I attended a dinner here as a member's guest and really appreciated how nice the staff were about my assistance dog. The vegetarian options at the restaurant were great. This club maintains a classy and elegant atmosphere without the stuffy and pretentious attitudes found at the other nearby clubs, so it's got the best of both. Would highly recommend.

It's my club and it keeps getting better. F&B is stylish, the building well-kept and outstandingly led. The arrival of a younger membership has reinvigorated events. However, the dress code has loosened intentionally, and it's observance even more so. Casual clothes, backpacks, and business calls proliferate now. It's less of a place for proper attire and behaviours and in the day you could mistake it for an upmarket university conference centre. Notwithstanding, it remains my home from home.

You must be a member or a member of a club with reciprocity to buy accommodation. As reciprocal members, we have frequently stayed at the club, perhaps 8 times or more in the past 15 years or so. Initially on their move to St James Square the rooms were pretty crummy, with sagging creaky floors, linoleum bathroom floors and old plumbing. Now td, the rooms have been upgraded to modern hotel standards, though still not air conditioned. As a reciprocal member you can book no earlier than 6 months in advance, which is what we always do for our usual 6-8 day annual London trip. But beware, there are reasonably decent rooms and other rooms in the non elevated block of 1-25, a minimal window, quite small and more suitable as single rooms, often no bathtub and where the double bed eliminated the space for your suitcase. In two of the past 4 stays we have been relegated to such a room, due to "a wedding" booked no doubt after we booked though one would think rooms should be allocated on a first come first served basis. Still, the price even though much higher as reciprocal members, is a bargain compared with nearby hotels.

We attended a wedding held at the club over the weekend. It is an impressive club with grand function rooms, impressive displays and paintings. However, I find it rather odd that the reception is at another entrance down the hallway whereas the main entrance to the building is at St James Square. Staff are friendly and offer good waiting service. Although the rooms look recently decorated with mod cons, they are rather small and the rates are overpriced in comparison with other establishments. We were disappointed on our final morning when the hotel had no hot water. The boiler had broken down. To be fair, the management did finally give a discount upon checkout. Overall, it is a quaint club hotel with excellent food, beers and wine.

Main course was a fabulous cut of fillet steak with a breadcrumbs and horseradish topping, served with sweet potato gratin and steamed broccoli. It was excellent beautifully cooked and presented. This year my wife and I were able to enjoy our stay at The Naval and Military Club at St. James Square in London. The history of the club exuded from beautiful public and dining rooms that we enjoyed. Our membership in the Marine Memorial Association in San Francisco afforded us reciprocal membership of this closed London club. The location was wonderful, and afforded us a unique opportunity to explore the London you only read about, and see in films. The club has it's rules and it's ways of doing things. Of course, the club is really for members who use the club when in London, or on business trips. They really don't enjoy tourists and enforce small rules such as a dress code when using the front entrance of the club. Best to check the rules upon arrival rather than risk a small embarassment. But the location, in Piccadilly, a short walk from Green Park, and Westminster makes it a unique experience. If you can wrangle a visit, do.

I was invited to lunch at The In and Out as it is fondly called and we had drinks in the bar first which was all men and they didn't seem to be at all bothered that a lady was having a glass of wine amongst them - a relief. The front desk is pretty fierce when vetting people who walk throughout the front door. I arrived before my host and was sternly asked to take a seat and wait which is correct but my club the Hurlingham is a bt more relaxed about this so you are a bot more warmly welcomed. the man ding room was simply excellent - great waitress - super menu - beetroot carpaccio and whipped goats cheese with edible micro cress - salmon on some sort of pea puree with something else in it that was delicious. Could nt work it out - we skipped pudding as the bread tray was brought around twice and we couldn't resist it. White burgundy by the glass. all in all a great experience. But it's primarily a men's club and although women are happily there - one could feel slightly like you were the odd person out. A virtual rabbbit warren of corridors so hard to find the ladies cloakroom which was modern and nice. Casual for women.

Reviewing the accommodation rather than the Restaurant.....You cannot find a better area than St. James to stay in London however I have to say be very careful of staying here over weekends or anytime that there is a function. The noise in the courtyard and function rooms on the first floor makes sleeping impossible and the Club does not seem eager to do anything about it. How about telling us that functions will be happening when we book to give us the opportunity to go elsewhere. We were staying in the most expensive room in the Club and could hardly hear ourselves think let alone sleep because of the noise, which continued until midnight then to a lesser extent while staff cleaned up until about 12.45. Their Club rules state noise will be stopped at 11pm...when enquiring of the front desk we were then told noise will be continuing to midnight. Seems some rules apply and others don't.On the positive side...the position is fabulous...just minutes from Picadilly. The staff are also friendly and helpful. However, the number of times things were put on account that shouldn't have been seems that their lines of communication are not always clear.Even though understanding that this is an old building, the facilities are adequate but nothing special. Small things like blinds that don't reach either side of the window so there's light in your room all night, fairly inadequate blankets (cotton sheets, 1 cotton Blanket and brocade duvet cover with no duvet) and limited heating and this in their most expensive room....had to ask for extra blankets..Would I stay here again? Definitely not.....the noise issue arises whenever there is a function booked so happened fairly frequently during our stay. There's much better to be had in St James area and for probably not too much extra money....I do not lightly give bad reviews but I feel this one needs to get out there or there will be disappointment if you strike a function or 2 or 3 such as we did. Heaven help you if you have an early plane to catch.

I have been a member of this Club since the mid 2000s and formerly belonged to another London Club and during the course of business had reason to visit several others. The In and Out (as the club is informally known) is welcoming to women and non-military members and has, by virtue of compensation from real estate development work in the surrounding area, invested wisely in upgrading its facilities. Accommodation is first rate and a full-English breakfast overlooking St. James's Square whilst everyone else commutes to their office is a meal well worth savoring...

This is review for the Naval Military Club (In and Out)Pros - they have updated the bathroom facilities with modern shower, toilet and sink. Beds are small but comfortable. Plenty of task lighting. One big positive -- location -- about 400 yds from Piccadilly station. I understand the purpose of clubs like this -- that is how i made the reservation -- through my own military club -- but folks you are missing the mark when it comes to your guests. You think you are playing with the big leagues but you are still in t-ball.Cons - rooms are 6 ft x 8 ft sweaty cells. There is no exhaust in bathroom and the whole room gets upwards of 85 to 90 degrees when you take a shower. The only ventilation in the room comes from a cracked window, which has no screen or locking mechanism. I was afraid to lift it too much and break it more. I put the fan in the window to keep room cool, but everyday house keeping would take it out, put it away and close all the ventilation off --- so I came back from breakfast or a day of meetings --- to a sweat box.The Coffee room is okay -- the free breakfast is mostly cereal, sugar coated breads, sugared yogurts and sugar syrup coated fruits It wasn't until my last day -- that I was given a menu card for "hot breakfast" items. Im sure regular members know this -- but as a guest I didn't. The coffee in the coffee room is hideously bad - like it has been burning in that pot all week. It is free but don't bother if you are looking for lean proteins.Toilet paper and tissues are on a ration system. For my 5 days i had one 1/4 roll of TP and a box with one tissue. Tissues were never replaced and I went to the front desk for TP -- the attendant made a big fuss about getting a roll for me. (( did I search the room, etc )) If I would have known were to get it -- I would have got some myself thank you. In the end I went to Tesco and bought a roll so I didn't have to be berated by desk clerk again. (housekeeping was never seen or I would have asked them)The views are of brick walls and other maint equipment. See below.Rooms do not have working phones. There is phone bu t it is non-op. You have to guess the times for all facilities and/or you have to keep walking to the front desk (because there is no working phone in room) for things like internet password, meal options, ice.... you name it. I know it is not a hotel but a club -- but some sort of guide page would be helpful. You have like 40 signs about the dress code -- a 1 page list of hours and services shouldn t be that hard. Was asked about what paper I wanted ---but never received an issue of any newspaper. Didn't ask front desk -- too nasty about toilet paper --i didn't think the news was worth another berating.Stairs are very precarious if you are physically limited in any way. Prices vary ( For reciporal) A single is 180 pounds M-Th 80 pounds F-Su One hundred pound difference for the same 6 x 8 cell is very excessive. Supply and demand for London -- but 100 pounds will get you into a Marriott, Hyatt or Hilton -- and you don't have to be snapped at, looked down at or put up with bad manners.

Unless you have specific ties with the naval or armed forces, I think you would struggle to see the benefit of visiting this club. I felt honoured to be invited in and admittedly the whole venue was lighter and brighter than I expected - but the demographic here is grey and ageing, and the staff and offering are matched accordingly. Not bad, but also nothing special.

I have been staying at "The In and Out" for many years, each time I visit London.A few steps from Piccadilly Circus, it is the perfect location for theatre, dining, shopping and business in town.Staff are all very friendly and efficient and welcome you like a long lost family member.Dinner in The Coffee Room offers excellent food in elegant and gracious surroundings at very reasonable prices.A modern business centre had computer and printing facilities.Fast complimentary WiFi throughout the Club.Rooms are not large, but very comfortable and clean.

A nice place to stay for a short stay in London in a wonderful location close to everything. The splendid building itself is a must see and the rooms are fully convenient and equipped, even if the single ones are small and sometimes noisy in the morning when the cleaning staff arrives.A warm welcome and help from the staff at the reception and very efficient service for breakfast and in the bar. Free High speed wifi and TV in the rooms. Very modern and clean bathrooms and showers.

Superb Xmas lunch in a friendly atmosphere - really good chef - unfortunately he is off to new pastures after 3 years or so but I'm assured his replacement will be as good. Good wines too. An excellent club in the heart of London.

The Naval and Military is fearfully pompous when an approach is made for a booking from members of reciprocal clubs. Unlike some smarter London clubs, reciprocal membership cards aren't enough (why not?) - the would-be guest has to go to all the trouble of getting their home club to send an email confirming membership (are there really so many fraudulent attempts to make bookings which justifies all this palaver?)Unfortunately, the club doesn't quite match the expectations that such an obstacle course encourages. Our room on the fourth floor had to be reached through a long labyrinth of corridors and, when finally arrived at, was poky, in my view, (although others in my party found its size 'cozy'). Despite an opening window onto St James's Square, with no air conditioning it would be uncomfortable in warm weather, (as other reviews confirm). Most unforgiveably, for a place that sees itself as a proper London club, it doesn't provide the usual shoe cleaning equipment in the gents. There are building works next door which start noisily from about 7am. We didn't try the dining room ('Coffee Room') but, on the positive side, there are fine public rooms on the ground floor, the mattress was very comfortable and the bathroom was ok.

We stayed here for 2 nights attending a wedding. The room was small with no air conditioning and very hot, the en suite was again small but adequate with the basics supplied.Continental breakfast was included, this was excellent with attentive staff topping up tea, coffee and toast and a great selection of pasties, fresh fruit and yogurts. An option of cooked food at extra cost was offered but not needed. The function food was again excellent, with lovely freshly prepared food served quickly and efficiently, with special requests never too much trouble.Overall the food and staff were as we would expect at such a venue, the accommodation is clean and tidy, but some of the double rooms could really do with being singles, and I am sure some air conditioning could at least be added to the communal areas without spoiling the character of a lovely building.
