Acleaf in Plymouth

Àclèaf is a fine-dining restaurant at a five-star country manor house. Boringdon Hall Hotel outside Plymouth,headed up by chef Scott Paton. Serves a four-course signature menu. While not exactly cheap,the prices at are lower than those at some other fine-dining restaurants. It is open to both hotel guests and non-residents. The reestaurant is located in the former minstrel gallery overlooking the great hall. Once seated you are served a glass of Gusbourne and presented with a cryptic piece of paper showing different shapes and colours. What it was actually used for, was to decide which type of pre-dessert is served to you. The menu is a seasonal preset of four courses £120. Which is pretty much as per an a la carte. The meal started with canapes and home made breads and butters. Followed by our four choices of meal. Beetroot Chicken liver Crab Iberico Turbot Duck Egg Chocolate Service and hospitality here was impeccable. This restaurant, even though a long drive, is a testament to quality of food and overall an experience. Although we didn't drive as we were staying.

Beautifully cooked and presented. Lots of extra elements to the menu you're given were included which added an extra excitement. Stand out for me, were the puddings. The duck egg one was great but the chocolate miso was fabulous. At the end of the '4' courses we were still a bit hungry so had the cheese course which was absolutely delicious and really interesting. The staff were all really friendly and formal but not in a ridiculous way, as is sometimes the case. James (I think 🤔) was so genuinely enthusiastic, it was a pleasure him being part of our evening.

We ate here for our wedding anniversary on the 4th of September, everything was faultless some of if not the best food I have ever eaten. The best service we have ever had your staff are a real credit to your restaurant as are your chefs. Also great suggestion to pair sake with the cheese course. We will definitely return.

I'll be honest. Acleaf has been on my list for a while, but as it's a little out of town, I've delayed going for some time. I can honestly say, that was an utter mistake. Don't delay! If you've got a special occasion, a birthday, celebration, or a night off I couldn't recommend Acleaf more. I've eaten around the world, in many a premium restaurant for special occasions, and I was blown away by the food, the service and the experience. People might say it's expensive for four courses, but we left after having nearly 10 courses of some of the best food I've had. The wagyu beef was a highlight, and the surprises throughout the evening were so special and delicious too. Not sure how to top this experience, but I'm sure we'll be back to try!

We were here for a special girls' treat and it was fantastic. This was my third time eating at Acleaf and the quality of the food was excellent as ever, I was especially pleased that the vegan diner felt very welcome which is not always the case in Michelin star restaurants. The service was friendly and helpful throughout with touches of theatre that added to the experience. My only regret was not having room for cheese . Thank you we shall return!

We have had the pleasure of dining at Acleaf a few times, and have always had exceptional meals and service. However this time we attended as a large family group for our daughter's 18th birthday, and the team really excelled. They made her and her friends feel very special, and took great care with the rest of us also. The food was outstanding and our sommelier explaining the wines to accompany each course did an amazing job considering we were all eating different things. Everything ran like clockwork, we don't know how the kitchen managed us all so well. We were made to feel relaxed, and staff were attentive; David deserves a special mention. He was an exceptional host and one of the family by the end of the meal. Truly outstanding and we can't thank you enough

We have been extremely fortunate to dine in 1, 2 and 3 Michelin Star restaurants on different continents. I can hand on heart say, our dinner at Àclèaf was up there with the very best. Dining at Àclèaf is not simply heading out for a nice dinner, it is a beautifully crafted & curated experience from the moment of arrival. What you witness, and throughly enjoy, is a masterclass in hospitality and you can see just how much thought, care & skill has been put into the whole experience. The restaurant, set on a mezzanine level within the equally stunning Boringdon Hall Hotel, is intimate and gives each diner the feeling of space & privacy. With the four-course al la carte menu, there’s a choice of four dishes per course, which reflect the availability of seasonal ingredients. There’s also an optional cheese course (which we could not resist). Every single course was excellent and we really enjoyed the interaction with different members of the team & brigade from the kitchen. There’s an extensive (yet not overbearing) wine list and your visit should include the walk-through wine seller on the ground floor. The setting is superb, the welcome warm & engaging, the food fabulous, the presentation is culinary precision & the service sublime. A special mention to restaurant manager Vlad, and Hannah who took great care to ensure we had the most memorable of evenings. Highly recommended and will become our go-to for special occasions. Àclèaf is not a one star quality restaurant; it is definitely worth two stars. Scott Paton and the service team have produced a superb menu, an ambiance that is welcoming and not at all stuffy and food that is simple but beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Highly recommended.

We arrived early to have a drink and ordered 2 cocktails but they were only delivered when we were half way through our bread course. We had the accompanying wine flight which again was very expensive but worth having as the wines were delicious and went perfectly with our food choices. My negative/critical comment about the Acleaf is that service staff, and that includes the chefs who come to the table all speak very very quickly and we had to ask them several times to repeat what they were saying and to speak slower as we were unable to catch what they were describing to us. I understand that it is probably tedious for staff to have to explain about each dish or wine when you do it everyday for every diner but this was the first time we had been there and our enjoyment of the items would have been greater if we had been able to hear all that they were saying about them. The information could have been written down and presented as a booklet to take with you as a memento as we probably missed more than we did hear :( Yes, the dinner was eye wateringly expensive but delicious and a lovely experience though I have to agree with another reviewer that portions are VERY small. Some courses could have been eaten in 1 or 2 bites. I do appreciate the work that has gone into each element of the meal though and all dishes looked beautiful. Our food was included as part of our hotel package but the bill we were presented with at the end of the evening including wine and 2 cocktails amounted to a smudge under £500!

My wife and I ate at the Acleaf as part of of a 2 night break and had the 4 course meal. Everything from start to finish was superb, from the moment we were taken up the stairs to the restaurant, the location of the table (overlooking the bar area), the welcome we received from all the staff and, of course, the food. Beautifully presented and so much flavour (the compressed pear was a stand out!), we cannot thank you enough. We're coming back and are looking forward to being thoroughly spoilt again.

This wasn’t my first visit to this culinary gem, and I can say with certainty that it will not be my last. It was a fabulous evening, a real event. The food was exquisite, the wine pairing was delicious and the staff were very attentive. This was not our first visit to Acleaf and it will definitely not be the last. Thank you so very much for a great evening.

This restaurant is fabulous, even our 18 year old daughter who is so fussy was impressed and enjoyed everything. Every course was greeted with a “WOW” with presentation and taste. The staff are really friendly, helpful and attentive. We could not fault anything. It’s not cheap but worth every penny.

I decided to come back to Acleaf to give it another chance (much better this time). My husband liked it so we had to give it another try, it can only get better with time right? Still vegetarian and there were more options which I was very happy about. Again the bread course was lovely very much enjoyed that! But the pre dessert was again melted which I was a bit let down about. I enjoyed how the chefs presented some courses, wasn’t all front of house. I did think a lack of staff was there, and the staff that were there weren’t attentive enough for me or quite understood what kind of setting they were in but that can easily be fixed with a little bit of training. Still not the best Michelin restaurant I’ve been too but it’s getting there and could be something really special just needs a bit more time to work things out but all in all a better experience then last time! Faultless from the moment we stepped through the doors for pre-dinner cocktails, until the minute we left. It is said that we eat with our eyes and this was certainly a work of art. The explosion of different flavours in each dish was sublime. Highly recommend.

As a couple, we were fortunate to dine at Àclèaf for four nights as part of a room and dining package for a special birthday celebration. Any worries we might have had about a potentially limited menu were dispelled on the first evening. There were four starters, four entrées, four main courses and four puddings, and during our stay we were able to enjoy each one. We can honestly say that every dish was exquisite and beautifully presented. We chose the cheese course once; it was delicious but you will need a healthy appetite to do it and the rest of the meal justice. Although the wine pairing was not a cheap option, it was good value. The wines were perfectly chosen to complement every dish, and the story behind each one and why it had been selected added to the whole experience. There were several other well judged touches that just added to our overall enjoyment of the meal. The setting, looking out over the Great Hall, was fabulous, and we were looked after superbly by the whole team, led by Vlad. Àclèaf is up with the very best of all the restaurants we have been to over several years. We would recommend it for any special occasion or romantic meal, or for anyone who just wants to enjoy the finest British cuisine using seasonal local produce. Àclèaf is a real gem - we will definitely make a return visit.
