Alfie's Authentic English Fish & Chips in Southend-on-Sea

My husband has been after the perfect chip locally for what seems like an eternity - he has now found it! Amazing chips, very chunky, cooked to perfection on the outside and in, crunchy on the bite and soft inside. Very friendly, thanks Alfie!! Will return.

We were visiting Southend on the Paddle Steamer 'Waverley' in a small group of x 12. At first we thought the venue was full, but "Alfies' soon managed to accommodate our party outside by moving tables/chairs. The food was worth waiting for .. freshly cooked and the best Chips I've tasted in a long while! Be warned that a lot of the other Cafe's nearby were closed on a weekday. Well done 'Alfies'!

I came here yesterday for lunch with my daughter's and the chips were amazing. My only criticism would be my ham, egg and chips. When it was served up it was a couple of wafer thin slices of ham. Would go again but wouldn't order that off the menu again.

A family run business with a wealth of customer service. The staff are friendly and attentive & very welcoming. The fish (Haddock & Cod) was cooked to perfection and the Chips were chunky & moist. I would happily recommend Alfie's to anyone visiting Southend on Sea. The restaurant is nicely located beneath the Pier.

The fish was beautiful. The chips however, left a lot to be desired. To paint the picture, Alfies advertises itself as a "traditional fish and chip shop". As such, I expected freshly cut chips, fried just past their oil saturation point where they where tender, but edging towards crispiness. I expected to salivate in anticipation and imagined sprinkling my chips with salt and vinegar, each bite throwing me back to my childhood with long days spent by the seaside building up ones appetite for such simple culinary delights. What I got instead: Upon ordering from the counter, I observed frozen chips being taken out the packet to add them to the fryer. Keeping an open mind, I thought maybe they would still be nice. I didnt expect them to be so overcooked though and so devoid of any flavour or traditionality. It was like eating fried cardboard, with all the associated flavour that comes from something...well flavourless. One of my main gripes is that making chips is one of the cheapest things a restaurant can do. Hence the expression "cheap as chips". Alfies, sort it out. You have a wonderful location, fresh salad, amazing fish. But your chips are dire. Its a quintisential British tradition to come to the seaside and eat fresh chips from a chippy. Your chips didnt satisfy this craving unfortunately. With chip shops in Southend being a dime a dozen, you really need to get the basics right. Get this sorted and you'll be onto a winner. As things stand, it strikes the customer as you can't quite be bothered. Such a pity!

We ate here today. The children had chicken nuggets, chips and beans (£5 each) and my husband had the haddock and chips (£12.90). Portions were a good size, chips were delicious and we were all very happy. Waitress was attentive and friendly.

The most disgusting chips ever! They are the most humongous reformed chips and just so dry! When I asked for my money back after seeing The persons in front arrive - Their defence was all the chips along the front of the same and although they had not started my order refused to give me my money back. This might be truthful this song parade next to them but just a little bit along was proper chip shop chips. For the money I paid it was not worth it I wish I waited until I got home! Please avoid or walk further along for a decent shop.

Ok so we popped in while in Southend today for lunch. Firstly the fish and the burger were lovely however the same can’t be said for the chips. They are frozen chips and taste awful, dry and tasteless. This is not what you expect from a place that calls it’s self a fish & chip shop. Drinks were good and staff friendly enough but I wouldn’t return due to the horrible chips.

From the minute we sat down, the waitresses and their manager were bickering which made the entire experience uncomfortable. When our food arrived it tasted fresh from the freezer. Would not come back here

So disappointed. Call themselves a traditional seafront restaurant and the chips are frozen chips from the freezer section in the supermarket! AVOID AND GO TO A PLACE THAT SELLS HAND CUT CHIPS!

Fish excellent, chips fresh and hand cut, service top notch and friendly. Can't fault, certainly enhanced by a beautiful day. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.

Busy little chip shop. Eat in or takeaway. Good prices for the seafront. Chips the best I’ve ever had. Friendly attentive staff. It can be hard to chose a fish and chips shop when there are sooo many. This one was busier than the rest which is always a good sign- it didn’t disappoint. No loos, but the pier ones are literally opposite.

An unplanned visit for a family of 4 we dined inside and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Freshly cooked, non-greasy, presented great and the price was exceptionally reasonable. Definitely visit again.

2nd visit here & just as good as the 1st. I still rate this as serving the best chips in Southend add to that lovely tasting fish & a great location & it makes this a place not to miss

Went as a family, the cod and chips were great, freshly cooked as well as my sons hotdog. My oh wasn’t impressed with his small portion of calamari but on the whole a wholesome lunch in a clean setting. Waitresses very nice and professional.

I would just like to say what a lovely gentleman alfie is, he made us feel so welcome, the fish was amazing and fresh. The place is very small. The waitress was very nice to.oh and the latte i had was beautiful. If you are along south end beach, and hungry go visit alfies. There are so many fish bars along the promenade. I would only eat in alfies, they are open unti 11pm.

We stopped off here for dinner after spending all day in Adventure Island - 3 adults, 5 kids - and the food was really good. Big portions and the fish was fresh and really tasty. Service was amazing - I think it’s a family run business - with each and everyone person that served us being super friendly, helpful and really accommodating with the kids. The food came really quickly and when we ordered extra drinks they were with us in a few minutes. Would definitely recommend :)

When I saw the location, right under Southend pier, I expected the food to be expensive & tasteless how wrong I was, tasty fresh fish &, what my partner said, were the best chips she’s ever tasted & the prices were very reasonable also a great location to really get the “seaside experience.”

Had an amazing experience here with my fiancé. He had a delicious fish and chips meal and I had a sumptuous hot dog meal at a very decent price especially after being right near the beach and the entrance of Adventure Island! The staff were super friendly and always ensured we were ok and enjoying the food! Would definitely recommend visiting Alfie’s Fish and Chips if you are on your way to Southend! First of all there are many fish and chip shops in south end but this is the BEST one I have been to, the staff and so friendly and helpful,always had a smile on their faces, the shop was so clean which is obviously so important but rare, and the food was so good, the fish was so fresh as was everything else, I got a chance to meet one of the owners and she is the loveliest woman, you can tell that her passion is in this business I will always return and will tell everybody I know, makes me want to return sooner than expected 10/10

First and last visit to this restaurant, £9.80 for Haddock & Chips, I love my Haddock but this was no way Haddock ! I’ve heard of many restaurants passing off another fish as Haddock and I think this was one of them. I was very tempted to save a portion and take to have it analysed. Young waitress was very friendly, I still left a £1 tip, it isn’t the staffs fault.

Small, clean restaurant with friendly, helpful staff. Food is tasty and served quickly. The best in this small arcade of restaurants right next to the pier.

From the second we walked up there was a warm friendly welcome, food was cooked fresh, hot and delicious. The chips are some of the best I’ve eaten. We ordered large cod and chips, kids fish and chips, scampi with chips and mushy peas plus 4 drinks. We were given a spare plate for the toddler, mini cutlery and there was no fuss over us sharing our food. This place is a little gem and we will definitely be returning.

We visit Southend now and again and normally just drive by these small cafes/restaurants but today we decided to walk down to see what was available. We were approached by a lovely gentlemen outside this place who invited us in and made a special fuss of my mum who is 90 and in a wheelchair. He made room for her without any bother and was very chatting and friendly towards us which made us feel welcomed and valued as a customer. Our food was absolutely lovely and freshly cooked and served hot. All 3 of us were very pleased with our choices and would not hesitate to go back there next time we are in Southend.

First time visiting South End with the family and overall had a fabulous weekend, however, we were bombarded by the endless chains of fish and chip shops, how were we to choose? Well we were practically whisked off the street by a rather over zealous character from Alfies who promised us we would be having the best fish and chips and that we would even return for more!

After spending a terrific day in Southend giving an Australian pal a traditional English day out at the seaside we fancied fish and chips. We walked along the various cafes and saw Alfie's by the end of the parade. We went in and it was so clean; the cooking and prep area were immaculate. We asked if the chips were made from fresh potatoes and the lovely lady who served us showed us the freshly cut potatoes and also showed us the fresh fish. The fish and chips were delicious, not greasy and I would happily get the train from London to Southend-on-Sea just to eat them again. The service was excellent too.

I picked this restaurant because it seemed to have the broadest menu and the nicest tables and seats.

Service really bad was kept waiting for 45 minuets for food.then two of our meals were given to the wrong table and was made to wait longer...then the manager was very rude to us when we told them that we were unhappy with the service would tell people to avoid this place!

After walking along Southend seafront checking out a nice place to have some fish and chips we chose Alfie's fish and chip restaurant which looked very friendly and inviting it seemed to be run a young couple with the young man cooking and the young girl as waitress she was very polite and attentive with what we wanted I had plaice and chips with mushy peas the plaice was massive my wife had the same and the fish and chips were well cooked and very tasty, the rest of our party had Rock and chips and a large cod and chips the portions filled us up and was cooked perfect and very tasty and well presented with a side salad as well we will visit again

Called here as we really fancied some good old fashioned chips. We passed several others to go to this one. It was about as far removed from authentic as possible. The chips were FROZEN and not only that, they were burnt. Never again.

Hard to choose which cafe, but chose this one. A sound choice. Good value fish and chips. Lovely mugs of tea. Interesting old photos of Marine Parade. Handy for pier and train.

We popped in for a quick bite to eat during a recent visit to the nearby Adventure Island. The food was freshly cooked and excellent value. The service was very good too - polite, friendly and accommodating. There are many fish & chip restaurants in the vicinity but i'd have no hesitation in recommending Alfie's and we will definitely return when next in Southend. Thanks for a fab lunch!!

We went for a family day out to Southend and decided to have fish and chips so stopped here and sat outside. The food was amazing altho my husbands fish had 3 bones in it but mine was fine so I was happy!!! The waitress was lovely and could not do enough for us and even gave my daughter a lollypop.All in all a lovely meal and would defiantly return here again!!!

3 generations of us in there for lunch on a cold and blustery Bank Holiday Friday afternoon. We've been here before on our last visit to Sarfend a couple of years ago and remembered how good a deal we'd had. Suffice to say that time has not spoilt it and it thankfully remained as good, would recommend the fish and chips, freshly cooked and at a fair price.A little diamond and deserves a higher profile, not yet the new Harry Ramsdens but close.

We had lunch here after a bracing walk on the pier. Service was great, restaurant was very clean and the food was fantastic. Very fresh cod in really crispy batter with lively crunchy chips. Definitely recommended!

My husband and I had sailed into Southend on the Waverley Paddle Steamer (an absolute must-do experience). We had no idea where to eat and looked over the pier at the various cafes serving fish and chips. Alfie's looked the most appetising and we were not disappointed. The batter was light and crisp and the fish firm and fresh. It was all cooked to order so just a short wait ensured fish and chip perfection! We will return!

As some of you may know Southend has a rather large parade of restaurants. We chose this one completely at random and I am ever so glad we did. I was with my partner and son and it was a perfect family environment. We where in fact the only people there. The service was impeccable! The service was quick! And my partners fish was 'the best fish he had ever had' I tried a piece and it was perfect! Meaty and white and perfect! They also had no problem with my son eating his packed lunch that we had brought him.

Three of us went in.took 5 minutes to be even noticed.no toilets.we were coaxed in by a waitress saying all our food is fresh except scampi.so we gave it a try.two ordered fish cakes and a child's meal. out came the "meal" the fish cakes had been put on the plate uncooked and still frozen. So not only were they not fresh but not cooked or even attempted to how could this even happen.serious health and safety issues not even temperature testing. How could uncooked food be sent out Told waitress who looked at us clueless so we left.walked by later to be glared at by staff.what a disgusting place. Do not go there. It's not fresh and not cooked

Stopped here for a quick meal. The food wasn't bad but didn't like the fact that we were overcharged by 20%. We spent a considerable amount of time sorting out the bill. Would eat here again but will keep a close eye on the bill.

Great food, great service. A new business with a passion for good English food. Grabbed a bag of chips and off down the pier we went. Marvellous!

This time. Been stopping off occasionally along the sea front cafes,for a quick nibble. Not the greatest bacon sandwich ive ever had,that title is still held by Dino's at the arches. But competition is fierce along this section of seafront,and the owner has thought young waitresses are the key here. Will try the fish n chips next time.

No complaints here. Had cod and chips while my friend got the breakfast. The cod was well cooked and the chips were tasty. Overall happy.

We stopped here for a take away. The fish was delicious, fresh and local and the chips equally tasty. The owners were very friendly, oblieging and hard-working. My only note would be that the fish is cooked freshly so factor in a little more waiting time than your average take away and prices were a little higher (around £7 for a large fish and tray of chips) than we're used to paying for a take away at home in the midlands but I imagine this is fairly similar to most of the surrounding venues. All in all a lovely restaurant.

This is a very small place, all food cooked to order. Great serving size, fast and very friendly service. Only negative frozen chips rather than hand cut but the fish was excellent and the light crisp batter made up for the chips.

We'd only just arrived after a long journey to wanted something quick that we could grab and walk with down the pier.For £2 we got a big tray of chips freshly cooked in front of us and the owners (I assume) were very friendly and gave advice for the day's activities.The chips were nice, certainly the best I've eaten at the seaside.The place is located directly under the bridge that leads to the Royal Shopping Centre from the pier, and is opposite the Adventure Island.Date of visit: 2nd November (approx. 11am)

Best Fish and Chips I have ever had, I had Haddock and Chips very Large Fish, £7.95 and the Chips were awesome too, it's locally sourced too, I went with My Wife and Son My Wife had Apple Crumble and Vanilla Ice Cream, and by Son Had Ham, Beans and Chips and 3 Drinks for £18, give it a go, I know everyone is raving the Fisherman Wharf, but Alfie's is way cheaper and fresh, you can't beat that!!! It's right opposite the pier next door to the Seafood Cafe.
