Although this cafe looks old and unloved the lunch was amazing. My cream tea had a freshly baked scone and the rarebit was the best I have had . The staff were very friendly and we were moved to a nicer table when someone left . Reasonably priced as well . Would definitely return

Can't think of a more dire, grim cafe in such a vibrant town of Totnes! Out dated, overpowering smell of damp, & no atmosphere. Arrogant bosses that clearly lack any understanding with their staff & it shows, which is embarrassing! Nothing special here....

After completing the Torbay Parkrun my wife and I needed a good Brunch and that is exactly what we got. We had previously been to this restaurant for afternoon tea so we were keen to return. On arrival we were greeted with a smile and seated by a lovely young lady. After looking at the menu I chose the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on a muffin and my wife had a cream tea. The food was excellent as you can see in the picture, one of the best breakfasts that i have had. The service was also great, we met the owner of 8 years who is a really nice chap, and realised that the lady we first met was the manager. Thank you, we will return.

We used to be regulars at this place but the new owners have now driven away all their regulars (see other reviews) with their verbal abuse of their customers. On a recent visit for simply tea and a slice of cake, (should be simple for even the most incompetent cafe!), after taking our order, the tea eventually arrived but no cake. After another long wait I enquired as to where the cake was which we would have preferred to have with the tea! The response from the so called ''manager'' was astounding. She yelled at us '' I cannot force my waitress to cut a piece of cake'' ! and then asked us to leave as we were ''being critical''! We did......never to return until this business inevitably goes bust and some new owners who understand the meaning of ''hospitality'' take over. Meanwhile best to avoid this place and give your money to the many other cafes in Totnes who will appreciate your custom.

We had lovely crab sandwiches for lunch and enjoyed them very much. There was a couple there who were unhappy about their tea not arriving and they were very rude and arrogant to the owner and the staff. It was a real relief when they were asked to leave, as the other reviewer commented.

A very good lunch, including a fine Welsh rarebit, and friendly service (they were short staffed, but that's true of the whole English hospitality industry). One customer started to be offensive to the staff, and was asked to leave, which he did, threatening to write a negative review. Once he had gone, my sense was that everyone around us was very happy.

Absolutely gobsmacked at the smell of mould as soon as I entered the man who runs the place has no sense of manners and must be crazy to think people would pay for the poor quality food at the prices they are! Spoke to a young lady who recently worked for them and was let go due to “not enough business” which is quite ironic really! The way this cafe speaks to their staff is worrying and actually abit sad considering all they need is happy staff to keep that place not looking half as bad as it is! As I over heard a lady talking to a member of staff… It’s too dark in there to really feel like you’re having a happy experience and the cafe just opposite offers nice lighting and a positive atmosphere! At this point boy cott that cafe it’s been running for too long and can’t seem to up it game, time for a change I think.

Small dingy cafe on the high street sticks out like a sore thumb as it’s no where near right vibe for totnes town. No allergen list which is ILLEGAL, but my French friend on holiday had to try a typical English lunch so we went all out and I regret it with all my heart. A lady in there once took sooo long to bring out what they call a “queens tea” About 40 mins whilst training staff to show them how it’s done it cost us just under 50 pounds for the most pathetic sandwiches and scones that were so stale I literally just wanted to eat and get on with my day but ended up being stuck. the quietness was painful and awkward. In other words this place was appalling. I told a lady when I left to train HERSELF with manners and she had none. Felt bad for staff.

I visited with a friend. The waiter wasn’t very welcoming and gave the table a cursory wipe with a grubby cloth. It could have done with a proper wash and the floor next to the wall looked like it needed a good vacuum. Some shelves near the door and cakes were very dusty too, and there was a distinct smell of mould. We were shocked to see that cream and jam were charged as extras, as we have never seen this elsewhere. The cappuccino was enjoyable though surprisingly small. We asked to share a piece of cake but were only given one plate and serviette, and no knife to cut it, though they did manage to stretch to two forks. The cake was pleasant, though not the best of carrot cakes. My friend said the toilets were found wanting. Having walked past this tea room many times over the years, with its inviting display of cakes in the window, it was a disappointment to actually experience it. We felt it was over-priced and the staff clearly need further training. Luckily, we later found the Tamarind Tree, which is a gem and their staff are superb!

Visting Totnes and thought we would pop in as we were passing for some light lunch and a drink . Found the owner very rude ,self centred ,arrogant and spoke to his female partner infront of customers like she was something he had brought in from the street on the bottom of his shoe. Place very old smells damp and fusty tables all sticky. Feel like I needed a tetanus jab when I came out of the place. No manners what so ever . Food wasn’t worth at least half of what it’s priced at by any means . Seem to cover the fact of small hardly un edible portion with salad to make it look bigger which is bland and not fresh. TOTAL DISSATISFIED AND DISGUSTING BY SERVICE AND FOOD . Would advise no one to go in or give the bloke a penny of their hard earned cash.

A lovely, delightful ‘old fashioned’ looking tea room with lots of beams. I had cappuccino with lemon/blueberry cake which was so moist and tasty. Generous size too - took half away with me. The cafe was constantly busy with two people taking orders, preparing food and collecting payment. They were very efficient and totally unflappable. Well done. BTW their crab sandwiches seemed very popular.

What a lovely find in Totnes! My son and I came in for lunch as we were having a day out for my birthday. Couldn't of picked a nicer tearoom. Staff were so friendly and we had a long chat with Nashima ( not sure if I have that right!). We liked it so much we went back later for a cup of tea and my son had a gluten free scone. When we went to pay, Nashima wouldn't let us pay, she said it was a treat for my birthday! How kind is that?!! She was very helpful as my son is coeliac, and there was plenty of choice for him. We will definitely be visiting again as lunch was really good. It added to a lovely day out. Highly recommend eating here!!

My wife and her friend went here for lunch today and had a shocking experience!! Apparently it was very busy, but having to wait for almost an hour for a jacket potato and cheese on toast is very poor service. When they asked a member of staff about the wait, they were told "well if you don't like it you can go!"!! They even had to ask more than once for the bill, and when my wife's friend expressed her desire to complain about the service after paying, the chap (owner/chef perhaps) just completely ignored her!! It certainly seems to have changed a lot since I last visited, which was some time ago - and definitely not for the better!! STEER CLEAR - there are plenty of other eateries in the main street!!

There are some lovely places to eat in Totnes, sadly this isn't one of them! The owner and presumably his Manageress couldn't have been ruder to myself and my friend. After waiting over 50 mins for a jacket potato and cheese on toast, when we politely enquired when our food would be coming we were told its got to be cooked, well I would hope so, and if we didn't like it we could leave, I wish we had! When the food came it was awful, low quality, rock hard and over priced. Then we couldn't even pay as no one would even look at us, clear our table, ask if the food was OK or if we wanted anything else. By the time we did pay we tried to inform the owner of the rudeness of his manager but he wasn't interested and just talked over us. Both of them were incredibly rude and ignorant. DO NOT waste your money in this establishment, there's far better in Totnes and if they continue to treat their customers in such a rude and appalling manner then they won't survive!

Rude, condescending and sarcastic owner/ man serving. Everything was expensive and done as very shabbily. The scones were hard as rock and so dry A tiny pot of clotted cream ( had to pay extra for this!) and £6.00 for a slice of dry cake. An extremely uncomfortable and tense atmosphere- the man was talking to people in such a rude way. Many dirty tables, sticky filthy menus and a dark depressing atmosphere pervaded! We went as a special trip and we all found the experience very negative and very depressing Sugar sachets were not provided and when I asked for some he said ‘ needy!’ Loudly so much so that other customers turned around Dirty trays left on sticky tables I couldn’t wait to get out of there The young lady who took the card payment was sweet I would never return and we all talked about what a horrible place it was on the way home! A couple were turned away despite there being an empty table! ( they were two and the available table was for four!) The most unpleasant man, so rude and really nasty I never normally write reviews but I am astonished this man is still trading ‘ barely there milk’ in the milk jug ( I was too frightened to ask for more because of his sarcasm) Two sachets of sugar Barely any clotted cream ONLY ONE CUP PROVIDED FOR A POT OF TEA! We had two sandwich meals both come with a salad garnish and coleslaw. The coleslaw seemed home made. I always like extra salad garnish and ordered a side salad. The young waitress said yes and placed the order. The extra salad was in a small dish containing mixed salad leaves and about 2 cherry tomatoes cut in half.We had a pot of tea for one and ordered a large cappuccino. The meal was enjoyed and then I asked for the bill, I said I would pay by card and the card machine was presented with an amount of £32.55. I had to ask for the bill! The amount seemed a lot for crab sandwich, cheese and tomatoes sandwich and the extra side garnish plus tea and coffee. When the bill arrived I had been charged £6.95 for the extra garnish, the cost of a meal in itself. I was then told the extra salad was not on the menu! The waitress never queried my request. The amount of extra garnish was the equivalent that my wife had with her cheese and tomatoes that cost £7.95. So effectively her cheese and tomato sandwich only really cost £1.00. When I queried it it was though I was in the wrong for asking for something not on the menu,The manager said "I have to charge you something!" which I agreed, he then offered to reduce the amount by £2.00. Which I told him to stick in staff tips. I felt that this part of the meal was a complete rip off!! I will not be going back and I will be advising friends and visitors to Devon to avoid this once happy and pleasant eatery.

We called in to get a coffee before doing a walk last week. On seeing the lovely cakes in the window my husband and I decided to have a piece of carrot cake to share. Admittedly we did not check the price first but when the bill came it was £5.50 for the cake. We were a bit horrified and questioned the cost. We were told it was because all the prices of the ingredients had gone up. We are fully aware of increased costs and the need for businesses to recoup there lost income due to the pandemic. However, since going to the Anne of Cleaves we have been to several cafes and had some beautiful home made cakes none anywhere near as expensive. It does seem a shame as the coffee was very nice and reasonable.

The second time although the food service had finished for the day, they very kindly made her sandwiches and chips.

Cafe looked attractive from the outside and I was looking forward to treating myself to morning coffee but the man serving (presumably owner) was condescending and rude. Coffee was fine but scone was like a brick and was too sweet to eat – as if it was made by somebody who had never tasted a scone. Owner seemed to feel he was doing me a favour by serving me. I felt so uncomfortable I just bolted my coffee and left. What a disappointment!

I am sorry to have to write this but hopefully the establishment will take note of my concerns and observations.

I had the best piece of Victoria Sponge ever, with some lovely latte. The staff are friendly and attentive and I would recommend a visit if you find yourself in Totnes.

Most of us chose lunch here but the menu allowed for breakfast as well. We are not sure what happened with the breakfast, but it didn't arrive with our other meals so my son-in-law just had to wait. The meals were all tasty and the milkshakes were excellent. My daughter had a lovely ploughman's lunch with a great selection of cheeses. The cakes in the window all looked delicious but we didn't have room for any treats after we'd eaten our meals.

Average cream tea. Scone crumbled and the jam tasted very cheap. Nice staff though. My husband had the crab sandwich which he loved.

Arrived and sat down and was promptly handed a menu. The breakfast was expensive but decided to try it. If you are going to charge for a premium breakfast at least get it right. The Sausages were over cooked and dry and my partner could not even cut hers. Although it was replaced with a freshly cooked one. Which just showed they could cook them properly. We had to ask for butter to go with the toast. The tomato’s still has their stalks attached. Over all over priced and not worth the premium price. Shall avoid this place in the future.

we live at trusham and have had the best cream tea we have ever had . we have been unable to eat scones at many other places because of them being over baked and dry . these scones were soft and absolutely delicious with lots of jam and cream , the coffee was also very good and the service was excellent and caring . the owner was a really nice person and we shall certainly be going back kind regards susan and peter Chittenden .

My favourite in Totnes! Ignore the recent critical comments! I have always found both the food and the service very good! Always greeted with a smile and attentive service! The cakes look very tempting, and apple pie is delicious! Cosy, warm and friendly!

Nobody seems to know what they are doing! S-L-O-W service and don't seem to hang on to their staff - waited FOREVER just for a black coffee - I could've flown and picked the beans and ground them myself quicker! Seating not the best - people bump into your chair when they are coming in and out

We visited this cafe earlier today and were seated quickly, the table was cleaned and menus provided. However, it went downhill from there..we watched other people come in and be served while we sat waiting for our order to be taken. Staff looked at us but no one took our order. After watching a couple, who had arrived after us, be served and tuck into their food, we decided to up and leave after 15 mins of being seemingly ignored by staff.

We were tempted in by the display of delicious looking cakes, and were not disappointed. The chocolate cake was deliciously fudgy and the Victoria sponge perfectly sweet. Both slices were huge! The house blend tea is very good and served at a nice temperature. Plus the tearoom itself is comfortable and cozy, with lovely staff.

Dropped in very close to closing time. However we were warmly welcomed by the staff (more so than the other two cafes we tried). Coffee and a cake in very convivial surroundings. Once again grateful thanks to the staff for your welcome.

Popped in to escape the rain and couldn’t have chosen a better cafe. Amazing cakes, lots of choice and very reasonably priced. The coffee was also really good and the owner was so friendly. Would definitely recommend and will be returning!

So much choice in this beautiful town really could have gone to any of the quirky tea rooms & cafes but the Ann of Cleves took our fancy

We, a mature couple on a day visiting Totnes, decided to try Anne of Cleves for a light lunch. We were not disappointed. The service was very good. There is a fairly extensive menu with 'Light Bites' and more filling combinations. Everything we ordered was to our complete satisfaction.

We decided to have the Queen Ann cream tea, firstly told you can only have 2 types of sandwiches and only one can be meat. The cakes that came out were far to large for afternoon tea and I could have knocked someone out with the rocky road. The scones were heavy and come with jam and cream applied (really) but what disappointed most of all was the service no smiles, no customer service, surprised it was busy. Won’t be going back. Wish I had read the reviews before entering.

The food was awful. All 3 meals said it came with rustic cobs and homemade coleslaw, it didn’t so I asked for it and they brought one out for myself and not the rest of my family and when they did it was shop brought coleslaw and a slice of bread not a rustic cob. £10 for ham egg and chips and it was awful not good quality food or worth that price. Very disappointed will not be returning

We stayed 3 nights, Fri Sat & Sun, very comfortable well furnished room, ensuite, with breakfast (diy) available in little kitchen down the hall. Wonderful old world inn, great bar, and bar food til 8.30 (lunchtime til 5 on Sunday, no evening meal). Very friendly and helpful staff, and wonderful location in the wilds of Dartmoor.

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..
