American Way in Sutton

Burger (half pounder with mushrooms and bacon) was nicely cooked and delicious but the counter/service area is very greasy/grubby and the menus, table coverings and seats so felt like they had a layer of grime from the grill. This place has been open for 40+ years and its good is perfectly good - just feels like it's been a long old time since it was given a thoroughly good clean.

Lovely place with very good food

This use to be great place to go but has gone down hill over the years poor quality food and customer service is pretty poor, especially the guy that cooks. Much better burger places in Cheam now than this place

Always very happy with American Way and the Red Billy Burger is my husband's favourite as it's a great vegetarian burger but the last order we made (Uber Eats) after 50 minute wait which was expected and after my husband bit into his burger it was a beef patty! Very disappointed especially as it is one of our favourite restaurants and their food is so tasty. But a beef patty instead of a vegetarian burger is not acceptable.

Very sad, have been going to the american way for over 3 decades, and it is at the lowest level it has ever been at. The soul has been ripped out. No atmosphere, owner not child friendly, they only care about delivery orders now. To be fair the food is still nice (not as good as used to be) but took forever to get order right, had to remind them of sections of the order. Child was sitting nice and quietly in one of the tall chairs watching the cooking as they have always done but current owner moaned at her and said need the room for the delivery drivers. You can tell a lot of people must think the same as used to be rammed for seating, we was the only ones. Used to be the place to go with friends and family. Now over priced and a sad shell of what it used to be. Wont go again. Unless gets taken over. Sadly, prioritiseing on delivery.

Honestly the staff were lovely, but I’ve never been so disappointed when it comes to the food… I ordered a chocolate shake and my friend a white chocolate, yet mine was lighter than hers and tasted exactly of vanilla? I went to ask the staff if I had received a chocolate shake and before I could say anything about it she apologised, which shows they know it was done incorrectly 🤷‍♀️ she was lovely though, and then added extra chocolate, but maybe even to much as the shake then tasted like off milk. The restaurant also seems to lack ventilation, as when the staff were cooking, there was steam EVERYWHERE, to the point where you couldn’t see properly down the other side of the room, we eventually left because our eyes started to sting. Won’t be coming back here, however I do have to say even though the service wasn’t great, the staff were lovely people, it seems whoever is in charge of them seems to be the incompetent one.

Just had a lovely Breakfast at the American way and must say very nice. The staff that work hear are very friendly and make you feel welcome and the food and drinks are very nice. 👍👍👍👍👍

I hate leaving negative, but hopefully constructive criticism, with room for improvement. I don't know what's happened to this place, it used to be amazing. We had dinner here, burgers were pink inside, to me, undercooked. Chips were lovely though, service great. Place is sticky, looks run down inside and considering it was minus 4 outside, there was no heating on and we were all cold throughout our meal. Not owners fault, but didn't help that delivery drivers kept leaving the door open. Please make this good again, like it used to be. Brighten the place up with paint, revamp the tables and seats and cook your burgers a little longer. Can't fault the service, my milkshake was gorgeous, but the burgers and restaurant need much improvement. This place used to be packed, but completely empty now. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. Won't be going there again for a while. Hopefully improves in the meantime. I'd hate to see this place close down, especially when it used to be amazing. Please don't take offence, but take notice of the review of where to improve.

Beware: serious food poisoning from this place. Both my husband and I woke up in the middle of the night throwing up and with bad stomachs after having a meal from here, unfortunately developing fever next day on top of this. Despite the food being great tasting, would not be risking again - shame as had been on our radar a while and we enjoyed the food while eating. I hope they improve their food hygiene practices.

Had burger and chips takeaway. When I got home I found the burger was under done and no relish bun was dry. Chips had no seasoning and were only warm. I haven't used this place for a while and would not use again. Wetherspoons burger far superior lesson learned.

We love the milkshakes here - made with ice cream & are super tasty! Many flavours to choose from Update - just bought a few more, always a pleasure, tasty & highly recommended!

Today we had a burgher each with my friend, and a she has asked for cheesy chips instead of the regular ones included in the price of the burger. We also ordered one more burger to take away also with cheesy chips. The owner charged as £6.00 extra for 2 portions of cheese. He argued that this is absolutely right and fair. Agree to disagree. Bill came to £43.65 for 3 burgers and 3 tea's. Enjoy American Way in Cheam Village.

The chips were yesterday's chips re-cooked, greasy and the portion size was disappointing. The large chips would of fitted in a small box. The grilled halloumi was more like grilled mush and was very greasy also Not impressed whatsoever.

Have used the American Way for years, eat in and takeaway, tonight we had a takeaway, we have just thrown most of it away, soggy chips, burger pink inside and coleslaw not coleslaw, red onion chopped with what tasted like yoghurt, totally bland, such a shame as always been very happy, usually run by younger people, 3 older men working in there today, think it will be our last visit!

The employees were very polite and friendly. My food was fresh and it came out quick. My burger had just the right amount of mayo. The sandwich was neat and wrapped to perfection.I will be visiting this store again. 10/10 experience

This was my favourite place to hang out with my friends when it first opened many years ago. The food was great, as was the service and owner. I then moved away from the area. Now all these years later I have visited twice in the space of three weeks. The front door has moved but the quality of food and service is still exemplary and the Owner/Manager (?) is very welcoming and friendly. If only I lived closer.

Been coming here for 30! Years great little spot for a tasty burger and shake, first time in ages but I had a lovely dinner with my eldest daughter, burgers were absolutely amazing as always, Heidi the waitress is so lovely and friendly, all happy and great value for money, love this place

Food OK, Service decent and reasonable prices.

Very nice food. Good price. Can tell they care about the quality of the service they provide. Both members of staff were very very good. We were 2 adults and two children under 3 years of age and all enjoyed food and experience.

1 1/2 wait with only half orders coming to the table a shame used to be so good but owner doesn’t care anymore feel bad for the nice wait staff.

Terrible service - 50% of the meals were served wrong . Half of our table left without eating anything . The wait to get served the wrong food was 1.5 hrs . Won’t be returning here again !!!

This place is a local family favourite. Great selection of burger, milkshakes and ice cream floats, and the best chips in the area by a mile. We usually order a delivery online, but going in is also great if you are in Cheam. Lovely friendly service, seating like an American diner, good all round.

Visited this place when staying in Surrey for the weekend. Not a great smell when you enter, tables not cleaned and sticky. My friend ripped her top on a nail that was sticking out out the side of the seat. Food was overpriced for the average quality. When we were leaving we said to the manager about the ripped top snd the nail and they said sarcastically “ ohhh that’s unfortunate” and laughed. They didn’t ask where the nail was so this could be rectified. Don’t go here, low standards, lots of other safer places to visit. So sad to hear your terrible attitude when we were leaving!

Great friendly service, with tasty food and generous portions.

Waited an hour for order.watched a couple leave after waiting 40 minutes and being served food they said was inedible. Then an apology to say our order was lost by the waitress.The owner lied,the 2 young ladies were pleasant and asked if that was true they were afraid to answer.The floors slippery with grease and food scattered on floor behind counter. Never again ,a shame as an excellent restaurant when Steve ran business ,ruined mother's day meal.

I have been a regular customer for 30 years since Steve sadly passed the place has gone down hill. Tonite was ment to be a family meal. What a joke waited 45 minutes then told our order was lost. Noticed other customers got up and left due to sub standard food igave them the benefit of the dought big mistake. The place is filthy greasy floors. The night ruined. I would not recomend.

Ordered a take away. Friendly waitresses, burger was good. Chips ok, but would be better to have french fries rather than English chips. Would of had a 5star rating if Chef asked if we wanted salad on burger, or sauces on burger and salt on chips as was served very plain.

Been eating great burgers here, since...when I were a lad ! Always great flame grilled burgers, always good, friendly service, always great value for money. A little gem of a restaurant in the heart of Cheam village.

First ever visit and wont be the last

Food was OK. Cheese tasted odd on burger and felt heavy in my tummy all day. Burger very overdone. Didn't look too clean.

Just a warning to people that are vegetarian, this restaurant doesn’t properly cater for you as They cook their vegetarian food with the meat- on the same grill etc. we ordered a vegetarian burger with halloumi, and as you can see the chef cooking we watched as he cooked our burger in the same fryer as the chicken nuggets, then put our halloumi on the same grill with beef burgers! Needless to say we didn’t eat any of it. Such a shame, my husband enjoyed his beef burger & chips though!

The American way specialises in burgers. I have been a customer since the restaurant first opened almost thirty years ago. It has changed owners two or three times. Current service, food and hygiene below standard. surprise the inspectors have not visited or given warning notice.

Absolutely shocking smell from heating vents as soon as you enter. Burger and chips was so bad it was almost unbelievable, the milkshake was just cheap ice cream put into a blender with ice cubes. This place was not like this as I remember. Please don’t waste your time or money going there. Supposed to be a birthday lunch for 13 year old. Seats ripped and table greasy. Shocking

We have been regular customers for many years now and have loved the food. But recently it has not been great. This time I went for a chicken burger, it was like they found the most cheapest southern fried burger and served that.it was more like a frozen mushed up chicken burger which tasted horrible and was rubbery. The chips were a weird texture. My husband had a burger and it was like it had just been shown the grill, it was still mooing. Burger was barley cooked. I know they like to get deliveries out quick but still this was awful. I am really disappointed as it used to be so good. Will not be returning.

The quality of the meat was not good.The smell/smoke from the grill was everywhere, not sure if the extractor fan was off for the day. The beer was good. I won't be going back.

Food was alright. But definitely wasn’t American. The fries were chunky british chips and the burgers felt more British than American as well. I would consider moving towards American French fries in the future if you want to make your restaurant more authentic.

My husband and I have been regular customers of the A.Way since it opened in the 70's & have always loved it. However in the last few years since it changed ownership the quality of the food has deteriorated, today we ordered a burger and chips and it was horrible. The chips were overcooked and all 'bits' and the burger was not like a homemade one that they used to be like. Definitely won't return again.

Food is usually good but dont expect them to put you first if you order a takeaway. All the deliveroo and Uber takeouts get done first. Waited over 45 minutes with kids in the car. Very unhappy and not adequately compensated for the awful service

I love the milkshakes and burgers also ribs we're pretty banging aswell and the chips were nice and crispy.

All cutlery had water stains and steak knife was dirty. Toilet's floor was oily, easy to slip. £8.50 for microwaved lasagna. The only good thing about this place is milkshakes.

My family and I went to American Way this month and found that the staff and chef were friendly and very welcoming. My two young children loved the milkshakes too. We didn’t book and just turned up and there was plenty of space. We had the burgers and the children had fish gingers, food was hot, delicious and arrived quickly, all was cooked fresh. Loved the extra relish, onions, sauce you get on the side. Would definitely return

Just had our first visit here as was passing and had been recommended the place. The burgers were delicious and portion sizes very good! The young male waiter served us and he was really helpful and friendly. I had the sunset burger with blue cheese which was yummy. We have given up on long leisurely lunches as we have a toddler so this place was perfect as the service was quick and it’s casual. Our little girl loved dancing to the rock n roll diner style music. Good value too (it was about £8 for my large burger and chips) and we were able to park for free right outside. Our little one loved the milkshake, we found the place very child friendly and we will definitely go back again!

1st time out with hubby we phoned to book a table, . all booked for 7.00 pm. On arriving was greeted fine . My husband ordered a San Miquel when it arrived it was so cloudy my husband sent it back no problem changed to bottle Stella . I ordered a Mushroom cheese burger my husband had a Jackpot so it was called.. The food was OK eatable but wouldn't say they are totally the best burgers . I finished left some on my plate, the young girl who was polite went to take my plate and onion rings that was in the bowl even though my husband was still eating....... Well this was the biggest shock ..... I went to the toilet they look like they need a good clean. Hole in the ceiling. Went to pull the chain but it wouldn't flush so left it. Then ..... went to wash my hands no water .... surprised there was hand-wash I used that with toilet paper to open the door which again needs some attention. When I got back to my table I spoke with the I presume Manager who said yes its been like that and nobody turned up ....... .. come up with some story about it .. I then said that why hadnt a note been put up... suddenly the two young girls were writing a note .... then cellotape it to the door ... Obviously we asked for the bill and left.... the Manager did apologise...I I wouldn't go back there. One more note if you r between 17 -23 you would love the Music .... Unhappy customer .

Edited/Updated Review**** 20/05/2021 So unfortunately the quality has gone down hill, which is such a shame as we loved this place. To explain in short, meat patties are now cheap, thin, tasteless and always come overcooked/slightly burnt. The bread baps have also been replaced to a cheaper, smaller alternative. The chips thankfully seam the same but they aren't the main element of the order. I don't know why they've made these changes but sadly we will no longer be returning. -------------------------------------------------------- If you love burgers (who doesn't!) and you can't decide whether to go out to eat or a takeaway then you must go here! The choices and the quality of the burgers is flawless!

Great range of burgers, and always a friendly welcome and good service. Tonight I had a pepper sauce "Sloppy Joe" burger which was delicious, and the chips were great too.

A quick stop for my husband as we were out and he got really hungry so at 16:00hrs i went in and asked the owner to prepare a quater ponder with cheese and a portion of chips. I must say that it didn't look like a quater ponder as the bun was small but my husband was very happy. It was fresh and very well made👍🏼

Used this place since it opened and sad to say seen it slowly go down hill, tonight’s burger will be the absolute last time we will ever order from here, burger meat rock hard to the point of inedible, didn’t have the sauce we asked for so used completely different sauce left with nasty taste in mouth for reasons more than just the burger.....

Top burgers .i would recommend to anyone to enjoy pure american burger type.extremely tasty and beautiful atmosphere.staff very attentive to details and polite. coming back again soon.

We came upon this by chance. One of the last proper burger bars, great burger and great chips. We were invited in to put on the dressings. NOTE: This is in Cheam Village, not Sutton.

Have been enjoying food here for many years. Always good quality, great portion sizes and outstanding value for money. The milkshakes are exceptional and there are burgers to suit every taste. I love the Mexicana with a side of jalapeño poppers. We have enjoyed a few take aways during lock down and as the food is cooked to order, you are always guaranteed "straight out of the fryer" chips and freshly flame grilled burgers. Superb!

Wow standards for this place have gone down you would think during these times food would be sent out at the best possible presentation I used to eat at the restaurant and was always pleased with the food so I thought I would order it to be delivered what a disappointment not cheap and could have got better from a kebab shop for half the price

Five stars for the service, the staff is very polite and accommodating. The shakes are amazing, highly recommend the chocolate shake. However the burgers and fries are a let down. Super oily, cooked from frozen, it doesn't taste freshly made. But it tastes like fried again so bland and oily. I know burgers are not meant to be healthy but kebab shops do better burgers, even the bun were soggy. Disappointed really won't come back. I guess might be worth trying once for the shakes otherwise avoid and go to Nandos.

Delicious flame grilled burgers and great milkshakes! Not the best burger I've ever has as the meat was cooked a little more than I like so it's a bit dry. Very good though and reasonably priced.

First time we used this place we ordered a delivery, food was amazing, well cooked and very well presented. We liked it so much we decided to venture out and eat in, big mistake... signs outside state they are social distancing, we booked ahead to ensure we were seated and yet absolutely no social distancing at all and no toilets to wash hands etc, we were sat in between two families that knew each over and had the pleasure of their kids running around constantly.... the place itself is small, dated and not clean, the kitchen is right next to you and it gets very warm. Also the staff are constantly walking right next to as the layout is very cramped. Food wise the visit was a tad over cooked, apart from that no real issues,

First visit here for lunch today but I'm sure it won't be the last - yeah, it was that good. The table was cleansed as we were offered our table and they were all nicely socially distanced. The nicest and thickest milk shakes arrived quickly followed by a seriously tasty starter platter Then came the burgers, they were superb. I had the Hangover burger, it's a monster and brought most of it home so missed out on the desserts but they looked great. The staff and waitresses were extremely attentive and polite making for a very pleasant dining experience. Recommend you visit this place when your majorly hungry.

Went for my granddaughters 4th birthday meal. Burger wasn't cooked. Complained and another was given but when it was brought to the table was told it was like that because we hadn't said how we wanted it cooked. It was a burger not a steak!! Surely red in the middle is not how you cook a burger. Waitress was lovely but being argued to by the chef at the table about why it was raw spoilt the meal

Food was nice but I used the Amex shop small offer to purchase my order and the man behind the counter was ranting that he doesnt use amex as it costs him too much. I tried to explain to him that he should take this up with Amex but he kept going on...at one point he was trying to force us to use another payment method. Actually quite embarrassing in a restaurant full of people and the other staff looked embarrassed by his behaviour too. Probably won't be returning just based on customer experience
