Having moved into the area 2 years ago, we’d been meaning to visit the White Lion as part of trying all the local restaurants. The staff were very friendly indeed and made us feel welcome. We had a drink in the bar whilst we waited for our table to be made ready in the restaurant and were called about 20 minutes later to go in. Having waited a while I had expected that the restaurant must’ve been full, but it wasn’t, less than half the tables were occupied which made the wait a little strange, not a problem, just odd. I ordered fish and chips and my wife their burger. Whilst both the fish and the burger were nice, they were both served with soggy chips, the kind that you get when the oil used to deep fry them just isn’t hot enough. I get crispy chips with my £4.95 fish take away from the chippy across the road, so at £13 per mains we’re talking top gastro pub prices for which getting the basics right isn’t an unreasonable expectation.

We stayed at the White Lion, and were not overly impressed by the Hotel ( which has some unhospitable draconian Rules and Regulations for Guests) nor charmed by the Brasserie. The Publicity Blurb reads well enough though it was possibly written for some other era, however the actuality does not live up to the claims. Perhaps we went at a bad time but the service seemed desultary, the food not memorable and the atmosphere rather frigid. Regarding the Food and Drink actually purchased at this establishment: we were not overly impressed with these nor the Atmosphere or the Service in the Brasserie; though the rest of the staff seemed friendly and capable. It may be that locals fare better than visitors, we recognize that. We were there 26/27 September.and probably will not visit again.

Walked into Upton from a B&B a short walk away. Having checked out a couple of menus as we walked along the river (and the first restaurant we arrived at having a private function on), we headed onto the high street and stopped at the White Lion. Drinks were brought to us within minutes, and service all evening was fantastic. We ordered home cooked fish and chips and vegetarian cannelloni, both of which came relatively quickly and were fantastic. Two mains and drinks came to £30. Would certainly return.

The Pepperpot Brasserie is at the White Lion Hotel, bang in the centre of Upton. If your idea of a great meal out is the latest gastro pub built from a catalogue and charging prices that are a step above their rank, then the Pepperpot is probably not for you. If you appreciate really excellent food ranging from the traditional to the innovative at a very fair price and with excellent service in more traditional (but not dated) surroundings then the Pepperpot is the best for miles around. I visited again for a weekday Lunch on the 16 June 2017 and have to say the new menus are better than ever. For starter I had the Duck Confit with Balsamic Roast Plumb (off the Al-a-Carte menu). It was superb - nice crispy skin but the meat lovely and moist. Really tasty and nicely complemented by the plumbs. Would definitely have again. For main course I chose the Gourmet Stack off the Summer Lunch Menu. Try this and you will never want to order a burger again! Forget burgers, this is a beautiful layer of quality Fillet of Beef (really tasty and tender) topped with slices of tender and lightly peppered chicken and finished off with a piece of quality bacon and a little mustard dressing. All served in a bread bun which put the typical burger bun to shame. Just all real good quality meat! Fries on the side together with an mayonnaise and relish to finish it off. A burger at a gastro pub? No thanks, never again! I finished off with a wonderful cheesecake which was server with fresh fruit berries and was golden - literally! Yes, topped off with gold leaf. Everything is fresh and if you have any special dietary requirements whether personal choice or medically dictated they will do their very best to accommodate you - with style! John and Chris who the White Lion deserve real praise for putting such effort into ensuring that their food is really something special, that the service is efficient and friendly and that the prices are no higher than so many places that just cant compare. They have just celebrated their 20th anniversary running the hotel and restaurant, and with so many places changing hands every few years that is a real testament to their skills and hard work. There are Lunch, Dinner ' Board', A-la-Carte and Lunchtime "Quick Fix" (fixed price) menus - plus the obligatory Sunday Lunch Menu. So no excused not to give it a try! I eat out a lot, have been coming here for 20 years and it still has its place at the top of the list!

Sunday lunch. Excellent sauces and large portions. Good friendly service. We had to wait a bit because the lasagne dish took longer to arrive than the roasts, despite it being on the Sunday menu. This is the second lunch for me here and I recommend it.

Good service Not very full - but it was mid week. Food not overly enthralling. Starter good - main course OK. Dessert very good. I will give them their due. One woman on a nearby table had some under cooked fish. It was taken away without any fuss and replaced with a complete replacement meal which she was very happy with. So, full marks for that. Would I eat there again? Maybe...

So wrote the author Henry Fielding of his visit in 1749, and the same is true today. The Pepperpot Brasserie is part of The White Lion hotel and the decor is charming and traditional, retaining oak beams from the 1500s. The ambiance is delightful and the food and service are of a very high standard. I look forward to a return visit.

We went for a family lunch on a Sunday to celebrate a sisters birthday. They provided a round table as requested, but the problem was that it was too high for the seats! As most of the family are 'vertically challenged' this was a bit of an issue. However, various cushions were promptly brought in, making it a bit more comfortable. There was a varied choice for the Sunday lunch, and between us we covered most of the menu. One sister is sensitive to certain foods, and the waitress suggested having the sauce in a jug, so she could put on as much or as little as she liked. The service couldn't be faulted, and the food was tasty - what more could you want?

We visit this restaurant on a regular basis and i have to question the review written 5th August 2013 by WendyPops44. I find it very hard to believe that Campylobacter poisoning could have been caught at this restaurant! The symtoms i believe do not appear until a couple of days after eating the infected food and this lady said she was ill immediately. We have always found the food excellent and superior to many other restaurants in the area and the service second to non. I am a diabetic and have to be very careful about what i eat and all the staff are very accommodating and often warn me if there are things in a dish that i cannot eat and go out of their way to make sure i have something that is suitable. Thank you Pepperpot Brasserie!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

The Pepperpot Brasserie is the restaurant in The White Lion - Upton upon Severn's best and most centrally located Hotel.Firstly, forget a previous reviewer claiming to have become ill with Campylobacter food poisoning immediately after eating here. Anyone who knows anything about this will know that it takes typically 2-3 days before any symptoms start to appear, and can be up to 10 days (Google it if you don't believe me). The only place where you are less likely to get food poisoning is somewhere that doesn't serve food at all. There are two main menus available, the 'board menu' and 'a la carte'. There is also a 'catch of the day' fish menu which itself adds a couple of starter and main course options. So, there is plenty of choice at varying prices. Note, however, that on a Saturday evening the board menu is not available - so there is less choice than at other times which is a bit of a shame as my personal favourite, their Confit of Duck is on the board menu! They also serve an excellent Sunday lunch. We have all been to pubs that like to think they are restaurants with menus that are more fashion than substance and prices that are hard to justify. The Pepperpot Brasserie is a real restaurant, with decent service and a separate comfortable lounge with sofas in which you can enjoy a drink before and after your meal. The restaurant itself has a wealth of beams and character, is comfortable and has a semi-formal yet relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The hotel recently celebrated 500 years of service! My wife and I have eaten here regularly since the current owners, Jon and Chris Lear, took over which is more years ago than I care to remember, and the quality of food and service is without doubt in a different (and higher!) league to anything else available locally. It is easy to spend as much or more money at some pretty ordinary 'gastro pubs' these days - places that you just know will have changed hands a number of times over during a similar time frame to that which Jon and Chris have been running the White Lion.We all have our individual preferences, and have different requirements for different moods and occasions, but it is fair to say that there is nowhere else that I know that does a better job of being what they are trying to be - and in the case of The Pepperpot Brassery that is serving quality food beautifully cooked in a traditional way, but with flair and imagination with service and atmosphere to match. Booking is not always necessary (so pop in if you just find yourself in the area), but is still a very wise move.Give it a try - most of you that do will be going back for more.

Thankfully we did not stay at this hotel, only ate in the restaurant. Immediately after finishing my meal I was violently ill. I was then very ill for the next 48 hours before visiting my GP. It was diagnosed as campylobacter food poisoning and I needed antibiotics to remove the bacteria from my system, and had over a week off work.Obviously we will not be returning. Although it seems insignificant compared to the illness, we also found the service abrupt and dismissive and thought the food was average and overpriced.Needless to say, this visit ruined our weekend, and the following two weeks for me as I recovered.

Popped into Upton today to grab a coffee and went into this location as seemed nice from outside. Once inside the bar itself was nice enough but when we approached the bar the man behind it rather than actually acknowledging us just walked off to another part of the pub/hotel. After waiting a few minutes a lady took our order (just for 2 coffees). There was no real warmth at all in the exchange and we felt fully processed :(. After waiting another 5 mins or so another man came (at least he was friendly and smiley) and asked if he could help. When we told him we were waiting for the coffee he went off to see where it had got to. The female arrived with the coffee and unfortunately it was not very good coffee at all... I know that we weren't expecting world class coffee but this was pretty dreadful. Generally just disappointed.

I have visited The Pepperpot Brasserie at The White Lion Hotel in Upton half a dozen times but this is the first time I have written a review for it.My husband and I visited on Saturday 1st December for lunch without a booking. The lady at reception made us very welcome and found us a lovely table even though the restaurant was busy. We opted for their special 2 course lunch menu for £12.95. Cracking value for the food we recieved. We have had this menu a couple of times previously as well as ordering from the a la carte on evening visits. The food has always proved to be delicious, well executed, interesting and cleanly presented.on this visit I had homemade, delicate crispy chicken goujons with salad and a mango and chilli confit. It could have been boring but the chicken was perfect and the confit was lovely with big chunks of fresh mango. My husband had stuffed field mushroom. I do not like mushroom but he said it was tasty. For mains he had cod, wrapped in parma ham with a butter prawn sauce. It was served with sauteed potatoes and wilted spinach. Divine. I had chicken with a red wine jus with creamy mashed potato and crisp green beans. The dishes are not overly complicated or fussy. The quality of ingredients and the obvious skill of the chef is what stands this apart as the best restaurant in the area. When can I find an excuse to go again?!

Looking around Upton upon Severn for somewhere to have lunch, the White Lion was top choice. The staff were very friendly and apologised profusely for our having to sit in a very comfortable bar area because they were catering for a funeral. The two course set menu for £12.50 was excellent value. We both had a smoked salmon starter which was very light, simple but extremeIy tasty. I paid a supplement and had the beef medallions in peppercorn sauce with mushroom, tomato and chips and the meal was delicious. My husband had oriental belly of pork with rice which looked and tasted great. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert! There were 3 choices of real ale on the bar, all new to us, and the one we tried from Cottage Brewing was well kept and very drinkable. I will definitely be back to eat here again. And we are considering booking a room for one of Upton's music festivals next year because we felt that The White Lion would be a brilliant hotel for a short break.

A delightful maze of a building, marinaded in 500 years of English history, in a charming little town which time seems to have forgotten (and which accepts the motor car as a rude intrusion). And the standard of hospitality at the White Lion also owes much to long forgotten tradition. In an age when "informal" = "sloppy and slapdash" and "efficient" = "coldly bureaucratic" Jon and Chris Lear have achieved a perfect balance of both.I am reluctant to sing the praises of their chef too loudly for fear he will be discovered and kidnapped - suffice it to say I'd love to spend a week or more eating my way through his sumptuous menu. "Most of the produce we use is local, but our meat comes from a butcher in Lancashire whom we have known for 30 years".Enough said :)
