The tea room was shut last time we were in Allonby so we were pleased to see it was open. We were stopped from entering at the door in a slightly uncomfortable manner. We asked if there was a table for 2 which there wasn’t. We asked if there might be one later and were able to put our name down and to come back in half an hour. Our waiter was really polite and friendly but in general, the service wasn’t great and we had to ask for our drinks when we saw 2 tables who arrived and ordered after us and was clear ours had been forgotten about. Our table didn’t get cleared for a while despite several staff walking past and it was only when we grabbed the attention of someone and said we’d like to order cakes that it was finally cleared. The whole atmosphere wasn’t particularly friendly or nice. Unfortunately a disappointing experience and we wouldn’t go back in a hurry.

Absolutely love this place. Visited for first time yesterday but I know we’ll be revisiting many more times. Brilliant service, polite, extremely helpful and friendly ladies. The menu was jam packed with choices… something for everyone I had a meal from the specials board and my partner chose a vegan nut burger, both dishes were packed with flavour, beautifully presented and delicious. A total gem of a spot- total taste sensation x

I first tried this café as a little treat for two of my granddaughters. Stylish and homely it was a genuinely lovely experience. The girls barely left a crumb, and my all day breakfast was beautifully cooked, filled the plate, prepared and served very quickly by the friendly staff. Since then, my wife and I and two friends have eaten in the café and were delighted by the quality of the food (the coffee is amazing) the service, and the overall experience. Relaxing and exceptionally friendly staff - brilliant

We visited Allonby on Fathers day and decided to have lunch at The Allonby Tea Rooms. There were 7 ( 5 adults and 2 small children) of us, we hadnt booked but were made to feel very welcome. Nothing was too much trouble, service was very quick and efficient, all the staff were very friendly and the whole place seemed to work like clockwork. We stopped here on our bike ride from Maryport as we heard it had good vegan offerings. This is absolutely right, a separate menu with wide choices, options on the specials board and three vegan cakes! The breakfast was out of this world, everything piping hot, large piece of Cumberland sausage, alongside bacon, mushrooms, black pud, beans, tomato, toast, we were full to the brim and well worth a try you will not be disappointed! Also little Doggy treat for our pooch was a nice touch and we bought a door stop of a little fox as a momento of our visit too from the little gift shop as so lovely, Covid attention to detail to make us all feel safe was appreciated too!

A friend and I were cycling from Carlisle round the coast to Maryport. By the time we got to Allonby we were ready for tea and cake, and we spotted this place. It doesn't look much from the outside but the cakes were to die for (especially the blueberry and lemon), the tea was served in 'proper' china cups and saucers with a lovely old-fashioned teapot, and the service was not only friendly but also helpful, filling us in with detail about coastal bike route and where it might be too stony for our racing bikes and where it was tarmac. It was also spotlessly clean inside. I would definitely visit again if I was passing through.

This is a really unexpected gem in Allonby, tucked out of the way and serving really interesting meals, not run of the mill, pie and chips or sausage, egg and chips, though if you order them you can get them. But the cook also makes interesting food too, today I had a Tagliatelle with Garlic Prawn and Black Olives and my wife had what sh classed as very good Chicken , Leek and Sweet Potato in a Filo pastry pie.My Tagliatelle was OK but would have been better with a few more Prawns and a few less Olives (cut in half) but it was obvious that some thought and effort had gone into the dish, so full marks for effort.Of course we'll return, we live quite close and it's a good place for a relaxed and not too expensive meal.

Please, dear reader, DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE!Stop at this tearoom - they serve, possibly, the best carrot cake in the world (certainly the best I have eaten in my years of carrot cake eating). The owners are lovely and demonstrate a hospitality that you will only find in the North of England. If you have bad service/food here then I do not know how you set your standards.Go there! Now!

From the outside this tea room doesn't look much, but once inside it is lovely in the way only an independent shop can be! Tea comes in quirky tea pots had scone and tea cake with jam both went down a treat. Excellent clean and tidy baby changing area. Staff friendly, helpful and polite.

Dropped by the tearoom for brunch. I had cheesy beans on toast and my wife had scrambled egg and salmon on toast. Simple fare but both were excellent and generous portions. The plates were very hot (good) and I commented to Brenda that this was very welcome, not everywhere heats the plates and the food cools quickly - not at the Allonby Tearoom. The whole place has a buzz of activity and friendliness.

We popped in here on a cold Saturday morning for breakfast. The cafe has a warm and friendly atmosphere with comfy fireside couches and several tables. It is visited by locals who are very welcoming. The owners are friendly and there is service at your table. My husband had a huge full english breakfast with toast and a mug of milky coffee. I had a smaller vegetarian breakfast . Hubby reported that the sausage and bacon were of excellent quality. We have previously visited for coffee and cake which was delicious. In addition to the menu there is a specials board. I look forwardcto trying some of the veggie dishes. The cafe displays and sells local crafts and well behaved dogs are welcome too. A little gem. We will be back.... lots.

Mike and Brenda are always very welcoming at the Allonby Tearoom and Giftshop. Really tasty cafe food, good menu , either for lunch or tea, and the full tea is really excellent - and extremely hard to finish. Wonderful baking and a great atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended.

Popped in on Christmas Eve. The wind was howling but the welcome inside was warm. We all had baguettes - 2 puller pork and one festive Brie and cranberry. All 10/10. Took some homemade cakes home to have later. All were yum. Highly recommend

Delicious food in a lovely spot after a walk in the beach. The chickpea, red onion, bulger wheat & feta cheese was lovely, top with scrumptious coffee & walnut cake.

We popped in here for late lunch on Sunday in August. It is a traditional little tearoom with a gift shop attached. Our first choice of food had sold out so we both went for the pulled pork baguette instead. It was huge! It was nice but got a bit sickly after a while because there was so much of it. It was nice to sit in the window and watch the world go by. Will probabily come back for lunch one day when next in Allonby.

Such a lovely warm welcome from Ian, the server. He was so attentive throughout our time there. It is a limited menu but everything we had and we went twice in three days in Keswick, tasted great. There was three types of soup to choose from which came with different accompaniments, ie, sourdough toast, spicy chickpea bun ect. There was also a choice of about five different types of cake and I can highly recommend the ginger and raspberry with extra fruit compote. Note it's cash only and closed Sunday and Monday. Soon as we go back to Keswick we are going back to Chintys.

Precis: Wow! Excellent! Any other superlative you choose! Full review: What a wonderful gem of a find! From the start the welcome was warm and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for Gary, Donna and their team; what a diamond they have found in Jack! The quality of the furnishings is very high, the fittings top class and the home made biscuits in the bedroom were delicious! Even a welcome decanter of sherry to start off your stay! The hallway walls are adorned with award plaques from numerous organisations! The grounds were extensive and very well kept. We had read about the wild red squirrels and hoped we may get to spot one - no fears there; we watched them running around the garden and feeder each day! Now for the food! Absolutely excellent! Each evening started at 7pm with canapés and good conversation with fellow guests, most of whom seem to be repeat visitors, with good reason! Gary is very personable and quite the bon viveur, his knowledge of wine is excellent, after all by his own admission he has been in the game for a good number of years! The four course dinner menu is set, no choices, but the menu is on display each morning and I'm sure that alternatives could be organised if enough notice were given. Each course was exquisite, served piping hot (where appropriate!) and presented beautifully, as was the table in general. Service was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. Breakfast was just as good! Hazel Bank has seven rooms and the restaurant is open only to residents. All this means that each guest gets very personal, and personable, service from start to finish! If you think that this review is a little enthusiastic then I doubt you've visited! Don't get me wrong, it isn't for everybody and nowhere is totally perfect, but Hazel Bank gets VERY close!
