OMG this little pub does the best food ever. My father and uncle go every week and the rest of us go every other week. The hosts are the friendliest people. With a warm and welcoming atmosphere it’s amazing and if you want a “drink”or 3 the gill your boots with the wide variety available at super prices.

I've popped into pubs for a quick pint on many occasions and every time found regulars and staff a little wary, standoffish. 1904 was a completely different experience. Within seconds I was deep in conversation with a friendly barman, a nice couple showing me photos of their motorbike and Steve, telling stories of how he winds up his wife. Great atmosphere, great little building, I'll definitely be going again.

A warm welcome met us last night at 1904. We joined in their weekly quiz night and it was great fun. The drinks were reasonably priced and the banter was even better!

Friendly, great value and tasty curries - back again for another work trip to Halifax- Tuesday night is curry night at the 1904. Not to be missed. Fantastic value and a very reasonable portion. A choice of two curries, served with rice, chips and a piece of nann bread - all for £2.50 if you buy a pint (of anything). Whenever I get the chance I’m across from the Travelodge for a bargain like this. The landlady keeps all in good order and is always welcoming. They are now running a reduced menu but I would always take the curry if available. Thanks once again for a great, convenient meal. See you in January when I’m next back.

Recently just moved into Halifax so after exploring for a new local we came across this little beauty, best staff I’ve ever met and the food is lovely, the landlady even others to go out of her way and cook off the menu for us so I tried steak and it’s just as good if not better than most restaurants I’ve been to around here. Pints are around £3 depending on what you drink and happy hour every Monday so you can’t go wrong, I’ve even decided to bring the family down for quiz night this Sunday. The only problem I have with it is bad signal on my phone but there is free WiFi not that it’s much better but I suppose it gets me off my phone for once.

We went in here as a group of 6 as we were staying at the travelodge over the road and it was quite late but caught them just before they stopped serving food so quickly ordered drinks and food. Staff seemed polite and friendly as well as being helpful. In due course the food came out one by one and then came mine. I ordered the Yorkshire pudding thinking that we are up in Yorkshire, let’s have a traditional crafted piece of food. Pretty much like when you go abroad. You want to sample the local cuisine. Two of the lads had burgers of which the bread was burnt. Another lad had fish and chips which he only ate a little bit as he said tasted awful. Another had the curry even though they came out and said they didn’t have the curry of the day so he probably had some jarred stuff as he said his was fine. And my Yorkshire was rock hard even with gravy on it and you had to snap it rather than try to cut it as there wasn’t a hammer and chisel available and the sausages were burnt too and were hard work cutting in to. Im sorry but you need to sack your chef and bring someone in who knows how to cook because whoever it is you’ve got obviously sucks.

Lovely place to visit with friends or family, been here a few times now and it’s different every time. The food here is a lot better than I expected, came in for a quick meal after work and was greeted by a mountain of food, the staff here would rather you leave food on the plate instead of starve, best food I’ve experienced from a pub in my time. Staff here are great to talk too and very helpful, higher recommend the 1904 pub and if you’re staying across the road in the hotel it’s only a two minute walk away.

Working on Dean clough there is limited choice unless you want to pay a fortune for 'a la carte' or just small crap food. This pub is traditional and basic. It is just basic good pub grub that you don't have to take a second mortgage out for.

I ordered lasagne, which was really lovely, if a little heavy on the oregano (or similar herb). Garlic bread was inedible as it was so very hard. Online price for this was ÂŁ6.95, but I was charged ÂŁ8.50 and shown the paper menu, as if this cleared the matter up. Of the toilets, one cubicle had neither lock nor toilet roll. Fortunately, the other was ok. Wasn't too happy with the dog wandering around unchecked, either. As I said, room room for improvement; the main part was almost faultless.

En general agradable pub aunque necesidades ajustando o instalar luces brillantes en los aseos de señoras. No estoy seguro de si iré a pronto. .

First trip to Halifax and first meal at 1904.Arrived at just after 12.30 having walked from centre of town. Warm welcome from girl behind bar. Unfortunately only enough mash for one giant Yorkshire with sausage, mash and gravy but not upset as undecided between that and 1904 burger. Daughter ( 20) had sausage and said they were really good. My burger was very tasty , served with homemade chips in skins. Real cheese instead of plastic. As we were only customers in place, felt like royalty. Food piping hot and plentiful. Bill came to ÂŁ21 for pint coke, pint lager and two main courses. Would happily return again

This was meant to be a trip whereby I would work and the kids would visit family with my wife but not to be. So I consoled myself with two menu items that I have previously enjoyed. For the full details read my other reviews below but suffice to say it was excellent again. Thanks to Michael and the team ( especially JC and the excellent soup chef!!!). I would now feel disloyal if I went anywhere else in Halifax.

Called in for tea with family. Really friendly staff, good quick service. I had 1904 burger with trimmings and there were lots of trimmings. The Hand cut chips were some of the best chips ever. My son had the Yorkshire pud with sausages and chips and my husband had chilli and nachos All the food was served quickly and the owner was proud to inform us where he bought all his meat from (a local reputable butcher). Prices were very reasonable around ÂŁ8 for a main. Some were even cheaper. We will be going back and taking more family with us.

Another night in Halifax and the need for a feed. I now know this menu off by heart and I was going to have a burger off the specials board but at the last changed my mind and went with the classic bangers and mash in a giant Yorkshire pud. When it arrived I had thought I had made my first bad choice in the place. The portion did not look huge - for a start I could not see the mash. There was a huge lake of gravy but no sign of the carbs! When I started moving the three sausages that were on the top I realized that there was ample mash it had just be hidden by the three very meaty and generously proportioned, locally produced prize sausages. The mash was not only present but also very correct. It was super smooth and creamy - very nice. The only real complaint I could level at this plateful was the complete absence of any veg. The gravy was good but maybe some onions in it, a pile of peas(?) something to add a little vegginess to this classic comfort food. Was it good value? - certainly. Was it tasty? - definitely. Was it a generous enough portion? yes it was. Thanks again for a great home cooked meal.

I said was not going to keep rating this excellent place but ever since the excellent Chicken and Sweetcorn soup I reviewed after my last visit I have been looking for recipes and telling people about it. I have also been hoping against hope that I would find it on the menu when I next visited. This was, I thought, a vain hope as the landlord had stated they normally only do veggie soups to give a veggie starter option. However tonight I was delighted to find it on the menu and as good as before.Followed by a lasagne I can state this was the best meal that I have had during this week's travels.Thanks. Same soup again next Monday night please (29th June). Also delighted to see food now being served later on a Sunday. All we need now is breakfasts from 6:30 and you have it cracked!

I work close to this establishment and thought it would be a good idea to try out the local facilities after being underwhelmed by the John Crossley in terms of both food and beer. The 1904 does some really good food - even the simple things on the menu are very tasty! The Beer is also well kept and there's always something on for the real ale drinker such as myself. This is a gem which I imagine a few people are put off by the exterior, but if you ignore your preconceptions you will have a great time, great food and great drink!!

This has to be the best pub in Halifax, in fact not just Halifax. I travel all round the UK frequenting many "local" pubs and hands down this is the best. As an out of towner I have been welcomed in with open arms. The food is amazing (recommend pie Wednesday :D) the regulars are amazing, the staff are amazing, the whole feel of the place is amazing. I would highly recommend ANYONE staying in Halifax to check this place out.

We ate at 1904 after the multiple reviews by another customer as thought it must be good if he can be bothered to keep reviewing the same place. We were not disappointed! A family run pub, the food cooked by the lady of the house was delicious and the warm and friendly welcome we received upon entering, made us feel right at home. Great pub and food and we will definitely be back when in this area again.

Back in Halifax and straight across to my favorite local away from home. Welcomed as ever - thanks! The menu had not changed but there was still plenty of variety in the main courses to chose from. The started is pretty much the classic pub menu trio - Pate, Prawn Cocktail and "soup of the day".I did not fancy the first two and the soup at many places seems a bit of an after thought but I gave it a go and I am pleased I did.Cooked by the landlords wife today's soup was Chicken and Sweetcorn. This can be a difficult one to pull off - some places have it too starchy and thick whilst others go watery and tasteless.NOT the 1904 - I know it sounds like I am bias towards this place but without any exaggeration this was the best Chicken and Sweetcorn soup I have ever tasted (including in Asia). It was an unusual spin on a classic - I would describe it as Thai style. It was mildly chili without being too hot for those not keen on spice - warming not punishing. It had both normal corn and chunks of baby corn (giving great texture) loads of chicken etc. You get the idea. I would definitely have it again tomorrow if only it was on and I was in town.I followed with a locally produced lamb and mint burger (and its the sort of place where the butcher actually drinks in the pub - he was in tonight and more than willing to vouch for the quality of the meat that was clearly used).Nicely presented, well cooked flavorsome food with a good pint of Oates (local) beer. I am again left with no option but to award 5 stars and my thanks.

This was my third visit and to be honest I had other plans for tonight but work made me change my mind at the last minute and I am glad I did. This is a really friendly pub and I have yet to visit without striking up conversation with someone (i.e. a "local") at the bar. As a rule I do not sit at bars whilst away on business as I hate the whole "Johnny No Mates" thing; but at 1904 it really is so friendly that it's not an issue.Tonight after conversing with a local butcher (as he happened to be) I plumped for the Venison Burger. This was an excellent choice, nicely cooked, well presented and at a very reasonable price. This was washed down with a pint of the very locally brewed Oates O.T. which is a very smooth and easy drinking bitter,I had thought to reschedule tonight's plans into tomorrow evening but I am very tempted to return to 1904 and try the gammon steak or similar. I really wish this was my local back home - I am stuck with a serviceable but pretty characterless plastic chain pub at the end of my street - it's convenient but that's about all. The 1904 at Dean Clough however is a real pub with real character - if you are passing it by don't... stop and spend a while... it's well worth it.

Very obviously home cooked with care - a really good lasagne and pint for a tenner. I will definitely be back as the gammon also looked great.

I was all set to put up with another solo meal in a plastic "chain" pub or restaurant whilst working alone, away in Halifax but as I drove off into town I felt the urge to do a U turn and try the pub opposite the Dean Cough Travelodge. AND I am so pleased I did.Halifax has lots of places to eat; some of which are great, others are the ones you find in any town.1904 is a small "local" style pub I have been driving past on my visits to Halifax, it looks ok from the outside and when you walk in it does not have any fake, dressed up airs about it.A look at the menu quickly reassures you that they are catering for people who want good honest, home produced food rather than foodservice mass catering. I ordered the chilli con carne which came as a good size portion with well cooked fluffy rice and serious pub chips (not your silly little cardboard fries). It was amongst the best chilli's I have had.Watching the other meals being served I would have been equally as happy with one of the speciality burger or the gammon steak. It's not a massive menu but there if more than enough to offer me variety next time I visit and I will return. There is little point paying for parking in town when this is on my hotel's doorstep. All in all a decent pint and a great chilli for little more than a tanner. That's the price of a starter in some chains. I am very happy that I made the U turn and snap decision to try something with a bit of character. As a bonus the Barman was friendly, the chef engaging and chatty but neither intruded on a very nice meal.I am looking forward to my next visit and I think I will try the pork and apple burger next time.
