Evening meal for two pensioners with drinks cost £25.. The hadock and chips was great and the ice cream dessert was the best I have tasted in a long time.

I had the large cod and chips which was excellent and very reasonably priced. The staff were all friendly and very hard working as it was bank holiday monday but they did a great job of keeping the place clean and tidy and getting the que of customers seated as soon as there was a table free. Well done everyone , you are a credit to Whitby.

I now know why there wasn’t a queue outside on the busiest day of the year! Should have heard the alarm bells, food was absolutely dismal, 4 cod & chips just tasted of oil, it was dripping in it. I wished I had read trip advisor before wasting my money. Keep walking by!

Greasy and tasteless fish and chips which we had in the restaurant. We think some sort of a scam is going on as they only take cash, nothing is rung in the till (which is left open) and no receipts given. I’m sure there are better places than this in Whitby.

With Whitby queues for fish and chips very long at this time of year for takeaway we found this place with just 3 people in the queue!! Order as you go in for ultimate freshness!! Excellent social distancing in place and for one people were adhering to them!! As a family of 4 each having something different we all agreed it was the best fish and chips we ever had!

We went to Alexander's twice during our stay in Whitby. What attracted us was the price - £9.50 for large cod and chips, with bread and butter and tea/coffee. For an extra £1 you can add mushy peas/curry sauce/gravy/beans. We did just that - I had curry sauce and my partner had mushy peas. On both occasions it wasn't very busy when we went in, but it soon started filling up. We noticed all the staff were young, including those cooking the food, but they were pleasant and professional, and enforcing the COVID-19 rules by reminding people they must wear their face covering when not at their table. Orders were taken quickly and our teas, bread and butter, and condiments soon arrived. Not long after so did the fish and chips. The large portion was exactly that, large, and there were plenty of chips. On both visits we cleared our plates and although it may be a restaurant that is cheap and cheerful compared to some places in Whitby, we would happily eat here again if we're ever in the area.

How do you mess up fish and chips in a town where is famous is beyond me, me and the missus both ordered fish chips and peas with a coffee, the first sign was that the coffee was disgusting I'd say it tastes like watered down nats piss but that would be an insult to the Nat. Then the food came and don't ask me how but they somehow managed to prepare two full meals and forgot to add flavour. Everything was just bland and flavourless, the mushy peas where watery and had no flavour the fish had a nice crispy batter but once again no flavour and so where the chips. I had to bathe the whole thing in vinigar just to taste something, but not wanting to completely slate the place I must admit that the bread and butter was lovely.

Called in February 2020 it was a fish restaurant we call to about once a year this time we were very disappointed the haddock and chips were served on a plate and in no time at all the plate and food were swimming in grease, the bread and butter was pastey and the tea was lukewarm. At the end of the meal I went to the loo and was met with a strong smell of urine and dirty toilet. They will have to improve they standards before I increase the amount of stars I give.

Traditionally cooked Fish and chips with Tea or Coffee and bread and Butter at a good price, with friendly, efficient service in a bright and cheerful restaurant. You order at the counter, but everything is brought to your table on either the small upper level near the entrance, or in the larger lower level. It is tucked away at the top of a steep slope, and access would not be easy for any wheelchair user I should think, but the effort would be well worth it. As everyone knows, you are spoilt for choice with fish and chips in Whitby. We stumbled on this place and managed to get the last table which we thought was a good sign (this was Sunday lunchtime). It quite tight inside and when queuing at the till, you were in the way of passing traffic and it did seem a little slow when people were placing their orders. Had quite a wait for our meals to come, maybe it was the lunch time rush, but the restaurant did seem under staffed, the lady at the till also in charge of clearing tables which didn’t really work. No complaints about the meals, the fish was nicely cooked, nice chips and mushy peas. All good value for the price. Will definitely go back, maybe not when the place is full though.

Have not been in this place for years and at the time their fish and chips were lovely. However, this time all l can say is how disappointed l was. The fish was fresh but as for anything else l was not happy with. Firstly the crockery could do with a good wash eg, their dishwashers not doing it's job and needs a clean. Secondly the fish and chips came swimming in beef dripping. Thirdly the staff looked like they were under endurance, and not one of them had hair protection. The seating arrangement left a lot to be desired, the tables were bolted to the floor and could not be moved making it extremely difficult for a family to sit comfortably and have room to move. It might be the cheapest in town but l would not recommend it.

First portion of fish and chips in Whitby. We got in just before closing at 1800. After that they were turning customers away as they had decided to close. It didn't take long for the food to arrive and the price was good. Portion size for the kids cod was massive. My large cod was nice and fresh, as it had been cooked to order due to them closing. Chips were a little sparse on the larger portions. The only slight niggle was the amount of oil on my plate from the fish, the kids portions were the same. Obviously the fish had come straight out of the fryer and on to the plate. I appreciate it's deep fried. All in all not bad. Would I go again? hmm not sure there is plenty of choice for fish and chips in Whitby, so possibly not.

We went in just after 11.30 am as we had had an early breakfast. The staff were stood around (three of them) and seemed surprised to see us . I asked if they were open and they said they were. My wife has mobility issues and uses a four wheel support. She went and ordered food and drink and was handed a tray with the drinks on I was surprised, as none of them seemed to be doing anything, that they did not help her with the tray so I went and got it from her. Then the food came hot and freshly cooked . We were the only customers in and seated quite near the entrance door . A delivery man came in carrying two sacks of potatoes on his shoulder and could only just fit through the one door that was open (the other being locked closed) . No one went to open the door for him even though he came back in about eight times he had to struggle each time. I felt very sorry for him holding the door open would have made his job easier and indeed safer. I did not feel it was my place to leave my food to go cold when there were three staff doing nothing but having a long conversation about swapping shifts as one of them wanted to be off on Thursday as it was her birthday . Made us feel most uneasy for the poor guy and we did not enjoy our visit much even though the food was good.

We have been to Whitby many times over the years and we know the score with queing outside the doors at cafes and chip shops. Like many other reviews on here we should have known better about going in this chip shop. The so called tables for 4 people should have been for 4 children, cramped was not the word. The staff were awful, the chip shop was dirty, the ladies toilets were next to the rubbish bins and stunk to high heaven, having used the ladies toilets, the big window was slightly open and there were a few people who worked there standing just outside the window good job it had frosted glass! My husband used the gents toilets, he said there was no urinal and the toilet itself was on about 6inch high boards. The food........the chips were soggy and running in fat, the fish batter was quite nice, the fish itself looked nice but it was tasteless and running in a pool of fat, the peas were tasteless, the bread tasted stale with margarine on it, the coffee was luke warm, the tea was drinkable, we ate a little of these meals as we hadn't eaten that day if we had eaten breakfast all 3 meals would have gone back.Anyone who writes a good report about this chip shop must be related to the owners, it was diabolical! Next time we go to Whitby we will get in the queue at a reputable chip shop.

Came here whilst visiting Whitby for the day, after trying numerous places to eat that were all really busy ,we ended up eating here. The adults ordered fish and chips and our children had scampi and chips. You find a table then go to the counter order your food and then you are given a number, then wait for your number to be shouted!!!! The chips were very dry and the fish was very greasy, our son pointed out his celery was very dirty, the place seemed very busy and chaotic, admittedly it was a very busy day in Whitby. Not a very pleasant experience and will definitely not be going back.

We entered these premises on 17 August 2017 and on placing an order was so put off by the unacceptable rudeness of the young member of staff that we left. Never to return thank you very much.

Visited this for the second time today and it was just as I remembered. Tucked away in a little corner just round from the Natwest bankthis is a beautiful NOT overpriced restaraunt. Medium Fish (Cod or Haddock) Chips Bread/Butter with Tea or Coffee £6.50 TO EAT IN not like others charging £10.50, you could even get Peas for just 50p extra. The staff are organised and the service is very quick with the food Piping Hot and fresh

Looking for somewhere for fish and chips on a Saturday lunchtime. We got the last table for two at Alexanders. Food very good. Very reasonably priced. Meals included bread and butter and tea or coffee. Obviously a popular place because as soon as people got up to leave more people were sitting down. Would definitely go again

Great haddock/cod and chips with pot of tea and bread and butter for about £6-8. Nice and busy atmosphere but got a table no problem. Warning for vegetarians....sign above the counter says "sorry we cook in beef dripping"!

Fish and Chips was nice but would not say top class for Whitby, there was a slight twang to the fish and don't know if that was old cooking oil used or the oil used, would go back again as value for money including a cup of tea and a slice of bread

Decently priced especially compared with some of the other fish restaurants. Huge piece of cod. Very nice indeed. Glad we found it.

We ate here whilst on our mini trip around Yorkshire, The fish and chips were nice and didn't take long from taking our order to it arriving. The pot of coffee that came with it was dreadful and we left them. There didn't appear to be any alternatives other than pop/water out of a bottle/can. The mushy peas came in a dish for the three of us to share - strange. On the whole though not bad but not good.

We've been coming here for 30 years, you get some of the best fish and chips in Whitby here, and look at the stiff competition. The chips are old fashioned ie excellent, tastes like beef fat oil, yum, and the ultra fresh fish is fried to perfection. You get tea and bread and butter with your order whether you like it or not and it's so cheap! Extraordinary value. Yes it's a basic café but the product is above average. Take away service too. If only they were open in the evenings, pretty please.

A wet day so not being able to sit out looked for a place we could sit in and came across this place. Sadly cod was off the menu so we settled for Haddock. It came hot and tasty. Reasonable price.

As a scot now living in Scandinavia I was on holiday with my wife in England for the first time in 14 years. I felt I had been transported back in time to the fifties and sixties when loads of restaurants were like this. We ordered fish and chips and were handed cod the size of a small whale with lots of chips. For me the icing on the cake was a mug of good strong tea and a plate of bread and butter.Great food and service and although the prices were not nineteen sixties they were very reasonable.

Called in for fish and chips to share - £10. Opened the box to find the fish in three pieces. Rancid oil taste to both fish and hard chips. Truly the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten.

This is a handy place to eat when visiting Whitby Abbey especially after climbing up the steps. Decent number of tables inside and out. It can get busy and likely there may be a queue. It is part of the Youth Hostel and serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, cakes as well as larger meal options. We all had paninis which were nice enough and the side order of chips were nice. Nothing spectacular but it filled a gap well and with nice views.

Use this pub regularly drinks at good price food reasonable for this type of pub. Comfortable surroundings, not the best weatherspoons compared to many others. Come here regularly could do with more staff.

The cat's pyjamas? Dog's dinner more like. After initially nearly leaving due to the horrible atmosphere we settled and ordered a breakfast and avocado and halloumi on toast with two coffees. Our drinks arrived quickly but the food mustve taken about 45 minutes to come, with no acknowledgement of the long wait. It wasnt particularly busy. When the food arrived it was awful. The breakfast was greasy and badly cooked and I couldnt finish it. The avocado and halloumi on toast was literally a few slices of avocado and overcooked halloumi, on the side of some burnt toast. Dont bother, there are far nicer places in Scarborough.

For a large pub and the fact it was late on in the day on a Saturday, it was very clean and the staff were very polite. Food was good and nice selection of beer.
