Angel and Crown in Richmond upon Thames

Richmond upon Thames is an exceptionally pretty and well preserved corner of the UK, and the Angel and Crown is one of its more charming antique pubs. Friendly table service and after we made our booking we even got friendly emails asking if we’d like to join in the quiz on the night we were there. We enjoyed our nachos, fish and chips, Perroni and terrific Languedoc red by the glass. Bill for two came to £45.33 including a £5 service charge.

Nice steak and wine. EXCELLENT service from Liz. Gluten free crumble was a bonus. The atmosphere was friendly but not loud.

Wow! Just found the completely revived Angel and Crown, and what a brilliant evening! An absolute gem in the heart of Richmond hidden off the high street. Fabulous food, brilliant atmosphere and a fantastic set from The Double Buffs. From their first song the place was rocking. Hats off to Hannah and her wonderful team, just the best gang that you’ll find in any pub in Richmond and all of them absolutely right on it. Lived here for 23 years and for me the best pub atmosphere I’ve seen in a local pub for a very, very long time! For sure our new local! Thanks Hannah.

A brilliant find out the the Red Hat Ladies, came across this gem . Dean the barman was welcoming and polite , excellent food and atmosphere , we met some of the locals and had a fantastic time, certainly worth a visit.

We came in last night for the steak special, which was good! Medium rare, well seasoned, sat next to the regulars and had a lovely pink gin and lemonade. Talked local stuff, it was great! We became locals! Tonight we had The Pie, I had the roast beef, husband had the chicken. It was delicious, eat The Pie! It’s a house special on Wednesday, and worth the walk around Richmond. Tomorrow they have live music, so we feel obligated to eat elsewhere.

Really not very good. At least try to smile and acknowledge people when they walk through the door, even if you don't mean it! Is it really that hard? Especially when the pub is more or less empty (I wonder why?) I know what's happening on your mobile phones is probably more interesting than your work place, but presumably you are being paid to greet and serve customers? If not, then talk to your boss. Come on guys, this isn't rocket science - a warm welcome goes a long way, believe me. Staff training and motivation urgently required.

Lovely little gem tucked down a side street in Richmond. The service was fast and friendly and the food was great. Massive portions reasonably priced

The tapas meal was very tasty and not too expensive. The service and the wine were also excellent. This Richmond upon Thames pub is a little tucked away and we were glad that we found it.

Drinks were ok, ordered from the bar, we were sitting outside and my partner went inside to order 2 small dishes. They came out, my calamari was not very nice and at the end they slammed a service charge on top of 2 drinks, which we got ourselves, and two small dishes that were ordered at the bar, shameful!

Looking for a light lunch and a drink we found this pub, off the beaten track in one of the small alleys. Spotlessly clean but with original bar, we received a warm welcome. Great choice of beer and soft drinks. Not a huge menu, we ordered some of their tapas dishes. They were all delicious, nicely presented and good value for money. Staff checked that everything was to our liking. Great service, we would definitely go back.

Top notch staff (Sara), services, drinks, and food. Perfect location just off Richmond high street. Easy to find, great spot! If you don’t visit you have missed out on a gem.

My husband and I booked a Sunday lunch after our bike ride along the river. We were greeted by Geo, the award-winning chef (and landlord). He is super friendly. He suggested the mushroom and Parmesan crumble for me and roast beef for my hubby. The food was served by Te’Anne, a super friendly and smiley member of staff. The food was absolutely delicious. It was worth riding 1h by bike to visit the place. A fusion of British and Brazilian food. We loved it and would def come back and we highly recommend it. Ps: try the churros and caramel cream for dessert. It’s divine.

Had booked a table for lunch yesterday [for self and friend prior to rugby] Whole town very busy as a match on at Twickenham We arrived on time to be offered a TINY table which genuinely would hardly have fitted two plates. Crammed right in by the bar, with no surrounding space whatsoever It was a derisory offer, and the off hand and unpleasant staff could not possibly have cared less. We turned it down and instead had a lovely lunch at the nearby Buenos Aires steakhouse Great food and lovely staff!! Would never ever give the Angel and crown any type of custom ever again Appalling service

I was very happy when I discovered Geo was back in the area again, even though he's been here quite a while without me knowing this. We first experienced Geo's culinary skills when he was chef in an establishment around the corner from where we lived. He never disappointed us and his story continues in Richmond. What was nice was, he spent plenty of time chatting and catching up with each other. Will definitely go for a Sunday roast, as I know he will put his own twist to it.

A really poor experience here on Sunday 30th January. Myself and my girlfriend went in for an early evening drink, a pint of beer and a Aperol Spritz. Back at the table my girlfriend said to me that her Aperol Spritz didn't taste right, was very weak tasting overwhelmingly of soda so she went back up to the bar to ask for a splash more Aperol only to be met by a rude female bartender who said that it was a 'standard' 25mm measure and that we would have to pay over £4... £4.25 if I remember rightly, which we refused to do. Finished our drinks and left. We went to the Orange Tree hotel/pub nearer to Richmond station to be met by a far friendlier welcome and I enquired with the manager there if 25mm is a standard measure of Aperol to which he said absolutely not, 50mm is standard with 125mm of prosecco and a splash of soda. Therefore the issue was one of the following, 1. The female bartender has not been trained correctly, 2. Fullers are not following the recommended Aperol Spritz recipe as per Aperol's website (clearly says the measure should be 50mm), 3. The pub itself is not following Fullers guidance and is doing this as a cheap shot way to raise profits. Either way we will not be returning. It also smelt pretty bad in there too.

food was decent but no staff were wearing masks which is illegal.. one staff was coughing around while serving food which was absolutely disgusting…. I felt feeling sick while eating my food and had to leave in a hurry. Note to manager: get your staff...

Food excellent, albeit small portions & you have to add on extras (like chips) with your scampi, but overall good. Staff can't do enough for you & very pleasant. However like most establishments they are trying to claw back lost monies from having to close...

We went for three roast grass-fed ribeye of beef which was served with roast potatoes, roast parsnip, cauliflower cheese, carrot puree, yorkshire pudding and gravy and this proved so enjoyable. We went for malbec wine and finished with sticky toffee pudding, caramel sauce and vanilla...

We have just had an amazing meal at The Angel and Crown. Chose Moules and Lobster Thermador off the specials. We were not disappointed. Excellent service. Could not fault it. A hidden gem with lovely decor.

I have been here A few times before the refurb but never wanted to come back but thought I wouldsee what it was like since, I had seen such good positive reviews on the new management, I was taken back by the transformation of it all, its a place I could take my mother, it’s a new place somewhere you can go to ,good food, wine and service. Such a welcoming response, attentive bar staff but just overall amazing feeling from what it was before . Well done to the management. Will want to come back again if I’m in the area

Having read the recent reviews we were expecting so much better. The scampi and chips was very average; the chips over-cooked but soggy. More like wedges than the advertised triple-cooked chips. The roast beef was a)very sparse b) anaemic. The roast potatoes were the worst I’ve experienced since school dinners, utterly inedible. Again they were parboiled potatoes with skins on with a bullet consistency that suggested they’d been put dry in the oven. We became aware that the chef wasn’t working that day, so we assumed everything was simply reheated. We then had puddings, two of which were inedible, Apple crumble tasting like blue cheese. On the upside, the staff was excellent; dealt with the pudding issue very professionally and were generous with the compensatory discount. Fine place for a pint of Pride, but we won’t be eating there again.

On my final day in the Teddington area of London, I ventured into Richmond. A lovely stroll along the Thames and a perfect mid-December day. Rarity. I stumbled across Angel and Crown by chance. I was looking for a bite and as I cut through an alley way, there it was. A peak at the menu and I was in. the service was lovely. Fairly busy even for 1130am. Steady turnover. I had a pint and grazed on delicious fried artichokes with a little parm dust and rocket. Yum. My samich with proper English chips was spot on. It was the fig and rocket. A vegetarian delight. Options in Richmond are plentiful. Especially pub style. You can’t go wrong here.

We have come back to the Angel and Crown several times for Sunday lunch and simply for a drink. Food and service are excellent. One of the best food pubs in Richmond .... if not the best.

Amazing value for money! Beautiful steak with salad and chips and bottle of wine..........2 for £30. Taste the wine before so you are not disappointed! Very friendly service and nicely presented...........could not recommend more . Ideal pre theatre or cinema!

Visited here for lunch for the first time today after walking past many times. We had the most delicious lunch. The menu had loads of choice and not just your usual burger and chips. Not only that the staff are really friendly and welcoming and there is a really nice cosy atmosphere. A real gem in the heart of richmond! Wish we had stopped off before and will definitely be back.

The Angel and Crown has undergone a sea change for the better. It always used to be a fairly drab pub with a dubious group of (and I use the term advisedly) users. Under new and enthusiastic management it is almost unrecognisable. The pub has become a delightful place to sink a pint or two whilst watching rugby on TV (or not of course if you would prefer) and to take advantage of a fabulous chef and his kitchen creations. The beer is Fullers, the atmosphere is buzzy and the landlord is personable and amusing. This pub will certainly become my Richmond watering hole of choice.

Yorkies just like my mum used to make at home in Bradford, beef that melted in the mouth and perfect veggies from crispy cabbage to roast parsnip, carrot and swede purée to potatoes and really cheddary cauliflower cheese. Excellent service and fine wine made us all decide that there was nothing to fault and we will definitely be back!

I'll give this Sunday lunch 10/10. Roast beef, beautifully cooked, crisp potatoes and parsnips, plenty of horseradish, cauliflower cheese and perfectly cooked cabbage along with a huge Yorkshire pudding that would make my grandmother proud. Get there soon to try as this pub is going to get busy. So many pubs in the London area are serving industrially produced Sunday roasts that taste like ready meals to cope with the huge demand so I've stopped bothering to book. So I was pleased that friends decided to try this pub out as it is under new ownership. At, last some real food, with a great cook in charge. Well done - I'll be back.

Sunday roast at £18 is grossly over-priced, and then to add a service charge too. Nothing special, wasn't very hot, Yorkshire pudding and parsnip were bunt. Won't be going back.

This place had been highly recommended for food and I looked forward to it. Steak night. My wife’s looked delicious. Mine was over-cooked, tough and inedible. Surprised to be charged for this, I won’t eat here again.

I met a dear friend for dinner and was pleasantly surprised by this great place tucked away in Richmond. Fantastic food and excellent service from Nick the boss and Hannah front of house manager. Strongly recommended

This is a fabulous little pub tucked away in an alley just below the Travelodge. Friendly staff, well kept ale and fabulous food. I visited twice whilst on a business trip and will be back soon. As a non-burger eater generally I went for their Aberdeen Angus Duck Pate and Red Onion Burger, which was sublime. A mixture of locals and tourists, which just speaks volumes.

I experienced this pub a year or so ago - dirty, rowdy and unpleasant. Now, it's unrecognisable! Clean, welcoming, full of fresh flowers and the staff are lovely. Friday night was music night - a very entertaining duo, I look forward to seeing them again! The landlord has done an amazing job turning this pub around - the food also looked amazing!

Although tucked away down Church Court it is literally only a few steps off the high street, so very easy to find.

Recent visit, warm welcome by Management and staff. Good selection of Beers, Wine & Gin. The lunch was reasonably priced for the quality of the food, and was absolutely delicious. Will definitely be returning, highly recommended.

I was recommended to come here for a roast dinner by a friend that lives locally as she said it had new owners recently and it’s changed a lot. I was pleasantly surprised from the minute my partner & I walked in we were greeted by the owner, the service was fantastic before we had even chose our food. Fresh flowers and great atmosphere. To top it off one of the nicest fresh roast dinners we’ve ever had and worth every penny. Definitely will be returning!!

We were looking at the menu outside while the landlord was cleaning the windows. He told us how the pub had been refurbished and opened only a couple of months ago. We were early for lunch but were made a very pleasant coffee. As soon as the chef arrived our chosen Angel platter arrived. Lovely hot giant sausage roll, pork pie and chicken wings. Delicious.

We ate at the pub for Sunday Lunch. Roast were very good and service reasonably efficient. The interior of the place has recently been redone and has been modernised into a very contemporary space compared to what the old pub was. The owner was behind the bar and came around to introduce himself to everyone and make sure they were happy. Certainly would not hesitate to return.

We go out for Sunday lunch every week and enjoy trying new places. To be honest, we had previously avoided the Angel and Crown but heard about their recent refurbishment so decided to give it try. What a great decision! Both the chicken and beef roasts were fantastic. My partner loves beef but avoids it for Sunday lunch as it is very rarely (no pun intended!) cooked to her liking. This was perfect. She was told it would be medium rare and it was - and on the rare side of medium. The portions are generous, there is a good range of vegetables and everything was beautifully presented and well seasoned. The service was understated and friendly. We are looking forward to trying the lunch and dinner menus and will definitely be back.

This pub used to have a reputation as being a bit rough & seedy. My, how it has changed. The new landlord has really got to grips with the place. There has been a smart redecoration coupled with good beer and a decent menu. I had a small dish and it was great. This pub is now worth a visit. Landlord, turn your lights down a little: it’s bright enough to be a squash court. 8.5/10 overall.

Wandered apon this lovely looking pub/restaurant on Saturday when looking for a spot of lunch with a friend after our walk from Kew.

This is a lovely and very stylish pub run by a highly professional team. They really take food seriously and serves top notch dishes that any smart restaurant in the area would be proud to produce. Standout for me last night was a starter of roasted beetroot with a Parmesan panna cotta. I have never eaten anything like it before! Wonderful. We'll definitely go again and would highly recommend.

Nice ambience, quaint pub, Sunday beef dinner was delicious, would have been 5stars if had have been warmer, and my friends beef was too rare for her liking. The crumble with creme anglaise was absolutely 5*. Not cheap but good portion.

We visited the new Angel and Crown last week, after hearing that has been through a refurbishment and a new team is running the place.

This pub is absolutely wonderful. We met up with a close friend of mine and her 10 year old daughter in Richmond yesterday and as my husband likes a half pint we wanted to find a pub that sells hot chocolate as well to accommodate for a 10 year old and after walking in and out of every pub in the vicinity we finally found this gem. From the moment we walked in I realised what a find this was. Nick who runs this pub is lovely and we pub has been beautifully decorated and so much thought has gone into the furniture, even down to the comfortable seats at the bar area. My husband usually likes to stand at the bar but with my friend and her daughter we found a lovely table by the side of the bar. Nick made us the most lovely hot chocolate drinks, even with marshmallows and my husband had a great half. This pub is cozy,inviting and a place you can recommend to go to. We did not try the food but I have just read some reviews so next time we are in the area we will try. As we live in Angel, Islington we are not usually in this area but we will certainly makes this our no 1 destination without any hesitation next time we are. Nick well done and so lovely to meet you yesterday.

Lovely pub tucked away behind Richmond High Street, visited for the first time with my family for Sunday lunch today. Food was amazing - generous portions, the whole menu sounds delicious and we can’t wait to come back again. The recent makeover is stylish and modern, lovely drinks menu and a fabulously warm welcome, Love it!

I have never really paid much notice to this once dusky little pub as its tucked away in the centre of town. I have to say, now it's clearly been given a bit of tlc it was a pleasure to visit! The new look is lovely and the food... wow! After having the croquettes and the sticky toffee pudding, I just wanted to give the chef a hug. With a great drinks selection and the whole show being taken care of by the friendly staff. This place is definitely on at the top end of my favourites list.

Me and my boyfriend have recently moved into the area of Richmond and as such, like any other newby took to exploring the local bars and pubs. Luckily we came across this little gem. Upon entry we were greeted by a big, warm, friendly welcome by all staff, swiftly sat at a table and served our drinks. A quick look at the menu and we thought we’d give it a go. So pleased we did! I have never seen classic pub dishes so well presented. First, we shared the Hummus with flat bread, full of flavour and quite light so not to put you off your main! For our main event I enjoyed the fish of the day - smoked salmon gnocchi. So fresh I thought I was still by the sea. My boyfriend went for a more traditional dish in the burger, but still just as tasty! We were informed that the pub had just been referred and a new landlord in charge. All I can say is, they are doing quite the job. Really worth a visit. We will be returning.

Love this little pub tucked away behind Richmond High Street. Food is really amazing. The new chef produces gourmet versions of pub classics that taste and look amazing. I’ve had the pork croquettes twice they’re so nice, and the steak and ale pie is great and so is the mushroom and chestnut one. Veggies are perfectly cooked too and it’s all presented beautifully. The new landlord and the refurb have made a huge difference to the ambience of the pub so it’s a really relaxing place to visit now. Really recommend it.

We had dinner in the private dining room at the Angel and Crown and it was very cosy and the service and food were excellent. As it was New Year's Eve there was a great band playing and we all ended up singing and joining in the fun with the rest of the customers in the pub. You could see that the landlord has worked hard to make this pub a place where people can feel relaxed whilst enjoying a great standard of service and food. The fact that it is not on the main road but tucked away in Church court away from the traffic was definitely a plus and we will definitely visit again.

I had initially thought that this place could be quite quiet given it's almost hidden location, but no! Both times I have been the place has had such as lovely chatty atmosphere with everyone being, customers and staff alike, so friendly.

This pub has been under new management for a few months and has just been refurbished and the kitchen reopened. Well worth checking out again.

We normally pop into The Angel when we're in Richmond and always get a warm welcome. This was our second visit since the (very nice) refurb and sadly it was so noisy we had to leave.

History has it that this Pub was once the best pub in Richmond

Feels like a locals pub which really welcomes strangers too. Jess and Jack, the bar staff made us feel like locals but, despite their best attempts, we didn’t try the many homemade vodka shots which included Marmite, Chilli, Dolly Mixture etc. The pub served pub food, which we didn’t try but there was a lovely aroma The bar focusses on sports and has, at least, 4 TVs. The pub is a Fuller’s pub but it did sell a Cornish ale - Tribute, amongst the guest ales.

Good range of beers. Does not seem to get too busy as it is off the main drag. Friendly staff. Didn’t eat but the food looked decent. TV for the rugby union and football.

The thing that appealed most about this pub is the sense of nostalgia it brings. You'd be hard pressed to find a traditional pub like this in London. This place was full of locals, nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

Yo voy a menudo con mi pareja después de la cena en Richmond vestido o vamos vestidos informalmente en todo lo que encontramos en la planta ese día. This is my fourth visit to the Angel & Crown.The beer,atmosphere,televised sport was superb.Im not sure about the food as i didnt have time to eat but i did glance at the menu and i think they need to adopt a more "pub grub"approach.I would point out that the staff were really professional with the exception of a rather scruffy looking female who seems to enjoy the sound of her own voice and swears at the younger staff................time she left.

El paté de naranja estaba bien, pero la inexplicable puñado de hierbas secas en el pan y el uso de propagación en lugar de mantequilla hacía poco apetecible. También tuvimos el quiche que estaba pasada al parecer tras ser calentados. No tenemos Sky Sports y el personal era muy amable, no es realmente nuestra taza de té.

El pub tenía 0 ambiente con una fila de oriente viejos de jure sentarse en el bar y mirando con en la pantalla del televisor. (Nada contra oriente viejos, pero sólo el entorno ideal).
