This place, although working as a traditional could-not-be-more English club, can be visited as a museum of the Most Gracious Royal Army and Navy, God bless it please. One can appreciate the ridicule or the glorious aspect, with pictures on every wall reminding about every possible glorious fact. As for the hospitality aspect, it was as impeccable as a military parade.

The venue is lovely and unique but the staff unfortunately didn't have a clue about coeliac disease. Before going I was assured that I would be provided with a gluten free option. Family members checked for me too. On arrival I again reminded staff that I can't eat gluten as it makes me ill. I was given a pasta type dish a sort of dumpling. I asked 2 members of staff if it was g/f they both assured me it was. Then as I started to eat it a member of staff ran into the room shouting 'Put it down! Don't eat it'. Needless to say I wasn't impressed. I was then offered a plate of vegetables so they failed to provide me with a proper meal, more importantly the staff here need more training on allergies and how to communicate with guests. Someone could potentially die from mistakes like this. They need to understand this as a matter of urgency.

Had a five-night stay at the fabulous Army and Navy Club in the first week of July - having stayed at St James's Square before I knew the location was first class, so what really made this week memorable was the friendly, welcoming and obliging staff who looked after me all week. A group of us were invited to a splendid, mid week meal, at this grand, old club. We walked there to avoid the nightmare that is driving and parking in this city. Met by friendly, helpful staff who explained where we had to go upstairs. Initially we visited the cloakroom and toilets, which I found to be an experience in itself, with its mature decor and historical military like surroundings. Spacious, clean and tidy throughout the club. Annually, it seems to be quite costly to be a member. Our dining room, table, food and company was most enjoyable. Good service too. We were here for several hours and it was a privilege to be invited to this iconic club. A club for older clientele.

Quite surprised after all the great reviews as I wasn’t impressed at all. We attended a champagne tasting evening last night and other than the champagne nothing else really lived up to expectations in terms of a private members club. Terribly dated decor and toilets that would have been better placed in a church hall. The event was overpriced and there was a mistake with the dress code (which isn’t befitting of the venue I might add). Overall we had a nice evening but that was more due to the company than anything else.

The bedrooms are not of 5 Star quality (nor is the price of them anywhere close to 5 Star prices!). You get a good clean room with a decent, if basic, bathroom and the restaurant is very good as is the less formal Ribbon Bar.What makes the place is the staff who are hugely friendly and welcoming to a man (or woman!). You'd have little chance of finding somewhere else that offers this value in a prime West End location.

A rare piece of history, the human environment too. Both the design and surroundings as well as the people you meet in the bar and drawing room remind you of the great old days of the empire that ruled the world – and I mean it in a positive sense. Its like being invited to Victorian gathering. But its a bit outdated. The design in the common areas could use a renovation, and the accommodation is pushing 2-3 stars level. The rooms could use a major upgrade. Still, its an worthwhile experience.

Through a friend i had the opportunity to stay at the Army and Navy Club on Pall Mall. The hotel itself is a haven for history with many paintings dotted around and specific historical rooms which relate to the likes of Nelson and Wellington, which i have to say are very interesting to see and read about. The decor in the hotel is slightly dated which also runs into the rooms. The rooms however were very clean and tidy so no complaints there. The breakfast is continental with an option to have a full English breakfast for a supplement. There is also a dress code for breakfast so its worth checking this out before your arrival. The breakfast when they finally brought it out (Chef Shortage) was hot and worth the small supplement so don't hesitate to upgrade if you are feeling hungry. The location which i have put as the title of my review has to be the main selling point for me because it is smack bang in the middle of the London action. Overall summary, would not be my first choice of hotel but had a lovely stay in the Capital for a couple of nights packing in as much as possible.

Stayed for two nights with family, usually stay in the RAF club but due to lack of rooms there we stayed at the Army Navy club. The clubs appearance is nice, reception and door staff are friendly enough and the main rooms are decorated to a nice standard. The rooms are poorer than what you would expect for a club with the price tag that they come with. They are small, and sparsely decorated, the facilities in the rooms are fine but I wouldn't say they are a high standard. The kettle had to be boiled on the floor due to lack of plugs. Dressing gowns are at a charge, as is a full English breakfast. These might seem like small annoyances but for the price of the rooms you would expect more. The cleaning staff were lovely and cleaned rooms to a high standard. Breakfast staff are also nice, although the head waitress was asking some people to go and change because of the dress code and others seemed to walk in fine. One of our party had a long sleeve shirt which had the cuffs turned up once and he was asked to turn them down whilst we saw two other men walk in from other parties in short sleeve shirts. A dress code is fine, although it should be used against everyone not just some guests. The club is in a great location but wouldn't tempt me to stay again, as I say the RAF club has a much nicer feel, much friendlier staff and you get a lot more for your money, stay there if you can!

My family and I stayed at the Club for five nights this week, departing this morning. As the title of the review indicates, St James Square is a great venue, with many things within a 15 minute walk: Piccadilly, Buck House, the theatre district, Trafalgar Square, just to name a few; and, of course, the Tube.I'd suggest the Club would be best for singles or, if one's spouse is adventurous, couples. The rooms were last renovated when the Club was rebuilt in the 60s, and much of the furnishings within them wouldn't have been out of place in the 30s. Normally, the term 'large room' is an oxymoron in Europe, and that is quite the case here. Space is modest and it is difficult to find a place for one's empty luggage; movement likely will require a few contortions. The A/C works wonderfully well.Staff are very accommodating. The public rooms are nice, as is breakfast (included), but there is a dress code, albeit more relaxed in the summer. Young children are tolerated rather than welcome (at least by the members themselves), but, in fairness, it is a club, not a hotel. I had the good fortune to be here on the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and they had a fine Black Tie/Mess Dress event, plus celebrations in the Square itself. On balance, I'd likely stay again if I were solo, but not with my family, which is much the same as I'd do in the States at the Army & Navy Club in DC or any clubs in Philadelphia or New York City, for example.

It was some years since I had visited the Rag. This time not the restaurant, but a private function. The porters were helpful and pleasant. Not enough coat hangers for a large number of people attending a function, had to fold and shove my coat on a shelf, but the ladies room was immaculate to start and finish, I like that. The function room is lovely and there were plenty of staff on hand offering drinks. Lunch was tasty but the main course plates were cold which is a bête noir for me. Hot food on cold plates? Nonono. I groaned and others on the same table commented negatively too. This is an old school type place and I am surprised that something so basic was wrong, typical guests would be people who would expect the basics to be right. Our waitress had a face like thunder and when one guest asked for more sauce on her main course, the woman just ignored her. It was quite fascinating, she definitely heard, she just walked on. I also had beans served into my lap by one of the waiters as did others on the table, indeed. I could do silver service better than the people serving our table. Service was disappointing considering there were plenty of staff. The pudding looked lovely and tasted good too, that cheered me.Overall I enjoyed the meal but some attention to detail and staff training on how to do silver service would make things better and tell the chef to ensure the plate warmer is turned on early.

This is a private member's club and the members get the highest standard in dining and accommodation in central London. To put it bluntly most of us won't get the opportunity to join but you may get an invite. The membership shouldn't be surprising - mostly military and this is reportedly one of the best and most exclusive clubs in London. There is a dress code and jacket and tie are required. The Restaurant is a fabulous panelled room complete with imposing paintings of great military figures and would look completely at home in any stately home. The menu has a excellent selection to offer and it all looks and tastes fantastic. Service is superb and the staff are helpful and courteous. All in all this is a fantastic experience and not to be overlooked.

Tiny room, no refrigerator If it were Spain, it would be a maximum of 3 stars.
