Good experience and taste but heaters aren't effective too cold

We have been regular customers at Afghan Grill and have always appreciated the food. However, this was by far the worst experience we’ve had in terms of customer service. The staff member taking orders, who had a darker complexion, was extremely rude and lacked basic manners on how to speak to and serve customers. There have been unpleasant incidents before, but I never felt the need to leave a review—until now. This time, the waiter simply placed the dishes in front of me and my guests, telling us to serve ourselves in the most disrespectful way. When we raised concerns about the food and the lack of heating in the restaurant, his response was shockingly rude — even suggesting we leave if we didn’t like it. For a place that charges fine-dining prices, the experience was worse than a basic shawarma takeaway spot. We will never dine in again, and I’ll be sure to advise my friends to avoid this place as well.

Absolutely terrible experience. The restaurant had no central heating, and it was freezing inside. We informed the manager twice, but he refused to do anything about it. On top of that, the service was pathetic—even the manager didn’t bother serving the food properly. It felt nothing like a proper restaurant experience. Definitely not coming back and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone!

I gave this place another chance after six months, but nothing has improved. The staff’s attitude is just as terrible—rude, unprofessional, and completely lacking in basic customer service. The waiter dumped all the plates on the table and expected us to distribute them ourselves. When bringing the food, he rudely told us to make space instead of doing his job properly. Even told us you to leave. Charging fine dining prices while providing service worse than a budget takeaway is unacceptable. To make things worse, the restaurant was freezing because the heating was off. When we asked for some warmth, we were met with nothing but attitude. The food may be good, but it’s nowhere near good enough to compensate for this pathetic service. Never coming back. The staff needs to be replaced ASAP.

Loved the mango lassi—it was rich, creamy, and refreshing! The Qabili Pilau was also great, with perfectly cooked lamb that was tender and flavorful. The tandoori chicken was tasty but had a bit too much food coloring and a slight achaar(pickle) flavor. The overall experience was good, with friendly service and a cozy atmosphere.

Excellent atmosphere , made me feel like home . Young lad at the front named Idrees provided excellent customer service best I’ve ever experienced . He’s got a bright future ahead of him , made the experience 10 times better . Food was amazing

The traditional afghani cuisine here is very good and i would recommend the food but the space is too small and watch out for the bill as they might get sneaky and add more things which you havent had.

As a Pakistani and a fan of Afghani cuisine, I would love to see more authentic Afghani restaurants open in Newcastle. This is why I genuinely care about this establishment and urge the management to take this feedback seriously. I have been ordering from this restaurant for over a year, but unfortunately, the quality has noticeably declined. During our recent dine-in experience, we ordered the following: Boneless Charsi Karahi: 1/5 We requested it spicy but received a bland and burnt karahi. When we initially considered ordering the Lahori Karahi, the waiter discouraged us, claiming it would taste only of tomatoes. This misunderstanding of Lahori Karahi's essence was disappointing. Mango Lassi Jug: 0/5 This was perhaps the most disappointing item. The lassi was watery and flavorless—a surprising letdown considering how easily this drink is perfected at many Pakistani and Indian restaurants. Chapli Kabab: 1/5 The chapli kababs were unusually thin, resulting in a crispy texture and almost no flavor. Paying £15 for two small, unsatisfying kababs felt like poor value for money. Naans: 4/5 The naans were the highlight of the meal—well-cooked and a good size. However, they lacked the distinctive aroma typical of authentic Afghani naans. Service: 2/5 While the service speed was acceptable, I was disappointed when we requested a no-salt dish for a guest with dietary restrictions, and the waiter refused to even check with the chef, stating all dishes were pre-cooked. I guess they can send the chef home then? Additionally, the billing process seemed unprofessional—the waiter used a pen, paper, and calculator instead of the till. Though the card machine worked, no receipt was provided. When inquiring about firni for dessert, the waiter initially confirmed its availability but later retracted it. Atmosphere: 3/5 The restaurant was only 20% full at 6:15 p.m. on a Saturday night, which was concerning. However, this did provide a peaceful dining experience with light background music. Similar concerns have been echoed in other reviews. I sincerely hope the management addresses these issues promptly to restore the restaurant's quality and reputation.

Great food, the Pulao was plentiful. A single regular plate was enough for two people so it can be cost effective as well. The Bamia was also pretty good. I woukd recommend going during the happy hour as it is cheaper then.

Food was decent. Chicken seemed to have a weird taste but lamb dishes were fine. They do not offer boycott alternatives in their soft drinks menu and we asked if we could bring our own in addition to the water and lassis we have ordered. The waiter said No as the “supervisor” wouldn’t allow. We requested to speak to the supervisor who we were told repeatedly was too busy to come and speak to us…. This actually ruined our meal as the waiter just continued to bring our meal out and the supervisor was so busy that he couldn’t come and speak to paying customers! Even till the end. They didn’t respect us and as a Muslim owned restaurant, it’s truly disgusting that they refuse to accommodate.

Over the years, we've always had hit and miss experiences at this place but decided overall it was worth it. One of the main reasons I go is for the Lahori karahi - if you can't get it right, don't sell it! It's either tasteless, or burnt, or mashed through and through, and then you can't deal with negative feedback? For goodness sake, get some decent staff in that knows how to handle complaints, which you SHOULD welcome if you want to better yourselves! How dare you argue with a customer, especially one that is right. Shame on this restaurant for not compensating customers who feel they've been ripped off in some way or form. A few quid off the meal or some dessert on the house maybe - keep us happy or you lose us! Last but not least, the kind of customers you get there are loud and noisy, no manners and just ignorant. Parents, maybe teach your kids manners, they're like wild animals.

We had the Afghan Mixed grill for 4 persons It was a good choice with variety on a platter. Tasty food as expected with Afghan cuisine. We had more than enough leftovers to take away home.

Amazing Qabili Pilau. The lamb shank is juicy and off the bone tender. Amazing flavours and very good portion size.

Food here is great I'd reccomend it, had the platter meal and has a bit of everything and it's all good. The atmosphere is ok. The service is great too, definitely would reccomend this place.

Staff behaviour is not good throughout food. They told lies without any reason. Highly incompetent and incorporating behaviour. They told lies and not recommended at all.

Prices on the Menu are different compared to to what they charged.Ordered kabuli pulao which is always comes with Shank but they charged £2 extra for Shank. Would not recommend.

Kabuli Palau was very delicious and Momos as well

One of the best Chapli kebabs you'll find anywhere. Tandoori wrap is also nice so is the biryani and kabuli pulao.

Afghani Pulao And Chicken Kadhai Both Are Good.

Had an absolutely wonderful experience there last night. We were three adults and 1 child. We travelled from carlisle and reached there about 9.25pm. We were literally the only family there but the staff was soo welcoming. Big smiles and ready to help. We ordered kabuli pulao and afghani platter for one and naan (Were hungry so couldnt take photos) Everything was top notch. Meat was super tender, the rice well cooked and veryy tasty. The complimentary daal with pulao was such a good binding factor with the kebabs. They gave butter with the platter that we put on the naan (sooo yum) We are so full but when the guy asked for desserts, we decided to get firni/kheer. It was very tasty and felt homecooked. Had to get one more to go 😂 Were economical yet absolutely wonderful. Will be coming back.

Terrible service, delivery late and not within timeframe given, as usual. It’s a real shame as the service does not reflect the quality of the food and it really lets it down.

Today I had a terrible experience at this restaurant. From the moment we arrived, the service was nothing short of appalling. Despite it only being 9:30 PM, the waiter kept rushing us to order, saying they closed at 10:30 PM, which made the entire dining experience stressful. When the food arrived, it was even more disappointing. We ordered a 1kg and 0.5kg karahi, but both portions were the same. When we questioned the waiter, he insisted they were different and refused to answer any further questions. He claimed he would check with the chef but never returned with an answer. To make matters worse, after placing our order, they informed us they didn’t have raita, despite it being on the menu and part of our meal. The final blow was when they refused to accept card payments, saying their machine was broken – something that seems to happen frequently. It’s suspicious and feels like something they do to avoid taxes. I was asked to transfer money to a personal account instead, which felt very unprofessional and shady. To top it all off, instead of giving us a proper printed receipt, they handed us a handwritten one. This restaurant deserves to be reported to the authorities for such poor service and dubious practices, and I fully intend to make an official complaint.

Absolute delicious meals!! Will visit again whenever in Newcastle

Ordered to takeaway after a friend recommended we try. So glad we ordered. The staff were friendly and offered me a drink while we waited for the food to be prepared. The food was amazing so much flavour and fresh.Portion sizes were good too. Will definitely be ordering again.

I had the opportunity of trying Afghan Grill in Newcastle. I was visiting from London and this place was a class in Afghan cuisine. Loved the food. The staff was very friendly. Really loved the lamb Karhai and the dessert feerni was super delicious

How can you guys did like no any respect any responsibility, i really can’t understand it ! We come to this city for trip and you guys just made it like Xxxx , we ordered from there and couldn’t rich the food but also paid for 22 £ , even after they cancelled the order and no delivery and no return too !

Read the comments and don’t be like me. The food is not that bad but the portion size are crazy small. They charge too much to give this little food, 15 pounds for lamb chops the size of wings. The only thing they liberally serve is the rice but for the price it’s definitely not worth it. 17.5 for only that

A family go-to favourite whilst I was a student in Newcastle. I've had Afghan food in other parts of the country but these guys do it best! Always welcoming and the food is top tier. Recommend the fish pakora and the kabuli pulao, the latter was always a must get when my family would visit. Went yesterday after my graduation and Afghan Grill House is one of the many things I'll miss about the toon. Cheers guys

This has to be one of our favourite places to go for Afgan food, there's a bit of a fusion with some Indian style cuisine on the menu too, the portions are MASSIVE and the food is absolutely banging! Everything is clean, tidy and well presented. Definitely somewhere to go if you're looking for something different that won't break the bank!

Pros - chips, garlic sauce, naan bread and the homemade chilli sauce were all great. Cons - milkshake contained no ice cream so was slightly warm and disappointing. The glass it was in was chipped at the rim. The seats are all ready for the tip as they're an absolute state with ripped leather everywhere. We were seated right next to a disabled toilet when the restaurant was almost entirely empty. We also had to go to the front to request service to order and then again to pay because staff were stood about talking. Wasn't too keen on the mixed grill platter but it was edible. Wouldnt return I'm afraid

Edit 09/03/24: We go there biweekly and they've never disappointed us. My go-to food is biryani, no doubt. We tried curry as well; it’s very different from Indian curry but very rich and flavorful. I would easily and definitely say this is the best restaurant in Newcastle. 20/12/23 We had kabuli pilau, lamb biryani and peshwari chana dal and they all tasted absolutely amazing. Rich, full of complex flavors and spice. I’m glad we went there with a good appetite, the portions were really generous. The staff members were lovely too. We’ll definitely try mantos next time.

Order lamb shank with rice paid 17 and got only a tiny piece of lamb. This is ridiculous. Not ordering again.

Just wastage of money Highly highly highly not recommended I went last week with my family and we ordered chicken karahi and biryani, chicken karahi was not karahi and this was 3rd time same issue meat wasn’t cooked properly and that was taste less staff said they will make the new one but same issue no taste they need to tran the chief, Biryani was good

The food is amazing. One of the staff members has been questionable on a few basis, Indian fella who doesn't understand customers needs and is very pushy. Everytime I've been he is very smiley but maybe needs more training in service. Prefer to deal with the young men who I think are relatives of the owner. Atmosphere is OK but a gem for food - highly recommend their kabli piloau and lamb karahi boneless charsi style.

Tasty food at reasonable price!

Its overpriced, they sell sheep meat as lamb meat which had strong distinctive smell. One big turn off was that the BBQ food was actually prepared in an Air Fryer and was not well cooked. Extremely disappointed.

Brother your standard are dropping a little bit o still give you 4 stars but charging high price for a 2 litre bottle of coke is more than 10 litres of diesel. Please stick to things you know and improve. I will come back and try food again to see improvement and will change my review.

We use to enjoy this restaurant with my family, infact we went once everyweek. But recently we have noticed that they over priced the food and at the same time downside the portions. Wow! It is really a joke to put it mildly. The food you see in the menue is not the same exact provided on your table. You do not get what you see on the menue. I do not know anymore wether to recomend them for their rice or not.

Absolutely fabulous food! We ordered the karahi gosht and afghani pilawu as we were driving down from Inverness through a very difficult storm Isha, about 20 mins before reaching Newcastle. When we reached, everything was ready piping hot and the service was brilliant too. Very polite waiters and a very clean place. The prices are decent too. I Would definitely recommend it to anyone!

I ordered mixed Grill dishes for 3 people, chips and a couple of naans paid over £70, what we received was so disappointing, extortionate pricing for afew chicken wings etc. Will not be using again.

The delivery driver didn't showed up and marked on the system food already delivery. I had to call restaurant to find out what's going on. I tried calling delivery driver directly but nobody answered the call. Finally food was delivered after calling here and there. Not a reliable service. Quite disappointed.

We have dined out in Newcastle many a time, however only visited this place today. Had the mixed sizzler, lamb charsi karai and kabuli pilau. The food was very tasty and freshly prepared. Prices were very much in line with restaurants serving a similar menu. Will definitely return in future.

A really nice workteam searving an exceptional food

The rice I got with my meal was undercooked. They gave plates that we did not use as they offered the dishes in their own plates. There wasn’t really enough room for all the plates so we had to stand them. The chicken was also slightly chewy.

Good came lamb cutlets where quite small salad was sloppy and the £6 bottle of coke £6 mind you was missing from order delivery driver attempted to give a can of pop instead however he did return within 30 mins with a bottle

Simply Tasteless food,I went there by the name that it is Afghani food but, really disappointed.

For everyone attention to read and I highly recommend everyone to please avoid going there to waste your money and ruin your eat out with friends and family. I have visited this restaurant with 6 other cousins of mine who are residing in the surrounding areas. First of all I’m Afghan myself and it was my first time visiting “Afghan” Grill House from Birmingham, the only reason we chose to eat in this restaurant was for the unique afghan foods also Afghans are known for their warm welcome and hospitalities but they are misrepresenting our food, cultures and manners in fact the guys working in there are acting like gang of thugs. we were very disappointed as we entered and took seated nobody bothered to even come near us after about 15mins we had to call for a waiter to come and take our order a young guy who seems to be a none Afghan but could speak Farsi came and took our order of 2x Kabuli pilao, 1x Manto, 1x Chopan kebab, 2x lamb Karahi 1.5kg and Naan breads. One of my cousin have a mutual friend working in the restaurant, he gone into the grill section which had no door just say Hi and presumably speak with the chef but they became very insecure of his incursion because of extremely poor hygiene in the kitchen, none cooked chicken and other meat kept in buckets/trays under the work tables they literally started to push him out and being very rude. My cousin accepted his mistake and said sorry for going into the unauthorised section and when I said ‘brother as an afghan you shouldn’t push and being rude to people’ he replied you can leave and go somewhere else. When we asked for the two particular men names they refused to give us. All the above had happened because one of us witnessed the reality their kitchen.

I have been to many afghani restaurants but this one is absolutely brilliant, best halal Afghani food ever. We went there with family and friends on our way back from Edinburgh and loved their service and food. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.
