Afghan Grill House in Newcastle upon Tyne

Pros - chips, garlic sauce, naan bread and the homemade chilli sauce were all great. Cons - milkshake contained no ice cream so was slightly warm and disappointing. The glass it was in was chipped at the rim. The seats are all ready for the tip as they're an absolute state with ripped leather everywhere. We were seated right next to a disabled toilet when the restaurant was almost entirely empty. We also had to go to the front to request service to order and then again to pay because staff were stood about talking. Wasn't too keen on the mixed grill platter but it was edible. Wouldnt return I'm afraid

Edit 09/03/24: We go there biweekly and they've never disappointed us. My go-to food is biryani, no doubt. We tried curry as well; it’s very different from Indian curry but very rich and flavorful. I would easily and definitely say this is the best restaurant in Newcastle. 20/12/23 We had kabuli pilau, lamb biryani and peshwari chana dal and they all tasted absolutely amazing. Rich, full of complex flavors and spice. I’m glad we went there with a good appetite, the portions were really generous. The staff members were lovely too. We’ll definitely try mantos next time.

Good experience and taste but heaters aren't effective too cold

Order lamb shank with rice paid 17 and got only a tiny piece of lamb. This is ridiculous. Not ordering again.

Just wastage of money Highly highly highly not recommended I went last week with my family and we ordered chicken karahi and biryani, chicken karahi was not karahi and this was 3rd time same issue meat wasn’t cooked properly and that was taste less staff said they will make the new one but same issue no taste they need to tran the chief, Biryani was good

The food is amazing. One of the staff members has been questionable on a few basis, Indian fella who doesn't understand customers needs and is very pushy. Everytime I've been he is very smiley but maybe needs more training in service. Prefer to deal with the young men who I think are relatives of the owner. Atmosphere is OK but a gem for food - highly recommend their kabli piloau and lamb karahi boneless charsi style.

Tasty food at reasonable price!

Its overpriced, they sell sheep meat as lamb meat which had strong distinctive smell. One big turn off was that the BBQ food was actually prepared in an Air Fryer and was not well cooked. Extremely disappointed.

Brother your standard are dropping a little bit o still give you 4 stars but charging high price for a 2 litre bottle of coke is more than 10 litres of diesel. Please stick to things you know and improve. I will come back and try food again to see improvement and will change my review.

We use to enjoy this restaurant with my family, infact we went once everyweek. But recently we have noticed that they over priced the food and at the same time downside the portions. Wow! It is really a joke to put it mildly. The food you see in the menue is not the same exact provided on your table. You do not get what you see on the menue. I do not know anymore wether to recomend them for their rice or not.

Food is good but the price is too expensive

Absolutely fabulous food! We ordered the karahi gosht and afghani pilawu as we were driving down from Inverness through a very difficult storm Isha, about 20 mins before reaching Newcastle. When we reached, everything was ready piping hot and the service was brilliant too. Very polite waiters and a very clean place. The prices are decent too. I Would definitely recommend it to anyone!

The food was tasty as well as cooked to the optimum level. The staff was also very kind and helpful.

I ordered mixed Grill dishes for 3 people, chips and a couple of naans paid over £70, what we received was so disappointing, extortionate pricing for afew chicken wings etc. Will not be using again.

We have dined out in Newcastle many a time, however only visited this place today. Had the mixed sizzler, lamb charsi karai and kabuli pilau. The food was very tasty and freshly prepared. Prices were very much in line with restaurants serving a similar menu. Will definitely return in future.

A really nice workteam searving an exceptional food

The rice I got with my meal was undercooked. They gave plates that we did not use as they offered the dishes in their own plates. There wasn’t really enough room for all the plates so we had to stand them. The chicken was also slightly chewy.

The place looks nice inside it was a little bit cold inside and they still had little the name off the old bussines inside service is standerd the food was really nice the pilu the raise and carrot it was moist the meat was melt off the bone the flavours where really nice enjoyed it

Simply Tasteless food,I went there by the name that it is Afghani food but, really disappointed.

For everyone attention to read and I highly recommend everyone to please avoid going there to waste your money and ruin your eat out with friends and family. I have visited this restaurant with 6 other cousins of mine who are residing in the surrounding areas. First of all I’m Afghan myself and it was my first time visiting “Afghan” Grill House from Birmingham, the only reason we chose to eat in this restaurant was for the unique afghan foods also Afghans are known for their warm welcome and hospitalities but they are misrepresenting our food, cultures and manners in fact the guys working in there are acting like gang of thugs. we were very disappointed as we entered and took seated nobody bothered to even come near us after about 15mins we had to call for a waiter to come and take our order a young guy who seems to be a none Afghan but could speak Farsi came and took our order of 2x Kabuli pilao, 1x Manto, 1x Chopan kebab, 2x lamb Karahi 1.5kg and Naan breads. One of my cousin have a mutual friend working in the restaurant, he gone into the grill section which had no door just say Hi and presumably speak with the chef but they became very insecure of his incursion because of extremely poor hygiene in the kitchen, none cooked chicken and other meat kept in buckets/trays under the work tables they literally started to push him out and being very rude. My cousin accepted his mistake and said sorry for going into the unauthorised section and when I said ‘brother as an afghan you shouldn’t push and being rude to people’ he replied you can leave and go somewhere else. When we asked for the two particular men names they refused to give us. All the above had happened because one of us witnessed the reality their kitchen.

Fast service and the employee was very friendly. I liked the restaurant and the interior decor👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I have been to many afghani restaurants but this one is absolutely brilliant, best halal Afghani food ever. We went there with family and friends on our way back from Edinburgh and loved their service and food. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

I ordered, waited for 30 mins and asked them... the chicken I ordered for take away had not been touched. Not a place to go when you are hungry.

We moved from Manchester, looking for like Manchester food but Afghan grill reminds us same taste, fish pakro and Lamb karhai was awesome 👏 the guy Adi served us was very friendly. Highly recommended

We had a lovely evening. The restaurant was clean and the staff was polite with good customer service . The food was first of all mouth watering and of good quality. This is definitely worth a do over and I am recommending it because the food is really yummy.

Cash only at the moment - April 2023. One of our all time favourite restaurants. The food is gorgeous everytime particularly the kabuli pulao. Service is lovely and the venue is welcoming and clean. Highly recommend They now have fresh made kulfi! And mango lassi is to Die for.

Fantastic authentic food. Everyone enjoyed it. The meat was nice a tender. The karahi was Delecious and rich. A must try if you haven't tried this cuisine before. And even if you do and like it, it's a perfect place.

Went last night for aftar. Service was good but the food was terrible. Chicken Karahi was the worst I ever had and ribs were still raw as if they came straight out of freezer. I would avoid on any cost.

Terrible food and it was an hour late. Not for the first time either but last time I will be ordering from here. Food bang average, meat tough and chewy and the owner swore at me on the phone when I asked why it was late. All whilst I am staying at freeman hospital due to my child being poorly.

I visited this restaurant two days ago. They have a wide variety of food but the quality is just poor. We didn’t enjoy the food and service was prioritized for takeout orders. I spent around an hour to be served!

Qabili Pilau was amazing! Lamb is so soft and the rice is delicious. Big portion - we ordered 3 portions and we eaten by 2 adult and 3 kids. Reasonable price for the portion. Quick service! Clean area, friendly staff. 5 star for Qabili Pilau!

Service was ok not upto the matk

The best qabili pilau I ever taste in my life. The lamb is so moist and tender. Love it when they lavishly put raisins and carrots. My wife loves spicy lamb ribs. We live 45 minutes away and I wish they were just at the end of my road. It is worth the journey every time we are craving qabili pilau and lamb ribs. Mango lassi is so good. We used to love Al Jazeera/At Taiba in Manchester, but not anymore!

What makes a restaurant truly spectacular? Worth talking about for weeks on end? Worth making a special trip for in a city of literally hundreds of excellent eateries? In my book, it's the restaurant's desire to feed, to share something unusual or unexpected, and to entertain. Afghan Grill does all of this in spades. My friend and I had never tried Afghan food but the gentleman serving us was happy to give us a tour of the singular cuisine on offer. Start with hummus, naturally, served with warm fresh bread. Then a warm, rich, and generous stew of aubergines and sundried tomatoes. Daals as comforting palette cleansers. This felt like being welcomed into someone's home, eased into cosy comfort. Then the main courses; generous, hearty centrepieces which became the sole topic of conversation for a full week after. Chicken karahi on the bone, infused with the spark and firey playfulness of fresh chillies. And the signature Machicha Qabili - a lamb shank pressure-cooked to unbelievable tenderness, served on a bed of rice with currants and carrots. As the meat slides effortlessly off the bone, it glistens with the same deep vermillion as the berries hidden in the rice. It has an unbelievable, almost gamey, richness and depth of flavour. It's generous, unprecedented, and as the bold meat dances with the delicate sweetness of the rice, it's a thoroughly entertaining symphony. Prepare to be amazed.

Bought food for 70 pounds asked them to make the food a bit spicy and they made it the most spicest food ever in my life adding different colour of chillies to make the food more spicy in my life. Worst experience of my life Never going to come back.

I've been to all the Indian restaurant and takesaways in Gateshead and Newcastle and I'm more than happy to say that this place serves the most Amazing Indian/Afghani food I've ever tasted. I've been there multiple times and never been disappointed. Service is top notch. Environment is nice and cozy and prices are fair.

Visited whilst working away. Came on a recommendation but was disappointed with the service and food. Waiter was either having a bad day or just a 🔔🔚. Started by getting in a huff because I asked to be seated in the corner as opposed to the seat he offered in the middle. After ordering he ran off before I could ask for a drink. Arrived with a nan bread but didn't bring the curry for another 10 mins at which point I asked for another naan. This tipped him off the edge and I had to justify why I wanted another? He then proceeded to take it back and stick it back in the oven for 30 seconds. At this point I was done arguing and ate some food before asking for it to be packed and paid the bill. A shame as the other staff seemed okay.

I am not a local resident and thought about giving their food a try. My expectations were not too high. I tried kabli pulao and to my surprise, the food was delightful. Serving was generous and had more than enough lamb pieces in it, that 3 of us could eat from it still had some food left.

Great kabuli pillau, great karahi,spicy ribs a must, waiter polite and helpful, only down side of at all was wait for fantastic meal, but well worth the wait.

Very surprising they never tell you in advance that its CASH only and they will point you to near by cash machine ONCE YOU FINISHED EATING..QUESTION

Best place for afghani food. Lamb chop was very good I really enjoy it. Also the fish pakora was just wow. I love it. The biriyani was very good but I don’t like it, it was Sweet so. My most favourite think is Mango lachi that was very very good best mangosteen lachi i had in uk. Overall it’s a great place for heaving Afghani food. 9 Out of 10.

This restaurant is right at my door step but never bothered to try it out. I was recommended by a friend. Wow, I was really shocked at how good this place is. Hidden gem. Great quality food, very good customer service. Throughly enjoyed my visit. Keep it up.

Food tastes incredible, however some lack of organisation by staff

Went in Eid for a presumably good restaurant based on the rating. Ordered mix kebab, Karahi and Mango Lassi. Food came very late. We had to wait for the bread to come then. Both are not related to the authentic ones. Had to eat black pepper with some chicken basically. Regret coming here. Not recommended.

The food was not tasting good The service was bad

One of the worst experience. Food was brought at different times. The grill arrived first and 20 minutes later, the karahi did. The naan arrived 7 minutes after karahi which should come together. Unfortunately, the kebab sizzle was full of tumeric and had not other taste regardless of 5 different types ordered. Moreover, the chicken karahi was only made of wings. No other part of chicken was used. Full of black pepper and not really good. When ask d about difference in Karahi. He said the spices are same but difference is the sauce. It was very hot inside and when asked about it, they didn't have any answer. There were some flies next to the window sill. Prices not suitable for food served. Very high Overall 1/10 Ambiance 3/10 Food 1/10 Service 1/10

First of all, wonderful service. Good attitude, understandable English for explaining the dish. However, the food not only taste bad also required long wait. (Are they laughing and playing in the kitchen?) We order Naan not charcoal. Every bite full of burn bitterness. Dipping sauce are your best friend to help you swallow it.

Average food to slow on customer service

Was there on the 20th May with a couple of friends. One of my friends love this place as he may have visited it at least two dozen times in the last 12 months. I have been there at least 5 times. This is the first time I am writing a review though. This is a local restaurant which seeks to be popular among locals. We ordered chicken curry and afghan pulav. The curry comes wirh two Naan roti. The curry was a bit tasteless compared to my other visits. The pulav is good with lamb. Overall the service is very good and staff are really friendly.

It was really nice I came with my family. But the only problem is I'm worried about the reviews people are sending against this restraunt whats wrong with this?? Its quite good. Restraunt if u trust me but people don't understand that u have to go and tell them but I will agree,service needs to go higher my uncle 2 times had to get up to get the waiters attractions. and sometimes THEY CANT EVEN HEAR?

Great new restaurant, authentic taste of North West Pakistan and Afghanistan. Must try chappli kebab, rarely found elsewhere. They have a website now to order online too.

Have been on numerous occasions and the food has been decent but the service always lacked. This time unfortunately the food was below par and one dish was inedible. Spoke to the manager and he pointed me towards his kitchen staff. Addressed my issue with them and was informed that they will let the chef know. Waited 15 minutes and nothing happened, went to the counter and spoke to the owner and said that it couldn’t be helped as they make no profit hence why couldn’t get a refund. I requested that the make that dish for me to takeaway. Got home and it was the same dish re-packaged. Really disappointed

Excellent food. Ordered a 10 inch chicken Kiev pizza and it was brilliant, I could have eaten the box along with it!. Would recommend this to anyone!.

I booked the restaurant for my birthday for over 30 people and I can't fault it. The staff were amazing and really helpful and accommodating. The food was fresh and on time and above all else tasted great. Everyone was happy and had a great time from old to young. 100% recommend this for its food and service!
