1620 Pub & Eatery in Plymouth

We held my daughter’s surprise baby shower for lunch here and it was amazing. From when we first booked it to until we left, the service was exceptional, they were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious and so much choice. You definitely need to try the cocktails as well. I definitely recommend Desire, we all said we will be returning.

Wanted to try somewhere new in Plymouth, so glad we did, from when we walked in the service was superb. The food was lovely, My wife and I shared the mixed starter, I can highly recommend the Ox cheek, the St Louis ribs melted in your mouth. Mains were fantastic also, smoked chicken for me and pork for my wife. We will be back for another visit very soon.

Dropped in early for a quick bite before attending the summer sessions on the hoe. Fantastic food and very professional and friendly staff. Although we hadn’t booked we were made very welcome. Mums day lunch very nice took a long time to get to our table around an hour however i assume that's due to it being busy and food being freshly prepared. Staff lovely. Would recommend to all. Would advice that a roller blind is put in the windows as the sun was streaming in straight into our eyes which was rather unpleasant.

Sunday roast lunch excellent . We were asked how we like our beef. My choice pink, my partner slightly less pink. Spot on beef and the rest tasty +. The waitress kept giving our mains and sweets to the correct person without hesitation, that's attentive and not often seen. The two back room tables need replacing ASAP, and a bit of wall decoration in keeping with the rest of the restaurant is my only criticism.

Another wonderful meal at this hidden gem. It was my second time here, and I brought some friends along to share the experience. The restaurant has a lovely ambiance, but the main attraction is the food and the friendly staff. We ordered various starters, mostly seafood, and they were all fresh and delicious. My main course was roast pork with a generous serving of vegetables, extra crackling and gravy. I have nothing but praise for this restaurant, especially the two ladies who served us, Tia and Eva. we will be back soon!

We went for the pasta/pizzza deal 2 courses for £13.50 which is outstanding value, the pasta dish chicken and mushroom tagliatelle was delicious and my husband really enjoyed his Rossa pizza, we both had desserts which were also lovely.

My partner and I dined here a few weeks ago and we had a wonderful experience. The food was exceptional; full of flavour and well presented! The chefs have a keen eye for detail and we were super impressed with how packed full of good quality ingredients both our pasta dishes were…just look at all that mozzarella and meat in the spaghetti bolognese! The restaurant has such a cosy ambience throughout and the staff were all so lovely and answered any questions we had, we really couldn’t fault the service at all! If you’re a pasta fanatic or just love Italian food in general like us, then this is a must visit - what a fabulous addition to Plymouth’s thriving foodie scene!

Really poor experience. Staff were unprepared and lacked common sense. We had to ask for menus, we had to ask for drinks. First starter was delivered. After 5 minutes the guest started eating. That starter was finished a good 5 minutes before any other starters were delivered! All main courses came out sporadically. First meals were finished before we had to ask where the remaining meals were. All food seemed to be out of proportion…some dishes were overflowing and some barely there. I’d not recommend & I’ll not be going again.

Such a lovely time from start to finish at Desire. The staff were so welcoming and attentive throughout. The food was presented nicely, you could tell everything was prepared fresh. A special mention to the smoked ox cheek and beef nugget - wow! All with a cosy environment to enjoy it in.

Cannot recommend Zena and the team highly enough. We had our birthday party here, food was amazing. We booked out the whole place. Music as fab. Friends and family came from everywhere and everyone said how well the staff coped. Location is perfect for those who want to go out after. 1620 is a clean and pleasant eatery on the edge of the Barbican district. We went on Easter Sunday and had the Sunday roast. It was very well presented and tasteful. The staff are helpful and very pleasant. Highly recommend

Following seeing the great reviews we gave 1620 a try for Mother’s Day. We were unfortunately extremely disappointed. Upon being the second table to sit down we waited 15 mins before someone took a drinks order. There were so many waitresses just stood there looking. Half an hour into being there, we were asked what our food choices were - we had already given a pre order beforehand and yet it took 50 mins for us to receive the 3 starters. Our drinks came in two half’s with a good 15 mins between. There were about 7/8 waitresses but with not one who knew what was going on. It was chaos. We waited another 45 mins for our mains of which only half came and the other half another 10-15 mins later. Everyone’s food was room temperature. No one came to ask if our food was okay, so when our plates were collected with half of the food left, they were surprised we said it was disappointing. The meat is cut so thin it is see through and so much so you could barely taste it. The waitresses also didn’t know if they’d given lamb or beef as a result and most of us received not what we ordered. At one point a waitress came and just whipped two away from our noses. We were going to leave before desserts as we had already been there 3 hours and weren’t holding out much hope. They were actually tasty but we were all still hungry at this point due to not being able to fully eat the mains. We witnessed people from each table approaching the staff at some point who were also complaining and one speaking to the manager. The music kept going up and down, you couldn’t hear yourself at points despite being asked to turn it down. We left after 3 3/4 hours and to say it was over priced is an understatement. Bad day perhaps but definitely not able to cope with this amount of bookings. It was a shame after seeing previous reviews and wanting to give the place another try following a previously bad experience there when it first opened.

Despite booking a table I got the distinct impression that we weren’t expected. There were no menus and the choice of just 5 main roast dinners and 3 simple deserts seemed sparse and contrary to what we saw on line. Our choices were written down on a tiny piece of paper and took nearly 2 hours to serve. The meal was not hot, nothing to write home about and really wasn’t value for money. At the end we did not even get an itemised bill just told a total.

In a group of 9 (including 4 mums) we visited 1620 hoping to celebrate Mother's Day in style. We left three and a half hours later with a sense of disappointment. Many things just did not seem to go to plan: ~ The Waitress asked for our order, even though ordering our food in advance was a prerequisite - this set the alarm bells ringing..... ~ Starters went without a hitch, even though one of the party had a prawn cocktail which hadn't even been ordered. ~ After a lengthy wait, seven main roast dinner courses were delivered to the table. No sauces were on the table and none were offered ( so no mustard, mint sauce or horse radish which we would be standard at home). ~ After 5 of the party had finished their main course, the 2 delayed main courses were delivered to the table. This was way too late for us all to enjoy eating our main course together! ~ After another lengthy delay, desserts were finally served. Apart from one, which was eventually delivered to the table as we were about to ask for the bill! Slightly bizarre....... ~ Throughout our time in the restaurant, the background music (pumped out through a speaker on the ceiling above our table) went from quiet to being so overpowering that it was hard to make ourselves heard! We had to request that the volume be adjusted on a number of occasions!! ~ A poor reception on the payment machine forced a lengthy delay in the settling of the bill! ~ On the plus side, everyone seemed to enjoy the food! It is difficult to tell whether it was just 'a bad ay at the office' or whether this is how 1620 normally functions. To be honest, I don't think we'll be returning customers!

Disappointed! The portions were cut so thin I was left speechless. The beef was 1mm thin! The cheesecake was the size of my finger.

SHOCKING from service to food. Hour and half between courses, even though everything was pre-ordered.

Having seen all the great reviews on Trip Advisor for 1620 we were looking forward to our lunch here. We were unfortunately incredibly disappointed by both the standard of the food and the inflated prices for what we were being served. My husband and I had a few small plates from the tapas and shared the quesadilla which was sold as a main dish. The portions were tiny, and the standard of food was terrible. The bang bang cauliflower was consisted of a few small pieces of dry cauliflower in no sauce with a sprinkling of chilli flakes/powder on top and the chicken skewers were tiny. The quesadilla would have been fine as a starter for one person and we were surprised this was listed as a main meal. My mum had honey basted gammon with crispy onion and squeak. When the meal was served her meal looked unedible, the meat was grey and the squeak looked like a soggy vegetable burger slapped on top. I asked if she wanted to send it back but she didn't want to make a fuss. She had a few mouthfuls and ended up leaving the majority of it as it tasted as horrible as it looked. The waitress who was lovely did ask if there was a problem with it when we went to pay the bill and we did note that it had looked awful/tasted bad but there was no effort to resolve this (appreciate leaving feedback to the end of the meal is not helpful). We couldn't believe how sub-standard the food was and how they are charging the prices they are, would definitely not return.

Great value! Have always been able to fit us in despite popularity. First class Sunday Lunch and god wines. Freshly cooked, tempting starters and desserts. Mostly locals. I would place this pub/restaurant top of the list in Plymouth. A good mix of traditional and more modern dishes without clever dick, of the moment, unknowns. Charming, competent staff.
