We recently had our wedding ceremony & reception at Alton House Hotel & couldn't recommend highly enough! From our very first enquiry, Issy has guided us through every step of the way, answering all my questions (and there were a lot), helping with recommendations & being there to support us on the day with any logistics & stresses that wedding planning throws at you. She's an absolute super star! So thank you. She also introduced us to Lemon Stone Events, their event caterers, who put on a superb 3 course sit down meal, as well as an evening buffet. And introduced us to their events DJ, Ian, who had our guests dancing all night long. The hotel is in a great location, near to the station for guests travelling, but also really peaceful in the gardens where the ceremony was held (you could hear the birds singing!). The gardens themselves are lovely & very well cared for too. We stayed a few nights at the hotel too - the beds we super comfy & breakfast was delicious. Would 110% recommend for a wedding or any event. I couldn't be happier with how everything went & our guests are still raving about what a good time they had.

We booked a table for our wedding day, a simple luch after the event. We understand things happen out of one's control but:- We requested a booking online, they failed to respond, we called and booked a table for a small party of six adults and three children, at first they did not require any menu information, then days before they changed thier mind and request menu choices, then on the day four hours before we arrive they left a message saying they had to cancel the dinner, we called back and they apologised and wished us the best of luck! No recommendation to where we could go or any help finding another venue nearby for lunch. Disappointed to say the least.

Rude patronising manager who has no understanding of VAT invoicing, probably avoiding tax.

Second visit here and booked the luxurious room with balcony. Received a tired looking room, that was given accidentally, but quickly resolved. Chap at bar was like a 5* butler and was gonna eat elsewhere, but quickly persuaded by him and pleasantly pleased. The room I got by accident, I would of been annoyed, but what I ordered was nice once resolved. Will stay here again when in area. Enjoyed my stay here, despite swerving it originally after reading just the neg reviews. Comfy beds, excellent service from front of house staff and great location for what I needed. Food was excellent, but limited choices on menu. Barmaid to receptionist excellent. Will stay again.

The hotel and rooms are a bit out dated. I had asked to be switched to an alternative road to the one I was first offered due to it being on the side of the road. The second room had a more modern feel but neither were particularly well cared for. I booked a garden view but really it was a car park/rooftop view. The staff however and location to town couldn’t be faulted.

A lovely little gem - a perfect wedding venue, with indoor and outdoor spaces - to cater for any weather. Food tasted delicious and the wedding suite looks great.

This is a cheap hotel. You get less than expected, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The rooms aren't cleaned properly, and the rest of the property has cobwebs and is generally not clean. I would even say that some parts of the hotel are absolutely disgusting. I raised my concerns with the unfriendly staff and was fobbed off with excuses. From my experience, I don't think they actually care about their reputation. If you're looking for a cheap and tacky hotel, this is 100% the hotel for you. Just don't touch anything. If you do care and want to give your money to amazing hoteliers who genuinely care about their reputation, then there are other brilliant venues nearby.

This visit was on a sad occasion, The wake of a good friend who passed at the great age of 98 The hotel provided a first class service and Hot and Cold Buffet, on this occasion it would have been inappropriate to take pictures. The hotel was the ideal location for such a sad occasion and thier service and food were correct in areas.

Left an item behind, called the next day and the person on the phone said they would contact housekeeping and call back but never did. Breakfast was ok, but overpriced, no hash browns (sold out) scrambled eggs were a bit green. Had the last slice of bread for toast, no more provided. Fruit juices were taken away before we finished brekkie which was a shame. Bacon was good, sausages dried up. Room was what you would expect in a Travelodge type of hotel, thin walls, you can hear next door's TV when trying to sleep.

Such lovely service! We booked for lunch, party of five on Easter Sunday. We were looked after beautifully. I am vegan, and the care and consideration of that fact was way above what I’m used to, in particular the lovely John; friendly, good humoured and professional. I don’t make a big deal out of being vegan, but he took care of it as well as making sure the rest of the party had what they needed. Lovely lunch and kudos to a fab staff, all of whom were very welcoming and an asset to the hotel.

First time ordering a takeaway from Happy Valley and the last. Service was pleasant enough and food was reasonably prompt. Unfortunately it was absolutely tasteless. Six dishes ordered and only the textures were different. I did not know Chinese could be so bland.

After ordering we spent 40 minutes waiting for our appetisers and only 1 of 5 occupied tables actually getting food in that time. The waitress came over at the 40 minute point and wanted to confirm the order. At which point I got up and confirmed with the kitchen if they are now starting our order. To which I was told the chicken takes 30 minutes and it would be with us soon, while looking over their shoulder to see our appetisers hitting the grill. I then told them don't bother I want a refund. The pepsi tasted watered down and the place was cold with people keeping their outdoor jackets on. Given a full refund. My opinion from what I've seen here for a copycat Nando's is they are more interested in online takeaway orders that footfall through the door.

My husband, son and I thought we'd try an evening meal at The Woodlarks. We were very disappointed. It was very quiet (one staff member was painting the fence!) So had a huge choice of tables. It was clean and tidy and we opted for a booth. Food took 45 minutes to arrive and sadly was not worth the wait. Steak was of poor quality and not cooked well, it was over cooked one side and slightly less over cooked the other. The greens sprinkled over my sons chicken were of different ages, some fresh and some days old. Had to go find staff to ask for sauce and then go find them again to get serviettes. No one checked in to ask how food was. When we left, the bar was completely unattended. We most definitely will not return. It was a waste of our time and money. Should've gone to macdonalds!
