might give the same feedback, if I’m in a minority on this so be it, it will not stop me from being a loyal customer of this great chippy.

This is the third time we have got fish and chips from here when in Arnside and we have previously loved them. I hope we caught them on a bad day but the chips were average at best and the fish a little greasy. Still perfectly edible but not as good as previous visits.

Having seen the reviews our expectations were high, maybe too high. It's perfectly OK though, ours were just decent, average fish and chips, but nothing out of the ordinary. Very busy - best to order ahead.

I have not visited in years but as good as ever. They now also do home delivery, and if you go to the shop, you are advised how long the wait will be. This is really helpful but the food is so good that we have never minded how long we had to wait. The average wait seems to be about 15 minutes, but it's freshly coojed to order, great quality food, good portions, and equally good value.

We love this place. Our favourite chippy! We travel from Lancaster frequently. Today the usual chip shop curry sauce was off the menu so we had to order super spicy curry which just ruined the flavour for me. Please bring back your usual chip shop curry sauce!!

Tasty fish and chips. Clean and well organised so didn’t wait long despite the queue. Delicious and not at all greasy. Piping hot and wrapped well so still warm by the time we drove home.

Date Saturday 29TH July '23 This experience had proved over rated, over priced and extremely poor quality.On ordering two portions of haddock and a small chip portion,having waited over 45 minutes.The fish that had been serve to-us had been extremely tough and an off white grey in colour with poor quality.The chips had been greasy almost munched together.The best part of the meal had been the curry sauce to which was aside order which was necessary to make the food edible.Extremely over rated place avoid this place if one cares about quality.

We are regular customers as we spend a lot of time at our nearby static caravan, we have been visiting this Chippy since it first opened, in the 70's I think. I rate this as one of the best Chippy's in the North West. Good chippy's are getting hard to find so don't miss this one if you are in the area. Freshly cooked fish is superb and for the takeaway it is packaged in vented cardboard boxes which minimises continued cooking of the fish whilst in transit. One criticism, I'd love to see a steak pudding on the menu rather than steak & kidney but that's a personal preference.

This is a fantastic Chippy and we cannot praise the team and their food enough especially in these challenging times. Always friendly, even when under extreme pressure which is often these days, whatever we order is always scrumptious.
