1921 Angel Hill in St Edmundsbury

Our first visit to 1921 & certainly won’t be the last - from a friendly welcome greeting offering to take costs, to knowledgeable staff knowing the menu, the most wonderful food & excellent service. All round a perfect evening & the restaurant to go to for a special occasion. The fact that by 8pm on Saturday evening all tables were taken speaks for itself!

Tasteful decor, attentive staff, quiet background music. Excellent food, subtle but intense flavours, beautiful presentation, timely delivery. Had canapé and set lunch, real value for money. Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys good food and will certainly go again.

It’s a nice venue, food was lovely and most of the service was excellent. (Irish lad and young ladies were great) The front of house chap was annoying and pushy, we didn’t like him. Portions are small for the price, the lobster main course made us laugh it was so small. Shame, wouldn’t rush back as places like Maison Bleue are slicker and better value.

Wow, we had been recommended this restaurant and were not disappointed. We had the daily special which was hare, the loin had been stuffed with black pudding the legs confit with a bean cassoulet. The whole dish was delicious. The cheese was so tasty. Overall a great meal, lovely, friendly service and all at a good price. It must be one of the best places to eat in BSE.

All 8 of us absolutely loved our experience at 1921 as part of my birthday celebrations. The tasting menu was delicious with each course bursting with flavour and presented to perfection. The paired wines really did complement each course. The staff were professional and attentive and best of all is that they joined in with the jokes and banter. Thank you Kyle and team for giving us an exceptional and memorable time. We would love to visit you again at some point in the not too distant future.

What a delight to visit a restaurant, where quality of food and service are delivered in a calm and understated room in Bury St Edmunds. We enjoyed our lunch immensely and will return, probably as often as our age permits. The staff know their onions (and other vegetables) and are helpful and polite. A most imaginative menu, complimented by wines of a very different etymology. My wife had a Japanese white, subtle and delicate, I had a Greek red, with a mix of lovely "warm" and lingering flavours. Thank you Isobel for looking after us so well (she even brought me a teaspoon so that I could enjoy every drop of the most delightful "gravy".

Always excellent food which is imaginative and well presented. Friendly and attentive service. Economical for the set lunch as well.

This was our 4th visit in 3 years and we have enjoyed them all very much. We went for the 7 course tasting menu which was superb - we were served by Izzy who was friendly and helpful. You often find places doing tasting menus are a bit over-formal - but not 1921. The atmostphere is welcoming and relaxed. I was a bit too hot at one point and asked for the air con to be turned on - which happened straight away. It was my birthday and I got a card and a small gift from the restaurant. It was a lovely occasion and we'll definitely go back.

Having already visited for lunch with friends on an earlier occasion, we decided to go for dinner to celebrate our 48th Wedding Anniversary. Once again the food was fabulous and the service superb...professional, friendly and informative. The atmosphere was relaxing helped along by a playlist that could have been chosen especially for me. In conversation with Kyle my husband mentioned the word anniversary which was picked up on and we were presented with a card and a little chocolate gift at the end of our meal...a lovey touch. We had previously recommended 1921 to a friend who was equally delighted by his visit. We will be back without a doubt.

The quality of food that you get on the set lunch menu is UNREAL!!! Honestly the most original and tasty dessert I have ever had. Lovely atmosphere. Staff were attentive but at the same time not in your face. Great balance. We only stopped in for a bite and as not a special occasion we didn't go too crazy but what we had was truly delicious. Celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary and it had to be 1921 once again Zack and his team didn’t disappoint. 1921 looks amazing after its decoration and just has the best vibe . You cannot fault the service from FOH team - Kyle n Mel always so friendly with the best service . Food was absolutely superb and couldn’t fault a thing . We are so lucky to have this restaurant in our town .

My husband and I had a fabulous '7 course tasting menu' at 1921 for our wedding anniversary last September. It was the best meal I've eaten in the town, and actually one of the best I've had in my life - only topped by a tasting menu in Thailand up high in a pod, in a large tree overlooking the sea. That was of course a lot to do with the location, as well as the food! 1921 is a beautiful venue, and nothing is too much trouble for their guests. As each dish is set down, you are given information about the ingredients, and we were even given a print out of the menu. My husband said the wine flight was worth the extra. I absolutely loved the canapes at the beginning of the meal - WOW! Only 2 months until our next anniversary, and I am very excited to be returning to the restaurant again.

I can’t recommend this restaurant enough. It is by far and away the best restaurant in Bury St Edmunds; the jewel in its crown, if you will. The seven course tasting menu is exquisite, the ambience is perfect, and the staff are excellent, with just the right amount of informality. Did I mention the food? It’s better than many Michelin starred restaurants that I’ve eaten in. The chefs hardly put a foot wrong. I found it hard to say that any of the seven dishes was less than perfect. On top of this, it’s very reasonable. Where else could you get a seven course tasting menu, plus canapés, for £73? Frankly it’s a steal. Don’t miss this place. Life is short; don’t go through it without eating at 1921!

My husband treated his father and me to dinner here 10 days ago, both of us celebrating new jobs. We all enjoyed the 7 course dinner and 1 wine flight because two of us were driving. All I can say is that the food was exceptional. Having visited several michelin * restaurants and our previous favourite local restaurant being the Great House in Lavenham a few years back, we now have a new firm favourite after this visit. On top of the exceptional food, the ambience was perfect and the service fabulous. Kyle, who we believe to be both the maître d and sommelier, was the icing on the cake for us. His wine knowledge and general quirky behaviour added another level to our experience. Although exceptionally busy, he made time for us and answered any questions we put to him. When our bill arrived, we were given two little boxes, each containing delicious chocolate truffles, and a congratulations on your new job cards, very thoughtful. Needless to say, we will be back asap. Thank you for an outstanding soirée.

We had the 7-course tasting menu with the wine flight, and honestly, it was the best meal I've ever had. The food is amazing: each course a little miracle of tastes and textures and presentation. The service couldn't have been better: both food and wine served by staff who seem to take pride in what they're serving (as well they might), in a manner that combines friendly informality with well-informed expertise. Even the environment is flawless: low-key classic decor, tables a good distance apart, lighting just right. It's not cheap (our meal, including extra drinks and a cheese course, came to a little over £300 for 2 before service), but what you get for that is absolute perfection.

If you’re reading this you are probably interested in fine dining with exceptional service. And this is what I had at 1921 7 course tasting menu. Beautifully imagined, cooked to perfection and presented with flair and care. Service was attentive and unobtrusive as it should be. It’s the little things: presenting cutlery, serving and clearing from the correct side, knowledgeable about the dishes - all executed perfectly Wine list worked well for me with plenty of my faves Toilets perfectly clean: it matters! Ambience good with a suitable playlist at a gentle volume One for the MustGoBack list!

Amazing! We opted for the 5 course tasting menu and it was perfect for us. I find it incredible how the chef balances and combines flavours so each course creates one taste sensation after another. My favourites were the crab and the halibut & mussel courses.

What can be said except they were brilliant. Everyone had a great night, food was amazing equalled by service. They could not have done enough for us. Kyle was a great host.

As always 1921 is a real treat . Change of menu brought some fantastic new dishes and that coupled with great service made for a fantastic evening . My son treated me to the 7 course tasting menu at 1921 as a pre Mothers Day treat. I can honestly say that it was probably the best meal I’ve had for a long time. Amazing food, superb staff service, wonderful ambience. The wine was fantastic too. Very knowledgable restaurant manager who enjoyed explaining our food selection and the very diverse wines. The staff were very professional and yet happy to talk about the food as well. Early booking is essential and it really was packed. We will definitely return.

Our first visit to 1921 but will not be our last. Had the 7 course taster menu with one wine flight. All absolutely perfect. The tastes and textures of each course were exquisite. The wine was varied, perfectly matched and interesting. The staff were the "icing on the cake". Both knowledgeable and courteous. A perfect evening. It doesn't come cheap but you get what you pay for. We will be returning for the set lunch.

Birthday couples meal a few weeks before Xmas. Opted for the 7 course taster menu plus wine flight. The food was really interesting and the wine flight especially interesting with a Japanese wine, a cold red. The Asian course (crab) was amazing and loved the Jerusalem artichoke and duck courses. The “tea” dessert was possibly the prettiest thing I have ever eaten. The only weak dish was the chocolate dessert. The atmosphere and service was perfect. It wasn’t cheap but we left feeling we’d had excellent value and probably our favourite meal out for years.

My friend booked the five course tasting menu for a late birthday celebration. Every single course was a taste experience and the restaurant is a real pleasure. This is how you imagine a great meal out to be in every sense. They do it right here.

My husband and I came here for our silver wedding anniversary last night and had the 5 course tasting menu. What a wonderful place! The restaurant has a lovely comfortable ambience; classy without any pretensions. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and the service was faultless. I don't eat meat but it was no trouble at all for them to swap out the meat dishes for something else. The food was all beautifully presented and explained well by the staff. My husband particularly liked the Jerusalem artichoke with champagne velouté. I loved all of it. We will definitely be coming back.

Have been to 1921 several times with family for lunch. Yet again a lovely experience with beautifully presented and delicious food. The staff were both courteous and attentive just as you would expect. The restaurant is tastefully decorated and provides an intimate and relaxing atmosphere. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and dining that I can heartily recommend.

This was our first visit having only recently moved to the area. We were delighted by the whole experience. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable without being creepy. Food was beyond expectations. I’m not usually a fan of tasting menus but this one was a real treat. Each carefully prepared morsel was full of complex and yummy favours. And each plate was a totally different experience from the last. Thank you. We enjoyed it all. Including the Croatian Chardonnay - flowery with lots of unexpected bottom. Excellent!

This is my fourth time to 1921 and it never fails to impress me. The tasting menu was absolutely outstanding, with each dish cooked and presented to complete perfection. There is not one dish I can fault. The setting is formal, yet relaxed at the same time. The staff are always amazing: welcoming, attentive and very polite. The aperitifs are something I highly recommend. I have eaten in many Michelin star restaurants and 1921 transcends a number of them and, for fine dining, is reasonably priced for the excellent service, food and experience you receive. Will happily return time after time.

This was our second visit. We started off sharing a plate of canapés which were beyond delicious and so inventive, e.g. frogs’ leg tikka masala. These were so good, we actually asked for a second helping before our starters arrived. The starters were really something special. I had the best scallop dish I’ve eaten in years and my wife had a confit chicken/ham hock that was as smooth as silk. For main course we both opted for the guinea fowl. Without question this was the best game bird we’ve ever had. The serving staff were just great. Cheerful, helpful and engaging. Best night out in quite some time. Officially our favourite restaurant in Bury.

What an excellent choice for a Tuesday lunch in Bury St Edmunds. I was thrilled to have found this place and chosen it for a special family occasion. Two of us had travelled up from the south coast, and two of us had come from near Colchester. It's a difficult time for restaurants, and there aren't too many good places that are open on Mondays and Tuesdays in the area. 1921 Angel looked like a good bet, but I must say, it exceeded expecations in all areas. The pre-visit "allergy-check" call was handled superbly, the welcome was warm and genuine, the food was brilliant, the room and decor were super, and the service was friendly and professional. That's everything you want, isn't it? Some of the dishes we had from the set lunch menu: -vodka-cured cod, avocado & wasabi canape -black pepper-cured cod, pickled potato, lime & coriander -venison tartare -Suffolk chicken breast, chanterelles, grape, verjus -Pitchfork cheddar dumplings, glazed salsify, chestnuts -Coffee parfait, spiced pumpkin -Chocolate and orange Two of the components in the puddings - milk crisp and coffee parfait - were especially thrilling. Honestly, it was one of the best restaurant experiences I've had, made all the more enjoyable by being delivered in such a relaxed, non-fussy way. Would I return? Absolutely.

Absolutely incredible tasting menu, service and wine flight. Memphis & Mel were outstanding in their service this evening. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. If you love fine dining you won’t be disappointed. The 7 course tasting menu with the accompanying wine flight was full of taste and flavours. I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the best meals I’ve ever had. We ate the 3 course lunch … with 2 different wines recommended by the restaurant… the food was superb … service friendly with attention to detail … not in any way pretentious easy welcoming making you feel at home … the lunch and the Rosé...

We can’t believe 1921 doesn’t have a Michelin star! Everything from start to finish was wonderful. We were greeted and attended by a brilliant attentive person at our table all night. I wish I’d asked his name, he helped us with food and wine selections...

I went on my own for lunch and had the daily lunch menu. Food was terrific. Very good range of wines by the glass. Atmosphere comfortable, staff excellent. Can't fault it.

Had the 3 course lunch for £24 each - amazing value, the food was delicious and served in a relaxed, friendly and professional way. It was our first visit and had been recommended to us, it definitely won't be the last! We are so lucky...
