3rd Avenue in Brighton and Hove

We booked Third Avenue for our family of five to remember our dear mum who we sadly lost 3 years ago. We booked for Sunday lunch menu, which said Sunday Roast. However we were so disappointed as they told us on arrival the Sunday Lunch Menu advertised on the website was out of date and not available. We were then told no bottled water available, no Prawns, no pigs cheeks, only one bottle of the red wine we ordered was available, no beer available wanted to order. They said the prawn order wasn't delivered that day, but we later found out that a private function held in their sister restaurant for a christening were served with prawns. Service was so slow. After one hour we got bread and bread. Served our steaks cold so had to return to kitchen. Took 3 hours in all. No time for dessert. Our Waitress, Tailor was so apologetic and helped make us feel better. However it really spoiled what should have been a day of remembering mum to a nightmare. Website and manager which wasn't available to speak to need updating.

Lovely bar, lovely service. Nice place to sit on the terrace and chill for a couple of drinks. Cocktails were perfect .. not eaten there yet but definitely plan to.

Saw a friend for food/drinks. Was welcomed by Joey. He was fully knowledgeable of the food and drinks. The food we chose came as small plates, as we were sharing. The food was delicious. Full of flavour. Will be coming back. Would highly recommend.

Even when Joey had told us we doubled if not tripled there income for the night) just goes to show you what kind of person Ben is. They are untrustworthy and lie to your face. Do not go here.

We booked this place for our mother's 92nd birthday and we had an amazing experience. The service we got from Joey was fantastic, he couldn't have done more to make the event special, he is a real asset to this place, thank you Joey!! The food was excellent, very tasty and well cooked along with the excellent service, Highly recommended!!

A great pub/bar with good food and fantastic, friendly staff.

Food was nice but I think some extra caution / care around allergies is needed. The waiter was very friendly and helpful otherwise.

Hi would just like to write a brief review of our time Saturday evening. We had a truly wonderful time. The steaks were especially good and the cocktails super. Staff very polite helpful and Jolly . The staff were exceptionally respective to our needs and as we novices to cocktails that helped. Friends also rated the curry rather amazing as not an authentic Indian restaurant. Big thanks to the third avenue team . We will be back soon!

Do not ever book this venue for an event We booked this venue for an engagement party and it’s been nothing but a nightmare. I paid a £1000 deposit for this venue i was in contact with the owner Ben he took the deposit and then in the same chain of emails I asked him to organise me a DJ on the 11/07/24 he said he would find me one and get back to me within the week. I heard nothing back I sent countless emails to him and was constantly ringing the number. The week before our party the manager joey contacted myself and said he would sort me one out that there would be no worries that Ben was a nightmare. He then put me on the phone to Ben who was so rude saying he didn’t know what my problem was that joey had found me a dj and that I had only just paid a deposit. However it was still £1000 of my money. He also said he hadn’t received any emails from me that they had maybe gone to spam. However this only happens if you have never emailed the person before. So night of the party comes round we pay an extra £250 cash to have security at the party for a private event joey asks me if I want to start letting random people in off the street to bring up the minimum spend to which I said no as we were trying to celebrate with friends and family. As the night goes on about 11pm joey comes up to my fiancé and his friend shows them two card machines one for £2700 and the other for £756 and said we have done about £300 cash he then says to him if you tap your card for £500 then you will have hit the minimum spend of £4000 and will get your £1000 deposit back. The party wasn’t to finish till 1am so we said no. The bar was busy all night and people spent a lot of money. We have asked for our deposit back and have now been told we only spent £2950 and that they are keeping our deposit. However joey sent me a picture of two card machines through message which added up to 3100 but they are saying that one is from dinner service next door. There was 2 couples in the restaurant there is no way they spent £900. Joey is saying he didn’t show us machines that said that and calling us liars. The bar staff were drinking out of the shot bottles and putting the back and using the same one to serve customers. I would stay well clear of this venue. Not worth the stress

If I could leave negative stars I would. The menu online is wrong and outdated, the menus served at lunch were wet, stained and thin crinkled paper - the napkins served with lunch of a similar quality and dirty. The drinks and food options were limited, with them having 4/14 gins on the menu available, very limited food options with staff blaming delivery problems. The food was wrongly served with items missed, and other items cooked and served as an “option” as they didn’t have further ordered choices available. When food arrived it was cold or over cooked. One staff member apologising, said he had a new chef and other staff phoned in sick, he was feeling embarrassed and noting he didn’t leave London to work for somewhere like this. The fruit placed in our drinks was past its best. Advised I was not paying, asked if I would pay half but refused. I offered twice to leave my contact number for the boss to contact me but that offer wasn’t taken up on. We even questioned if it was shutting down. Would not recommend to anyone and will not be back. The owners should be embarrassed.

We hosted a 30th Birthday Party at Third Avenue and it was a great event. After looking at almost every (limited) option Brighton & Hove had to offer we chose Third Avenue and we're very happy we did! The day ran without a hitch start to finish, guests raved about it being the best party food they've ever had. And the bar staff went above and beyond to ensure everyone's requirements we met for. Can't recommend Third Avenue highly enough for a special event.

Passed by whilst out with friends & decided to pop in for a cocktail. Didn’t get the guys name who looked after us but he was an asset to this business. (Friday evening approx 6pm) - he was polite, professional and made the most beautiful cocktails. Decided this is our next venue for our regular girls afternoon.

A brilliant dinner with our family. We have 4 young kids and the staff were brilliant. Very accommodating and nothing a problem. Food was top class. We would highly recommend.

We came here for a family meal last weekend 12 of us and had the most amazing tasty food, everything came out really quickly, the service was great, professional and friendly staff and the venue was beautiful. I have been there a few times now in my opinion Third Avenue has The nicest venue in the area reasonable prices and good food.

Absolute tramps whose names begin with J with steal money and act like his mum died in London for attention. Avoid. He wears a Bape jacket and other pubs in Brighton facilitate him. Poor man thinks owning a stone Island lets him con people. Avoid here and black lion! Joe who also drinks in black lion is a begger, please don't listen to sob stories.

We arrived on time for our table to be told we had cancelled the booking. We hadn’t. The waitress at the bar was quite rude about this insisting that someone cancelled. After a lot of shifting us from table to table we were eventually settled. We then sat there for half an hour before anyone came to ask if we would like drinks. Another 15 minutes later we were given menus. We ordered. Only two of us had starters which turned up after a long wait. The mains then started to arrive. So, one person got their full main and one person got their side and no main. And then we waited. And waited. Two more mains turned up. Still waiting for two. At which point the waitress comes over and says they haven’t got one of the veggie mains. After 1.5 hours they realise they don’t have one of the meals ordered. At which point tempers were lost. We told the manager we were leaving and would not pay. Our son and daughter in law had come down from Edinburgh for the weekend and this appalling service ruined what should have been a lovely family get together.

We visited Third Avenue restaurant for Sunday lunch. The ribeye steak was cooked to perfection, complemented by the green salad, as was our other order, the house hamburger. Excellent service from the patron David. Thoroughly recommend this restaurant in all respects. Decor, service and good quality food. What more can one ask for?

Wish I’d found this place years ago. Had brunch there today and can honestly say everything was impeccable. Don’t let the exterior fool you - funky inside and a brilliant menu with very cool music to dine to. Love it!

Worst experience to date. If I hadn't been with elderly people who would have been embarrassed I'd have left without paying. Can not understand how the place can remain open with such poor service, food, care etc. Was a special occassion which I'd called ahead to ensure they would be aware and help with. Wrong food, wrong wine, uncooked food etc...I can see others have had a similar experience and they've blamed it on the chef being new qns unsupervised....they were saying the same thing in December!!!! If you go for lunch it seems to be worse as they have untrained unqualified staff... can't even get the basics right has to ask feo cutlery, condiments ...we never even got any pepper and salt! Raw food, inedible food....I even had to call the restaurant on the phone to get service as the waitress paid zero attention to us in an empty restaurant. Absolute waste of money and time.

Absolutely shocking. The first time I've ever taken service off a bill. Communicated before it was for my mums 80th and needed disabled access. IT IS NOT WHEEELCHAIR FRIENDLY interm of WC access. Good was served cold, served RAW broccoli head rather than frilled tender stem, burrito cheese instead of boasts cheese and inedible squid.... incorrect ingredients, wrong wine, service was non existent. Didn't bring menu's, pour wine...eneded up having to call the restaurant ny phone to get them to come to table. It was without any other patrons do being busy wasn't an excuse just poor training, bad chef and total pack of care the our experience. Real shame back last year and thought it was nice. To the owner, you've got a lovely venue...you need to get better staff to stay afloat.

We were there on Mother's Day, came from Basingstoke just for one day with a family of 7 adults and 1 child. We had choices from the Brunch and Lunch menu. Crab Royale was amazing, also Grilled Gambas, Padron Peppers, Pork Skewers, and of course truffle fries. Nice cocktails, Lychee Rose Martini, and Raspberry Fizz. Staff was amazing, we've got a small and cute babyccino for the child as a compliment. Liked this place and we'll come back definitely again.

Came for Mothers Day with the family and had the worst experience ever. They blamed it on the kitchen but the food was cold and dishes were missed. Drinks never arrived. Other tables had as bad if not worse experience than ours including undercooked food and vert long waits. We will not be back!

The place lacks atmosphere. Dead at 7pm on a Saturday, loads of staff and no customers. Couldn’t put my finger on it but needs something to refresh. It’s a nice looking place and the staff were really friendly but yeh just needs some atmosphere. I don’t like chefs hanging out behind the bar and helping themselves to drinks from the fridges, it’s not a good look. I get they are bored with no customers but best to not drink high high value stock. Just a personal preference from a previous landlord

Third Avenue is a lovely bar with a great atmosphere a good place to go for dinner/drinks and music. We hired out an area for my brothers birthday and had the best time

Delicious brunch on a sunny Saturday. Wasn't sure if they were open as it can be a bit tricky to tell from the outside, but glad we went in. Food was absolutely fantastic, and the price was incredibly reasonable for such a lovely restaurant and great portions.

I had brunch here with my family, and it was amazing. The gorgeous interior design of Third Avenue brings such a lovely atmosphere, and a pleasurable experience. We had brunch and the eggs were cooked perfectly, the avocado was very good, and the toast was perfect. The staff are lovely, the bartender was speaking to us about what drinks we like, and made us our own special drink, with the knowledge he found out from drinks we like. The waiters and waitresses were very kind and polite, speaking to us and making sure we had great service. It’s a lovely place to go to and eat, with great quality food and amazing service.

Very mediocre experience I just don’t know where to begin : We came around and got some menus which were not the same so kinda confusing. After 30 mins we had to ask for tap water because our tea and drinks were not coming - considering the place was only half empty I still don’t have explanation on this delay. The waitress came to say there was something wrong with the avocado and they couldn’t do the avocado on toast so we had to order something else - fair enough - we were offered to put tomato slices instead of avocado. After 45 mins I went to ask how were they getting on with the food because it was only salted brunch we ordered : eggs on toast etc - I was told they were checking - 15 mins later I went to ask again and they say they didn’t know why it was taking so long to make the food - at that time only 3 tables of customers including us were still there. I came back one last time and asked what was going on in this place - I asked for the bill because no one could tell us why the food was not coming and the manager was just saying “sorry” but no information about the drama in the kitchen - we wasted 80 mins of our time and had to go somewhere else for food. Gentle reminder - you are nothing without clients so you might want to consider to close your business or get back to basic ASAP - I don’t get why you would do that to your customers.

We came from Oxford for Christmas Day Lunch with family. At £90 a head we were expecting an exceptional experience. How wrong can you be. The restaurant was full and it was obvious there were not enough staff as we waited so long for drinks and food to arrive. We had given our selection off the Christmas menu a couple of weeks in advance, so there was no excuse for our meals not to arrive as detailed. This is exactly what happened. There were things missing, the food was cold and the deserts were a joke! How can a Baileys knickerbocker glory arrive as a scoop of ice cream in a small glass with some frozen berries thrown over? I could go on and on! This restaurant obviously has some serious issues which need to be addressed. Please do not waste your money.

Christmas Day….a time of joy and celebration with loved ones….and unfortunately on this occasion some really poor service and some oversold and underrated food. Third Avenue seemed woefully short-staffed and disorganised on Christmas Day. Service was slow and the food was not at all like the pre-bookable menu suggested it would be with items missing from the meals and a general lack of attention to detail and zero finesse. (To the tune of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’) ……4 cold starters 3 tasteless mains 2 sloppy puds And a whole lot of misery …… Of course it didn’t really matter, we still had fun, (and we are very fortunate to have even been able to go out for lunch on Christmas Day,) but since we did go out and since it was a lot of money to spend, it is such a shame that it fell so short across all aspects….food, service and general ambience. I will not be returning to Third Avenue in a hurry. And certainly not on Christmas Day!

I tried to contact the restaurant 3 times before writing a public review but no reply. My family drove from 100 miles away for Christmas day lunch and we were hoping it would have been so much better at £90/head. The hors d'oeuvres on the table were cold, the main course was cold and the turkey was very dry, it seemed like something you'd buy from a supermarket. We waited quite a while between courses. There was butter on the table with no bread, and it took ages for our drinks to arrive. The restaurant was lovely but there was no loo roll in the toilets. Our waitresses were really nice and polite but we were very disappointed with the quality of the food.

Picture it, Saturday brunch time last week…the restaurant was nearly empty but for 2 tables (4 patrons total). The heat must have been broken because it was freezing and when asked if they would turn the heat on the waitress brought a tiny space heater…the type you may use under a desk in an office. These should have been red flags telling us to leave but the decor was cute so we stayed. The mysteriously stained cloth napkins also would have sealed it if we’d seen them from the beginning. We started with tea as it was still very cold where we were seated. The Dozie Girl special blend sounded nice so that’s what I ordered. The waitress indicated she wasn’t sure they had it so I said ok if you don’t, I’ll have the peppermint. The tea arrived with the paper tag and string still bundled around the bag sitting in the cup of hot water…not a teaspoon, sugar, or honey in sight. We asked but they never came. Ok, maybe a mistake, I mean we’re only in England it’s not like you should know how to serve a cup of tea. Then came time to place our food orders. Turns out they didn’t have 2 out of 3 of the fish orders my brunch companions and I wanted. So we all had the Gambas (prawns). We also ordered the manchego truffle fries, pardon peppers, and broccolini. Oh, we ordered cocktails too, prior to the food orders but they came some time after the food and they were fine (no complaints on the drinks). The food however - left a lot to desired, like flavor. I was searching for taste with every bite but by the time I finished the 3 prawns that came on the plate I could not find any flavor. Pardon peppers were fine. Fries were disappointing as the waitresses talked them up a bit - the cheese wasn’t even grated properly and the broccolini arrived cold. I’m not sure who was in the kitchen but one of my brunch companions theorized that the B team was on and it wasn’t that they didn’t have the ingredients for the other dishes, it was that the person didn’t know how to prepare them. I’m not ready to give this much credit. If you do decide to stop by make sure you’ve eaten before and order cocktails but be prepared for the 20 to 30 minute wait before the drink is in your hand. P.s.: the toilets 🥴 needed repair, a good cleaning, and a candle or air freshener.

I forgot to review this place from some time ago, but have just stumbled across it again and thought ‘how has this place got above 4 stars on average?!’. The service here was absolutely appalling, it really ruined our evening. The waitresses were all young, inexperienced, and didn’t want to be there. We didn’t receive any service for about 30 minutes upon sitting down in a half empty restaurant, and didn’t have a drinks menu... The waitresses kept their heads down at all times and avoided eye contact, not coming anywhere near our corner of the restaurant. Our order was then wrongly taken, and when I pointed this out upon receiving our food, the waitress tried to imply I didn’t order it in the first place! The hispi cabbage was the only memorable dish out of the 8-10 plates we ordered, to salvage a generous 2/5. But seriously, beware of this sub standard and somewhat entitled service - it could just ruin your evening and have you feeling like you should have gone elsewhere or stayed at home.

This oversight detracted from an otherwise decent dining experience, emphasizing the need for better maintenance and customer care. Overall, the Third Avenue Bar and Restaurant has room for enhancement in various aspects to elevate its overall appeal.

Great place for a company Christmas party, could not be better

Delicious roast beef dinner and great ambience. Very relaxing and comfortable plantation style vibe. Will definitely come again.

Great food in a lovely setting. Expensive but worth a visit

Extremely average venue. Looks promising but lacking any atmosphere. Bills itself as a bistro/cocktail bar but wouldn't really call it that. Basic cocktails with no theatre or atmosphere to bring it to life. Have had a good experience in the past at breakfast / brunch but definitely not a place that can compete with other establishments in the area for cocktails and drinks of an evening.

Best place in Hove. Fine dining, friendly and attentive staff, great selection of wine and cocktails. Good steak and fish plates. Relaxed place to have brunch, good coffee and fresh orange juice. Would recommend pancakes and full english. Nice outside seating areas.

I think we perhaps caught them on an off day, the beautiful atmosphere certainly didn't match the dining experience unfortunately. Luke warm coffee, no cutlery, sat looking at our meal going cold, full English breakfast for me with egg shell in the egg, no salt or pepper, asked for some brown sauce which never arrived. My wife had waffles that should have come with eggs, but didn't until the end of the meal. Real shame.

This is an amazing restaurant. Hove is not short of nice places that eat but this is exceptional! We've only had the vegetarian small plates but they all absolutely delivered. Definitely try it!

Popped by for a cocktail on a friend’s recommendation! We were seated on the terrace, which was comfortable enough but quite narrow for our group of 4. The restaurant is in a very central Hove location right on Church Road, so expect some road noise if you sit outside! The cocktail list is extensive, and all sounded delicious! I struggled to choose, but settled on a ‘Lychee Rose Martini’ which was presented beautifully and tasted wonderful. At £11, it was a little on the expensive side but totally worth it for a treat! I would absolutely come back again for cocktails, but would probably sit inside to soak up a bit more atmosphere 🍸

Love this place, been a regular the vibe is great, the drink selection is good especially tequila. Never been disappointed would highly recommend, chances are i will bump into you.

I was there at the Brazilian party that took on June 30th and it was delicious. Pleasant and very fun environment!

Cocktails where world class with the staff being extremely professional and kind. Ben (the owner) greeted us at the door and was great to meet. After the cocktails, we stayed to dance to the music and had the best night in Brighton. Will definitely be coming back to Brighton and to this great venue! 5 stars all the way ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Highly recommend. We visited Third Avenue for food and drink and were very impressed. The food is mostly small plates. Each plate was exceptional, so tasty! We recommend the fig and goats cheese. The wine menu was extensive. The service was what impressed me the most. All the staff here were so kind and attentive. Will be visiting again soon!

Beautiful restaurant. However, the service was appalling. Waited for over an hour after ordering our food. Finally went to enquire myself and was told there was an incident in the morning due to which food is delayed. Further 20 minutes to wait, at least. Was then told it'll be further 20 minutes wait. We said if the food doesn't arrive in the next 5 minutes, we'll be leaving. Parking was running out in 30 minutes. Food magicallly appeared within 5 minutes. But the quality wasn't great. Ordered fish goujons and mac n cheese for kids, which were decent. Waffle was only 3 quarters and not full. However, blueberry coulis with granola was delicious. The crab dish was luke warm. The muffin was barely toasted/warm with salmon. Kids weren't offered their ice cream after the meal. We had to leave at that point. Wasn't charged for the drinks but should have been discounted for the food due to such bad service. I didn't want to argue at that time because we had to leave as the parking was running out. Overall, it was a disastrous visit for Mother's Day meal when we wanted to treat my wife and kids.
