I've visited many restaurants in Paris, Rouen, Reims and Lille over the past two years including the Moulin Rouge and other hotspots. The food here and in particular the presentation and balance of flavours was superior to many of those. The Amuse bouche was mushroom with black truffle and pepper, excellent. Starter was six succulent escargot and Autumn chicken breast for the main all washed down with a glass of cabernet sauvigon. It was so good and I savoured every mouthful over the next hour. The service was better than experienced in France where waiting on is seen as a profession and not a weekend student job. Clearly someone has provided good training to the team as they knew their job without being intrusive and enhanced the dining experience. I had picked this Establishment for the night solely because of the restaurant and I was not dissapointed. The lack of Internet connection in room 16 would be annoying for many ant the TV was very small. That aside the room was comfortable, well coordinated and furnished nicely. Very clean and tidy. All staff I met were cheerful and helpful. Watch the parking on site as its somewhat haphazard with whit lines faded and confusing the hell out of you. I parked on the main road in the end as it was much easier. So in summation, if you want an excellent astronomical experience in great surroundings then book this restaurant/ hotel. The hotel us called COTFORD Hotel. I paid £99 for one night plus the cost of the meal naturally.

Having moved into the area 2 years ago, we’d been meaning to visit the White Lion as part of trying all the local restaurants. The staff were very friendly indeed and made us feel welcome. We had a drink in the bar whilst we waited for our table to be made ready in the restaurant and were called about 20 minutes later to go in. Having waited a while I had expected that the restaurant must’ve been full, but it wasn’t, less than half the tables were occupied which made the wait a little strange, not a problem, just odd. I ordered fish and chips and my wife their burger. Whilst both the fish and the burger were nice, they were both served with soggy chips, the kind that you get when the oil used to deep fry them just isn’t hot enough. I get crispy chips with my £4.95 fish take away from the chippy across the road, so at £13 per mains we’re talking top gastro pub prices for which getting the basics right isn’t an unreasonable expectation.
