Albert's Eatery, Wesley Hall in Scarborough

Albert’s became a family favourite after our last visit in 2021 - a fantastic location offering a wonderful choice of seafood, served professionally and with a touch of sophistication. In 2023 we had family from USA and Australia visiting, so on a trip to Whitby we booked Albert’s as a way of showcasing the ‘Best of British’ - unfortunately in the intervening period, the standard has dropped significantly. Menu choices were limited (the seafood platters we were expecting weren’t available) and whilst the service was friendly, it felt overall like we were eating at a slightly upmarket cafe - such a waste of the wonderful location. Hopefully the people running Albert’s can recruit well and get the kitchen back to where it used to be, and a bit of training for front of house to bring back the special feel that it we experienced on our earlier visit.

We usually eat here in the evening but unfortunately they do not seem to open in the evenings at the moment so went here for lunch instead. The food is still outstanding but the level of service has dropped and does not seem as professional as on previous occasions.

Popped in for something to drink, with the potential of turning that into eating lunch. There were nine of us, but immediately you could see that they were t happy about so many of us taking up their time when not ordering food. Staff were rude and made us feel like serving us was a huge inconvenience. The manager actually sighed her way through taking our order and when we asked for some water as well she told us she didn’t have enough glasses for all of us and seems reluctant to give us any. One member of staff caught the end of my conversation about different types of glasses from place to place and got the wrong end of the stick and basically, and rudely, told me the restaurant was full (another reminder we weren’t welcome) and so they didn’t have any other glasses available. Diet cokes were basically mixer bottles and really expensive. 1) learn about hospitality; friendliness, service etc 2) don’t butt into conversations 3) learn how to wash up or stock more glasses 4) get Coke or something on draft and charge a better price for it as there’s no value for money at the moment

Lovely ambiance and food, dog friendly too. We ate quite late, but had a lovely meal and didn’t feel rushed at all, despite being the last people there. Would highly recommend here and we’ll definitely be back in the future. Feels very Victorian and upmarket.

Second visit after a great experience in April. Unfortunately today was disappointing. I don't know if they have new management at Albert's but the food wasn't the same standard and the staff were not as attentive. As someone who works in customer service, I know the number one rule is put your customer first, whatever you're doing behind the bar, however interesting your conversation with your colleagues may be attend to the customer immediately. Then there's the food - the fish was burnt with the batter brown and hollow around a thin, dry slice of white fish. Overcooked! The salad was limp and clearly not fresh. The 'saving grace' - chunky chips weren't great either. We chose not to go to one of the many fish and chip restaurants for the service and ambience offered here but they didn't even have music playing this time! Poor show. Won't be going again!

After reading reviews and seeing YouTube recommendations we booked a table for lunch. We booked a couple of weeks in advance and no one let us know that the place was being renovated and that workmen were working right next to us in the restaurant. The crab bloomer was nice however the chips were terrible. Not sure if they were air fried rather than being fried the traditional way but they were dry and not fully cooked. With so many other places offering similar you can’t afford to serve poor chips.

A lovely lunch in quirky surroundings and a friendly server. Food is more expensive than advertised online which is a bit naughty.

So we booked via online and the menu hosted online is completely different to the one in house. In essence prices were double that advertised online. Another issue was online was a kids menu and once there nothing to cater for the young ones. In conjunction to the vanishing menu service was some of the worse I have witnessed. Staff stood behind the marble bar as if it was the Berlin Wall, in fear if they crossed they would need to do some work. Many other decent places to eat in Whitby now.

Was looking forward to visiting here but very let down. We were greeted by a lovely young lady who got us seated and gave us the menus. Shortly after, a blonde woman came over to take our order. She was very rude and proceeded to snatch the menus off us as she walked off. We got soon got our food and although the meal was ok, the awful service we received from her really tainted our experience. We had planned to stay for dessert but we were put off. Nice building and food but poor service.

I visited this restaurant with my friends and had mixed experiences with the waitresses. One of them, a young woman, was incredibly helpful and attentive throughout our meal. She made sure we had everything we needed and answered all our questions with a smile. She even offered suggestions for dishes that we might like based on our preferences. Her service really made our dining experience enjoyable. However, the other, bit older waitress that served us was quite cold and distant. She seemed annoyed when we asked her questions about the menu, and made us feel like we were being a bother. Her service was not up to par with what we expected from this establishment, and it really detracted from our overall experience. Overall, while the food was good, our experience was dampened by the poor service of one of the waitresses. I would recommend the restaurant, but suggest that they work on improving the customer service provided by all staff members

Had a wonderful visit to Alberts on Whitby goth weekend. Spoke to the front of house manager, Lauren, and tried the Whitby Jet cocktail which I really enjoyed! My only criticism would be that some staff seemed to be working harder than others and we could hear the front of house staff chatting loudly in the kitchen which was a little distracting. Food was good, both had the crab sandwiches, definitely recommend.

Fish was fresh but more care to take off the skin would have been nice. The cod butty had no butter on the bread which made it quite dry. Ordered two of the special Whitby Jet cocktails....mine wasn't drinkable but my friends was delicious...strange. Lovely chocolate martini The service let this down....not very warm or welcoming...felt like they couldn't wait to leave and finish. Also....maybe some of the history of the place on the back of menus or on the tables would be a good idea....feel like they're missing a trick there.

Had dinner there Saturday evening. The ambience is lovely but, unfortunately the food let it down. Starters consisted of sea food chowder and a Greek meze.When the starter's arrived my chowder wasn't what I expected, the same with my husband's Greek meze. The chowder was full of mussels still in their shells as was the other shell fish. I had to swop with my husband as I couldn't have eaten it. The Greek meze consisted of green leaves and a bit of feta cheese along with croutons. For the main course my husband chose a vegetarian meal as there was very little variety. I chose belly pork. When it arrived it was awful. It was just fat which hadn 't been cooked properly. I'd expected crackling, the mashed potato was cold as were the greens that tasted of vinegar. Needless to say I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the food for the price. I did complain and they took my meal off the bill. Wouldn't go again.

Friendly welcome for us and our 6 month old Westie puppy. Shared a crab sandwich and whitebait. Great food and great value (would have cost us the same money if we'd paid out to go to Whitby Abbey!). Would highly recommend and will return during our holiday if we have the time. Lovely oasis in the middle of Whitby. Great slideshow of old Whitby on the wall to enjoy whilst you eat. Even a bowl of water supplied for Dexter the dog. A great find.

Firstly I had Scallops which were gritty due to not being rinsed properly prior to cooking, though they were cooked. Then I had Duck which was greasy as it had not been rendered down sufficiently so it wasn't very pleasant to eat.

In a town of pubby fish and chips this is the romantic little eatery you are looking for. Randomly situated in a cute little museum in the old town this is a beautiful location for delicate food. Highly recommended
